No-one has mentioned DDL's legendary stage-career-ending on-stage meltdown at the National Theatre when he was playing Hamlet, and hallucinated the ghost of his own father instead of the ghost in the play. I think that extreme method stuff of his might only be practical on film sets where you're the lead and everything works around you. That has got to be part of what's behind this sketch.
This has to be one of the funniest and subtlest sketches I've seen for a long time. Webb's performance is flawless as he stumbles to avoid answers that might indicate his psychological problems dealing with his 'tash' and Mitchell's malevolent and knowing questioning just waiting for the eruption. Superb. This sketch convinces me that Mitchell and Webb are comedy actors of the first degree. How lucky we are to have this sort of talent working in British television.
For an interviewer, Mitchell was only there to ask him about the moustache and break Robert. Poor Robert wouldn't want to talk about the moustache and doesn't even want to say the word "moustache" or even the half of it bahahaha! He was a ticking time bomb here
This has to be one of the funniest sketches ever made. I've seen it over and over, ten times or more, and it cracks me up completely every time. Brilliant! =)))
It's clearly a reference to the famous 'Milkshake' scene in the arthouse epic 'There Will Be Blood' where the much tashed oil tycoon Daniel goes berserk over the drink. Note the way this Daniel shook during his breakdown over milk. Milk-shakes. See. There is no end to the levels this sketch can be understood on :D
Also the REAL Daniel Day Lewis HATED his hair style in gangs of New York but kept it for months even when he went home so it could be a reference to that. Funny stuff 🤣
I love how completely random (to use a horribly overused word) this sketch is. Imagine describing this to the other writers "so there's an actor, who plays characters with moustaches, but is mortally afraid of the moustaches he grows."
Well, it's a reference to Daniel Day-Lewis' intensity and impressive moustaches in "Gangs of New York" and "There Will Be Blood", so it's not completely "random".
i can relate to this. Had a beard when i did Father Xmas one season that drove me crazy. Played the character for over two weeks -good money but that beard drove me bonkers - its hair went in my mouth at times and felt itchy.
The way he gets those lines under his eyes, staring at the camera with such a pure... I want to say terror but it's so much more than that. Brilliant sketch all round
That has to be one of the most intelligent, insightful and eloquent comments I've ever read on RUclips. It feels weird...I'm going to look at the comments of some religious videos to restore the balance...
"So is it glued on or...?" "No No its sprout, it grew grewed, it growed on. Its grow, Its grown i should say on my upper lip" My favourite sketch and line. Tv gold!!!!
A parody of Daniel Day Lewis, and the usual parts he plays. This is intensely funny, and well described by whetstonelad here in the comments. Also, love those British glasses.
Agreed with all the comments so far, though nobody's mentioned how he does an excellent pastiche of Daniel Day-Lewis...his "acting style" is portrayed spot-on, as is his old rumoured temper in interviews.
There's a pharmacy near me called Day Lewis Pharmacy and I'm dying one night to stick a Darn Tooting over the top of the Day Lewis. Sadly only a small number of people would get the joke, but I imagine those that did would be laughing for the rest of the day whilst replaying this sketch in their minds. Drink The Milk!
Daniel Day Lewis HATED is hair styles for gangs of New York but kept them for months. And there will be blood is known for the milkshake scene at the end when he goes crazy over a milkshake. Both are subtle references here...
I've probably watched this fifty times, and I swear, I laugh uproariously EVERY time I watch it. These two are so fucking funny. My lady turned me on to them. The farming sketch by them is some genius shit, too...
Apparently 160 people do. I know, strange world. It seems all you need to nowadays is plod along to a RUclips video, write a well-punctuated comment of sheer arse-kissery, and the thumbs-up are sure to follow.
That. Is clever. Tash: a man of oil. Tash; Moustache. Oil; chilis are oil-based, that's why you drink milk to deal with spicy foods. That's clever. That's bloody clever.
