- Are old model kits any good? In this full build video of Revell’s venerable 1/48 EA-6A Intruder, I go back to the “modeling roots” to see how this 35 year old kit stacks up. After hearing a lot of folks complaining about some of the newer kits out there, I wondered if some have lost that “loving feeling” of model building by spending too much time focused on the negative rather than the positives. So I thought, why not build an old one to see what kits were like “back in the day” and maybe reconnect some folks to the joy of modeling before we spent time criticizing every new kit.

This kit was screaming Monogram when it was released.A true classic.
For sure. Definitely a classic that is still really fun to build.
I think a lot of modellers these days are what I would call model 'assemblers' and not model 'builders'. If I buy a kit that has some really obvious faults I will always have a go at scratch building a fix. I started in the hobby in the early 70's and basically just glued together what was in the box and painted it with no thought of if the model was the right shape or had missing details. I have been to a few model shows and there are always rivet counters who criticize every models faults yet never display any finished models of their own.
The Intruder looks awesome and just goes to show what a bit of TLC can do for an old kit. Great Job Chad!

Being a Navy guy, my first duty station was VA-42, The Green Pawns, NAS Oceana, Virginia Beach, VA circa 1970. Our squadron trained Navy A-6 pilots and their BN's. Many of our pilots and BN's went to Navy carriers and flew many combat missions in Vietnam. All of our instructors were hardened combat pilots/BN's. Some had even been shot down by Russian SAM's. This A6 had a few more "black boxes" IIR that contributed to the large section on the vertical stab. The version you built was not on your typical A6 Intruder. The really wild looking aircraft was the EA6B. A 4 seater version with many more "black boxes" . It could really make for a bad day for the bad guys. Beautiful build Chad, brought back a lot of memories....

Dear Chad, this is a gorgeous job! No matter the pass of the years, over this nice model of Revell/Monogram. The A-6 Intruder, is one of my favorite models, because their amazing role in Vietnam War, was descisive, and the plane looks so good. Your máster techniques weathering are awesome, very illustrative, and easy to follow. At last, you are the proud father of an old model, that's even a great model. This video really hit home for me. I recently retired and have gotten back into modeling. Trying to catch up with new techniques in modeling I have done a lot of online reading and RUclips videos. I have to admit I fell into the rivet counter mode of modeling. It just took a lot of the fun out of building models for me. I love the old Revell and Monogram kits and have acquired some online for a lot less than the new high-tech models. Nothing against the modelers who want the perfect builds it's their passion and they should go for it I've seen some beautiful work on RUclips. I just completed an old Pyro Nantucket lightship model I found on-line and I had a ball building it. Right now I'm working on an old Testors P 51 Mustang. I feel like a kid again when I'm building.
I'm glad you are finding your joy in building. Everyone takes their own path. I just found that sometimes the folks that get too wrapped up in counting rivets do so at the sacrifice of actually building a decent model. It can be frustrating too, if it prevents you from actually finishing anything. It's a hobby, after all, and supposed to be fun and relaxing. But like you said, nothing against any approach that the modeler wants to take. Thanks for taking the time to provide some very thoughtful feedback and good luck on that Mustang!

The "dirt and oil wash" techniques are the "real life" version of what Ambient Occlusions do in digital 3D modeling platforms. I love watching these videos. I don't have time to build model kits anymore so watching these give me that "fix." :-)

@@TheeYellowDart Yep....that's a good comparison. I bit different but to me, it helps bring out some of the details that tend to get lost when you button it all up inside the fuse.

I recently finished the Hasegawa 1:48 F-4J which came-out around 1980, had an absolute blast detailing the cockpit & wheel bays etc, not just that, but all the 'hard work' resulted in a class-win at our National show here.
Would love to see some more 'classic' kits get the treatment. Well modelled, sir.

I agree with your opening statement. I recall there was this one blog I found online where some guy “reviewed” kits but just complained about each and every kit he wrote about, sometimes for the most trivial issues, and would discourage people from buying them. I found it hard to find any positive commentary on anything I liked! It was very annoying. He even went as as far to criticize modern kits that almost anyone else would love.
We need less people like that and more people like you. Great build!

Beautiful job! Totally agree that it seems modelers tend to get hung up on it being perfect. I build mainly older kits due to affordability but also, now that I am in my 50s, I like to build many of the kits I made as a kid. Once in a while I get a real stinker but for the most part I enjoy building the old Revell, Monogram, AMT, and Airfix kits. They sometimes need more work but it's also an opportunity to improve my skills. At the end of the day I think most of us build them for ourselves. Thanks again!

