      I am betting the M1 will suck less power than an intel processor. If you are considering solar and off grid then this might be a consideration. I just like to NOT waste power on anything at home if I can turn it off or down. I am the guy checking the power usage on the Electrical Company website every day.

    • @ElevatedSystems
      @ElevatedSystems  2 года назад +51

      @@moviestudioland Actually you can lock the Intel CPU to a 15W TDP while the M1 has no user configuration and will operate up to 40 watts at load. The M1 has better performance par watt but the 1165G7 can use a lot less power thanks to user set power levels.

    • @harryhall4001
      @harryhall4001 2 года назад +18

      @@ElevatedSystems This really isn't true at all
      The M1 does not and cannot use 40W even at max load. The entire M1 mini only draws 39W under max load and that includes the inefficiencies in it's power supply, the RAM, and other system components.
      The maximum TDP of the M1 is thought to be about 15W under maximum CPU load, maybe a little more if a GPU load is applied as well. This is equal to the Intel with power tuning. When you factor in that the M1 completes tasks faster and uses less power at idle it will overall use significantly less power than the Intel system. You also have to factor in that the Framework laptop has to spend more energy than an M1 laptop on cooling, RAM, and IO. This is especially true given most systems spend the majority of there time at idle.
      The MacBook Air doesn't have to spend any power on cooling since it doesn't even have a fan, which also effectively lowers it's TDP for prolonged workloads.
      Which isn't to say that the Framework laptop isn't something you should support. It is a very good idea in and of itself. What it needs (and really all laptop PCs need) is better, more efficient processors. Ideally something as efficient and powerful as an M1 - or better. Luckily many companies are looking into making ARM processors for PCs and you can already buy Windows laptops with ARM Snapdragons and Linux laptops with cheaper ARM SoCs.
      You can also further restrict the Intel CPU but it would effect performance and maybe even efficiency. Some CPUs actually use less power running short workloads at higher clockspeeds and then returning to idle more quickly than doing it slower and spending less time in idle.

    I've ordered mine. First time that I am using such a new company's product. But I just had to support them because Framework's values are something I strongly believe in. I don't know what the future holds for the company, but based on the merits of this laptop alone, without future upgrades, I still want it for the upgrade-ability. I'm doing my part.

    Just one correction. Even if it fails, the laptop is still more upgradeable and repairable than an Apple product and most laptop computers you can buy. The vast majority of it's parts are stuff you can buy from intel and other manufacturers and we know that some 3rd party ports will be made. At least temporarily.
    So even if it fails, we can still upgrade and repair our PC much more than the other guys.

    • @kovspbru
      @kovspbru 2 года назад +15

      Totally agree. You can swap not only ram and ssd, but also whole motherboard to i7 with better boosts and more cashe. So - even CPU is upgradeable for most buyers (those with i5), even if Framework fails to deliver more options. And yes, other notebooks allow to swap motherboards, but these manipulations are way more complicated and can cause troubles.

    • @moviestudioland
      @moviestudioland 2 года назад +1

      Modular does not matter unless you CAN replace the motherboard or CPU board with upgraded CPU.

    •  2 года назад +6

      @@moviestudioland Still easier to repair though. And you can upgrade the RAM and SSD. If you didn't buy the highest spec model you could upgrade to the current top of the line motherboard, though that's not likely to be a cost effective upgrade.
      For me, the fact that the keyboard is easy to replace is a big plus. It's not, for example, like the Inspiron 13 7368 I have, where you have to disassemble just about EVERYTHING to get to the keyboard so you can replace it. (The battery, heat pipe and fan, motherboard, I/O daughtercard, and power connector have to come out, and you have to remove the display.) In contrast, you can get to the keyboard on the Framework by just removing the top deck. (Lots of screws, but that's typical in a thin and light where the keyboard itself doesn't have a rigid baseplate and instead depends on the keyboard deck of the case for stiffness.) I'm notorious for wearing the things out; I've had to replace the keyboard in just about every laptop I have ever used as a daily driver.

    • @Carterthielftw_
      @Carterthielftw_ 2 года назад +9

      @@moviestudioland you say that as if your hating on the product, but the issue is that you literally cannot source socketable mobile Cpus anymore. Even if you could, it would make the device thicker, which would kill the entire point of this product and all of its mass market appeal. Ideally, in 5 years they can have a "framework pro" which can be a bit thicker and have a socketable CPU, but having that as your one single product would kill them in an instant.

