1965 Shelby GT350R | The Mustang They Wanted to Build

- This was one of the coolest shoots we've had the opportunity to do. Jim Marietta is one of the original Shelby mechanics and we got to spend the day with him and talk about the 1965 Shelby GT350R he's recreated with Peter Brock and Ted Sutton built the way they originally designed including the independent rear suspension. This is the OVC Mustang.
Sit back and enjoy the stories and the ride...

i know im asking the wrong place but does anyone know of a method to get back into an Instagram account?
I was dumb forgot the login password. I love any assistance you can give me
@Alvaro Chaim Instablaster :)
@Conor Leroy Thanks so much for your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im in the hacking process atm.
Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Conor Leroy It worked and I finally got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thank you so much, you really help me out !
@Alvaro Chaim No problem =)
Never gets Old! If I need to Smile....... here it comes!
That just puts the biggest smile on my face just watching this!!!
That man knows how to shift!
even in the dress shoes!
we don't need no stinkin' DCT's! OVC : "hold my beer"
You're looking at the arm of experience! Unfortunately, young people today generally couldn't drive a standard, and in any event, not with the talent displayed in this video - it's becoming a lost art.
Gotta 'Heel-n-Toe' that sucker on the downshifts. I'd go toothless for one of those cars, lol
the old man is still a bit slow if you ask me
The half shafts are a thing of beauty, beautiful sled.
That was an experience! Thank You Bro.
Shawn, you're also going to have to try to drive the new 2020 Shelby GT500 Mustang. You'll probably want to get a new Mustang instead of
that 2020 mid engine Corvette. People are really raving about this 760hp beast. Mustang lovers should check out the following two videos:
1) Jay Leno's Garage and 2) Shmee150. The GT500 really sounds awesome in it's different drive modes!
OG Rev Matching how it should be done
That is an awesome car! And, a super sweet red Bronco at the end!!!
Very cool. These guys are legends and it was a true honor to spend time with them and this car!
awesome job on that car.my favorite car of all time. nothing sounds as good as those old hi po 289s. very nice driving by the old man.
Perfection in this video from the car to the living legend that Jim is
It is a 331 and roller cam.👍
It must have been an out of body experience spending time with that walking encyclopedia, and I must add...one hell of a driver.
It was incredible spending time with Jim!
He was breaking 100mph down that 12 min stretch. Damn!
Shawn & Jim - I’m less than 30 seconds into this! My wife says that I still think I’m 18...!! But that’s not when I’m behind the wheel...
I’m off to enjoy the rest of this vid...
What an experience getting to do this shoot!!
AutotopiaLA - Shawn, having. seen the whole vid now, it was an experience watching you do this shoot!
It was an experience being there as it always is. Simply incredible!
awesome
would love to know the rim size are tire size on that goodyear- thanks!
You hear Mustang, think it's cool, yes must be... Until u drive it and get it's really some driving beast, not only a name.
That is as cool as it gets. It's number one on my list.
I’m with you! Such a great experience to ride in this with Jim. Awesome!
Between this car and the new 2020 GT-500, I'll take this each and every time. That engine sound is glorious!
I didn't watch anything on the new GT-500 even on J.Leno's YT 😁😁
Albanian King Owned one. Traded it in less than a year after buying it...like so many others.
It’s really one of the ultimate DRIVER’S cars. As in you have to DRIVE it, not let a bunch of computers and electronics move it down the road for you. I rode in a friend’s ‘65 GT-350 as a teenager in the late 80’s, and still remember the feeling to this day.
@Adam Fears Too much power for a manual - read up on it more. The modern cars over 700 HP these days it's more practical to allow the car to do the shifting.
www.motorauthority.com/news/1120910_the-2020-ford-mustang-shelby-gt500-doesnt-have-a-manual-transmission-heres-why
Chevy did that weith it's recent rtounds of the Camero:
arstechnica.com/cars/2016/11/how-did-the-new-camaro-zl1-cut-12-seconds-off-the-old-ones-nurburgring-time/
@Adam fears - 2020 Corvette C8 no stick shift. The sticks will all be gone in a short period of time!
