  • People typically respond to the question "What is your salary expectation?" by offering a specific figure or range. However, providing a number without a solid grasp of the overall role proposition and requirements can significantly weaken your negotiation leverage.
This video aims to guide you in delaying specific figure discussions until both parties have a comprehensive understanding of the role and the candidate's qualifications, fostering a more mutually beneficial negotiation process.

Instead of a long-winded answer, why don’t you do your homework and understand where the market is willing to pay for someone at your level of experience?

Specific disadvantages are listed at the beginning of the video. It is entirely acceptable to provide a number if the individual has a complete understanding of the overall proposition of the role and their responsibilities. This video is for those seeking a deeper understanding of both parties before disclosing a number. Additionally, money might not be the only thing one values; there are also growth, mentorship, and other aspects that one might not receive answers to until the technical round of interviews with managers, especially in the tech industry.

She is roleplaying someone being asked this question in an interview, she doesn’t just not know. You don’t want to tell your prospective employer any number; why you would think providing the employer with a google-able number thinking that’s what their asking is confusing. If you are applying somewhere, you probably know what the pay for the field is. If you offer more than the next guy, why would you say the markets value for the position.
