840 Seat Airbus A380? One Airline Almost Made This Happen...

  • The megastructure that is the A380 is quite a sight to behold, and quite an aircraft to fly on too. But all that space means there’s a lot of room for airlines to put their own stamp on the aircraft too. Around the world, we’ve seen a huge variation on the A380 layout, with one airline even proposing an all-economy 840 seat layout.

@@ksmashgamer5748 I'm horribly afraid it could! Just for a few holiday destinations, though.... I wonder how many low-cost airlines were looking at how well the Malaysian Airlines A380 did on the Palmna - Manchester recovery flights when Thomas Cook collapsed? In truth, it did pretty well, and of course in that situation the aircraft was full. There are no A380 special facilities at Palma (there are at Manchester) so the passengers were bussed out to the aircraft at Palma and climbed up movable steps to board - very much in keeping with standard UK low-cost airline operating practice. So I wonder if there might not be a small number of routes that might suppport an old, cheap, leased A380 during the summer months. Destination airports might be Palma or Alicante, origin airports would be Gatwick, Stansted or Manchester. Two return flights a day would be 8 hours operating time or so. If the lease cost was low-enough (and there are quite a few early A380s available now) that might be viable between May and September....

Is an all-economy layout really as "passenger-unfriendly" as you claim? I mean, even in planes with a premium cabin, passengers sitting in economy don't get to sit in it, nor do they any extra legroom in their own economy seats. The way this video presents things, you'd think it was an utter travesty for airlines to offer economy at all.

I don't get it... why would an A380 with so much passengers necessarily be more uncomfortable for economy class passengers than an A380 with less economy class and more premium class seats? In the end, it's more about things like leg space that decides whether people find a plane comfortable, not the amount of people on board, isn't it?

People are still happy to pay for cheap economy seats on budget airlines, there is a mass market for budget travel. I believe that a budget airline operating all economy class configured A380s between Australia and destinations in Europe, North America, South America and Asia would work. Basically something like Scoot or Jetstar but operating the A380 to carry large numbers and offer very cheap prices. Imagine SYD-LHR return for AUD500.

Emirates have a number of the two-class (Business/Economy) A380s now; I've flown on them a few times, including on the Manchester - Dubai route. The upper deck economy section is configured 8-across (2-4-2), compared with 10-across (3-4-3) in economy on the lower deck. Emirates also charge quite a lot more to reserve a seat in the 2-across sections of economy on the upper deck compared with economy seats elsewhere in the aircraft.
Several of the flights I've taken on Emirates A380s were either immediately followed by, or where immediately after, a flight to/from Dubai in an Emirates 777. I can't really explain how this is, but I always thought that somehow the A380s felt a little bit nore spacious and comfortable, although I can't point any specific aspects of either aircraft and say "this is wider/longer/more comfortable on the A380".

I understand that the A380 is a bit wider than the 777, but I had a feeling that the actual seats were the same; perhaps they're just more tightly squeezed together on the 777? I didn't know that the 777 was so noisy, however. Although I should have - there's a resaon for all those videos about GE90 engines spooling up...

It is impossible to have 868 seat configuration because of the 90 seconds evacuation rule. During testing Airbus several times tried evacuate 840 Passengers within 90 seconds but they just couldn’t do it. So even if an Airline wants 840 seat configuration they can’t have it.

    • @KyrilPG
      @KyrilPG 4 года назад

That's absolutely false! Airbus managed to certify correctly for evacuation with 840+ passengers in less than 90 seconds with half the doors only.

Hmmm... When you say that an "all-economy" airplane is "the most passenger-unfriendly way" to configure the plane, you should remember that the vast majority of passengers wouldn't find it less friendly than a 3-class configuration, 'cause the vast majority of passengers can't afford a seat in business class or first class. Moreover, for the environment (and thus for us, living inhabitants of planet Earth) an all-economy configuration is the best option. Finally, there's that quote of Elaine from "Seinfeld" (when the flight attendant throws her out of first class, to which she snuck in): "you know, our goal should be a society without classes!".

The remaining 30 seats could be for crew. A plane that big would need a lot of crew

Wonder how a Saudi prince would configure his private a380. 5 suites on the upper deck (for 4 of your partying friends ) with a lounge and 20 rooms and kitchen for the servants on the lower deck

Save all that tedious mucking about with passengers pretending to be comfortable in economy. How about knocking us out and putting us in a box, then loading us a in cargo configuration. Revive us at the destination with a cup of tea. Bet you could get over 1000 passengers in that A380.

for those who really love A 380 I want to tell you that due to a lot of technical problem Airbus is stopping the manufacture of this from 2021

Not due to technical problems but due to lack of demand on huge aircrafts

What's the point of this video? The A380 is done, production will be end soon. The economics are just not working out.

Entertainment maybe? Are we not allowed to talk about the A380 anymore just because it won’t be produced?

      Hey Piwinter -
      1) Airbus still believes in a second hand market for the Airbus A380. This could mean we may see low cost airlines buying older A380's for cheap. Airbus provided Simple Flying with a statement here: simpleflying.com/airbus-a380-second-hand/
      2) Entertainment, and the fact that Air Austral did have a historic order for an all economy class A380 - not everyone knows this without digging into the Airbus order books.

@@KasabianFan44 of course you're allowed to talk about anything you like. It's a wonderful plane but unfortunately not profitable enough. I'm certain it will remain in the cargo & special projects business. But a video about new passenger configurations just seems nonsensical to me at this stage. But have at it!
