I've never once even thought of Carpenter Brut as synthwave. It's always been Carpenter Brut's music. I always figured most of it was darkwave with metal and rock influences.
The church cross reflection in the puddle was cool subtle effect, and the raven’s eye. I hope the director and David make a habit of creating art together.
I tend to introduce a lot of people to Sythwave because most people are sleeping on it still even though it's been around for a minute now. But this is one song I will definitely not show someone who's never heard synth because the vocals are horrible and I wouldn't want people to think that is what all vocals in synth sound like.
Let's spend 2 years on deciphering this? My take: First off, the video definitely alludes to Ozymandias (2:30): a tale of how all great things find their end in a passage of time. We see the collapse of the past Gods (3:20), fall of the 'modern' civilization and the giant alien invaders overtaking the realm of all life (3:55) before their inevitable decay with all things (0:50). And yet, we see old Gods overseeing the events as there is no time (2:36-2:48, 3:22) - to Gods there is no time, so there are no "old" Gods - we just forget about them which opens the door for corruption of the soul - this is the reason why we see the church and the standing God untouched in every timeline in the video. The "alien beasts" in my opinion represent the triumph of corruption. We see in the video individuals being possessed and torn apart by the black goo, which is essentially corruption of the soul. But as we know it doesn't stop there and unless stopped it will continue to grow larger and larger until it walks around and destroys the whole city, the whole civilization. Seen this in China, been there in USSR, almost certainly happens somewhere as we speak. I also love the touch that these big all-destroying aliens still die in the end, because you need to have a society to live even if your only purpose is to make it worse. So at some point after all the power grab there will be nothing left. (2:40) The crown is the Jewel. The Jewel in a crown typically represents some kind of enlightenment (like a nimbus) and self-awareness/self-consciousness. Egyptian God Horus, which is present in the lyrics and video, is an embodiment of the Jewel in more contemporary religions such as Christianity. The jewel is more specifically the Third Eye or the Eye of the Horus, such as the eye on top of the pyramid it historically represents the act of 'Seeing things for what they are' or better put - the opposite of wishful blindness. We see the glowing eye on the bird here in the video as an another allusion to the crown or God (Horus, the Eye). The bird departs as the Gods 'die' at 3:28. This might be a link to the famous Nietzschean "God is Dead" notion that packs in itself a story of the fall of all humanity once they lose their Gods. And indeed, in the video, immediately after we see the great fall and a variety of monsters overtaking the Humankind. Most notably we see the corrupted human (1:55) in a match-cut superimposed on the monster bug (3:58). The black scenes are the 'corruption' scenes and we see how it grows from within a person. We see how the darkness overtakes and then devours the person (1:53) and the small cockroaches (2:18) grow up to the size of a skyscraper, ultimately devouring everything in the end (3:58). In my opinion this is one of the most profound works I've seen. I've been listening and watching this since it came out, almost nonstop. I think the usage of the words Horus, Set and Serekh are extremely important. And I think the music video itself, takes place in a present time (post apocalypse), and a past time (cyberpunk future city). Horus and Set are the prominent figures throughout. Seemingly being the only 2 gods remaining in a blasted worn out world. Having standing statues and physical embodiment's as a falcon and jackal can be seen. The only other creatures, lizards ,scorpions and roaches. Horus is seen carrying eggs elsewhere, and being present above the chapel (one of the only buildings we see survive, from cyberpunk past, to present time apocalypse). In my mind, representing Horus as the goodness of whatever is left, having taken the life of the egg, and whatever hope was left in the chapel, and flying onward, into the next horizon to find a place untouched by whatever those decedents of humankind are, those black tar creatures. Segue into Set, who we see utterly ripping and tearing one of the "black tar" creatures to sunder. Completely disregarding any preordained religious sense of Set "judging the heart by the weight of a feather". On the contrary, there are no hearts among the black tar creatures. Rip and tear, as Set always does. I believe it is an image of our most evil of selves. As we exist, as countries, sociologically, being reliant on fossil fuels. The the things we do, as people, to get and make oil, the things it does the world around us, deprives the soul of our existence beyond the "measuring" of a feather. Serekh is, as quoted by Wikipedia, "..the earliest convention used to set apart the royal name in ancient Egyptian iconography..". We see the image of a crown in the streets, and is immediately transposed to the modern day, rusted and worn beyond repair, not a single image of its former egotistical glory remains. A broken Serekh. Shattered by hubris, greed, ignorance, bloated beyond sustainable measures, thrones for pompous nobles, as far as the eye can see. The transitional image of the cross on the church, to being upside down in the puddle next to the crown. I believe the part of the pretext of this, is the image of the serpents growing out of