They find a few saddos and a few with a bit of talent and they decide whether they are appropriate for the main show. 99.9% of applicants will not get anywhere accept maybe a large warehouse being watched by staff members to see if they are sad/talented/desperate enough or got a sad enough story or are black/ethnic/fat/very attractive/ugly but talented/ugly and untalented... The list goes on. GET A GRIP PEOPLE. Also if you observe the faces of the contestants when they are told they are bad, they look surprised, this is because they are bigged up by the staff before they see the judges so that they believe they are good so they try hard and are made to look even more ridiculous.