As a person that is not as accomplished as you these older kits with raised panel lines and poor fit make it very difficult to have a nice final out come. The reason I'm always on RUclips is to watch builders like yourself to improve my skill and learn how you tackle certain issues.
Its a joy to watch you and others produce such amazing work with older not so good kits. This intruder just looks so nice to my eye.
I guess some modelers like me...or maybe just me...pay a little more for newer kits that are advanced in engineering in the hopes that the fit and finish is equal to their price. Seems like the only way I can get a decent finished product...but when you pay a premium and still get a model with issues its disappointing.

Completely understand, Ed. It is certainly hard to beat a well engineered Tamiya kit and something like their 1/48 P-51 and Corsair make great kits as far as ability to get a good result without having to deal with many fit issues. While this EA-6A was very good, the older engineering obviously isn't the same as current Tamiya level. I wanted to make this video to hopefully show people that they don't have to be scared of older kits and that ones like this, actually have pretty good overall fit and finish. But I totally get it that sometimes paying a little more to get an easier build may be the way to go. I'm just thankful that we have so many options to chose from. Cheers!

I've just started again...after about a 45 year absence and yes, the world has changed ENORMOUSLY compared to what I remember.
I've bought a heap of 2nd hand models and currently working on a 1988 built Testors Bronco. Nothing like todays models, but, still a good way to spend few hours.

Revell originally had you install the gear reversed, just for any who might build the kit. Lovely job on this one!

I have had this 4578 kit new since 1988 and started on it in December 2019. I am just now installing the landing gear. I got "caught-up" with "authenticity"! My kit did not include the fuel intake and your package does not show it, either. The instruction sheet shows it on the left fuselage. I had to make mine. I have the "scoop" you needed and did not use mine. My decals were old and many split when applied. I did get them done = tricky. Instructions for positioning the main gear supports struts 68 & 69 are not clear - I needed your help, so thanks for the close-up of yours. Radome Tan - most brands seem too dark and you made a custom mix. I went with Mission Models MMP-070. Your build looks simply beautiful. Thanks for sharing.

Brilliant idea about taping over the raised panel lines before sanding the seams. Never even occurred to me to do that!
Works pretty good most of the time. Still have to be careful but it does the job! Thanks for the feedback.
Thise old revell kits were my childhood, I've been trawling ebay and facebook groups to buy them up.
They are great kits and make for really fun (and often cheap) builds. Hope you can find all the ones you want/need.

Sorry Chad for being late to show my appreciation comment on your video, I really enjoyed your video and I always enjoy your buildings, you’re a very skilled modeler, and about the criticism you got, I hope the critics think about, the time you are using and the knowledge you are sharing with us, before being critical, anyway it’s up to oneself to use your methods and learn from it, which are valuable imo, or they only can enjoy the video, to me this hobby is about my passion for planes from WWII, I used to glue the parts together, when I started back in early 70’s, now-days things are different a lot of accessories compared to that time, but I only keep one thing in my mind, is to enjoy the time, when I build and assemble the kit. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and your build with us, keep on the good work Chad, and I’m looking forward to watching your next video 👍🇩🇰
Glad you finally got to enjoy the video and I appreciate the thoughtful input and you taking the time to make it. To be clear, I didn't get any negative feedback on the video or techniques, it was more about the P-51 kit. That made me think about how we as a community get to the point where we are critical of products that are actually quite good compared to those we had in the past. I guess it's human nature and it's probably somewhat logical and to be expected as technology increases. I sure wouldn't want to back to dial-up internet so I get the point that we should push manufacturers to be better where better is needed. I only wondered if some of the joy we had of building is getting lost in our push for "perfection". I wondered how many modelers didn't finish things like the used to due to that pursuit. Like you stated so well, the real joy should be in the time spent and the lessons learned. The whole "it's about the journey" thing. Thank you again and take care!
Spectacular! The Monogram 1/48 jets of that era may not have the fancy molding tech and recessed panel lines of more modern kits, but they are/were excellent in shape and proportions and provided excellent detail in cockpits and landing gear bays. You did this kit justice. Well done!
Thank you for the feedback! You are a 100% correct with regards to those Monogram/Revell jets. The are fun builds even though they may not have all the modern bells and whistles.

