I loved this when I was a kid. My parents and my mum in particular, were appalled by it. There are times when I still do my own "danger" as I set up to do DIY, cooking or just housework. It's so wonderfully silly.
Rik and Ade were skilled physical comedians, but as with all such endeavours, they were lucky to escape with comparatively minor injuries. Oddly enough, Ade walking into the frozen shot of himself on fire and asking coyly, "Can you spot what went wrong?" is my favourite Ade line.
i think Rik said in an interview that Ade actually forgot the safeword when he was sent on fire, and everyone thought it was just part of the act for a few seconds before they realised
Filty, Rich and Catflap. The Dangerous Brothers. Bottom. If you look closely you can see the same sets being used in all three. The shop, the rooftop, and the lounge room/kitchen. Considering the sheer amount of bodily harm and property damage in these three programs, it is very impressive.
Yes, Rik is dearly missed. Yes, there will be no one else like the old bastard. But I'd like to take that moment to point out that Ade is such a fucking mountain of comedic presence as well, it's marvellous. And none other creature ever had such an incredible capacity for shrill screaming.
Both were also really excellent as straight actors; I saw Rick in a film that, l believe, if it were not for him, this movie would never have worked. That's how bad the script was. THe lead woman who was the protagonist had a personality that was not well matched to the role. Rick Mayel was literally the glue that kept the film together; Ade was in some really great roles among them he was a cancer patient in a 2018 revisit of "East Enders"; Really quite excellent he also played a "predator" Professor[??] in another TV series which won him much critical acclaim; Rick would have been proud of him. Rick always wanted him to take on more serious roles especially after their performances of "Waiting For Godot". Especially as they were BOTH trained actors and Rick's father, who was also a Prof. of Dramatic Arts at the U.of Manchester and trained them both. He also directed both Rick & Ade in their first foray with Beckett's "...Godot". BTW, I learned that listening to their interviews.
Ewan Bruce Thanks for the capital letters, you must know I don't understand the English language without them. Yes I have read the book and the title is done as a joke. Stop taking everything so literally that people write and say. If you can't get his humor then you don't have a clue in the first place.
I had never seen any of these, and the one where adrian falls on the mattresses and they chase each other around destroying the stage had me almost in tears!
Stefano Pavone I say this about Mr Bean, he could've done it, but I think they should've done a movie where he plays Beans rival in the 3 wheeler! that would've been Cult Gold.
Dave Harris well drop dead fred was crap is the reason it was his humour but didnt fit the setting. Love this and his other stuff but it has to fit so hed have to write or co-write it
The firing of the catapult wipes me out every time. You don’t have to see it, the way the wall buckles and plaster and ornaments fall down tells you everything. You only see the aftermath. Absolute perfection.
Anyone else notice it is, i think, Norman Lovett of Red Dwarf fame getting his legs chopped off in the Torture sketch? Perhaps that’s why we only see his head as Holly!
I remember this.....Ade was supposed to fall to the ground but forgot and the flames scorched his face, he also forgot the 'safety' word and got scalded legs....... incredibly dangerous I do agree.....but very, very, funny.
Fun fact; in the uncut version of the scene where Abe’s legs were set on fire. Abe struggled for a few seconds trying to remember the safety word needed to extinguish the flames by saying several random words before finally rolling on the ground.
After watching this a few times since Thanksgiving, I realized this was a total homage to Monty Python. Especially to their sketches of the Pirahana Bros.:Doug and Dinsdale /Dinsy. We never meet Doug and Dinsy [except as a picture] we only meet their victims during the sketch. Rik and Ade became Doug and Dinsdale on some level; The reference to the use of Irony as torture is from [Michael Palin] the escort service pimp who is afraid of Doug because of his use of litotes, irony, metaphor, symbolism and .... [gasp] sarcasm!
This was their attempt to recapture lightning in a bottle after The Young Ones. There's a lot of recycled jokes, like "Shut up and get on the chair" is just "Shut up and tell me the answer".
Is this from Saturday Night Live? I don't remember the sets being quite so big or lavish. I remember the characters, but not these sketches, so massive thanks for posting, Scott.
It's a shame Ade quit comedy, hes into cooking and morris dancing these days (I'm not lying). His take on it is that he's been in comedy for 30 years and he's heard all the jokes (refers to something spike milligan said which was basically the same thing but it was in the 80s and Ade thought it was rude of spike to say so at the time, eventually he too felt that way).
Proper funny stuff from 2 comedy greats. From the days when those who took offence kept it to themselves. Not like today when saying that offends me constitutes a way off life for far too many nutters. My answer to that sentence is so what,if you are offended turn it off and let the rest of us enjoy some funny guys being funny and your opinions are of no interest or consequence to me in the slightest.
Wow when is this from?? Was this like a precursor to bottom? because it certainly has that feel about it. I can't believe I never knew about this all these years.
Mum wouldn't let me watch this so I told her I was watching Dr Who
I loved this when I was a kid.
My parents and my mum in particular, were appalled by it.

Rik was one of a few people who could walk on stage and without saying anything people would laugh and feel better, and not even know why.
A lot of Comedy giants were simply respected. Rik was loved
Tommy Cooper was another great that walked on stage and people laughed spontaneously.
@@briane5706 agreed.

