I’m someone who has worked in mental heath services for many years. I have a lot of ideas about what helps people and I’ve certainly seen some things that don’t. But the fact is, we all make mistakes and some of us are more insulated from the effects than others. My parents achieved what neither set of their parents did - to be kind, to be constant, to manage money in ways that decreased stress - so, I was lucky. I don’t think it is possible to finally decide who or what is to blame for homelessness, migration, addictions, mental suffering… it will always be a mixture of individual biology, choices and consequences, self perception, traumatic experiences and abuse, social isolation, social deprivation and inequality. As you say Sandy, we need to think critically - and that means knowing that there is always another side to every story, not accepting the first explanation we find, especially not ones that might happen to suit us. People on the left always emphasise social causes, people on the right always emphasise individual agency. They’re both right and both wrong… their arguments are more like a role play than anything else.

Interesting points there Sandy. I work in a secondary school and those things like critical thinking life lessons are taught. Every Wednesday we all tutor groups have an hour session called AF, or Aspiring Futures to give it it's full name, to teach them 'lessons in life,' but a lot of the kids just don't listen and are quite out of control. Not all of them I might add. There's always a few 'rotten apples that spoil the barrel' if you know what I mean in near enough every class. Teachers hands are tied.

I have seen camps of which you speak over the years and it definitely makes you think about your own life and have compassion for others. No matter how someone ends up in that situation, they are human beings and one hopes the best for them. No one knows what their own future may be so being kind and compassionate towards others may come around in ways we can't imagine. Thank you Sandy, we know you meant the best in talking on this topic. All the best, Travis.

I didn’t see the original video as I was away, but based on watching your videos for many years, you always come across as having well balanced views and as a well grounded individual. Completely agree! I've been on both sides of the mental health fence and as a service user, when you can get the care, it's outstanding and among the best in the world. Problem is that politicians use it to kick, starve and meddle with, like everything else, so everyday folks and communities are left with the outfall. Then it's a vicious cycle as communities appeal to politicians for changes, and it's the usual move the deckchairs around on the saloon deck as the whole ship goes down. An entire top-to-bottom reform is needed for the system we live in as this one doesn't work.

Glad you posted this Sandy. I was half way through watching yesterday’s post last night when I fell asleep. Tried to find it again this morning to finish watching, but it had vanished. I spent literally hours searching for it and was beginning to doubt my own sanity - except that my wife had also seen me watching it, so I knew it had been real…. I guessed that you had to take it down for whatever reason, but of course that prompted speculation as to what you had actually found. Good to know that the chap is ok (or at least as ok as can be expected in the circumstances).
Like most of your genuine subscribers, I was well aware that your reasons for posting the original video were entirely benevolent and prompted solely by concern for the chap involved. In no way did I construe it in any way as malicious or uncaring. Unfortunately, any posts of this nature these days give opinionated bigots an excuse to try to force their opinions on others. Makes me wonder what the world is coming to….

I kept a much cleaner camp than most people, but yes it’s different and a lot of people will judge it wrongly. Mostly I got injured with an ax had to leave my camp and when I came back in all bandaged up and all someone had trashed my camp
You were right to check to see if they were still around because something could happen to them and no one would know until they found the corpse .

I didn't see the first video. But i agree with what you say. Addiction is a terrible thing. Appears for many reasons family upbringing is a big cause of it in my opinion. A lot of young people are brought up in an environment where parents have issues and then this rubs off on the children. We can all say stiff upper lip you just have to get on with it but not everyone is strong minded. You hit the nail on the head with East enders!! I've been saying that 25 years. I think you nailed it when you talked about the people who govern us. Politics affects almost every aspect of our lives really, but it doesn't generally attract the nation's best and brightest people, and so most of those bright people end up working in the private sector instead.
At election time, most of us end up having to vote for whoever we perceive is the lesser of two evils, the pool of talent is so bad.
We legalised political corruption in this country and called it 'Lobbying', and I don't think things can really get better until we remedy that.

Greed and corruptption. Something our government is very good at. It was cheaper to turn people out on the streets than reform and properly finance mental healthcare. The land was sold cheap to politicians friends / bribers for other uses.
I knew someone who was failed by the CCA. He had spent most of his life up to that time in care. He was taught how to draw his signature, which then made him eligible to be thrown out / released from care. His family were told he had been 'released' into the community when they came to visit him a few days later At that point he had vanished. This was a man who had no concept of money, who couldn't read or dress himself, never mind make food.
He spent many hard years before he was able to get into sheltered housing.
The facility was closed down and the land sold for housing.