the ground in the beginning. As if, the nutrient of the soil only provide for the snake and the tree, setting the stage of the typical "adam and eve and the snake in the tree". But now its literal serpents growing out, as trees. Implying that the land has been tainted beyond comprehension. I believe the giant skulls were also specifically representing the death of the world around us. Again, speaking in terms of sociological impact in reference to how we as humans exist, cows and herd animals are how we feed our people. We bloat them and change them.. doing whatever it "takes", to get it. Just as we do with oil. I think their skulls stood for all the creatures we treat in such fashions. Nothing larger than a small lizard can survive in that kind of desert. To be honest, the giant teddy bear screams the representation of a future generation. But not for life of the wild, as in my mind, as is represented by Horus, but rather whatever Human generations are left picking through the tech of the old world. Whatever strain of humans are left picking through the decaying pieces, they amount to nothing but sitting in the sand. Watching the rust blow by in the wind in a dying world like a worn out teddy bear with no child like spark that comes from living in a world that has life and meaning. We see the image of a space craft, in my mind, a physical actor for the cataclysm, the triggering event that caused everything to spiral out of control. Humans losing all sense of moral internal identity, economy falling as people refuse to change the gears of the system. Bureaucracy of state and influence clogging the pipelines and making it all come to a halt, while the people who had the ability to grab and run, did so. In the last few scenes I think we bare witness to the end times. The corruption of the land bursting forth like "claws" grasping up into the land like the hands of the dead unleashed by Set. The cockroach and black tar creatures stampeding their way through the dying city-scape. Earlier, we also see the roaches closing in on church (the intent of their deeds displayed by the quick stills of scorpion tails around the church), which I think might display the curse of the dying industrial world, and its constant act to infest whatever sense of hope is left in the "church", "faith", "humanity". Which, is quickly dispelled by Horus, but at the end of the video, flys off to new lands, knowing this one is lost like so many others. Set being the darker side of whatever life is left, being driven to desperate ends, yet cleansing the world of our ancestors failures. Still deciphering.. probably will be deciphering for months. the lyrics to me always felt like a pharoah or a king feeling remorseful for living so greedily and violently. it's almost like he was reborn in modern day into riches, yet he lived the same way he did all those centuries ago, and now he is truly punished for it.
Fantastic collaboration! Love David Eugene Edwards' massive tribal drums and how he fuses Native American, Ancient Egyptian & Christian symbolism in his lyrics!!! Great work of art gentlemen! 🖤🙏🖤
Was not expecting to se 16 Horsepower as I searched that name. I usually don't like heavy religious themes but the melancholy, anxiety and bleak view of humanity in their songs managed to supercede that. Also their cover of Bad Moon Rising is something to experience
I know this song does not please all old Carpenter Brut fans. But consider me a new fan. This is absolutely massive and deeper than expected. Its helping me through some dark times, thanks Carpenter Brut and the sinister glory that is David Eugene Edwards
Brut is probably my biggest inspiration in composing synthwave music. He is legend. This is a completely new sound, a very interesting experimentation. Only THE Carpenter Brut could achieve combining new elements with his signature sound. Really looking forward for his upcoming sequel of Leather Teeth.
I haven't been able to stop listening to this for the last day and don't know what any of it supposed to mean, other than the implication of something epic.
@@lukaskubinec9608 I like to think it's a king telling of a great victory over his enemies. Like the inscription by Ramses 111 about his triumph over sea people in the bronze age collapse. He bragged hard and meant it even though it was a pyrrhic victory. Meaning that he sure did crush his enemies, but they had destroyed so much of the surrounding civilization Egypt fate was sealed. I highly recommended looking into the bronze age collapse, we don't even know who exactly these sea people were, but they were enough to cause the equivalent of an apocalypse.
@@darksepheroth4627 that's very interesting interpretation and I think most likely very accurate, thank you for sharing that. Also the UFO spaceship wreck could symbolize that like Ramses annihilated sea people same will happen to us too? We people always think we are supreme until something/someone more advanced shows us that we are just still animals although possible of rational thinking and emotions.
Why? At least from the theme's perspective the fall of humankind was depicted in Brut's music before and I'm not surprised David agreed - wovenhand music sometimes has postapocalyptic vibes too. Personally this colab brought me huge happiness.
When I saw the announcement that Carpenter Brut was working with Edwards, I wondered how that was going to sound. And it sounds magisterial as expected.
3:09 Guys, I see two crosses (on the ends of the ribcage), but neither is upside down. Thought maybe the whole goddamn planet is upside down then. Well, took me a couple of minutes of looking, but actually: the poles of the roadsigns are the inverted crosses.