Just wondering who/why would someone give this a thumbs down.. Even the most adamant Chevy/Mopar guys would have to appreciate what that car is.
Cause some people just suck no matter what you show them 🤷🏼♂️
@autotopia LA exactly!! Nearly thirty years ago, I witnessed a couple of camorons talking shit about an absolutely pristine ‘68 Shelby GT500KR owned by a guy in the Mustang club I was in at the time. I had to ask them if they knew ANYTHING about vintage cars, as that particular car had been judged at about 98% at several SAAC shows in its day.
Ive driven Mopar for 30 years and I can fully appreciate what these guys are doing.
Jay Troxel I’ve owned 7 Camaro, 1 Mustang, and 1 Hellcat...and this car and the 69-70 fastroof Mustangs totally rock. Real car love here...no hate
Jay Troxel Guaranteed, the thumb downers are driving “tuner cars” with a fake ass wing. 😂
Man that sounds marvelous and really carries the mail. Pony express all the way!!!😎👍
Now that’s a real ‘stang
Dude, best episode ever, I was smiling the whole time. I learned so much and enjoyed the entire episode. Thank you for this, you guys are doing good things, I appreciate you guys!
The noise and how he shifts got me smiling too! What a car, and man can he drive!
If i were a traffic cop... I'll give that Shelby a pass!
If you were a "traffic cop" chances are, you'd write your own mother a ticket. LOL
@@poopypuppyproductions7409 ...unless she's driving this 65😂😂😂
@@94Whiskey lol
If i was a traffic cop, i,d let him off, But i want to go for a ride!
@HE DP - Well, I'd give him a citation. Not a ticket citation, but an award citation!
Ken Miles: RIP
For those net experts who point to the first gen Mustang's lack of IRS as proof that the European car makers were ahead of the tech game in the 60s, they don't know what they're talking about. Ford DID have an IRS ready to go for the Mustang. As Mr. Marietta points out, there was no business reason to offer the IRS, since Ford was selling every Mustang they could build with the solid rear axle. Great vid, BTW. That engine sounds fantastic.
Crazy that $15 per car was considered cost prohibitive. And it was an honor to spend the day with Jim. The stories!!
@@AutotopiaLA Ford sold half a million Mustangs in the first model year. $15 X 500,000 = $7,500,000 Adjusted for inflation, $7.5 million is about $60 million in today's money. $60 million here, $60 million there, and pretty soon you're talking about real money.
U
@mrsloika some people just have to knock others to build themselves up and feel better. I’m a Mustang guy to the core, but I can appreciate a nice gm or mopar (I’ve never really dug euro or Japanese cars). Yet some people ONLY see ONE make or marque as having any validity. It’s really lame...
@MrSloika - A solid rear axle sure didn't keep the Shelby GT 350 from beating the snot out of the Stingrays, that had it from 1963 on!
Love watching the camera crew trying to catch up🤣🤣
Curious to know how hard they tried...?
Sometimes they have a harder time than others keeping up....this was one of those times.
They popped up at the 12:28 mark like the RUclips FBI.
Personally my favorite Shelby Mustang of all time. Raw, beautiful and sounds amazing.
One of my lottery cars, for sure, but maybe a resto mod, with a 3.0L eco boost and modern suspension wrapped up in the vintage body.
That ride along was the epitome of visceral. The look, the sound, the rawness & of course...Jim. Hall of Fame. Thx for inspiring.
"It's a fun car to drive" you're gonna have to take my word for it cause you sure as hell ain't drivin' it.
Dream car. Period.
Awsome. My childhood revisited. I love those 289 hi-po mustangs. My dad had a 65 289 hi-po 4 speed. What a great car. I bought one a year after I got out of the Navy in 82 that I drove the wheels off of. Until it dissapeared one night. Never found. Damn I miss it. Too cool!
I'm amazed Jim really knows how to drive not to mention build a car! Being in his 70s makes he it look soo effortless!.... def life goals
Damn that's a cool car. Sounded so good! Thanks for another great showcase!
Jim: Legend
and those nuances tied to the shared builds and stories - priceless
That ride: A refined beast
Thanks!!