Also the real Daniel Day Lewis HATED is hair styles for gangs of New York but kept them for months. And there will be blood is known for the milkshake scene at the end when he goes crazy over a milkshake. Both are subtle references here...
the moustache maketh the man. I feel much more confident with a full growth on the upper lip, women adore it and men show me greater respect. Its one of the most important things in my life in a fire I would prioritise it over the cat sorry chibbins
"This one doesn't think that I'm..." Is such a beautifully weird line.
That’s the best bit
“They grew them big.”
it's totally insane
Great acting from Robert Webb in this one. I love how he stammers and changes his answer three times within a few seconds after every question
Agreed. I feel like he was channeling Martin Freeman a bit there, very convincingly. Of course he might say Martin channeled him ;)
I love it when David plays a bastard, it’s such a funny change-up from what we usually see. “Drink the milk”. Just fantastic.
I know, right? He's such a weirdly captivating sadist.
Have some of the milk, it's incredibly rich and creamy.
it sprout
it grew- grewed
it growed on
it grow- it sprung

Ah! Thanks for the historical context; I did not know this prior to reading your comment! :)
I love how long they leave it between him asking for the milk so that, by the time it comes, you share David's anticipation.
*drink the milk*

@SB GM
That's a very insightful comment. I congratulate you.
For an interviewer, Mitchell was only there to ask him about the moustache and break Robert. Poor Robert wouldn't want to talk about the moustache and doesn't even want to say the word "moustache" or even the half of it bahahaha! He was a ticking time bomb here
Webbs impression of DDL is brilliant. One of my favourite sketches. Absolutely hilarious.
David is especially menacing and even sadistic here.
It's just such a perfect portrayal of a man losing his freaking mind, without saying anything. It's all in the body language and mannerisms.
without a doubt one of the most brilliantly acted and funniest sketches of all time , thanks for your genius
This has to be one of the funniest sketches ever made. I've seen it over and over, ten times or more, and it cracks me up completely every time. Brilliant! =)))
How damn good is Robert Webb in this sketch.
It's clearly a reference to the famous 'Milkshake' scene in the arthouse epic 'There Will Be Blood' where the much tashed oil tycoon Daniel goes berserk over the drink. Hes not afraid dude, the joke is that the moustaches annoy the shit out of him. I cant grow them but I imagine theyre itchy and get in the way.
@@PointsofData He talks about the moustache like it's alive
@@JhericFury not...really? What?
@@PointsofData From the sketch, about the 2 minute mark: [pointing at his moustache] "this one doesn't think that I'm-".
Robert Webb looks just like Nietzsche with that mustache.
i can relate to this. Had a beard when i did Father Xmas one season that drove me crazy. Played the character for over two weeks -good money but that beard drove me bonkers - its hair went in my mouth at times and felt itchy.
a man going mad. that short moment before the interview begins proper. in his eyes. did anyone else spot that?
Yeah! Brilliant. Absolutely hilarious.
It's amazing acting honestly
The way he gets those lines under his eyes, staring at the camera with such a pure... I want to say terror but it's so much more than that. Brilliant sketch all round
Makes one think that each mustache is secretly talking to him and by his reaction it's either incredibly annoying or it sounds like satan.
Love this sketch. Webb looks really good with dark hair and a tash.
The funniest skit I've seen for a long, long, time!! 😂😅😆
someones raided james may's wardrobe
"Skig Tash?"
"Skig T__sh"
love the way he knocks over the milk at 3:48 :P
This is fake - this came out years ago and still no sign of the film they claim he was making.
I must have watched this 30 times. It still cracks me up.
Webb's slow deterioration is absolute gold, this was the first time in a long time ive cried laughing at the TV.
Further evidence, along with his rants, that Mitchell is supreme at being evil and MUST be the next Master in Dr. Who.
That has to be one of the most intelligent, insightful and eloquent comments I've ever read on RUclips. It feels weird...I'm going to look at the comments of some religious videos to restore the balance...

THE BEARD STAYS! *YOU* GO!
No. Wait. Wrong show. Wrong facial hair. Nevermind.
