“Never give up, never surrender!” - Jason Nesmith (Tim Allen), GalaxyQuest
1999 was a busy year for Stan Winston Studio, and as the century came to a close, the studio's final project for the year was #GalaxyQuest. Dean Parisot directed the comedy starring Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, and Alan Rickman as has-been stars of a canceled science fiction show - sharing a strong resemblance to the original STAR TREK series - who are sought out by real-life aliens, the Thermians, to save their species from extinction.
Stan Winston and his crew created the "true forms" of the octopus-like Thermians, as well as bad-guy alien Sarris, his reptilian henchmen, and an alien Pig Lizard who suffers a sad fate.

Everyone who worked on this movie just had so much love and respect for it and it shows, absolutely incredible work on an already incredible premise, and it was executed beautifully!!!...
By grabthar's hammer this movie is GREAT! thanx for sharing some behind the scene magic :)
Always loved the look of Sarris, such awesome special affects
Great choice of thumbnail. RIP Stan and Robin. Masters of makeup and acting. 💜
This is the best! Love this movie ☆ Pure magic☆ Thank you!
I loved this movie and all the practical effects and creature design really added to it.
Those Alien monsters are amazing!!!
The SWS work in this film is just incredible.
The practical masks are FANTASTIC
Amazing work
Just rewatched with friends, having a great time. This movie is so cool, but I'd happily watch also 100 minutes of behind the scenes! Super makeup and FX
This is truly one of my top 5 movies. I watch it at least 2 to 3 times a year
Amazing work. For all of these years I could not tell if Sarris was a mask or make up. What I mean is I could not tell if the eyes and mouth were animatronic or prosthetics.
I am still unsure how it works, but I can see that the eyes belong to the actor. They are just wearing contact lenses.
To understand how to make a mask/make up like that is a course I would love to take.
Incredible
I always thought the practical effects looked so good in this movie, and now I see that - of course - it's because the Stan Winston school did them! 💖 Been kicking ass for decades.
I wish they'd do a sequel
Beautiful work!
Good
Very interesting and worthwhile video.
Great film
Is it possible for you guys to do a video on how SWS got the facial movements for Sarris's face?
I 2nd this! I've always wondered how this was accomplished.
For sure! Looking at this video it does not sound like any servos running.
If this is animated with just face movement, that would be a break through for street performers and cosplayers.
I've been study similar tech used for Star War's Chewy, and the 1990's Island of Doctor Monroe. This seems like that taken to the next level.
Agreed! They used the self contained approach that they developed when they were trying to get Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes. Maybe you've seen those tests with Matt and Stan Winston. I'd love to know how that was done exactly - they've held it as a trade secret, but at this point, maybe it could be shared Matt.
@@stevek5370 I never saw those test. I will go look for them now.
Yes I agree that looked so realistic Imagine that in a cosplay environment I wish I knew how to do that to a Mask it makes the mask almost come to life with facial movements
Very good 👍 great show
I liked behind the scenes from galaxy 🌌 quest.
At 1:36 idk why but I thought that was so COOL that mask with facial movements looked so realistic imagine that in a Cosplay environment damn I wish I knew how to do that for a Mask that is Next Level stuff
Thank you for this wonderful video! Some of the best work that SWS has done featured in this film. To this day Im blown away by the wonderful creature effects (Sarris is just an absolute king and would deserve his own movie). Beautiful and inspiring work! Thank you!
Que maravilla, me encantan los FX de la vieja escuela, el CGI nunca podrá igualar a algo fisico, y además teneis los mejores artistas capaces de hacer realidad cualcuier cosa por imposible que parezca..
The rest of the work is top notch and all...but I'd consider that Piglizard a real feather in your cap. That's one of the first things I think about when I think about Galaxy Quest.
"I would like to blow this troublesome ship INTO DUST"
Nice
Mágico, como siempre haciendo de la ordinaria realidad extraordinaria, saludos desde México.
Practical affects are way better than modern day CGI
Amazing, for all these years I’d assumed the main villain Sarris was half prosthetic animatronics half digital manipulation, nope, all Winston wizardry. Wow.
The evil sounding voice helps also.
Never give up, never surrender;)
Always give up, Always surrender ;)
Anymore information I can find on how the Sarris appliance works?
By Grabthar's Hammer, by the Sons of Warvan, your video shall be liked!
Always felt they should have made a sequel where the pirates find earth, and "Invade us" I mean its earth against space pirates how bad can it be with the help of alien allies, this In turn will further more push Reality mimicking art, for earth will start turning into the galaxy quest universe, exposing aliens to the world and tech and who to say the actual pirates species are evil they are just a small part of them, their species as a larger view could be a part of a galactic senate and feel bad that some of their kind attacked earth and comically and idiotically ask earth to join the league forcing earth to make a star fleet ? lol idk im high...and yes I know Tim Allen is a conservative, I am not...so fucking what!? what our actors beliefs are shouldn't matter, we can still enjoy their art the man didn't kill anyone for christ sake, again im high lmfao im ranting like an old man