What a strange collab. I'm also a big fan of Wovenhand and I must say I really like the result. It makes me wish for a record full of songs like this (just like I wished for a grave pleasures x carpenter brut album).
the first day this came out I was disappointed except for the visuals, "what is this 1400 ancient music" , then after a week, this song grew on me, i cant forget it, its a mixture of acoustic instruments with Carpenter brut's unique synth, and the melody doesn't exist anywhere else but CB, gives me the chills. Forgive me for doubting this amazing artist.
Your first impressions were correct, imo. The visual effects seem strangely mismatched. With the motifs of the giant insects and Egyptian monuments you would expect something more spectacular/grandiose/intense and oriental sounding whereas this sounds more like a B track on a Mumford and sons album. Which is unfortunate, because the visual effects are phenomenal. It doesn’t even sound distinctively like carpenter brut if we compare to some of his other songs. It definitely doesn’t sound like a synthwave song. I can appreciate if Carpenter wants to be original rather than restrict himself to a particular genre or style of music, but I think that should come later in your music career once you’ve established a signature. Personally I want to see more synthwave cinematic fusions in the vein of his other songs. I don’t think I’d be such a harsh critic if Turbo Killer wasn’t such a visuo-audial masterpiece. Thats the problem with setting such high standards I suppose. That being said, I’d always prefer that they focus on the process of creating art rather than trying to meet audience expectations. Its always interesting when something misses the mark so we can appreciate it from a different angle. It gives the critics something to chew on.
Love this. The percussion and vocals are excellent. I'm really surprised by all the "this isn't like CB's other work" comments though; go back and listen to EP II's Obituary or EP III's Invasion AD - you can hear the DNA for Fab Tool in both of those songs.
This reminds me of Ulver, I wonder if his collab with Kristoffer Rygg (on Cheeleader Effect) had an impact on his sound. I can't wait to hear more of this, I love the new direction
Been absolutely hooked by this since it was released. Amazing atmospherics. Love this direction. Always innovating as usual. Video is a perfect match too. I always fall in love with any type of media that deals with colossal scale set pieces. Amazing!

I'm listening to this track for the thousandth time and i just realised... humanity NEEDS a Wovenhand x Carpenter Brut crossover album.
same here!!! yes, I don't know how they met each other but we need more of this.
Meh. You'll get what you deserve.
This was my thought, even only halfway through my first listen! I love 16HP/Wovenhand/DEE and I love Carpenter Brut, but this is bigger than the sum of its parts!
The Carpenter Brut expanded universe is pretty wild huh
WITH DAVID EUGENE EDWARDS, WHAAAAT :O
i know right
He came back, and even brought the milk with him.
This movie clip is literraly insane, creepy and beautiful in the same time, thanks for that Carpenter Brut
Check Dehn Sora for more! Really talented dude!
" A small click for a human, a Carpenter Brut for humanity" - Neil Armstrong
Everything is better with David Eugene Edwards and that's just a fact.
yeah man, CORRECT! i found this because i was searching for eugene edwards and holly shit what a song. the singing of edwards ooohhh shit, damn epic and beautiful
Accurate.
This would be better with no vocals, especially these vocals.
@@nightmaster6381 Graduate from school
@@ryanstanley7158 I graduated from the University of Eugine Edwards Sucks with top honors. Totally butchers this song. His music and vocals are crap. Carpenter Brute needs to release an instrumental version of this song without the vocal diarrhea stain of Eugine Edwards.
That was the most epic cosmic sci-fi horror music video ever. Of all time.
Bloodeborne vibes
Doom “Icon of Sin” making an appearance too. “Beware the old blood”
This gets better every relistening
Carpenter Brut coming together with *DAVID EUGENE EDWARDS* is something I only ever dreamed of... And now finally here it is!!
Southern Gothic and Dark Synthwave merged together at last 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
that drop at @1:48 "The heavens are filled with lead" ooooooof.
My fav part, excellent build up too!
Can we all just appreciate that album cover though
He says "Ancient of Days" in the lyrics. A really amazing painting by William Blake who also painted the famous Red Dragon.
Imagine if this was the trailer to a movie or game. My god. These guys are artistic geniuses.
its so hard to turn this off....
I have listened to this over and over and over....possibly more than any song i've ever had
something very intriguing and hypnotic about it
the lyrics to me always felt like a pharoah or a king feeling remorseful for living so greedily and violently. it's almost like he was reborn in modern day into riches, yet he lived the same way he did all those centuries ago, and now he is truly punished for it.