That car got to be one of the best sounding you've had on your videos.
Agreed. All old school high revving badass!
That's funny man, Jim is always checking his mirrors for cops just like I do
Stan Mendoza I saw that too! No cop with a soul would have given him a ticket.
That and i think he was checking the gap he was putting on that CTS V wagon.
My first car was a 65 fastback 289 high performance. Many things were done to this car by a mechanic who knew his stuff. I did not know much about it at that time but it was a riot to drive. It was surprisingly fast and gave no quarter when put to task. The time I had it was 1970 and those were the days. You are fortunate to be there where these repros are made. Gone to heaven.
What a sound!! Nothing like it in the world!!! Even the idle is just an amazing sound. I miss my Black and gold 66 fast back.
National Treasure,,, thanks for bringing this to us.
Those downshifts are priceless.....
Jim and the car are national treasures! Such an incredible experience shooting this with him
When I built my 66 GT coupe back in the 80's I weighed and reduced the weight of everything I could, the door weighed 40 lbs empty , with the glass and cranks 75 !! got mine down to 2700 lbs full of fuel. glove box door was about 5 lbs right there. lots of fun, even drilled the brake and clutch pedals. I drove the guy at the town dump crazy as he would weigh my car on the scale every so often, the fun thing was one day at moroso motorsports park I pulled up to the scale and some impatient but nice guys with fox bodies ran the scale for me, they were pretty surprised when the scale read 2650 lbs. kept the car 25 yrs but eventually the cowl rust and otherwise wear and tear on myself made me sell it. still miss it thought.
I love the sound of that beast! So much fun!
That's the power of a 289!
@Cameron Bates - The 289 used in The Daytona Coupe had 4 Webers, tuned headers and cranked out a whopping 390 HP. That "289" power gave the Coupe enough grunt to hit 197 MPH down the Mulsanne Straight.
Nothing winds like a small block Ford.
And 390hp was a conservative detuned number to last 24hrs. 289's today crankout more than 500hp reliably NA and shift well above 8,000rpm
Thanks Jim for a nostalgic treat that's hard to beat! Those guys who try to tell you nothing sounds as good as a big block should have their ears cleaned of wax and listen to this baby! Excellent video with some sweet driving. Great job!
Just saw “Ford vs Ferrari” and this nicely ties to that! God I love that car!
Such a great movie! And yes, this is part of that history
Geez , engine = music.
My WRX and NSX just don't tote the note. Reminded me of when I had a Chevy II with a 327. Didn't have money for mufflers after I bought headers, ran them open for a week. Sweet for a 19 year old...
A truly well built Hipo 289 will give you goose bumps.
Best sound Mustang 350!!!!!!What a car.....:-)-:)
Gorgeous car, awesome sound. But honestly, having owned a K-Code fastback myself once, I can testify how close that roll bar is to a helmetless unprotected head.
Wear helmets next time guys. That roll bar is a potential serious injury in even a small bingle.
Obviously Shawn has one of the best “car guy” jobs on the planet. Very very cool.
dude was shifting his ass off...great video!
My ultimate dream car, what a complete beast of a Shelby Mustang....
Omg...this vid really captured the feeling of that beautifully powerful beast of a car! Felt like I was in there shifting! Good job. Subbed.
Thanks for the sub and what a ride!
I’d rather have this than the new GT500 !
Robby Turbo - plus it would be an appreciating asset...
Would love to have seen some more shots of the car from the outside accelerating away. But still it’s a stunning piece of engineering. 👍
Camera car couldn't keep up.
MR.MARIETTA don't play...that's how you drive a Shelby,thanks..great video!
Have some respect. Stop calling the guy man
Just talking like he’s a friend and he appreciates that
Incredible i talked to Jim last year about buying one of these continuation cars big bucks over $200k
Consider they were less than $5000 new...
So funny, Jim just that camera car that came flying up on him. What a car. So glad guys like Jim can bring back the best era of racing and street cars ever. Shelby , Miles, the crew, the best. My favorite, most missed and talented Shelby driver - Dave MacDonald.
