I wasn’t expecting a new episode so soon it startled me lol
I really enjoyed "Evil Does Not Exist" until the ending. I saw it twice, and I wonder if there is more than one version/release of it. Because I read a critic's review that broke down the ending in a different sequential order than what I saw. I watched it a 2nd time, specifically to make sure I remembered the order correctly, and it was the same; even seeing it at two different locations. The ending the critic wrote about worked much better, but I have to think either he saw a different cut/edit, or he remembered the order of events incorrectly.
Agreed with Sean on “Evil Does Not Exist”. Such an interesting film on many levels that I can’t stop thinking about. Wish it got a bit more traction after Venice.

My pick for best movie of the year is The Last Stop in Yuma County. 90 minute thriller set in a gas station diner in 70s Arizona. Fantastic film
@@atatur123 meh I felt it was too predictable and tropey. Especially how well it starts off, it really takes a turn about halfway through where suddenly you know exactly what movie you're getting and all the intrigue gets sucked out of it in a heartbeat. Some great character archetypes in there, but not enough is done with them that we haven't already seen a hundred times before.
Love Chris!!! Great energy! And it is cool to see what Adam looks like. He is amazing. I could listen to him all day.
Have been watching Adam Nayman's video essays (which i love) and this is my first time seeing him. Dude is awesome!
Such a great episode! Almost wish Amanda was given the chance to tell Charles that Jo had already taken ‘Fall Guy’ but LOL at his switch-up. Everyone seemed to have such a fun time, translated really well on video. Can’t wait for the end of year recap!

When listening to one of these types of Ringer Podcasts, I often miss the mention of a title (or an actor, etc) and then have to try to re-find the mention (if I can't immediately stop and rewind). I've wished that they were more intentional about stating names like this. I missed the name of the Kurosawa 45 minute horror film and rewound the discussion to catch it, and... unless I'm crazy... I don't think they ever name the movie. It's Chime. If I could make a request for these youtube versions... maybe display the title of any movie being discussed or referenced on the screen?

I'm so glad Amanda brought up that we didn't get to see that scene between Austin Butler and Lea Seydoux. We totally got jipped on that. Dune part two's only flaw.

Basically none. Very high level summary of the movies, not much if anything given away.

Mallory is freaking hilarious. That popcorn bit had me rolling.
"Civil War" was a real let down for me, and I'm big on Alex Garland. Or at least I was until "Men" and now "Civil War". I thought Dunst and Plemmons were both strong in their roles, but found the screenplay and the execution of the themes/ideas Garland seemed to be working towards were just weak. I haven't met anyone yet who has talked about liking it; or even seeing it. Also, I wouldn't call it successful, really. With its $50M budget, post-production & promotions costs, it might've broke even at $122M.
everything Austin Butler has done this year: 10/10 no notes, would recommend.
Haven't watched this yet, 2x isn't possible for me, yet. But I would really love if Sean talks about Humanist Vampire Seeking Consenting Suicidal Person

Every time Nayman is on this pod I have a sense memory of every dull film class I took in college and how much I loathe this sort of egg-headed, academic approach to movies. It’s exactly what I come to The Big Pic to escape.

Idk his stuff always really works for me, even Noah.
I like Aronofsky well enough. "Requiem..." is remarkable, "Black Swan" and "The Wrestler" are both strong. But "Mother" got a little too overbearing (& batsh**) ultimately, and "The Fountain" was okay. I'm skeered of "The Whale".

@@Lamidemonami7891 it was incredibly boring, and the pacing was quite poor. The movie was an hr and a half and if felt like it was 3 hours. I understood the themes of being socially isolated and not feeling comfortable in your own skin or comfortable in your own body within the terms of gender identity, but ultimately it did not execute on those themes in an compelling manner.

Hitman was so clearly not one of the best of the year. And the fact it entered and exited the discourse SO very fast has borne this out. And it's almost completely attributable to an ending that asked us to swallow circumstances that the movie or characters certainly did not earn. Absolutely deplorable, nonsense trainwreck of an ending. Movie and credibility destroying.

I totally disagree about this being a bad year of movies. It's way better than last year already. We've had Civil War, Memory, Snack Shack, Horizon, I Saw The Tv Glow, Drive Away Dolls, The Beekeeper, Challengers, etc.

@@votdfak How do you figure they’re without credentials. Sean is one of the most knowledgeable and studied film historians in the film podcasting sphere, and Amanda’s no slouch in that regard either.
Both have backgrounds in journalism and criticism and actually know how to discuss filmmaking and storytelling, which is something that 95% of people can’t do beyond tHiS iS tRAsH and ThIs Is GoOd.
I’m not sure how many more credentials people who are lifelong film fans and have literally made it their career need to have in order to withstand the skepticism of some randos on the internet.

‘Dune 2’ has good visuals but the central story remains mundane if not non-existent with Zendaya moping about.
‘Challengers’ is simply icky and filled with pretentious provocations.
No real breakout ‘best movie’ so far imho but ‘new life’ is worth a look.
Zendaya and Chalamet are awful...
