Armour is important and upgrading is worth it, just prioritise levelling your weapons and your character first. When choosing armour, prioritise your overall weight, then poise boost. If a boss is giving you trouble, that is when you would want to look at the damage reduction of armour. Also in DS1 shields are really, really powerful - people recommending you dont use them are probably more used to DS3/Eden Ring where shields aren't very good. One of the easiest DS1 builds is heavy armour with a shield, this will get you through the entire game with little to no rolling. The reason people are suggesting you dodge roll more is because later entries in the series pretty much require rolling to complete, so it's good to get used to it now. Main thing to remember is in DS1, the best way to play is holistically - dont stick to one playstyle. Ideally you will be using blocks, dodges, multiple weapon types, bows and occasionally magic when needed. Getting used to this everything playstyle (while still focusing on your dex!) Will prepare you for the late game of DS1 and the whole series.
@BenjamightGaming I dont often impart so much knowledge, but I've recently found your channel and it's such a breath of fresh air seeing someone who is taking their time, paying attention and just generally playing the game in a very engaging way. Keep up the good work man 👏
this is so important. DS1 is unique in many ways and should not be treated the same as the others. its not perfect but I feel like it has some of the widest range of opportunity to make anything you want to do possible. anyone telling you you "shouldn't do something" just doesn't know "how to do it"
Great job with learning the boss! What a tiny little corridor lol. It's funny how you thought you didn't land the drop attacks but they were actually landing! Sometimes you don't get the drop attack animation and just the damage. If you get that Halberd leveled up and the strength requirement for 1H you will be on a great track!
Thanks Brandindennin, appreciate that. Yeah, during editing I was like "Wait, where those actually big hit numbers?"... it's nice getting confirmation, because I was looking for that animation I saw in the beginning. I was SO proud of myself on this fight. :-)
The halberd and several other weapons have a different animation for when you land your attack and when you miss. That's why you stumble during your practice swings. When you actually hit something the recovery time is much shorter.
That was an amazing capra demon fight! One thing you might want to investigate further into playthrough since I saw that you already headed to te Blighttown:there was an item in Firelink Shrine you couldn't reach, it might have something to do with the elevator nearby. Love your playthrough, it has become my way to spend time while returning home from work!
The people who say "armour doesn't matter" have probably played the game like 10+ times. If you are really good at dodging it doesn't matter that much but for a new player I think that you aren't quite there yet. They are right about not not upgrading it tho, that will only make a tiny difference.
Exactly this, DS1 especially armour is really useful, from what I've seen in comments for this whole youtube series is people giving tips that apply to DS3/ER, but do not apply to DS1
Great job! That boss is annoying AF. Funny little tidbit since you're already past it--that 'Here' message outside of the Capra Demon's arena is an infamous cheese location. You can stand there and chuck fireballs over the wall and kill him without even entering the fog wall :)
Welcome back! Quick tip for you, you can keep your stamina buffing shield equiped. Just put it on your back, that way you can two-hand a weapon, AND keep the stamina buff!
Current death count : 75 I have to admit , killing enemies in one swing is so satisfying . Glad you are trying more weapons . The Capra Demon is my least favorite boss mostly because how annoying it is , the layout of the arena and the two dogs it has . All that said , I have to congratulate you on the fact that you defeated it on the third try . That's was amazing . Next up , The Depths .
Thanks Alex... I was pretty surprised myself - I thought for sure I would go in there, die once more real quick, and then have to take him on for a big chunk of the following episode. The new weapon I think made a huge difference for me - it really does crank out some damage.
I think a lot of people got confused on the coments, or maybe they have played only ER or DS3, but armor does a diference in DS1, with the heaviest armors you got the greater deff bonus. But upgrading them its really not that good thats true.
The path to the depths after the Capra Demon fight is not very obvious for new players in my opinion, at least to me it wasn't when I first played I was completely lost and had to look it up and was mad at myself when i found out where it was, it just seems so well hidden, probably because our attention is so focused on the fog wall to the boss, I assume you have found the path already but if not it is still down there somewhere.
God damn, well done! You beat it in one episode. The Capra Demon took me ages to beat, those damn dogs 😂 looking forward to seeing you take on The Depths.
Thanks Aaron - I agree, those 2 dogs definitely kept me on edge, which is why I made them my first target. I knew if I didn't, I'd be probably killed by back-biting every time I tried to attack Capra. The new weapon made a huge difference for me.
Capra Demon was annoying for me to deal with, as soon as I step in the arena, I do not get a chance to distance myself and I just get killed as soon as I stepped in lol. I will admit, I had to cheese the boss on the first run, on my second run, I did fight fair and square. :)
I wonder if the fact I came to him so much later than most people do (since I got distracted running into all sorts of other places first...lol), if that helped me out some here?
@@BenjamightGaming I think every player who played their own way, experienced the same issue just usually depended how much of health they had and how fast they would react to avoid getting killed instantly. As for me, my playthrough was different than yours and most other players too and when I had to fight a Capra Demon I was too slow to realize there were dogs too so basically I could not distance myself and was cornered, so after that I died to him basically 5 times as soon as I stepped into the arena, thus, I had to cheese it, So, basically no matter if you're early or late, you'll experience the same annoyance as everyone else did on their own playthrough.
