If you heard Madeline asked Helen what date she took the potion, she replied "October 26, 1985." That's the date Marty McFly went back in time in Back to the Future, of course, also directed by Robert Zemeckis.
The delivery of lines in this movie is perfection. Meryl's "What have you two been plotting down here or should I sayyyy.. what else?!" always kills me.
“My ass I can see myyyyy assssss” The level of petty in this movie I aspire to be. They are both so iconic in this movie. Bruce Willis too, but Meryl and Goldie are just so delicious in this movie together.
Did anyone else catch the Frankenstein (1931) movie reference? Dr. Menville, a surgeon, yells "it's a miracle" as lightning strikes in the skylight above. Later Helen Sharp says "it's alive" when she sees Madeline is alive. Maybe I'm overthinking the scene. Anyway, I knew J would enjoy this one.
Goldie Hawn & Meryl Streep had great chemistry here and Bruce Willis is a total legend the way he played his character. That last scene though when they broke apart haunted me for ages 😂😂
In the original ending they didn't waste away, they still looked stunning (after 27 years) travelled the world and got bored of everything even at one of the most beautiful places in the world... lake Lucerne in Switzerland where the women sit on a balcony of a beautiful hotel. They watch an old couple sitting on the grass in a park... the couple still is very much in love, content, while Mad and Hel stare. Mad ridicules them... but Helen now finally realises the true curse of immortality. The old man touches his wife's hand gently... with his still young hand. It's Ernest. The women keep looking at the old couple, their faces turning to skulls for a second right before fading out.
In a deleted scene Lisle admitted to Ernest that she's more than 600 years old. And she killed Shakespeare and others because they refused to take the potion.
"Til death do us part! Well, you girls are dead. And I'm parting." Fun Fact: The film's budget was $55 million. That's Hot Fact: Catherine Bell was Isabella Rossellini's nude body double. Casting Notes Fact: Sydney Pollack portrays the E.R. Doctor in an uncredited role. This is the first time that he and Meryl Streep had worked together since Out Of Africa (1985). Automatic Pushup Fact: A pneumatic bra was built to create the effect where Meryl Streep's breasts become higher and firmer after drinking the potion, but the effect didn't look realistic enough. In order to get the shot, Streep's dresser stood behind her, out of sight of the camera, and pushed her breasts into position. CGI Over Practical Fact: Meryl Streep wasn't thrilled that the film relied heavily on visual effects. Streep claimed that shooting the film was like "going to the dentist" and states that the film is her first, last, and only VFX-driven film. Yet it wasn't. In the scene where Helen (Goldie Hawn) sits down onto a shovel handle, she didn't sit in the way she was expected to. So the VFX people at Industrial Light & Magic had to morph the image to make it look like the shovel handle was going through her chest. Original Ending Fact: There was a different filmed end than appears in the theatrical version. It involves Tracey Ullman's character, Toni, helping Ernest (Bruce Willis) in a ruse of faking his own death in order to get away from Madeline (Meryl Streep), Helen (Goldie Hawn), and Lisle (Isabella Rossellini). The plan worked and the two ended up running away to Europe to start a new life together. Many years later, Madeline and Helen, both parodies of their former selves, with cracked, peeling paint and putty covering most of their grey and rotting flesh, are on vacation in Switzerland, yet they are completely bored and miserable. They notice an elderly couple being affectionate and they become envious of them. As the couple gets into a car and drives away, Madeline and Helen realize it's Ernest and Toni and chase after them, only to be hit by an oncoming car and break into pieces.
The way I've read it was at the end Madeline and Helen are still perfect, but yes bored and miserable and they see an old couple and Helen is kind of sad she'll never get to experience what they have and then the camera pulls in on the old man's hand and it's still young where it was given the shot.,,,no car hitting the girls. That was how Goldie Hawn described the original ending....although the way you write it does sound like a good ending too.
A fantastic dark comedy. I especially enjoy the party scene with a ton of 'dead' celebrities. For more comedic Bruce - Hudson Hawk (turn your brain off and you'll have fun) and Whole Nine Yards (with bonus Michael Clark Duncan)
Romancing The Stone is another amazing Zemeckis movie that's basically 80's Uncharted with Michael Douglas as a Nate Drake type, Danny Devito as his Sully and Kathleen Turner as Zemeckis ' Alaina.

18:35 They were referring to Greta Garbo, who was a huge Swedish movie star in the 1920’s and 30’s. The “I vant to be alone” line was her most iconic line from the movie Grand Hotel. Garbo was also known to live a very reclusive life in New York after she disappeared from Hollywood in 1941. Throughout the rest of her life, tabloids would catch pictures of her walking the streets wearing nothing but a trench coat, sunglasses, and a headscarf, treating her as if she were Bigfoot.

If you like Death Becomes Her you should definitely check out Tales From The Crypt. I think DBH was meant to be his Tales movie. It has Pesci, Pitt, Tim Roth, Daniel Craig & MANY other cinematic GOATS in a damn fun show.