Hard subject to breach and even more so with political correctness today. Many are only a few pay cheques away from being in the same situation too. As a kid in the care system, I was always on the run and made straight for woodland, whereas others from the same place ended up heading for London and I won't say what they had to do to survive. The suffering during these times are what introduced me to bushcraft and survival. As I did as a kid, I left no trace, so I couldn't be tracked and found by the uniforms...keeping a very low profile and freezing my Niagra's off, cold, wet or damp, shivering violently and a body full of cramp. No knowledge then of wild shelter building. Even today it would be a real struggle, but at least I learned and gained a bit of knowledge. Glad the chap is safe at least. Who was walking who Sandy? Hi Sandy. I did see that the original video was removed before I could watch it so do not know the content. Having watched you for some time now I am sure that genuine concern was the point of it. I made a comment after watching a video in America where masses of junk/vehicles etc were abandoned in a desert region. I immediately received replies regarding the homelessness over there. I have just watched two bikers at the edge of the Artic Ocean and they pointed out a large open landfill site there. If that sort of thing continues to grow in the way it has in my lifetime (73 now) there will not be a world as we have known it for future generations to live in. Everybody shares the responsibility to try their best to prevent ruining the areas that we live in.

The mega wealthy idiots keeping the class system alive which we call the sponging monarchy, with their 23 properties, all which sit heated all winter long. Then we MUST have the cash to end homelessness once and for all. 1 in 4 of us will experience a mental health problem in any given year. The cost of living crisis, wars and general state of the world is only making it harder to look after our mental health. Just my thoughts and opinions.... cheers Sandy, be well mate.

Hi there, Sandy. 😊 That's actually very sad. And you don't know whether the guy can regain the ability to take care of things, as and when they've improved. Some homeless people get into this trap, because even though it's so miserable, yet so simple having a life like this.
By the way, speaking of mental health and all. I've been following Austin, AKA Scudo Camper and West Country Vlogs gentleman, and seen you appear in some of his older vids. Wondering if you still keep in touch?
Thing is, I've been interacting with Aust for quite a while, and it turns out he's been dealing with such issues for years. And even though from time to time you see videos where he's out with other campers, it has transpired he's got no friends and nobody really to talk to. Austin is a very empathetic gentleman and then 20 something years ago his good friend passed away all of a sudden the next day after they had a time together. That left him struck and anxious about any other interactions. He lapsed into depression he's been struggling with on and off. All the other friends he used to have had gradually stopped interacting with him, because he was unavailable at that time to anyone, or moved to a different place, or went on to money making and just wouldn't reply whenever he tried to reach out. Then as Aust started posting videos, he got to know other RUclipsrs, but they would be gone too, once they got a ton of subscribers.
That's why he keeps chatting to the camera, because it won't respond with anything negative or overwhelming to him.
To me Austin comes across as an incredibly kind, caring, down-to-earth yet at the same time spiritual gentleman. I hate to see him being in this state. And watching the older videos, I can't help but say you make for an amazing company together. Knowing the state Austin is in, and from what I've gathered from our interaction, I'd think he might feel too timid to reach out.
I'm thinking if you haven't totally lost touch with him, maybe it's worth reaching out? Not sure you'd have to tell him you've come from my comment though, maybe I'm just complicating things, but I'm guessing a simple reminder of yourself and genuine care by your own agency is the thing I would have gone for.
For any case, Austin's contacts are quite scattered, but all possible to get from his own RUclips channels, FB pages and groups he's the admin of. He seems to be available mostly on WhatsApp, Instagram and Gmail though.
I understand you may have no time for that, and perhaps Austin will see this video along with my comment. Still I thought I'd rather let you and everyone else who truly cares know.
Hoping you're keeping well and safe. Greetings from Minsk, Belarus! Cheers!
    Mike

