I already listened to this on pod but just popping in to mention that when the thumbnail started auto playing the captions said “I’m Sean Fantasy” and now I think that’s what Sean should call himself
While I enjoyed our group's discussion, I find the emphasis on box office performance tiresome and largely irrelevant to whether a film is good or if you enjoyed it. This trend seems to be becoming normalized in film and other entertainment channels. Some of the best works of art, including my favorite films, music, games, and books, weren't huge financial successes. However, this never diminished my personal enjoyment or fan appreciation. Instead of focusing on the craft and how something makes us feel, we've turned a generation of filmgoers and entertainment lovers into accountants and financial analysts. What a sad state of affairs.
Joanna asking Sean if he softened his opinion on the movie because the box office sucked is why she is the best of the best for these shows. witness me, joanna
I think Furiosa's arch isn't complete in this film because it's fully realized in Fury Road. She gets so caught up in revenge for the subjugation she faced under Dementus that she fails to escape to the Green Place. He then tells her to make it Epic. She then realizes she can save all of the breeder wives instead of just herself but by the time she is able to accomplish that the Green Place has fallen. There is no escape from this world into this 'perfect land' but she has to return and fix what they have. Fury Road is so easily slotted in as Chapter 6 of this movie that they should almost be considered one. Mad Max & Furiosa: The Whole Bloody Mess
Respectfully, there’s no way Sean would outlast Amanda in the Wasteland. Amanda’s indomitable will to live (identified by Sean himself in the April 5, 2024 meltdown incident) ensures she will continue to barter her way into a comfortable lifestyle long after Sean has given up. So glad we have video now, so much fun to watch these conversations.
I question if Sean has ever seen a peach before. I can’t believe no one called him out for this glaringly obvious peach. Peaches can range from red to yellow with all sorts of hues in between. The pit she carries for the whole movie is the exact same pit she picks from the tree in the first few minutes. Goes into her pouch>baddies take her pouch in the tent, start eating>mother takes pit from baddies>mother give it to Furiosa. Bottom line: pit is from a peach, not an apple (maybe a nectarine).
Just an FYI on the off-screen death of Scrouts (17:00) - there's a Mad Max video game from 2015 that's sort of a semi-tie in with Fury Road. And as it happens, Scrotus is the main villain of that game. Heard about it recently on some other podcast. I never played the game and had all but forgotten about it, but apparently that's where that character's fate is fleshed out (which also points to this Fury Road extended universe being a thing that George Miller had in his head for years).
Weird take to say the "prequel to the prequel." The movie is literally called Furiosa. Why would it not cover the most important events in her childhood? Also just wild to say the nose is so distracting. The nose is literally so well done its entirely not noticeable! Even when light shines through it it still looks real.
I agree. Neither of those things were problematic in anyway. I don’t believe Chris actually picked up “air leaving the room” from the audience realizing they were going to be with the child furiosa for an extended period. The movie is fully absorbing from the jump. And the nose was perfect. It’s like they were straining to find things to complain about. Weird.
Chris is right, ‘Road Warrior’ is better than ‘Fury Road’. The soundtrack is better. It has Mel Gibson who is better than Tom Hardy. It’s best 30 minutes are it’s last 30 minutes, whereas ‘Fury Road’s best 30 minutes are its first 30 minutes.
I felt like this movie is for the people who complained that there is not enough story in Fury Road, and all the things implied in that film is explained or showed more of in Furiosa, which I've spent a lot of time explaining to those people. So I was like yeah I know that and I understood that in Fury Road. With the Citadel, the Bullet Farm and the Green Place, and the wives. It's what bothers me with prequels in general. I wasn't that interested. Anya and the action set peices saved the film for me. It would have been better with more of Dementus and his story but set after Fury Road, with new things in place. Maybe more of the wars between the three houses.
When you had Joanna on the Big Picture Wonka Podcast, within the same hour she moaned about how Augustus Gloop was a 'Fatphobic' character, but then went on to mention Timothée Chalamet's 'skinny legs' numerous times. Every time she comments on appearance I always remember that podcast.
I think the issue with Anya as Furiosa is her physical presence. She cannot embody the character's physicality like Charlize did. I would've asked her to gain lbs for the character because it was hard to buy that she was powerful being so skinny. Charlize was very believable as a badass just from her physique alone. Anya did great with the face acting which is critical for the role but i found her arms too thin to carry the weight - literally.
So you’re worried about ticket sales and the state of cinema but dedicate over an hour to nitpick one of the best films of the year? Maybe use your reach to celebrate and contribute something positive. I don’t mind criticism, that’s why I love the show, but maybe get guests with different opinions? Furiosa is not Fury Road but continues to be compared to it. Yes the end credit montage was a terrible choice but everything before that was masterfully done and one of Miller’s best directorial efforts.

All they do at the Ringer is complain about the MCU and the “MCU-ification of movies” and yet they’re complaining that they “already know what’s gonna happen.” So basically they need to know there’s a next installment (like the MCU franchise) before they can enjoy the actual movie they’re watching. Instead of just appreciating a film for the path it takes. As usual, genuinely pathetic film criticism 💀

Not sure if this has been mentioned but I believe Scrotus meets his end in the Mad Max video game that was actually a tie-in to Fury Road!