This cut of DBH definitely feels more like a Tales of the Crypt episode, but the original cut of the film (that was completely finished and good to go -- 3 weeks before release they reshot and re edited) was too moralistic and slow paced to be like Tales of The Crypt. It had a totally different more poignant ending and a load of deleted scenes that made the characters more sympathetic but also more male deaths and a big crazy scene with Madeline walking around the house all frozen while the maid freaks out. They removed Tracey Ullman's character (Toni, another love interest for Ernest) entirely and the maid also had a lot more scenes. They removed more than 15 full scenes... and more than 15 extended scenes and reshot the ending early july 1992.
3:29 oh you know, cause he's directed some little movies like... Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, Castaway, Contact, The Flight and Who Framed Roger Rabbit ...

Trivia: Kevin Kline wasn't pleased with the 1 million lower salary and opted out of the role of Ernest. In one of the earlier scripts Lisle turns out to be Cleopatra. During Meryl Streep & Goldie Hawn's shovel fight something went very wrong. One of the metal shovel pieces fell of and scarred Goldie's cheek. Meryl Streep's best friend Tracey Ullman played Toni, a barlady who had a pivotal role in Ernest's escape (after he drives away from Lisle's castle) and was his wife in the original ending. She was completely removed from the film when the ending was reshot. Goldie Hawn and the writers came up with the overeating catlady part. Originally Helen never gained weight. Meryl Streep developed a skinrash during the filming. Catherine Bell is naked Lisle's body double, but she had another role in the film as a flower girl when Lisle arrives at the Spring Party, but sadly the scene got cut. The reshoot ending was only shot 3 weeks before theatrical USA release... one week before the New York premiere. Helen originally sang a version of "I will follow him" in the film before she starts to spray her eyes with the menthol. (You can see the tape playing behind her). Later in another deleted scene she plays the song in her car when she stalks Ernest. The song was also in the movie 'Sister Act' that was also released in 1992. The floating nuns were in the hallway because originally there was a dead Priest in the morgue. Ernest has to ask the worker to leave for a second so he can say goodbye to Madeline.. because the Worker rushes away he doesn't lock the storage door correctly and when Ernest is doing his crazy speech (that was a bit longer) the Priest comes rolling out. Ernest then bumps into slab with the Priest on it... with his ass. The crew created a literal 'push up' mechanical bra for Meryl but it didn't have the desired effect so one of her assistants used her hands. In the theatrical trailer you can see several deleted scenes. Madeline being taken from the home freezer, Toni and Ernest with a dead client at a bar, Ernest carrying Madeline up the stairs and Madeline, Helen and Toni outside the bar. At the beginning of the trailer there is also a scene with Madeline parking at the salon and in front if her is a parked Delorean (famous from the Back to the Future movies also directed by Robert Zemeckis) Robert Zemeckis felt the Toni & Ernest plot was not needed in the film and needed a faster pace so the movie is almost 25 minutes shorter than the original cut as a result.
Bruce had an amazing career and he gave some great performances, but, his characters in this and Hudson Hawk is my absolute favorite parts he ever played.
Meryl Streep played a similar character a few years earlier in She Devil. I loved her in Defending Your Life, where her character was a 180* from the other two.
I always thought this movie showed a that Bruce Willis has some pretty good acting range, despite how relatively silly it was. When I first saw this - I was a young teen, mind you - I didn't realize it was even him until the credits.
The three men are named "Dick" "Tom" and "Harry" after the phrase "any/every Tom, Dick, and Harry" which is a placeholder for unspecified people. The phrase most commonly occurs as "every Tom, Dick, and Harry", meaning everyone, and "any Tom, Dick, or Harry", meaning anyone, although Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable defines the term to specify "a set of nobodies; persons of no note" (taken from Wikipedia)
A movie you can watch on repeat - DEFINITELY. I first rented this movie at a West Coast Video (video rental store) when I was around 9 years old. I picked it because I liked the cover image on the VHS box. It was intriguing to me. 🙃 I loved the movie! Ended up renting it multiple times, which I shared with Goldie Hawn during a Q&A of a comedy tour she did in 2002 I believe it was. She got a kick out of it, as did the audience. Very memorable moment that I cherish. 💞 Unsurprisingly, I am very pleased to see positive reactions to this film. :) It really is an oddly comforting watch.
Great reaction! This movie is basically film-length episode of Tales from the Crypt. There are some really great episodes of that show that could be fun to sprinkle in on the next JL-oween.
15:37 "I vant to be alone" - famous quote by Isabella Rosselini's mother Ingrid Bergman's fellow Swede Greta Garbo, who retired from super film stardom in 1930s still looking very young.
Technology for these extreme effects laid the groundwork for Jurassic Park effects! It's true. Look it up. And the choice of lead names for nicknames "Mad" and "Hel" - terrific!
42:20 Goldie & Meryl sparkle superbly. Bruce is a 'reverse surprise' due to his true fame as action star, here unrecognizable. VERY CLEVER script with some amazing outside references.
I love your reaction...because you are the only one talking about Goldie Hawn all the time. Everyone is praising Meryl all the time, but you really see Goldie. Thank you for it. It is such a unique role for her...