      Hi Mike,
I was hoping Austin and myself would get together for some motorcycle vlogs at some point not sure when though, but that door is always open and Austin is aware of that.
I believe he does have some friends and is not entirely without human interaction as I believe he is married and he has that most wonderful creature in his life...A dog :).
Life can be hard for all of us at times and currently I'm dealing with a sick wife and well we all have are plates full.
The best help anyone can have is self help, helping some people can just drag you down (I don't think this is the case with Austin though as you say he is an empathetic person).
It's easy to say self help is the best help but we don't get to that realisation without a good deal of struggle. Some simply never get there sadly, and some just trudge through life carrying a lot of gloom.
One of the things I try and do in my videos is to spread a little salt and light, lift peoples spirits when I can and try and present a positive outlook, so hopefully this will influence them to look on things differently, that is the best I can do really.
I have come to understand just how easily we can be influenced for good and bad. It's quite simple.
You've heard the saying no doubt "You are what you eat" but you are also "What you watch".
If you stare into the abyss the abyss will stare into you!
That's why I only allow myself to watch positive wholesome things on line, associate with positive folk as much as possible and most of all be kind to and love myself because if you can't love yourself how can you love or help another...
However I will reach out to Austin even if just to say hello:)

@@WiltshireMan Oh dear, crying shame about your wife's welbeing, that must have been quite tough for you both and your extended family. I'm rather new to your channels, so didn't know about that.
You are totally right about Austin having his wife, dog and some friends. On the surface, I initially did think the same. What I know now is a bit different though. Last year spring another RUclips guy, Zummerzet Woodsman, called on to him, and it made such a huge difference.
And another petty thing you may have not been aware of is that through RUclips's change in its algorithms, now to keep updated on any channel, you have to press the bell icon that stands for notification settings, and change them from personalised to all. Otherwise RUclips algorithm will keep try to predict which videos you may be interested in, and often it doesn't quite manage to guess your preferences. That means Austin has been posting videos, although on a rarer basis, but you might not have been notified of what's been going on on his Scudo Camper, Not Just Camping channel.
Anyway, what I can do is let you know once or twice, at its most share with you Austin's contacts privately, all publicly available, but scattered all over the place. Then it's up to you what you're going to do with this information. I've done my part in this respect otherwise.
And yes, cheer you up! please do feel free to reach out if you ever need somebody around.
Kindest regards to you and your wife,
      Mike

I find myself agreeing with much you have said. If you get a chance read what Aristotle says about politics, you'll realise we live in an 'Oligarchy' in which nobody can gain 'power' without either first being wealthy or having a financial backer. The wealthy will want what is best for the wealthy, the financial backer will lobby for the same thing. It no longer matters which party you look at. Starmer has a backer, Sunak was wealthy, Johnson had a backer, Truss had 'think tanks' backing her, no idea who funds them, Farage has Tice and Banks. Harris, Biden, Trump in the US. The ordinary citizen cannot gain power without money from somewhere and we make that money through our labours. Grifters, liars and con-artists all of them.

Very deep problem which of course can happen at any time to any of us. Drugs are not going to help that at anytime. Should we be concerned at people that turn to them and stay on them. In my case I think not a simple explanation to that is like cooking where if you cannot get it together to get the ingredients for a cake and bake it, you can hardly expect to eat it. For all the excuses that are made the very bottom line is your on your own and your destiny is in no one's hands but theirs. We all expect help at some point if needed but that shouldn't turn into a way of life and sadly for many it has and so has the backhanded greed of misplaced expectations that goes with it.Take the expected used and abused welfare state out of this for their livelihood and their own foresight and self respect and where would they be?

I don’t think you understand depression and mental health issues properly. Trying to apply rules and conditions to some people with mental health is pointless, their brain unfortunately doesn’t work that way a lot or all of the time and combined with other factors like alcohol or drugs it’s pointless thinking they will behave normally.

    • @robvannNS
      @robvannNS Месяц назад

@@SnowyAspenHills None of us know the condition of this young man nor the extent of his mental challenges. What you are suggesting is just to ignore this. There are millions of people who are now homeless for all sorts of reasons in the US and UK. I'm not assigning blame but ignoring this is not a solution. I just watched a video by Peter Santenello (also the name of his channel) on Burlington Vermont. It's a small university town of about 45k people. It used to be a wonderful place and considered the ideal small town to live in. I suspect this is typical of what towns are facing now. A modern day tragedy.

People who study brain development say that at certain ages, you can learn certain things and not other things. Critical thinking is a more advanced stage that a child under 7 may not be able to grasp fully. that comes with time. I understand where you are coming from though. Stable family life is extremely important in bringing up a child. I volunteer with inmates who are in jail, in large part, because their early family life was pure chaos.
