In this candid and heartwarming interview, Tam O'Shaughnessy, the life partner of the late astronaut Sally Ride, describes her long relationship with the first American woman in space. From their days on the teen tennis circuit in California through Sally’s historic flights on the Space Shuttle Challenger to their parallel academic careers and later, founding their own company, Tam tells how their deep friendship blossomed over time into a romance that ended with Sally’s death from cancer in 2012. As the Executive Director of Sally Ride Science@UC San Diego, Tam continues to inspire girls to embrace STEM, and shares her profound pride as the sponsor of the newly commissioned R/V Sally Ride, the first Naval academic research vessel ever named for a woman, now operated by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego. It’s so tragic that Sally & Tam didn’t have the opportunity to grow old together. Dr. Ride must have had the best healthcare available to her, yet, she only survived 17 months. Largely because pancreatic cancer is almost always diagnosed after it has spread to the point where it’s almost impossible to treat. Losing pioneers like Dr. Ride a huge deficit. Perhaps her other legacy will be earlier detection & more effective treatment for this very aggressive & deadly cancers.

There certainly were some Knuckle Draggers in the Media, asking Ms. Ride if she cried when things got tough

I remember reading the story of her preparation for her first ever space flight in my 4th grade class what now seems like centuries ago, but to say that she broke a glass ceiling, broke barriers and never let anything or anyone bring her down is a tremendous understatement, not only in NASA or in a college atmosphere but throughout the world of STEM, Sally made a difference everywhere she went, her role in encouraging men and women to not only pursue their passions and follow their dreams was infectious and she was an amazing woman who will be missed by all whom she made a difference for, either directly or indirectly, please continue to Rest In Peace Sally Ride!

I'm guessing the recently released Netflix series "Challenger: The Final Flight" which includes a reasonable amount of footage about Sally is going to reignite interest in Sally's accomplishments.