The "trick" I used for panel lines for those kits was to completely sand them off (possibly filling the few recessed ones if appropriate;), fully or partly paint the model, apply a flat coat, and use HB or harder mechanical pencil lead to lay out the lines as well as mask panels off and use lighter or darker shades along the edges. Recently returned to building aircraft again and trying to learn the current techniques, for which I find your channel extremely helpful!!
When i first started this hobby, i was very excited to build the model and the older i got, the more i became a perfectionist where eveything had to be perfect. And just about all of my knowledge came from years of trial, error, and expensive mistakes. This is a great how to video for other modelers who may be starting out in this hobby and a reminder for all to have fun with the hobby. Excellent detail in the video and the Intruder!
Thank you for the feedback. I wanted to make this particular video to encourage folks to try some of the older models and just to have fun without getting too hung up about how everything has to be perfect. I wanted to show with just a few simple techniques, that modelers could achieve some half way decent results. Trial and error are all part of the improvement process. I built that model back in the mid 70’s, for me, back then, it was the pristine look of a brand new model. Now I’m starting to build models again and can see what a real in service model should look like, and next month…. I’m getting an air brush. Thanks for the Awsome Videos

The premise of this video is excellent. I am a rivet counter and every so often I will build out of the box. Its refreshing to just produce a completed product unencumbered by detail that often only I know is there.
I hear you, Carl. Sometimes it's easy to get caught up in the all the rivets that we can easily lose the joy the modeling. Every once in a while, we have to go back and build like we did when we were young and didn't know how to count that many rivets :) Appreciate the feedback!
@@FlyingSModels Your welcome. You have a great channel going and I like your take on modeling. Modeling is like Harleys and Ar-15 rifles, you can spend alot of money and turn a $50 model into a $150 model. This reflects purchase power and discerning taste, not so much skill. As an avid armor and figure modeler, I have noted that about 1/4 to 1/2 of many detail sets really do not improve on the kit parts. One is better to spend their money on accessory pieces and materials. This will place the hobby back in the financial and ambitious reach of more modelers, especially young ones.

Phenomenal. The cockpit finish alone 7:04 is stunning. And then everything else matched it in detail. 1/48 are the best.

My father served in the squadron this kit represents. I am nearly complete building a 1/72 EA-6B from haysagawa. It to was an older kit (80s time frame I think). The scale is smaller than I am used to and the kit itself was not great. I had to make a few adjustments. But the size and “fiddliness” of the model has challenged me to improve my current skills and try out some new things. Love you video. You haven’t seen and 1/48 scale EA-6Bs out there have you. 🙏🏼
Hey Michael, I think that there are plenty of EA-6B's out there if you look at online shops or eBay. Monogram makes a nice older kit that's equivalent to this EA-6A. Kinetic makes a newer version with many more options an lots more parts. Good luck and have fun with it in 1/48!
A great build. My dad flew these until 1979, and I bought this very kit so I could build one like his. I’ll never be able to do anything like yours, so maybe I should just give up!

Thanks for the encouragement. And you’re right, it’ll get built. I build cars, so this is way out of my wheelhouse. First thing I know I’ll need is an airbrush, because I can’t imagine getting those effects with rattle cans and washes. But I heard you refer to a painting tutorial you made, and I look forward to watching that, as well as your other build vids.
You won't regret picking up an airbrush. It's one of those foundational tools. I'm not sure which video I may have referred to but there are a few that I have up on different painting/weathering techniques. I don't have one solely dedicated to airbrushing. Maybe that would be helpful to some??
Hi David, I saw a comment on the "Weathering with Oils" video but for some reason, couldn't find it when I went to respond. But just to answer, the Tamiya and AK Real Colors I use are Lacquer based acrylics and the white spirits has not ill effects on them. Try a practice piece with your paints first, though. Wow! I am really blown away with the detail you go to in the cockpit! I will also try your technique of weathering (laying down the spirits first, then building up the dark and adding spots of white). It ends up with a beaut finish and is very realistic. Thanks once again.

I just saw this and am mightily impressed. Excellent job with this Monogram vet. I fully concur that these old kits are diamonds in the rough and can be built into very respectable models, as you so skillfully demonstrate. The big advantage with the Monogram kits is they really had an eye for form and shape. I can't think of too many that don't capture the lines of the aircraft really well, even better than a lot of the current, over-priced affairs. My major jam is to take a Monogram kit and pimp it up to modern standards. An F-15A I did took best of show that way. Not bragging, just an example of the potential of these things. Lots of satisfaction too.
Really appreciate the great feedback. As you can see from the video, I couldn't agree with you more. And there's just something about taking one of the old classics and turning it into a masterpiece. Not that the A-6 is one like your F-15A. I've been wanting to do that with the old Monogram F-15 too and really go all out on it. So many models, so little time. I've built all three 1/48 A6 family of kits from Revellogram and thoroughly enjoyed each. Great shape for their age, decent detail and they are surprisingly large models.
Honestly, I feel like building another vintage A6 now!

