- Towards the end of World War II, many information about advanced aeronautical technology were captured in Germany by the U.S. Forces. One of them was an analysis of the studies carried out by Dr. Alexander Lippisch on delta winged aircraft. Based upon the information, the Douglas firm developed the F4D Skyray, the only operational interceptor with delta wings in the U.S. Navy. Starting the design in 1947, Douglas was awarded a contract for the construction and testing of two prototypes in December 1948. The first prototype took off on its maiden flight in January 1951. The second prototype flew shortly thereafter and the airframe set two new world records, absolute speed record of 1,211 km/h and 100km closed course record of 1,171km/h, in October 1953...

It’s not that I hate 1/72; I hate that I can’t SEE 1/72… However, I can see well enough to know you did an OUTstanding job - again! In addition, I do have to compliment Tamiya on the really great detail on this kit. With all your mad skills, it never hurts to start with a well-designed kit like this. But we’ve also seen you take crappy kits and turn them into masterpieces. Another killer model! Now, where’d I put my glasses…
Me too.. And it's getting difficult to handle the small parts because of arthritis and TFCC

But I wish people when doing this scheme realise that this Naval Squadron flew with NORAD as an interceptor, 24 hours on notice , all pilots in kit ready to go at a moments notice . The Skyray's were immaculate no steaks , or grease or wear marks. This was a land based Sqn.

all my models was 1/72 back in my childhood... and 25 alter I want to jump in this hobby again and 1/72 still my favorite scale :P
One of my very first models I ever built . I will never forget it. I cost me about 1.50 I was a little short on change , but the sales lady let me slide. I was 8 years old, I am 66 now. I blow it up with a firecracker, silky me!

Masking & Painting Canopy or clear parts
I use the following, bond for woodworking (aqueous vinyl acetate resin type emulsion type adhesive) use
Coloring with watercolor paint is possible. Apply thickly, spread using a thin bar and surface tension.
After painting drying, it becomes easier to peel off when warmed up
Curse you and your free hand inscribing!! Great build as always!
My only gripe is the music is too loud. Otherwise bad ass build!
Do you do all your cockpit interiors in flat black? Google images has pics showing the correct colors. I see a lot of RUclips builders making this mistake.

That's why last one was sold in our shop.Nicely done as always.However i must ask you, wasn't those early jet navy birds in light gull grey colored?Seems like you used color for, say Tomcats or even Hotnets...
Thanks!! Yes, I have used recommend color but the original colour from my can was slightly darker. That's why I have added more fading effects with white. In person, especially at daylight kit looks much brighter. All the best!! Dusan.

It do come in the 1/48 scale, I’m currently building it. It was discontinued in 2016 so you would have to buy the kit from eBay ect

The quality of Tamiya kits....if avergae modelling companies are a 7 or 8, then Tamiya is a 300
Dear Dusan, I watched the video over and over again. At 07:30 I still do not understand which 4 paint numbers you display upper left in the video. Is it a special mix to obtain that special blue base coat? Thanks in advance.

Can i use cheap and wide masking tape used for painting walls to mask bigger area on the model? like masking underside while painting upside?
Yes, try or test the tape on something like test subject. Because sometimes the tape can peal off the pain job. Tamiya/Kabuki/Aizu/Revell... tapes are made with much finer adhesive substance. All the best! Dusan.

F4D was/is a handsome airplane. Maybe my health will eventually improve enough the kit of this in the closet here can be completed as nicely as yours was.

As a trivia note, F4D is involved in one thing where I wish I could read minds and see my Dad's memory of when he was in USN being on a live fire landing exercise with the Marines and at least one F4D came in low, low, low, over beach firing rockets from pods on underwing pylons. That's a slightly different environment from the interceptor role! Oh, & if you don't have it already, look up a book titled Killer Rays, by Mark Frankel. Oh, another oh, turns out in addition to the 1/72 kit I still have Tamiya's 1/48 kit stashed away and had gotten as far as finishing the cockpit insert and the pilot.

Beautiful build. Here's my question. The video was 13 minutes long, but I know it didn't take you 13 minutes to build this plane. About how long does a typical build take? Because when I watch your videos, I think I can finish a plane off in less than 30 minutes. Just curious.

A kit like that will probably take 20-30 hours of work at least.

The first US-Navy jet that reached MACH 1 in level flight. It's Sad because it never was used in combat.
Yep, went into service after Korea, and went out of service just before Vietnam.
Well we can say that it's the super early version of the A-4 Skyhawk which is undoubtedly one of the best aircraft of all time. The Skyhawk project was based on the skyray this is why they have similar names and they do look pretty identical. The Skyhawk is still in service in Argentina and couple of other air forces with modern f-16 avionics, radar ,weaponry , engine etc. And still it's used as an aggressor in top gun , top aces and others , with big success, it even got a gun kill vs a hornet in less than a minute. The Skyhawk is a great jet , one of the best ever. Without the skyray the Skyhawk would may be never exist so it's a successful design as well!

Nikola 3333 The Skyray served the US Navy and Marine Corps from 1956 to 1964.
This was a US Navy carrier-based fighter from the early 1950's. Not many were built. Maybe 500 if that many. Pretty plane though.

Can someone recommend a good airbrush for beginners? I've always painted my models with old Email colour ... the results are not that bad but compared to airbrushed +weathered models it looks like a childs toy plane...
I dont want to spend several hundered € on a compressor + brush but it should be a decend one...
I can recommend, Procon boy Mr.Airbrush ver.2 WA 0.3mm and Sparmax SP-35. All the best!! Dusan.
