I fell in love with Rik at first sight! (And Vyvyan soon grew on me.) Bambi was the first episode I saw, and thoroughly enjoyed; but I reckon Bomb, Interesting and Time are slightly better.
It's fantastic and if you're old enough to remember it first being shown, it was WAY ahead of its time. Imagine the raunchiest comedy on TV was porridge , and then this came on. It made superstars of them all instantly
Madame Tigre Le Deuxieme and now we've all got to go to the laundrette just coz vyvian says so. God it's like living in nazi Germany this place. Neil, I hate you
Then why not make your own. Cut an old photo out then duplicate on the libray photocopier. I still have 20 or thirty from years back. Goodness have'nt you any friends? IE a friend with a camera phone.
By far and away my fave episode. I remember when it first aired. I was so excited to see Motorhead. Now, years later, I see Coltrane, Robinson, Laurie. Fry......... I am complete. Well done Ben Elton and Alexeii Sayle for the best episode ever
When swapping the characters they basically moved everyone up by a notch which made Mike, who's status as "the cool guy" is really only made possible by the level of his flatmates, drop to the bottom. Vyvyan usually takes the second place through sheer violence, (P)rick should by all accounts be the lowest in the picking order but Neil is just too depressed and down trodden to care. Also I know they had the budget and the manpower for the most outrageous props for the smallest gag and blowing up their sets but having an actual elephant in the studio interacting with actors? That's amazing!
I was born 10 years after the young ones started but i found my mum's vhs tapes of the young ones when i got older and loved the show since. This will always be the best episode. GET BACK IN THE SACK SOCK
As a spotty teenager, my best friend and I were massive fans of THE YOUNG ONES. I'm slightly embarrassed at the recollection, but we did a homage to the Bristol locations seen in this episode and took photos on our crappy little camera (no mobile phones in 1985). Codrington Road (their home address), the laundrette and finally Temple Meads Station were all on our itinerary that day. Oh to be that enthusiastic about anything in middle age!
@@DerTodSoldat They were happy, innocent days! I pretty much knew the script by heart on watching this again - many thanks for the upload. Sheer nostalgia! X
Here I am supposed to be getting up for work in two hours and instead I'm watching 40 year old episodes of The Young Ones laughing uncontrollably and wondering if I should just stay up and watch a few more episodes and just shuffle through my day. Thank you for this.
This was the first episode I saw. I was blown away and hooked after the first 5 minutes. A friend brought a video back from the UK to Australia, a while before it was on TV here. I took it around to show virtually everyone I knew, and made them watch it. :-) It's an obvious thing to say, but it was totally unlike anything I'd seen before; it was like a bolt of lightening! We'd come off the mostly schmaltzy U.S. stuff to this -- wow!! Ok, some of the US sitcoms from that time were good, such as Cheers, some of Newhart, and a couple of others, but they were nothing like The Young Ones. I mean, I'd come straight from seeing MASH, Cheers, Cosby and Family Ties to this. Crikey! :-)
I only watched it for Motörhead and Alexi Sayle. I knew Lem from when he lived next door to my Ma's and Alexi from the local pub. Both in Fulham, when it was tough as old leather and working class, a golden period. Terrific live bands in some of the most important music venues back in the day. Fuck but I don't half miss Lem. Roadied with them for a bit too. Main job being to make sure no one went near the bandit when Lem shot off for a gypsies.
9:22 - "Vyvyan, if you can't keep control of your socks, you shalln't be allowed to have any!" - Imagine hearing half the lines in this series out of context.
I always loved seeing how much damage Rick was willing to sustain for each episode. He not only took the major hits, but also did the experimental explosions and falls.
15:32 Ok everyone here I go *The Ace Of Spades Lyrics* “If you like to gamble, I tell you I'm your man You win some, lose some, all the same to me The pleasure is to play, makes no difference what you say I don't share your greed, the only card I need is the Ace of Spades The Ace of Spades Playing for the high one, dancing with the devil Going with the flow, it's all a game to me Seven or eleven, snake eyes watching you Double up or quit, double stake or split, the Ace of Spades The Ace of Spades You know I'm born to lose, and gambling's for fools But that's the way I like it baby I don't wanna live for ever And don't forget the joker! Pushing up the ante, I know you gotta see me Read 'em and weep, the dead man's hand again I see it in your eyes, take one look and die The only thing you see, you know it's gonna be the Ace of Spades The Ace of Spades.”
