Suva is safe. The only ones you need to be weary of are the street boys (11 years - 25 years). They work in a network of numbers to grab and run with your items. Especially during the night life.....oh! This is probably common around the world, but don't be scammed by the locals selling Fijian artifacts. Have a local help you out. Vinaka, bruss.

Just don't go near the bus stand.
It is clean in the central business districts, some neighbourhoods where there's no illegal squater settlements and villages. Avoid the Market and Main Bus Station - it's super filthy, pick pockets and it reeks of urine. I grew up in Suva and travelled and lived in Europe. So coming back to see the changes, it was so much more beautiful and cleaner over a decade ago.

It's usually fine during the day. It's at night when you gotta be careful. You'll have opportunists who might pick pocket or snatch and run.
But like most cities, you just have to be mindfull and not take your safety for granted.

There are snakes in Fiji mind you, and they've been kept well under control by mongoose. The one snake that's common is the pacific boa and it's totally harmless.