NOT SO MUCH SKILLED AS PASSIONET
@@inthegrass11 Complete crap
Yeah because it genuinely did go wrong. Ade forgot the safe word. It’s the scene that sparked my love of playing with fire. 😂
Perfectly dangerous, I trust you'll agree. You'll be missed Rik. :(
Yes, Rik is dearly missed. Yes, there will be no one else like the old bastard.
But I'd like to take that moment to point out that Ade is such a fucking mountain of comedic presence as well, it's marvellous. And none other creature ever had such an incredible capacity for shrill screaming.
oh yeah, together they're the perfect comedic power couple

@@eleni1968 You're talking about Drop Dead Fred right?
Why the bad language? Grow up.
He died to soon
Miss you so much already Rik. When a Genius like Rik leaves, it makes you so sad your left with talentless crap like Gervais, Brand and Walliams.
I actually liked the office UK. I'm with you on Brand and Walliams though, biggest wankers ever. And Brand has a serious God complex.
Stig Lauren so did Rik
Ewan Bruce No Rik didn't, that was his comedy persona, as he said "I do 'ego'...and that's about it"
Ewan Bruce Thanks for the capital letters, you must know I don't understand the English language without them. Yes I have read the book and the title is done as a joke. Stop taking everything so literally that people write and say. If you can't get his humor then you don't have a clue in the first place.
STOP SNOGGING AND LISTEN TO ME
I practically know every word to some of these sketches and I still laugh
I had never seen any of these, and the one where adrian falls on the mattresses and they chase each other around destroying the stage had me almost in tears!
Essential 'after band rehearsal' viewing. lol , huge thanks for the upload, brilliant comedy.
"We control the horizontaaaaaal! We control the verticaaaaaaal!"
"And we control out pants!"
"Yeeeeaaaahhhh!! XD
I don't know how many times I've seen these in the last 30+ years, but moments like, 'Marcel, the petrol!' still make me laugh out loud.
Raise your standards bro

Rik mayall was one ov the greatest comedians to grace out screens...forever missed never forgotten..
Havent seen this before, good fun to see something "new" of Ade and Rik.
you can see where bottom came from when u watch this early work.
Yep, and also watch Filthy, Rich and Catflap that they did in 1987, written by Ben Elton but very Bottom-like.
They kept alot of the crew over the years tbf
Utter genius & thank you Scott for uploading this priceless gem for us all, especially given recent events.
R.I.P. Rik Mayall.
You will be missed!
I have never seen or heard of this pre-Bottom style show.
Rick Mayall was taken far too soon from this world, he was a comic genius and had the acting chops to do serious drama!
COMPLETE FUCKIN NUT-CASES BUT FUNNY AS HELL
Ade looks strangely like Beetlejuice in these...
Stefano Pavone I say this about Mr Bean, he could've done it, but I think they should've done a movie where he plays Beans rival in the 3 wheeler! that would've been Cult Gold.
Stefano Pavone I dunno..... I dont think the americans really understood Rik Mayall.... 'Drop Dead Fred' was a total flop there.
Dave Harris well drop dead fred was crap is the reason it was his humour but didnt fit the setting. Love this and his other stuff but it has to fit so hed have to write or co-write it
Rest in peace Rik Mayall, you are my hero!
"Try and look like a hotel, for heaven's sake!"

Thanks for uploading this Scott, I'd never heard of the dangerous brothers show, this is just Rick and Ade at their best.
UTTERLY brilliant! Top respect to Rik & RIP... but Ade was always my favourite and the one who cracked me up! Genius! 😂
Rest In Peace Rik, you will be missed ... :(

R,I,P Rik Mayall (7/3/1958 - 9/6/2014)

His last work was a few episodes on man down he was still brilliant right up until he died
Ten years already
"I...will...not...talk!"
I use to watch them all the time when I was little, they were so funny!
omg Rik and Ade!
how have i never before seen this!
🤣🤣🤣
Its Rik mayalls hairdo that cracks me up here.
Anyone else notice it is, i think, Norman Lovett of Red Dwarf fame getting his legs chopped off in the Torture sketch? Perhaps that’s why we only see his head as Holly!
Fuck man I'm so glad they met eachother. Two comedy legends right here
Rik Mayall, comic genius. RIP.
I remember this.....Ade was supposed to fall to the ground but forgot and the flames scorched his face,

Rip Rik he was a genius i have subbed and liked the video greetings from ireland😊
Thanks for recommending. Ill take any of their stuff.. I love the crew that was in Young Ones.
Fun fact; in the uncut version of the scene where Abe’s legs were set on fire. Abe struggled for a few seconds trying to remember the safety word needed to extinguish the flames by saying several random words before finally rolling on the ground.
Its Ade 😂
yeah, but who doesn't love Abe Ebmonbson

They are real funny, thanks
Ewan Bruce then pleas elaborate
Neil and Mike 😂
You can definitely see how the Dangerous Brothers paved the way to Bottom 👍
This was their attempt to recapture lightning in a bottle after The Young Ones. There's a lot of recycled jokes, like "Shut up and get on the chair" is just "Shut up and tell me the answer".
Dunno if its just me but Ade in the plum suit in torture is giving of major bettle juice vibes lol
Ade was actually burnt in this sketch.
When Saturday nights where the place to be inside sat watching this!! - I know, I was one of them 👏👏👏
"Everyone keep quiet while he sets fire to me" is the original "This is fine."
God I miss riks genius and unique sense of humour
Like Laurel and Hardy these 2 slapstick greats worked best when together, miss you already Rik!

Thanks for this, two of the best...ever

This is like the Three Stooges, except more violent and much funnier.
Barbara Powell present day lural and hardy 😉
I forgot how much Ade looked like a cross between Macaulay Culkin and Steve Buscemi.
Pure fate brought these two together.
Thank Fuck For That!
remember watching the tower inferno sketch and thinking it was the funniest sketch id ever seen
wow saw this many many years ago on satday nights !
In the second to last skit Adrian was looking like Beetlejuice.
and then there were Young Ones..
fekkin brilliant!
I'd like to remind the kiddies not to try this at home as it invariably ends in death
Rik amd Ade are second to none, both individually and as a duo.
That was a surprise kick.. in the goolies
