*chuckles* "Oh yes, post-event the world would have been a different place if we'd been able to keep even some of the children alive." Lol. Probably my favourite of the Mitchell and Webb sketches.
I love the mixed emotion after they all died. It's like, sure, they were zombie mutants hellbent on killing everyone, but they were still human once and at least some vestige of humanity was surviving through them. And then suddenly, they all just died. Leaving the survivors safe but somehow even worse off.
And it’s worsened by the fact that they have no way of determining what it was about Sheila that killed them. She could be a key to a vaccine or antidote, but as they’ve established, they have no knowledge of science left and can’t work it out.
"Well, I'm afraid that's it for this week's quiz broadcast as there's no one else. T-There's no one else..." "People will come" "...let's stand together" "Are you there?" "...yes..." Within seconds, this sketch captured the feeling of being the last ones ever and the crippling loneliness that follows, knowing that you'll die with no help. No home. No hope.
I'd say the opposite - the feeling of connection and mutually assured care and homeliness in the face of apocalyptic adversity was perhaps even wholesome, definately bittersweet. There might not be much hope, but the two undoubtedly found home in the quiz, and with the latter, everything is bound to be ok either way. It's heart-breaking, but not depressing.
The verses from Revelation cited at 8:25 are actually pretty relevant: "And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind. And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places. And the kings of the earth, and the great men, and the rich men, and the chief captains, and the mighty men, and every bondsman, and every free man, hid themselves in the dens and in the rocks of the mountains."

The idea being that "the event" was the result of the President of the World drinking the last of his second beer of the day. The punchline is: " a man with access to nuclear weapons should never get a bit fighty", so if you buy my unproven memory of intended sketch order, and also think that they sometimes intended Mr. Show like sketch connectors, then we can presume that is what "The Event" was intended to be. It might be inspired by or referencing Protect and Survive because they are British and turning Protect and Survive into a game show would be a comical escalation of its absurdity. @@ellen6831 Right? Plenty of other little clues in there too about the nature of it. I think it's reasonable to guess that The Event caused some sort of nightmarish mental effects, like a mass forgetting, or that something directly (not just the trauma) caused madness, which would in part explain why basic knowledge has just disappeared.
A lot of the sketch is shrouded in mystery and I can't really answer some of the clues in the series like "They know who did it" but I feel like I can at least answer "some" of these questions, I believe that a George Romero zombie infection scenario has befell survivors of "The Event" I.E. everyone is infected and will eventually turn into one of "Them" hence why the host in the one segment says "Scratching only makes it worse" and the announcer in another segment also states "Do not be alarmed by the smell." and Peter says "We all smell like this now." Perhaps the disease causes a noticeable odor? or could be the provisional government mass burning infected persons before they turn into "Them" the reason they don't remember much about "Pre Event" society is because the virus is affecting their cognitive skills and also explaining their continuing degrading of attire over time.