Building an old 1/32 FW 190 kit from Revell right now. It has SERIOUS fitting issues, and it makes it very challenging to keep going when I am fighting the urge to toss it in the trash.
I hear you. Some of those old kits are more frustration that enjoyment. Try to resist the toss.
Loved building those kits when I was a kid as well as now - prior to all these high end kits - these were just as nice and completed into great models . Thanks for sharing and showing that these older kits are still worthy to build.

I think you really hit the nail on the head with the loss of innocents bit. Building models now is a lot different. Compared to when I was a kid building toys to play with or explode.
Those were the days, weren't they. Play with em for a while then stuff em with firecrackers. Or put some testors glue on them, light it up, and send it flying across the sky. Appreciate the comments.
I am building the A-6E, EA-6A and EA-6B. All are very nice kits (Other than the inaccuracies with the Prowler. I do plan to try the Kenetic Prowler.) My only issue with the kits are the way Revell tackled the seats. The seats from Monogram's F-14A or F-8 are fantastic and I wish I could drop them into the Intruder. The rest of the cockpit is as nice as plastic can be molded and the instrument panel is really a treat to paint! (Also the Monogram twin and four engine bombers from the late 70's/early 80's are some of my favorite interiors to detail with the B-29 cockpit at the top of the list!)
Excellent. I hope to be able to see the results. The are nice kits for sure and I'm with you, love those 70's and 80's bombers. That B-29 is fantastic!! I thought the seats in the A-6 were a bit fiddly but looked decent enough after some detail painting. Happy Modeling!
Great build as always. I cant believe someone complained about the airfix p-51 . The p-51 is a fun kit to build and you did an excellent job building it. I am an older modeler myself and I love these old kits from my youth. Then again I am in a slog fest with the 1/32 a-6a in another three months I might have that one built . Ugh. Sometimes I just need a break with something simpler.

A fabulous build and I thoroughly enjoyed the video. I've commented before on one of your models - the little Airfix Spitfire. You have a style all of your own which I really like. As for older kits, I couldn't agree more. I'm a bit long in the tooth myself, and these days I prefer slightly less advanced, 'nostalgia' builds as I'm not a fan of etched brass or replacing everything with resin aftermarket bits. I certainly don't worry about minor accuracy issues. There are some great new state of the art kits out there, of course, which I'm happy to build if the subject appeals, but I reckon I get more fun, and certainly less stress, doing the older ones and even ancient 'vintage classics'. Anyway, your Intruder looks wonderful, so a big thumbs up from me.

You and I seem to share a common approach to modeling and for me, that approach keeps things stress free. I built this kit a few years ago and had pretty much the identical experience , not the bad Revell fitment, add some rivet to the fuselage, wash and weathering

i love how heavy you go on contrast similar to what people do with miniature painting for the cockpit and wheel bay, i think fully replicating the colors to the real plane results in a dull result with little visibility on the details. having pushed the contrast up even tho not realistic somehow makes it more realistic at a small scale, i also try bumping up the contrast the smaller the detail is to bring up those details and i dont see many modelers doing this

I think a lot of modelers today, expect everything to fit flawlessly, with no effort. Considering the price of new kits, you can almost see their point. Almost. I have yet to see ANY kit, that didn`t take a bit of extra effort somewhere.
I started building in the early 70`s, and flash, ejector pins marks, warped parts, you name it, was just the way it was. I guess that`s why very little fazes me today. You HAD to learn to deal with and overcome those problems.
Again, excellent job and content.
Would seem that we grew up in the same time building the same kits. Like everyone else, I can really appreciate a well engineered and well manufactured kit. Like you said, I just don't get to phased by those kits that do require some extra work. A little more painful when you spent a boat load on a high end kit, I get it. But I've spent a boat load on some limited run stuff that fit horribly. All of it goes to make us better modelers :)

That’s a beauty. Really looks good! I tend to buy older kits as, sometimes, they are more affordable. While they need a lot more work on occasion, that’s just model making really. Anyhoo, very nice result old chap.....looks like an EA6A to me! 👍🏻👌🏻👍🏻
You and I are in the same camp. I just buy models based on the subject and put in whatever work is needed to make it the way I want to. And I don't stop to count the rivets or measure the depth of the panel lines along the way. Not saying accuracy aint important, but art and having fun have their place just as well.