Fantastic collaboration! Love David Eugene Edwards' massive tribal drums and how he fuses Native American, Ancient Egyptian & Christian symbolism in his lyrics!!! Great work of art gentlemen! 🖤🙏🖤
YES its a perfect collab. Its genius
god, this song got me an itch i can't scratch cuz this is probably the only song they have together (praying so it's not the only one)
Absolutely love this, shame Carpenter hasn't made anything similar after this.
Holy fuck this aint just music, its a goddamn spiritual journey
Experiences like this are how religions get started
That'll be David Eugene Edwards input.
So awesome!!! That bass drop is killer 'heavens are filled with lead'
...
Ooh!!!
Carpenter Brut is picking up where he left off. He became the next real deal of music after Kavinsky went MIA since 2014.
Legend.
Kavinsky is teasing a return on his twitter, don't know how this will turn.
"Horus thrives with the cattle"
Interesting ancient Egyptian themes in the lyrics. The god Horus, and Hor-Aha ruler in the first dynasty
Lots of mentions of Native-American tribes too.
Song of the Year, Music Video of the Year, a true hit and work of art
100%
"This sounds like Wovenhand, even the singer sounds the same."
*Looks at title again*
"Oh, it really is the same guy, nice!"
Brut is probably my biggest inspiration in composing synthwave music. He is legend.
This is a completely new sound, a very interesting experimentation. Only THE Carpenter Brut could achieve combining new elements with his signature sound.
Really looking forward for his upcoming sequel of Leather Teeth.
yess same
I haven't been able to stop listening to this for the last day and don't know what any of it supposed to mean, other than the implication of something epic.
SAME! the music and vocals are mesmerising. Its just stupidly amazing. Blown away
⌛☄️☄️
Fall of mankind is what my brain thinks it is. Done the carpenter's way though. Damn, all those symbols and hidden references.
Well that went from "alright not bad" to on repeat for hours. Beyond hyped for the full showing!
I found a haiku in your lyrics, genius!
"What’s in the big ditch
Holy Roman giv’em hell
That a bait and switch"
that chorus before the end, love it. Completely sold it to me on that one, well done.
From 3.35 onwards, just sends shivers down my spine. That sound is beautiful.
The power of synthwave.
3:35
So you have easy access to your favorite part
Discovered David Eugene Edwards through this, can't get enough of this guy these days. Can't believe he isn't more well known, dude is incredible.
The Midwich Brut Church Hymns are popping off!
This is definitely a departure from earlier works. He's evolving. It even has something of spiritual feel too it.
One of the sickess drops I've ever heard. It was perfect.
I could never imagine these two worlds colliding. Hallelujah
Why? At least from the theme's perspective the fall of humankind was depicted in Brut's music before and I'm not surprised David agreed - wovenhand music sometimes has postapocalyptic vibes too. Personally this colab brought me huge happiness.
I need a whole album of this, stat
David Eugene Edwards!!! Wtf!!! How did I miss this? Great!!!!
Simply, wow! Amazing production, wonderful soundscape, great vocals, cinematic and industrial vibes, superb!
When I saw the announcement that Carpenter Brut was working with Edwards, I wondered how that was going to sound. And it sounds magisterial as expected.
This is the next Carpenter Brut Step. A Big Step !
A big step away from synths
@@alexxx4434 Not really ???
@@alexxx4434 dude do you know what synthesizers are..?
@@BruceWayne-je9wk Yeah they have keyboards and make sounds such as the ones you hear in this video.
@@alexxx4434 I don't think you know what synths do...
It's rare that i watch the music video while listening to a song, but with this one, i do it every single time. It's just magic.
one of the best songs and vids ive ever seen and heard.
Came for the synth, stayed for the OAAAAAAOOAAAAAAH.
(3:07)
Thank you for perfectly combining synthwave and stoner/doom metal. This is absolutely amazing.
3:09 Guys, I see two crosses (on the ends of the ribcage), but neither is upside down. Thought maybe the whole goddamn planet is upside down then. Well, took me a couple of minutes of looking, but actually:
the poles of the roadsigns are the inverted crosses.
Funnily enough, the guy who sings it is a devout Christian.
@@davidgan1x879 Well not your typical one! Check his IG
@@ostracized666ther2 what’s on his IG?
David Eugene Edwards brought me here, thank goodness he did, Carpenter Brut rabbit hole here (hear) I go..
Fantastic! Seems like anything passing through DEE's hands is pure Art!
Song of the year! Thanx for making this collaboration happen, CB!
What a strange collab. I'm also a big fan of Wovenhand and I must say I really like the result. It makes me wish for a record full of songs like this (just like I wished for a grave pleasures x carpenter brut album).
