You should come and see how the relationships work amongst the Aboriginal Australians, especially in the north of Australia where they still do things traditionally and still have culture if i dare say.
I myself have half brothers who are Aboriginal, and according to their traditions I have more than one mother and have met about 5 of them. Also I don't have any children of my own but according to their traditions each child from my biological half brothers is also my child and their children are my grandchildren. I'm still not used to meeting and remembering so many relatives whenever I see them. I even know that one brother had a kid with one of his wives, they broke up and one of the other brothers went and had a kid with her too, so those kids are cousins and brothers at the same time! Still blows my mind.

Jaunsar is pretty close to where I live and this custom of becoming the wife of all the brothers, by marrying the eldest brother is inspired by Draupadi (co-wife of the five Pandava brothers). The people there worship Draupadi and the Pandava brothers, also marrying their daughters to outsiders who are already married. I don't like this custom much because, they tend to marry their daughters to men twice their age, who might've had grandkids at that age.

Nobody talking about a new custom in America where a couple do everything that would show the outside world that they were/are married. That goes up to a wedding and wearing rings and taking his name.
What stops it from being legal??

Some states say common law marriage is still on the books.
But most US states don't recognize common law marriage anymore.
I'm surprised I'm not seeing any conversation on the growing awareness and practice of Ethical Non-Monogamy in the U.S. Specifically polyamory.
In the olden days in some places in Sweden a couple could have a trial marriage, which worked kind of as an engagement and the man and woman would live together, but if the woman didn't get pregnant they could end the arrangment and part ways. This was very much frowned upon by the church though and was technically illegal.