    • @mbvglider
      @mbvglider 2 года назад +3

      We won't really know that it will be truly upgradable until it's been out a while. So many technologies we take for granted today didn't exist 3-4 years ago. Mainstream portable laptops don't really benefit from marginal upgrades, so we have to see if you can actually keep the majority of this laptop intact in 4-5 years when you're ready for a serious performance boost. That said, repairability is a great thing to have in a laptop, and for DIY types and for businesses with IT departments, I think this could be wonderful. In the class of mainstream laptops, though, I don't really see why I would ever want this computer when Apple laptops are similarly priced, have good service options, tend to perform better, and can be sold at a very reasonable loss in 3 years. However, when Framework makes a gaming laptop, that's where things like upgradability will really start to matter, and that's where I'll be interested.

      From the Framework forums, it feels like there are a decent number of Thinkpad users hoping to break free from Lenovo, but with increasing awareness of how we are destroying the planet, there may be more people who want something like this thinking that it's better for the environment. Whether it actually is better for the environment is up for debate, but I certainly don't like the idea that if something goes wrong with for example a macbook, you're often encouraged to basically junk the whole thing and get a new one, because even if it can be repaired, the cost of the repair is usually very high (or you've paid $300 for Applecare...). What Apple does with broken laptops I don't know, but I assume they are recycled somehow.

    • @sharonb.9128

      @@andyp123456 Apple can do better as far as repairability, but so can a lot of tech companies. My experience with Apple is they last a long time and are usually resold or passed down to a family member. As far as the environment goes, there are a lot of companies churning out cheap, disposable Chromebook type machines that have a lot more to answer for than Apple.

    I love this device! I truly hope that they manage to stick around for the long run. Their value proposition is quite unique, and geeks like me are not a massive market segment, but I would love to see them succeed. Hardware is a tough game. People may point to the likes of System76, Slimbook, Tuxedo Computers, etc as examples of smaller hardware companies finding a sustainable market. It should be stated though, that while those companies do have some manufacturing capability, most of their laptops are OEM designed and manufactured, rebranded and distributed under the new brand. The Framework Laptop is a custom design and requires bespoke manufacturing.

    I have a Batch 2 system, which I ordered as the base pre-built and then added some parts. I received it at the end of July and it has been my primary portable computer since then. (I also have a desktop system that I use regularly for gaming and some other purposes.)
    One reason I went with the Framework is that I already had 32 GB of RAM in the laptop I was replacing, in the form of two DDR4 SODIMMs. I haven't sold the old laptop yet, but when it goes it will have the 8 GB module that came in my pre-built Framework. I also moved out the 256 GB SSD (which will go into another computer) and bought a 2 TB SSD to replace it (not from Framework because the marketplace had not yet opened; it is open now). The Framework concept meant that I could get that RAM and SSD capacity at a lower cost than if I had gone with an ultralight where those components are soldered down. (Try pricing out an XPS with 32 GB and 2 TB!)
    (Why the prebuilt rather than a DIY? I can use all the parts so it ended up being less expensive for me. If I hadn't had a use for the included RAM stick and SSD I would have gone DIY. Since I replaced the SSD I had to reinstall Windows anyway but my machine was already licensed.)
    I have already convinced one less technical person to buy one. She came to me looking for advice on a new laptop and was shopping for systems in this price class. She had been considering a Surface Laptop, a system that is the antithesis of the repairable Framework; when I brought over my Framework and showed how simple it is to repair should that ever be needed, she was sold. I'll probably end up doing those repairs if they happen; I'm fine with that.
    I first used it with a Logitech wireless mouse, but later shifted to a Microsoft Bluetooth mouse to get the port back. I've tried some Logitech Bluetooth mice and wasn't happy with any of them. The cheap Microsoft mouse is a good replacement for Logitech's M325: small, simple, and inexpensive (under $15 delivered in the cheapest color, pastel blue). I also convinced my friend to buy one. I am neither a Microsoft fangirl nor an anti-Microsoft crusader; when they make a product that suits my needs I'll buy it, which is why I advocated against buying the Surface Laptop but in favor of Microsoft's mouse.
    Framework got just about everything right for a system in this class. I have read the comments by people who want a larger screen, dedicated graphics, and a Ryzen option; I agree that a laptop with all of those things would be a fine second product for Framework, but it wouldn't hit my personal sweet spot for a system that is easy to carry.

    Great video and definitely the most thorough review I’ve found of this laptop so far. Did you happen to do any testing with any other OS or in windows 10? My biggest concern right now is battery life and under 5 hours of active use isn’t workable for me sadly, but I’m guessing the windows 11 beta isn’t as optimized for battery as it will be at release.

      Actually Windows 11 is a lighter OS than Win 10 and has less background processes so is better for battery life.

    A just ordered one from batch 8 in the UK. I'm glad they've made it this far! Thanks for the useful review. Everything is within my expectations so far. I've made all the same choices you did except I'll probably put Linux on it, at least at first.
    I suppose if Framework fail it's still possible for others to make accessories or build on the concept. Maybe.
    One idea I have is that as my kids get older I might get more Framework laptops and parts can be handed down. If they manage to make a bigger, more powerful base model but many of the parts are still interchangable, that could be useful. I know it's been useful in a multi-PC household being able to swap parts around, even if just for doing diagnosis.