Agree, this collab is sick
ROYAL DIADEM
David Eugene Edwards's vocals mash so well with Carpenter Brut's sound. I love it.
So it was Wovenhand.I hadn't heard them in years.but the more I was listening this the more I suspected the voice.
David is such an underrated, versatile artist. What a legend!
Its like Brut ft. Rome...
Чем больше слушаю, тем сильнее нравится звук и картинка! Awesome! 👍
Wovenhand и Carpenter Brut
отлично смешались. Получился очень темный напиток.
the first day this came out I was disappointed except for the visuals, "what is this 1400 ancient music" , then after a week, this song grew on me, i cant forget it, its a mixture of acoustic instruments with Carpenter brut's unique synth, and the melody doesn't exist anywhere else but CB, gives me the chills.
I thought the visuals were spot on, like a modern day apocalypse caused by ancient gods
all hail the coming of the brut
2:04 Slenderman has back problems now, this is so sad
Love this. The percussion and vocals are excellent. I'm really surprised by all the "this isn't like CB's other work" comments though; go back and listen to EP II's Obituary or EP III's Invasion AD - you can hear the DNA for Fab Tool in both of those songs.
Man, I used to love 16 Horsepower. Great collaboration!
This is the best thing I've heard (and seen) in years!! need more! Please do a full album together. Wow!
This reminds me of Ulver, I wonder if his collab with Kristoffer Rygg (on Cheeleader Effect) had an impact on his sound.
I can't wait to hear more of this, I love the new direction
I think he may be on this album
My god... Every thing is perfect here.
Its look like Southern Gothic Americana with Horror/Dark Atmospheric Sounds, very special! Every Time One Step Front!!! Well Done!
Τι κομματάρα έβγαλε πάλι ;
David Eugene Edwards is like the King of Southern Gothic. This collaboration is PERFECT
Edwards spits mad fire at 2:22.
I was expecting the classic carpenter brut sound. This is a good shift of expectation. I love the way this track builds up.
This just fixed my year.
Been absolutely hooked by this since it was released. Amazing atmospherics. Love this direction. Always innovating as usual. Video is a perfect match too. I always fall in love with any type of media that deals with colossal scale set pieces. Amazing!
i wont lie this is definitely me when i see a massive bull skeleton in the post apocalyptic wastes
Don't forget the tall eqyptian figure and satellite dish.
@@te9591 Or the freaky looking coyote/jackal mix, or the Lovecraftian monstrosities.
This is, by far, my favorite tune from CB. So many feelings in this track...
Who else can’t stop listening to this?
Love it the thousandth time listening and will continue to love it especially living here planet earth in 2024
This song makes me feel like I can save the world.
4 minutes 19 seconds isn't enough time to process how epic this song is. Multiple replays are required.
I knew it would be good, but I never expected this. Carpenter Brut got his hands dirty on the Blood Machines OST and wanted more. Superb stuff, and an excellent choice to use Edwards for the lyrics.
This is a collaboration I would listen a whole album of easily
im so glad i see industrial rock and darkwave again...im loving this revival ...
Just having a Tool moment and i love it
This was incredible, Brut. Thank you so much for the track.
The theme is absolutely amazing, for amazing sound too.
I am looking forward to hearing more from this new dark and twisted universe of sound.
Wish this was on the new album. I keep having to come back to find it on RUclips.
This is glorious, Carpenter Brut never disappoints.
This is a collaboration I couldn´t even dream of
Brilliant on all fronts. Here's hoping an album of this follows...
I don't know why, but this is giving me some Rammstein meets Depeche Mode vibes.
If you're only limited to more mainstream music.. Otherwise try with Sisters of Mercy meets WovenHand.
@@premmisseth Oh I listen to a wide range of music, that's just what popped into my head is all.
@@premmisseth I wouldn't say Rammstein is mainstream.
And the visuals give American Gods vibes.
@@premmisseth holy shit that's pretentious. Of course it sounds like Woven Hand, because David Eugene Edwards is the singer in that band. To me, the Rammstein x Depeche Mode is much more on point than your "The singer of this song" + Sisters of Mercy. In the end it is percieved differently but god damn
I will never get over this.
This song scared the shit out of my cat. It is, therefore, an exceptionally good song.
Lmao good guy
Masterpiece, and stunning work as usual from Dehn Sora
My love of Woven Hand brought me here , I love the music and David this was beyond excellent
Incredible visuals, strong music and obvious mastery of lyricism. I just listened to something similar a few mins ago and the writing difference is obvious. You can tell the writers process is long and painful with many iterations but the product is unique which is so hard to find these days.