This episode first aired May 8, 1984. The last time they did their laundry was October 23, 1981. Vyv has worn his three pairs of socks & knickers 269 times, so 807 days have passed. The day Neil is called smelly is January 8, 1984, and the day they do laundry and go on the program is January 9. However, ITV only aired two episodes of University Challenge in January: the 20th (Southampton vs. Exeter) and the 27th (Southhampton vs. King's College Cambridge). Therefore, Scumbag College must be an alternative name for Southampton, and Footlights College, Oxbridge is either Exeter or King's College Cambridge. EDIT: I just got to the part where they were two weeks late because of the train hold-up. The guard says they got the incoherent call from Neil on the 24th, which rules out the 20th. The 9th is, however, two weeks and four days from the 27th. So it must have been on that date.
I used the Felicity Kendal underwear line today with my brother so I had to check for this episode. So so good, start to finish. Like so many have said, the best of the bunch I think. RIP boys, we love ya.

Rik Mayall is the funniest bloke I have ever seen.
"Just shut up and tell me the answer"
"What, shut up and tell you the answer?"
Absolute gold
John
@@SamuelBlack84 that part was brilliant crop rotation in the 14 century
@@richarddavies4647 Considerably more
"Just tell me the answer". Apparently, Rick didn't make any sense of what he said at first.
What, a minute from now or a minute from then?
Nigel as Rick is brilliant, I say. Same for Rik as Vyvyan :-)
Madame Tigre Le Deuxieme and now we've all got to go to the laundrette just coz vyvian says so. God it's like living in nazi Germany this place. Neil, I hate you
Uh, I think you got your actors confused. Rik was Rick and Adrian was Vyvyan. Nigel played Neil, by the way.

50p for the passport photo booth.. shows how long ago this was, the one in my local Tesco is about £6 now
Then why not make your own. Cut an old photo out then duplicate on the libray photocopier. I still have 20 or thirty from years back. Goodness have'nt you any friends? IE a friend with a camera phone.
Robbing fascist bastards 😂
By far and away my fave episode. I remember when it first aired. I was so excited to see Motorhead. Now, years later, I see Coltrane, Robinson, Laurie. Fry......... I am complete. Well done Ben Elton and Alexeii Sayle for the best episode ever
We sow the seed, nature grows the seed, then we EAT the seed.
RIP Prick and Bamber Gascoigne
The washing machine saying "No Way!!", always cracks me up.
You can hardly blame it! 🤮
Motorhead and Alexei Sayle's revolutionary biscuits song, doesn't get much better! Great to see this again, must be over 30 years since I last saw it.
In 1985 this was the 1st episode I watched in the states on MTV and been hooked eversince!
I watched this show when I was like 6, Im so thankful it, and The Kids in the Hall laid the foundation for my "different" sense of humor.
This is probably the young ones most memorable/iconic episode out of all of them.
GET BACK IN THE SACK SOCK
im not going back in there, it stinks.
Neils impression of Rick is mind blowing
Same for Rik's impression of Vyvian
As a spotty teenager, my best friend and I were massive fans of THE YOUNG ONES. I'm slightly embarrassed at the recollection, but we did a homage to the Bristol locations seen in this episode and took photos on our crappy little camera (no mobile phones in 1985). Codrington Road (their home address), the laundrette and finally Temple Meads Station were all on our itinerary that day.
Oh to be that enthusiastic about anything in middle age!
Nothing to be embarrassed about
@@DerTodSoldat They were happy, innocent days! I pretty much knew the script by heart on watching this again - many thanks for the upload. Sheer nostalgia! X
Motorhaed was the 1st metal band I got in to THANKS to this show seen as a kid top tv in 80s
not metal. Rock and Roll band. Lemmy said it many times and I agree. It aint metal.
I can remember everyone was really shocked about Vivian's head being knocked off by the train and talked about it for ages.
You took your time, you bastard!
That fucking _scream_ though...
The reason I loved this show
Here I am supposed to be getting up for work in two hours and instead I'm watching 40 year old episodes of The Young Ones laughing uncontrollably and wondering if I should just stay up and watch a few more episodes and just shuffle through my day. Thank you for this.