Only three tries on Capra. Nice! A lot of new players have problems with the dogs there. You did get dropshots on him, he just doesn't have a special animation for it. Two-handing a weapon has the benefit of increased damage and halves the STR required to wield it, however the moveset is slightly different than one-handing. Putting the shield on your back won't stop backstabs, but you can enjoy the stamina regeneration of the Grass Shield even while two-handing a weapon. You had enough STR to two-hand the halberd, however it has a more sluggish moveset than the spear on account that is a bigger weapon. And there's no parrying without shield (furthermore, only medium-sized shields parry. Small and large shields won't.)
Impressive Capra Demon fight. The small, awkward arena and the extra harassment from the dogs is certainly a noob-stomper of a fight for most people I've seen. Surely, it must be the superior power of the first-time halberd user doing it for you ;) You mentioned not getting the plunging attacks against it, but you actually got two off on the fatal fight. Plunging attacks against most enemies don't have special animations or anything - you probably just had that impression at this point because the only thing you've successfully done it to was the demon in the Undead Asylum at the very start, who has an animation for his size and the fact that the game was trying to draw attention to the attack to help tutorialize you on just how much extra damage it does. That first plunging attack off the top of the steps is what really won you the fight. It hit him for like half of his HP in one go because you got just a nice downward smack. Really nice fight and in way fewer attempts than the average person I've seen play this blind.
Thanks IceMaverick, and you're exactly right... I was expecting to see/hear something more in line with what happened there in the beginning. I noticed during editing the video, the hits did look harder than usual, so I wondered if I actually pulled them off and just didn't realize it...lol.
I hope you will actually try out a light equip load one day. I know you like your upgraded armor but you have to re-try the faster movement at some point. BTW, the grass crest shield won't actually block anything on your back. It does continue to regenerate your stamina though.
Thanks for the tip GameSickTv... I run around lost a bit at the beginning of the next episode, but do eventually find my way there. Those stairs blended in very well.
you are doing great. small hint, buy the boxes from Andre for upgrade and repair in the bonfire. you can use they several times. Also you can check MODIFY EQUIPEMENT whit andre, the ember you give him change something there. continue w this greay playtrough
Thank you Leonardo, appreciate that. Also, thanks for the tips... I keep forgetting to run back and buy those - I need to do that soon, or I have a feeling I'm going to regret it...lol.
Nice job on the Boss Ben he can be a pain for early players (i think you did do a successful drop hit) and the Halberd with shield combo is a great way to go start upgrading that bad boy plus the Black night sword is an nice drop it destroys.
Those red crabs are called Vangrants, and they have a pretty ridiculous spawn condition. For them to spawn, someone needs to die while having humanity and a considerable amount of Souls. Then, they need to die again and lose theses souls and humanity. The game then sends this as a Vagrant to the next connected player you encounter. You don’t need to co-op or invade them, just encountering the little ghost player guys is enough. If the player doesn’t kill the Vagrant (Red crab), it goes to the next player and keeps going until its killed. Everytime they travel they “Level up” and gives different loot I believe. Although they mostly seem to give Twin Humanity. So yeah, you got very lucky. Twice! Although it’s not that impossibly rare. I have seen a couple of them throught the years I played the game. There is also another variant, I wonder if you will see it.
O-M-G... wow, you're not kidding... that's a crazy list of steps. Too bad it didn't show an 'attempt' counter on it's head, so you know how many others have died trying to get it.
53:12 this screen was not random. Sometimes if you die to a boss these games give you a hint to use specific type of weapon you should be trying. 😂 i've played and watched enough playthroughs to realize this. I'm really glad to see you trying out new weapons though.😊😊
With each weapon feeling very different, sometimes it's hard for me to want to make a change, since I would then have to readjust to new timings, distance, and speed. I'll keep trying to experiment some though as I progress.
Just a heads up for the future. I'm pretty sure anytime you exit the game or get a crash, the game should always put you right where you where before the error. At most id expect to be put back a few seconds. This is the same in the other games aswell going forward.
The game constantly saves your position and gane state from 8 seconds ago, and this is what is used to respawn you regardless of how the game was closed.
Congrats on taking out Capra Demon! Quite handily as well. Also, I see you've now been introduced to souls dogs. Everyone likes souls dogs. No one dislikes souls dogs. Nooooope, not a single person..

You spent so many souls on your gear that now you're just a tiny bit behind on your levels, not a big deal but you'd def have a lot more endurance and minimum strength requirements. All in all, you're probably lucky you didn't accidentally waste a bunch of souls in random stats you don't need, there is no way to respec
I would have recommended 2 handing for dark root garden and undead burg, but boy did you choose the absolute worst place to go without a shield! For the dogs you want to block then follow up swing. And shield up and stab with your little spear is the best way to handle the hollow assassins haha
The theif set is for poison resistance. You also +5 your armor, and now you're comparing all armor you come across to that. So you've kinda set up a system where you won't find better armor.
