To everyone, if you are having problems with ANY console, do NOT put the power brick on carpet, it will choke it with dust. Also keep the Xbox horizontal since vertical blocks a MAJOR air vent. I hoped that helped

just take the the top half of the xbox and take the top part of the disc tray off and the xbox will never have a problem again, my dad bought an xbox for 20 dollars and they said it didn't work so all we had to do was take it apart and clean it and it worked like brand new!

3 LEDs doesn’t mean the GPU overheated. It means General Hardware Failure. It can occur when the motherboard gets hot enough and flexes, disconnecting some of the connections to the GPU or some other electronic component.
my fans don't even spin up when I turn it on but the 3 lights are flashing, the power symbol in the center that's lite doesn't flash like urs did. Also if taking ur hard-drive out fixed your xbox then ur hard-drive is causing the error right? Does it goe back to flashing red if u put your your hard-drive in and restart it?
About 2 and a half years ago me and my brother went to play the 360. It had the red ring for the fourth time since we had bought it. In frustration my brother threw a shoe at the console and it has never gotten the red ring again since that day :)
thanx that helps a lot, if you have four and the audio video cable that comes with it is not plugged in yet its that you have yet to plug that into the console because I got four then plugged in the audio video and it left and igot all green after that.

Maybe you can try what i just tried..hoover every vent to remove some dust then get hold of a stirrup pump and place a fine nozzle into many of the openings/gaps and get someone to pump the stirrup pump and hopefully remove some more dust , it just worked for me anyway :) .I had 3 red rings!!
Hi tampa tec , my son had his xbox do this very thing when he was trying to do an update on live.. is this normal and should he try to do it again? Also the memory card he had in it was to small and he couldnt afford a harddrive so someone at the game store told him he could use a usb port memory stick.. could this be causing it to over heat? Thanks
Was just cleaning my Xbox 360 and trying to fixed the dvd drive since it won’t read games. Had it all open and turned it on and accidentally touched the open dvd board thing/wires/connections on the metal shell of the Xbox heard a zap now 3 red lights 😞
Right before my 360 got the three light red ring of death, I noticed that some games would start to have more visual errors. Like, Left 4 Dead would have weird looking textures, or textures would take forever to load on GTA, and blocks wouldn't load on Minecraft. Basically, I figured out that the GPU was damaged and not just overheated.

Thanks. I had 4 rings, i unplugged the power cabel and did other things. When i put in the red yellow and white chord, and turned it on it worked!

3 lights can happen from overheating but its usually the gpu or cpu needs a reflow so connections start happening

I didn't have the 3 red rings, I only got 1 red dot and this video helped anyway
if you have slim check the hard drive take it out turn it on if it works turn it off put the hard drive back In it may not work everytime

I have a question, how come none of my fallout games work on my 360? I put the disc in, it'll read it for a sec, then it says to open tray.

2 RROD Overheating/Cold solder
3 RROD Hardware
Pulsing GR and RR Hardware
4 RROD AV issue
