There a lot of parameter sequencers out there but this one is the cleanest i have encountered. I love that took the time to make it fit into the design philosophy of the native Live devices 🥰
@@ELPHNT there is one (kind of) right now. the new step arp has a mappable sequence tab but you have to make a empty midi track with a midi note to trigger it. Steps is much more convenient 😁
I just had the idea of this and I'm really happy someone already implemented it ! Though, are you planning to include new "Mod" vs "Remote" mapping behavior ? I was thinking about using this on panning and "mod +- 10%" would be the perfect mapping option ! EDIT : it is already implemented is 12's version (just not the one showed in this video)! 10/10 tool!
I’d been looking for something _exactly_ like this the last few weeks, super excited to try it out! Love the design and functionality, I love this new wave of M4L devices with super native looking design and UX.
Loving this device. One (hopeful!!!!) suggestion for the future - a possible 'MIDI In' to trigger steps? So that it is not always clocked internally but that steps can be triggered by MIDI input? Thanks for your work.
This is *exactly* what I've been looking for in M4L for months! Thank you! A couple minor requests: un-synced mode to roll your own complex LFOs and adjustable log/exp curves on the smooth parameter.
I thought about an unsycned mode, but ultimately decided this is a much more useful tool for rhythmically synced modulations. I think there are better tools that exist already for creating complex, unsyced LFOs. Adjustable curves is something I definitely would like to add though.
very cool tool.. wasn't sure i could use it on 3rd party plugins, but as long as the parameter i want to 'step' is set to show up with the configure button it's all sweet! thankyou..
I use hardware a lot and don't have Max. Nonetheless, this idea and video is a great way to think about and visualize using either motion sequencing or drawn LFO's in my tracks. Thanks!
Looks neat. Would it be possible to add an offset parameter, like most native ableton modulators have? I find them really helpful when I want to create a macro for the intensity of the modulation, because they allow you to set a default value for when the depth is set to 0%.
The way step modulators like this work is a little different to normal modulators, so thinking about what controls to include was a little different. An offset control was something I though about but ultimately left out. I'll have a look at it again when I get around to doing an update.
I'm interested to know what benefit you see coming from the Mod option? This was something I intentionally left off to keep things simple as step sequencers tend to be pretty 'absolute' like Remote mode, as opposed to 'relative' like Mod mode. Obviously if there's enough demand for Mod mode then I'll definitely add it.
@@ELPHNT Sometimes I experiment with the mouse for example, the cutoff or the decay envelope or the sustain of a Synth, until I find the sweet spot of the minimum amount of the filter for example to be 350hz (Everything under 350hz "I'm not happy with the sound). Now by having the mod option I can set the filter cutoff to 350 hz and then I can use the + on the mod and press random to your device. No matter how many times I will press random to the STEPS device my minimum will always be 350hz on the filter. Imagine this same with the decay of a plucky sound and the shortest value that the sound doesn't become just a click but stays pluck is 60ms. Everything under 60ms makes it sound like a click. So I set the value of the decay to 60ms and then I do the Mod + to randomise the decay, but no matter how many times I randomise the STEP device, the minimun decay of the plucky sound will stay 60 ms (preventing it to sound like a click and me having to adjust 0-100 on the remote little by little until it sounds good again). Sorry for the long description. I think the 0-100 Remote works fine but when the parameters are counted in hz or ms the "Remote" doesn't help a lot I think to see where you at.
@@ELPHNT ah sorry, now i noticed that it starts based on the beat of timeline, so the sequence can even start in the middle. thats cool. I didnt know that it was possible to link it to timeline like that. thanks
So, actually, it was something I considered, but didn't add. Just because of the way parameter sequencers tend to work, they make a lot more sense to run in Remote mode, IMO. But if its something there's a lot of demand for, I'll certainly add it.
@@ELPHNT Well, it would definitely be useful especially if you could do the steps bi-polar, i.e. producing positive & negative values :) And frankly since 12 there's no excuse to take over the parameter value anymore. If the user really wants it, they can use the antiquated mode. But modulation should be a standard now.
@@Artek604 Totally hear you re: taking over the control. As far as bi-polar stuff goes, that opens up a few design questions I'd have to think about how best to handle. But yeah, totally get you on the take over thing. Will defs be adding Mod mode soon.
Can you recommend a good 303 plugin or any other way to make acid in Ableton? I just got the Ableton trial yesterday. I've previously used the JC-303 plugin with a default sequencer in Reaper. So I can of course keep using that but interested in alternatives.
@@Vingul JC-303 is great. If you want to use something native though, Analog has the closest sounding filter to a 303. You'll have to do a bit of configuring to get it set up to work like a 303 though. Also, Arturia's ACID is phenomenal. The best 303 VST I've found, IMO.
No, unfortunately not - this is very much a 'mouse' type device 🥲 But I think there's potential for a sequencer built to work well with MIDI controllers further down the line.
@@ELPHNT That's such a shame, I can see something like this being amazing for generating new ideas quickly using a midi controller in a hybrid setup. Keep up the amazing work!

i think i found a bug: when mapping it to the different filtertypes(HP, LP, BP etc.) of autofilter it creates a weird bitcrush effect. EDIT : smooth was on 9%, if turned down all is normal - i guess toggleswitches dont like smooth transitions, which makes sense. great device thanks !
With these types of VSTs what I do is use them to generate happy accidents but then I like to see if I can replicate them by hand with Ableton's automations with which everything can be done. Bought and paid for. It's the least you deserve.

Just a regular old Delay, set to Time at about 65ms with Feedback around 75%
