I took delivery of a '65 Mustang with a 289 cid, 4 barrel carb., 4 speed manual transmission on Sept. 22, 1964. Because of it's performance, I thought Ford had put the 271 horsepower motor in it by mistake. I street raced at every chance I got. That was stupid, but I had a lot of great times!

I love this car for the visceral feel that it is projecting. I grew up in a strong Ford family in Detroit. This car brings back the strong memories I have of that glorious period between 1963 and 1968 when Caroll Shelby and Ford ruled the racing world. I remember seeing pictures and talking to Ford engineers about the Mustang IRS. These guys are not BSing, it is the real deal. I always wished Ford had green lighted the IRS for production or as an option for the Mustang. I owned a 1966 K-Code hardtop. Jay is right the GT350 and engine pulls you into the driving experience. If I have one complaint with this car and it deals with switching out the original solid lifter camshaft for a high lift roller rocker camshaft. I have nothing against the roller rocker. I have one in my 1987 Mustang GT 5-speed Convertible. It does what it supposed to do perfectly in a 87 Mustang but not in a 65 or 66 Shelby GT 350. If you ever owned K code Mustang the beautiful sound of a solid lifter making power at any speed is truly intoxicating. It was part of allure of the 289. I know roller rocker makes more power but who cares. The car is an historical throw back to an era that a few great men got together and made something historical and unforgettable. The manual steering, high pressure plate clutch, un- silenced air cleaner, noisy exhaust and solid lifter cam was the strong allure of the Shelby GT 350 and 289 K-Code engine . I hope the Venice Crew will give the buyer the option to have a solid lifter cam in his GT350. Outside of that the car is perfect in its execution.

To be fair, the SCCA designed the GT350 more than Carroll Shelby did. Ford wanted to go sportscar racing in 1965 (Lee Iacocca in particular) and they tried to shove the Mustang on to the SCCA but the SCCA were having none of it. Quite correctly they told Ford the Mustang was NOT a sportscar and to go away because they were dreaming. Facing this situation, Carroll Shelby went down to his buddies at the SCCA and asked them "What do I need to change on a Mustang before you'll accept it as a sportscar?" And they laid out all the changes which needed to be made. And from there, Shelby American made those changes happen in the form of mass production. Of all the Shelby Mustangs, the 1965 car was the only car which truly adhered to the SCCA's homologation requirements.

THIS is THE BEST of the Best... JayLo’s Garage!! What wonderful history and insight into the early Shelby era. I had a 64 Falcon, 289... crane roller, needle bearing rockers, vertex mag, hooker headers. Ran on weekends at Yellow River Drag strip outside Atlanta. Hearing the stories and now having these Gents build another 36 Shelby Stangs is just incredible! Thanks Jay for this incredible history lesson!