This was such a fun episode to shoot and yes on Dave
Another masterpiece from AutotopiaLA!!!! Keep it up bro!!!! You guys are giving Jay Leno's Garage a run for its money
The old man can shift like you are suppose to shift a car like that. It gives me flashbacks when I was between 17 and 25 years old doing the same thing in some Fords I had back in the day. I've seen young guys that get into a pretty hot car and end up either missing a gear or grinding the shit out of one because they are timid and afraid of shifting it with power or scared they are going to break it. But it's always been about taking control of the throttle and clutch and making it go like you want and need to get somewhere fast. Shift it like you are trying to get away from someone after you stole it.
love the opening scene, you can literally see how that gentleman is taken back in time and reliving his youth as he's stepping on it and trashing it. those throttle blips also, he clearly likes his revv-matching.
another awesome and fun presentation right there!
shout out to you Shawn and the entire AutotopiaLA crew from cold and rainy germany all the way to sunny and warm California. :-)
My Blue oval BLOOD pressure is redlining right now....flippN BaddAss...Rip Carroll Shelby thank God for his love of the mustang and cobra....👍👍 Shawn 🙂🇺🇸🇩🇪 from Delaware
This is one of the best days of my life! Getting to know Jim and getting a ride in this was incredible!
Except for the Hertz cars, I was never big on '65 Mustangs. I just changed my mind.
65 is "the year" if you love mustangs, its the best looking of them all, always has been since it was conceived.
@HardcoreMotors - Here's something that just might endear you even more to the '65 'Stang. This car with a "little" 289 cu in V8 blew the doors off of...……….are you ready? - The larger engine (327 cu in) Stingray, not one, but 3 years running for the SCCA B Production Class Road Racing Championship, '65, '66, and '67! Shelby turned this car from a "performer" into a stormer - gotta love the Shelby American crew!
@@trillrifaxegrindor4411 I do disagree. Strongly. That's the housewife's mustang time. 67-69 is the mustang's prime.
@@Loulovesspeed Thanks for the insight.
HardcoreMotors - I’ve always liked the original Mustang. An’ only partly thro’ my feminine side... It’s the simplicity, freshness and authenticity of the design. Whilst I’d agree with its greater equality of appeal, ‘housewife’ doesn’t accurately describe the youthfulness of the car and those college kids and first-time employed that bought the first Mustangs to get them to/from school & work. Like clothes and music, the 64+ Mustang was the car that allowed young folks to differentiate themselves from their parents.
Truth is, I could equally go for a 67/68 or 69 because of the development and ‘lessons learned’ from the 64+. But you just gotta respect as well as appreciate the 64+ as a ‘first-off’. Remarkable when you look back on it.
holy!!!
that engine rumble is music for my soul
Yes it is! Perfection imo
I was wondering if the OVC is selling the Complete IRS unit they got from Mustangirs.com as a Separate Part for the 64 1/2 thru 70 Classic Mustangs?...I would like to use one on my Future plan 66 Mustang Coupe Retrobuild!...I am Just Saying!...God Bless! 😇
I don’t know if they are. You’d have to contact them. They’re info is in the description
Fantastic episode, first time watching. What a great car and the sound. No wonder you had a smile from cheek to cheek,Going to be hard to beat.
Teenaged me rode in a production ‘66 GT350 in the late 80’s. That alone was a thrill. I can only imagine running in a GT-350R...
Jett Crash being from Australia we do have mustangs, but Falcon GT where the cars we rode around in.
A concept lost to Ford for decades: make the premium features an option. Like in the Foxbody Mustang Ford sandbagged their own product with 4 bolt wheels, drum brakes in the rear and less than adequate size brakes. The other big performance deficits were the jitterbug rear suspension and the junk TRX tires. Ford could have made the rear disc brakes and 5 bolt hubs an option on the GT. Enthousiasts complained about the lack of aftermarket wheels for 4 bolt hubs. The 4 link rear suspension needed a panhard bar. In the 80’s Ford was like the parent who just wasn’t ready to let their 19 year old daughter out of the house to start dating.
Awesome comment!!
I keep coming back,,, this thing sounds sooo good..! Brings tears to my eyes.