I do the same
They're so worth it ❤
This was the first episode I saw.
I remember watching all the episodes when I was about 12 - 13 and all the jokes went totally over my head... Awesome to rewatch
I truly think this is their funniest episode. Nasty and Sick and Summer Holiday are great, but nothing falls flat in this episode.
Sick is one of my favorites too. I apologize for not getting more up yet
9:22 - "Vyvyan, if you can't keep control of your socks, you shalln't be allowed to have any!" - Imagine hearing half the lines in this series out of context.
This was the Must Watch programme when I was at school. Good stuff.
"Is that true, Bambi? Did you do a Disney nasty?" Funniest question in history of world television.
I can hear in that Neils voice lol
They're doing a Disney nasty to themselves these days
I always loved seeing how much damage Rick was willing to sustain for each episode. He not only took the major hits, but also did the experimental explosions and falls.
Have you seen he and Ade in Bottom?
Nigel was the one who complained of a stiff neck after the eclair fell on his head.
@@clownnookie that's what he gets for being a lanky hippie.
Just recently discovered this and I'm very into this. Pure comedy gold throughout.
What an absolute gem of an episode! Thanks.
What a fantastic ep Motörhead Stephen Frye and Hugh Laurie
Where is Hugh Laurie?
jmpsthrufyre Hugh Laurie plays Lord Monty on the Footlights College University Challenge team.
Johnny Calvino Smash the oinks!
Johnny Calvino thanks mate !
Don’t forget Emma Thompson and Robbie “Hagrid” Coltrane.
Howling 😂 forgot how awesome this was, still is⭐⭐⭐⭐
RIP RICK AND LEMMY
Lemmy?
Synbious Singer of Motorhead. The band in this episode. Also was a roadie for Jimi Hendrix...the more ya know
Ah okidoki, thanks. :)
Duh what? Not everyone knows who Lemmy is, I didn't until I asked. There are millions of people who don't know of Rik.
Synbious out of 4 billion that is just unacceptable
I can't get enough of these guys. I've been watchimg then since the 80's on MTV❤❤❤❤🥰
A comedy ahead of its time.I grew up watching this, absolutely hilarious
Love this show. Used to watch it with the whole family long ago!

Ok everyone here I go
*The Ace Of Spades Lyrics*
“If you like to gamble, I tell you I'm your man
You win some, lose some, all the same to me
The pleasure is to play, makes no difference what you say
I don't share your greed, the only card I need is the Ace of Spades
The Ace of Spades
Playing for the high one, dancing with the devil
Going with the flow, it's all a game to me
Seven or eleven, snake eyes watching you
Double up or quit, double stake or split, the Ace of Spades
The Ace of Spades
You know I'm born to lose, and gambling's for fools
But that's the way I like it baby
I don't wanna live for ever
And don't forget the joker!
Pushing up the ante, I know you gotta see me
Read 'em and weep, the dead man's hand again
I see it in your eyes, take one look and die
The only thing you see, you know it's gonna be the Ace of Spades
The Ace of Spades.”
This is excellent from the young ones
I have this on DVDS
There'll never be such comedic genius like The Young Ones again. God help us.
I was in my first year of university when this was first broadcast. Packed “tv room” and when the washing machines spat out the clothes we roared.
I ❤😊 you for posting this BEAUTIFUL Show!!
This is hands down the very best episode of The Young Ones, ever!!
The best of the best sitcom ever made in my opinion. I saw it air back in the 80’s and it still makes me laugh.
Still incredible in 2022
All episodes of the Young Ones are brilliant but I'm sure this is the funniest with the best quotable lines.
Still brill. I need some entertainment in 2024
Favourite episode this one....Which fuckimg bell end gave it a
thumbs down ?
Aye, it had to be a windowlicker
That or Thatcher and Leonard Cohen.
It was me!! Ahahaha! You nazi!
Tod Soldat probably the copyright police with his other thumb up his arse😃
My knickers are are so old the only thing holding them together is the stubborn under stains😂
Vyyvian rules!✌🏼
You freaking rock!
I used the Felicity Kendal underwear line today with my brother so I had to check for this episode. So so good, start to finish. Like so many have said, the best of the bunch I think. RIP boys, we love ya.