Great review. Ty. Top ten films love before 2000's. Top ten: A Nightmare on Elm Street, The Color Purple, Jurassic Park (saw in theater wow at 9 yrs old) Shrunk the Kids, The Sandlot, The Matrix (another wow in 1999) My Girl (fav) Scream, Child's Play (watches over 100 times) & Death Becomes Her for it has a meaning etc. Was wondering also have you seen all of these?
🥂If Helen & Madeline took a second dose of the potion, would they be alright again? If they were cremated, would they still be self aware? ⏳️Just pondering thoughts.
If you heard Madeline asked Helen what date she took the potion, she replied "October 26, 1985." That's the date Marty McFly went back in time in Back to the Future, of course, also directed by Robert Zemeckis.

Robert Zemeckis felt the Toni & Ernest plot was not needed in the film and needed a faster pace so the movie is almost 25 minutes shorter than the original cut as a result.
8:32 That's a Bloody Mary. Tomato juice and vodka basically.
This movie is so damn bizarre Lol
I've seen this film a dozen times, but only just now realized how fitting their nicknames are. Mad and Hell....
And Ern. So Mad Ern Hell. (Madder than Hell)
And again ... EOM saves my Day , Thank You Sir i need Your infecting laughing right now 👍👊
Contrary to popular belief, there is only one Goldie Hawn.
Leave your plurals at the door, they will be returned safely to you at the end of the film.
The date Helen said she took the potion, was the same date that was in Back to the Future.
The doctor having a stroke while examining g her is one of the funniest things out there
I’d love for you to watch “Elvira Mistress of the Dark”.
A movie you can watch on repeat - DEFINITELY.
I first rented this movie at a West Coast Video (video rental store) when I was around 9 years old. I picked it because I liked the cover image on the VHS box. It was intriguing to me. 🙃
I loved the movie! Ended up renting it multiple times, which I shared with Goldie Hawn during a Q&A of a comedy tour she did in 2002 I believe it was. She got a kick out of it, as did the audience. Very memorable moment that I cherish. 💞
Unsurprisingly, I am very pleased to see positive reactions to this film. :) It really is an oddly comforting watch.
I am so happy you watched this one man. Love this movie and the VFX were pretty slick when they first came out. Much love.
Great reaction! This movie is basically film-length episode of Tales from the Crypt. There are some really great episodes of that show that could be fun to sprinkle in on the next JL-oween.
More like Amazing Stories, which Zemeckis was involved with!
15:37 "I vant to be alone" - famous quote by Isabella Rosselini's mother Ingrid Bergman's fellow Swede Greta Garbo, who retired from super film stardom in 1930s still looking very young.
Some of us are old enough to remember her from 227 and Sesame Street!
I remember her from both, but the first thing I went to was Sesame Street!
Now that is a movie! GREAT CAST and SICK/DARK PREMISE. Glad you enjoyed it - fun time.
Technology for these extreme effects laid the groundwork for Jurassic Park effects! It's true. Look it up. And the choice of lead names for nicknames "Mad" and "Hel" - terrific!
Always love when you have to pause the movie. Especially this one.
FYI, in 1992 Isabella Rosselini turned 40😮😊
JL working it out at 24:20. I came here for this! 😂😂😂😂
42:20 Goldie & Meryl sparkle superbly. Bruce is a 'reverse surprise' due to his true fame as action star, here unrecognizable. VERY CLEVER script with some amazing outside references.
Greta Garbo was the actress who said ' I want to be let alone' but it has been misquoted over the years to her saying 'I want to be alone'
One of my favourite movies! Always nice to see someone else enjoy it too.
Bruce Willis was great in 1987's "Blind Date" with Kim Basinger and John Larroquette.
That is a funny movie. I rented the VHS tape expecting mediocre and was pleasantly surprised.
@@jameskirschling7887 Hope J gets to check it out.
I also commenting hoping he reacts to that film as well.
Never, ever, stop being YOU. You are so freaking funny!!! 😂
Madeline and Helen= Mad as Hell.
They call Ernest Errn. So it's Mad Ern Hel = Madder Than Hell.
Oh man you have got to watch Captain Ron. Kurt Russell absolutely kills it in that movie and it's hilarious.
One of my all-time, Top 10 Movie Outfits.
I love your reaction...because you are the only one talking about Goldie Hawn all the time. Everyone is praising Meryl all the time, but you really see Goldie. Thank you for it. It is such a unique role for her...
I have a strong recommendation for the cocaine cabinet, "Freaked" released in 1993 starring Alex Winter. 👻
J: Thats the girl from 227!
Me: That's the girl from Sesame Street! (Gods I'm old! Lol)
Best Triple Take in cinematic history!!
🥂If Helen & Madeline took a second dose of the potion, would they be alright again? If they were cremated, would they still be self aware? ⏳️Just pondering thoughts.
Lisle said "forever". So I imagine her customers eventually become sentient, helpless piles of dust eventually. Forever.
I didn't even know that was Bruce Willis when I first saw this movie ❤
Another good movie with Meryl Streep was The River Wild. It's a whitewater rafting movie with Kevin Bacon as the bad guy.
Loved your reaction as always.
