With the exception of some scenes in Iolanthe, all Gilbert and Sullivan operas take place solely in United Federation of Planets space! Specifically on Earth.

intentional or not, I like the reference to the very odd scenes in Star Trek Insurrection... nice commentary on how Yellow face is acceptable in Makado but is clearly racist by today’s standards.
What, you mean other than the clear reference to the Albert Popwell scene ( six shots or only five ) after the attempted hold up? Not sure what you're getting at.
@@andrewlockett4569 Thanks. I’m not sure what I I was referring to I probably wrote that at 3 o’clock in the morning using Siri dictation . The point I was making was that the skit about Bongo bongo land is smart in that it refers to The debated racism of the Makado through today’s lens. I think I was wondering if there’s a smart subtext to the Dirty Harry sketch that I missed or whether it’s a just straight up riff.
'As we say "Bongo, bongo, bongo, bongo, bongo !" in bongo, bongo, bongo BongoLand ! ' This operetta, "BongoLand", has potential. A combination of the story of Pres. Omar Bongo of Gabon and Pres. Bob Mugabe of Zimbabwe.
What is this FROM??? This is hilarious! Gilbert and Sullivan are funny in the first place. but to add STAR TREK?? And all that other stuff. I wanted to see the one about the giant shark.
hazface - if it was a question of English you'd have a good point. But, it's not a question of English. The *whole* point of the sketch is that Gilbert and Sullivan are presaging 1970s films - in this case, Dirty Harry. And the scene being parodied was the police officer (Callahan) speaking to the would-be robber and saying "I know what you're thinking. "Did he fire six shots or only five? ....". That's what I think, anyway. ;-)
Sullivan would have said: "I just don't know what the public want anymore" not "I just don't know what the public wants anymore" Old fashioned grammar was certainly more restrained. And certainly more plural.
If you give the public the same types of plots, characterisations and attitudes they are used to, you have a greater chance of success. In Victorian times, musical operettas were the "comfort food" entertainment of the (upper)-middle classes. Giving the public proto-versions of 20th century entertainment would have been so mystifying to them that they would have become hostile. Giving them colonial-type racism mixed with all the other attitudes they grew up with would have been far more popular.
I might just be wanking off my brain here, but I think it's partly due to the excellent blackadder performance. Edmund Blackadder was a contemporary man in ridiculous times and that narrative sounds very inspiring. You have the whole history of humanity in which to plop down some contemporary people and from the following interaction between the ages, so to speak, hilarity ensues.

I know they were referencing Dirty Harry, but the costume combined with the music made me immediately think of Javert from Les Mis. 😂
I was thinking that too. "Did he fire one shot, or zero?"
I genuinely would like to see a Gilbert and Sullivan style opera that takes place in the United Federation of Planets space.
Several amateur companies have done a "Star Trek Pinafore" of one type or another over the years. I think at least one is on RUclips somewhere.
I have always wanted to write a musical based upon Dirty Harry
I was in a choir that did an 'Airship Pinafore' to align with the gas lamp or steampunk sub-genres.