    I want to thank you from my heart for making this video .It's super helpful and knowledgeable .
    Very detailed ,well explained ,well covered topics very honest review .Thank you .
    I am a novice in the field of technology and I have been doing some research to find myself a great budgeted lap top since past 4 days and I did happen to learn alot about laptops and there was always something I didn't like in every lap top .Then I thought is it possible to make our own laptop according to our configuration? and then I surprisedly came across Frame work and was very happy .
    Then I had a question about upgrading Framework to AMD and you explained it very nicely . You did a great job .
    We should suport this company and I am ordering mine today to support .I believe in this company and I am sure they will do very well . I wish they had a bigger screen laptop .
    The best part that made me very happy and proud is that the founder and CEO of Framework is Nirav Patel who is an Indian. Best of luck to Framework .

    The Framework laptop to me is the best secondary device for a pc enthusiast. What I mean by this is that this a great laptop for someone who already has a beefy desktop at home and want something that is ultra portable to do some work on. For me I am still going to compile my code at home, but when I am out and about I can use the Framework to write code.

    I think upgrading the GPU will be far less important than changing a worn port or the hinge, the keyboard, the fan etc... So having the GPU soldered is not a big deal. Even having the RAM soldered is ok. I don't usually upgrade that often and I haven't had a faulty processor or RAM module. If it's working during the warranty usually they work for at least a decade. But having the ability to fix everything else makes me feel super calm!

    The Intel Xe GPU is actually pretty capable. I got the I5 model and its Geekbench 5 compute score (Vulkan) was only 1000 points less than a GTX 960M (10498 vs 11453). I know I know, GTX 960M isn't particularly new or powerful, but it was once a mainstream dedicated mobile GPU nonetheless. Fedora 35 has been running super smooth and responsive on the device, and I am very satisfied.

  • @ClaymorePT
    @ClaymorePT 2 года назад +4

    I think you kinda miss a bit when discussing the target market.
    This computer is perfectly acceptable in the EU market for example. Apple products are not as liked here in the EU as they are in the US, mainly because of how hard it is to get Apple to actually fix their own products when they broke.
    Also, as Louis Rosman referred, the Framework laptop is easily reparable by any third-party reparable service. This for me is a big win, specially to those clients who are tired of paying big bugs just because Apple and other computer sellers are unwilling to fix their own products, forcing their clients to buy new ones.

    Since 100 C is "normal" for this, is there software that can alert me if the CPU is going into thermal throttling? Because if there was ever an actual problem with the cooler, I'd want an automated warning or something. Especially on a laptop where I can get to the cooler easily and airblast it (or replace if broken)

    Nice review! I was looking forward to see a performance and use test beyond the usual (and well deserved) "oooh, it's serviceable!".
    If I may, there's a part that is inaccurate, contradictory with the rest, and maybe misleading:
    "If Framework becomes another casualty, I'm left with a laptop that's just as serviceable or upgradeable as an Apple product."
    Even if the company disappeared and never built new modules or specific components, you'd still be left with a much more modular and easy to open laptop, with no damn glue, with good documentation, user-friendly guides and lots of off-the-shelf upgradeable or swappable components. So, even in that case, it'd still be in a totally different league compared to an Apple product.

    • @ElevatedSystems
      @ElevatedSystems  2 года назад +1

      Answer this. If Framework is no more how would I upgrade this laptop to a 12th gen intel, or replace the battery when it degrades, or replace a cracked display or blown speaker? I can replace generic SMDs and generic components on any laptop, but much of the Framework is still proprietary.

    • @eldelacajita
      @eldelacajita 2 года назад +3

      @@ElevatedSystems I agree with all that. It's just that leaving it at the same level of an Apple product in terms of serviceability. even in that case, seemed excessive to me.

    • @ElevatedSystems
      @ElevatedSystems  2 года назад +1

      @@eldelacajita At this point in time 3rd party and aftermarket replacement components are easy to get for most Apple products. I can basically rebuild an entire MacBook if I need to. The process sucks but it can be done.

    bizzarly enough, my productivity needs are more geared towards a 16:9 ratio as I work with tiling terminals, and having 4 terminals tiled on the screen, I wouldn't have enough width, and lines would wrap so much more and would be painful to read.
    I would also prefer ryzen, just to get more cores because I actually need them, but I can do without, not a big requirement for me.
    so yeah, if they get a 16:9 ratio one out there, I'll definitely grab it, might take a few years before they manage it, but I believe in them. I just hope my current laptop lasts that long