My gosh! That thing sounds awesome! I own a 2017 GT 350 and thought that sounded great - and it does but…
That's how to drive it. Sounds amazing.
There is no sound to equal a properly built Ford at full song. God Bless the OVC Crew.😎
To have lived an amazing life at 17, Priceless!
Really great to see the builder giving it the full treatment!
They’re making what they intended in 1965 which is awesome imo
Awesome experience! Thanks for sharing! As always great content for the car lover!
I'm all about Chevy..but after seeing this and hearing that vintage motor sound I could say that I appreciate the Ford mustang and the history of the car.you don't hear that sound to often anymore. Thanks A.T.LA.
Awesome car always been a fan my grandfather has one of the 65 gt350s not the r model but he has had it since 79 or 80 showed it for several years got burnout on people trying to buy it sets in the garage until he pulls it out for a half mile ride down the road and back to the garage
Damn, this car just makes me smile.
Great episode, thank you!
I love how certain cars are not built to be cool but are actually cool. This one sure fits that description imho.
I have a theory-the only people (or things, in this case) that are actually cool aren’t TRYING to be cool.
Not bad for a "secretary's car."
Man that sounds good!
Wow what a car and what a story, shame they are only making 36 but that will make them very collectable in the future...awesome 😊👍
As I'm writing this, there are 3 "thumbs-down" on the comment log. I'll bet those 3 are numbers "37, 38, & 39" on that buyer's list. ;^)
Damn! I don't know about you, Shawn. But I sure as hell need a shower after watching this one. Such a great amount of history in this video too. Just amazing.
Carroll Shelby was the best thing that ever happened to Ford. Without him, everything they produced would have topped out at "secretary's car" -- up yours, LEO!
There a small difference from hi perfirmance an a real race tuned an built car...carroll was all around europe in the 50s driving porsche an all the v8 english cars even waa friends with a Ferrarri guy by the name Dino...he knew how cars should be but never at sacrificing handling...i used to drive my 70 dodge challenger SE 318 got some TA AAR cuda trans lowered the car...an soon realized most of my other friends muscle cars didnt handle well at all...its nice to know shelby was doing something about it...thanks what a exhaust note
Wow!!!! That was an awesome episode Shawn. Frigg'n awesome. Jim was pretty serious but you got him to bust a smile when you said something about feel'n 17 again. I love that IRS and would love having one of these. Damn!
He is so cool. Game face on when driving but I did get a slight smile...then it was game face go!!
I just wish I could find her and buy her back. Sometimes we have to make sacrifices for our families and end up selling what we love. In my case my 66 Hertz
I owned a 1966 Hertz GT350 Replica. This car looked identical from the engine to the wheels to the paint. I won may trophy’s with my GT 350 and I will tell you these guys are building-some bitching GT 350 Fast backs. Unfortunately I had to sell mine do to my wife which was my Girlfriend at the time getting pregnant. I wish I could trace it and buy it back. Things we do for our Families. The only regret is that My Daughters tell me that I was dumb for getting rid of it cause they could have enjoyed it now...one day they will understand.
That man can drive, totally awesome he ripped on it like that!
Absolutely. Wasn’t expecting that ride at all
That's how it's done fellow gearheads!...... 1st gear.... 2nd gear... 3rd gear...Waaaaaaaa.....Smiles abound....
Haaaà one schelby gt 350 y love the mustang fast bak sir caroll chelby is one mister sorcier the mécanique
Wow that sounded crazy, love it 😎👍
Great video. Loved how he goes through the gears. Brings back memories
I Know the History behind these Mustangs and the Camaro I am a Chevy Man But If i had the Money I would buy one of these Stangs and love every minute of it. Ford in my opinion does have the best Sound you have to work with a Chevy to get a great sound out its ass.
Wow! Nothing like shifting an engine through its paces. Thanks again Shawn. Any idea of the price tag on 1 of these gems? Or they're probably all spoken for already i bet. ▪☆☆☆▪

That was really awesome Shawn. What a car! Thanks for sharing as always.
Is that a terlingua badge on the fender???
it looked to be one. These were 'those guys' weren't they?
That sound! I wonder how the independent rear would have changed the mustangs development though the years.