Great video, expert work and a spot on topic. Too many "modelers" truly only want out of the box perfection and the ability to churn out a kit or more per week. It's almost as if they're in a race to see who can assemble the most kits the fastest and they whine if even the slightest bit of real modeling is required. Dave

This build is the embodiment of the reasoning behind my approach to model - making (as we have discussed and discovered). The opening minute says it all. There's nothing I can say to add to our conversations because you showcase the approach and attitude I share with you. That said, this build is a stunningly beautiful aircraft model. I laughed when I saw you apply the putty, because I use the same technique! Please continue to accept my adulation and the extremely high opinion I have of you and that shared by my harem! Please keep it coming to us... showing a new generation that are learning to seek nothing less than kit perfection, complaining about fit issues and Marque accuracy to the last rivet, that it's great to aspire to perfection, but it is an elusive, non - existing commodity in the human condition and the model world, yet something to aim at. As always, my kindest, warmest regards and all my encouragement goes your way... needless to say, there are three other highly enamoured souls with their heads over my shoulder ogling your every word with each post... :)
Thank you, Christian and truer words have not been spoken. I guess I failed to talk about the idea of "pursuit of perfection" in the video. As you say, it's not that we shouldn't always strive for perfection (whatever that means in this hobby as to me it's more akin to art...hard to say what the perfect piece of art is), it's that we don't let perfection become the enemy of "good enough". I know that when I get overly critical with my builds, I tend to get frustrated and disillusioned and then this leads inevitably to a lack of modeling which leads to more frustration. Worse case, just make the model a 3 footer and don't let anyone (or yourself) view it from any closer. Then, take stock in the positives and the "needs improvements" and start that next one with a new goal. As always, appreciate the positive feedback and the audience at your place that it comes from :)

PAR EXCELLENCE. We have all just watched the magic and love involved in a build! I've just built the more advanced Hobbyboss version of the A6, and though in many ways the engineering is superior, it's actually overcomplicated, creating panel alignment problems where there shouldn't be any, and the less said about the tiny and very brittle wing hinge the better. Mounting the wings in the upward position is precarious and makes for a model you can't really pick up and look at - which for me takes some of the joy out of it.
What you demonstrate here is that with proper technique you can obtain the same visual impact from a massively inferior kit if you're not so bothered about the bells and whistles. For all that the Hobbyboss kit has a more detailed interior, you show that, with the right techniques, this need not be an issue. With this being a cheaper kit, one is more inclined to experiment. I get very cautious about working on expensive kits as mistakes can ruin them where as cheaper kits makes you more inclined to take risks. Crucially, however, you show that you don't have to have a big budget to get professional results just as a master guitar player can get a tune out of a Walmart guitar. The point is made well.
Side by side there is absolutely nothing at all wrong with this Revell A6 save for the raised panel lines. You even demonstrate that the plastic landing gear can be made to look every bit as good as the Hobbyboss metal gear. I would say, though that you make the final result look slightly cartoonish, but then that will happen as a technique demonstrator. Not everything needs to be accentuated. I find with weathering that less is more, but having watched this I have ordered a set of oil paints and will have a play. I might even buy this kit!
I don't really understand the snobbery about Revogram kits. They are a bit basic but that just means you get to the fun painting stages faster and skip a lot of largely pointless interior detail that will never be seen again. The Revell B17 is a notoriously awful kit but if you're prepared to put the work in it scrubs up into a very nice aeroplane. I can say the same for their C47 Spooky and the B26 Marauder. The only truly bad one I've encountered is the F- 105D Thunderchief. I wouldn't mind seeing what you make of that being that it is so terrible. Then at the other end of the spectrum for clunky bug Revells is the Lockheed Ventura in 1:48 which to my mind is an absolutely superb kit, under-priced and underrated. There is simply no need to spend megabucks to have a nice collection of well done models.
Very thoughtful comments and I appreciate those. You are exactly right too. I'm definitely not saying that newer releases should not be build. I'm grateful for them. But just because it's an older model, doesn't mean that it can't be a very worthwhile and enjoyable modeling experience and that a good/acceptable result is impossible to achieve. Hey David, thanks for the good feedback. With regards to the sanding pads, I actually got these for free as a promo with my Model Aircraft Mag subscription. So I’m guessing they are from the UK. I did put a link to some similar ones on Amazon in the video description (or at least I thought I did). I’ll see if I can remember the name of the pads or check them out tomorrow and see if there’s any markings on them to help identify the brand.

For sure. I think sometimes the newer kits get too much attention and we sometimes forgot about the oldies but goodies and how building some of them can be fun, inexpensive, and a good way to develop skills.

Very nice result! As someone who builds Sci-fi I am faced with a crap shoot as far as quality goes. At the moment I am dealing with the 1/350 Moebius Seaview and companion flying sub, as these kits go not bad however, not as nice as that Intruder!
Thank you! I've never built Sci-Fi so I'm unfamiliar with kits and quality. But I can imagine, given what is likely a more limited audience than air or armor that the quality can be questionable. What doesn't kill us makes us stronger, right :)