I just went and trimmed my mustache.
A parody of Daniel Day Lewis, and the usual parts he plays.
This is intensely funny, and well described by whetstonelad here in the comments.
Also, love those British glasses.
Webb looks like Daniel Day Lewis in the beginning and Mitchell looks like he belongs as one of the presenters of Top Gear. (:
Why do I think about this sketch all the time?
I absolutely agree. I haven't laughed so hard at anything in TV or movies in ages.
Well, seeing as I didn't realize it was supposed to be like that, they did a bang on job on that (:
Happy Movember everyone!
+Chris Devine I know this was from last year, but happy Movember :)
@@footielad8301 I know this was from 3 years ago, but happy Movember :)
He actually looks like Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will be Blood
I don't even know who this is about, still in tears.

@howley92 No, it's There Will be Blood.
Gangs of New York is a brilliant film too though.
Drink the milk 😂
thats one hell of a good impression, kudos kudos !
Daniel Day Lewis HATED is hair styles for gangs of New York but kept them for months.
And there will be blood is known for the milkshake scene at the end when he goes crazy over a milkshake.
Both are subtle references here...
The Gangs of New York reference was less subtle haha
"it gets hoaahder to kill a man as you get oldah. Not easier. Hooaaahdah"
Webb is a phenomenal actor.
I've probably watched this fifty times, and I swear, I laugh uproariously EVERY time I watch it. These two are so fucking funny. My lady turned me on to them. The farming sketch by them is some genius shit, too...
You'll love the play by play snooker announcers
@TheMikeyReilly Its both, skig tash: man of oil is there will be blood and the boondock fueds is gangs of new york.
"....on my upper lipfff-ffffFFFFF"
I don't even have a moustache and this actually makes me feel uncomfortable Webb is that good haha
A very smart sketch
David Mitchell reminds me of Will from Inbetweeners in this sketch xD
It's based on Daniel Day Lewis
DRINK THE MILK...
Having grown a beard and tash during Covid19 lockdown, I feel all of Skeeg's discomfort. Great sketch
PFFFFF PFFFF PFFFFFFFFFF
Rob Webb is such a great actor.
This is me, whenever I try to grow a 'tash or beard...
Why's there a candle in a lantern at 0:50?
Webb > Mitchell personally. This video is a fine example of this!
Apparently 160 people do. I know, strange world. It seems all you need to nowadays is plod along to a RUclips video, write a well-punctuated comment of sheer arse-kissery, and the thumbs-up are sure to follow.
0:34, that was actually a pretty good set for a sketch.
Bill the Pirate aka Bill the Butcher from Gangs of New York lol.
Fucking genius! One of the best sketches they did. Absolutely pissed myself.
good on you for this. I was too late to donate. any other way to help?
Rivaling Daniel Day Lewis' acting - in-fucking-credible
Robert Webb is right to criticise Mermaids due to what we know now.
You know what works if you have a mustache? A straw.
I agree with the other comments. I was literally on the floor laughing at this sketch> Absolutely first class.
And so farewell to Daniel Day-Lewis - for now.
Did he go J. D. Salinger? Seems like the type.
mitchell looks cute here. very good sketch!
Webb looks good with Jhett black hair.
So much for Mo-vember
They grew them big
@thegreatCOOPS Yes he looks like Buddy Holly.
The idea for this sketch isn't really that great. But the acting made it somehow really work
But why didn’t he ask for a straw to drink the milk.
I say good day sir!
*Cries* He spilled the milk!
8 years later... And I have the pleasure of seeing this hilarious comment. The internet is magical
@@DeathnoteBB
10 years later and I'm here too 😎
It's funny🤣
Drink the milk... so sinister
and there was me thinking they only did it because milk is white and shows up realy well on a moustache
This makes me physically uncomfortable to watch.
A sneering pantomime of impudent crud... at its very best.
He looks like Will frm the inbetweeners !
Humour at it's best.
Danial Day Lewis
Say no more
Just Danial Day fucking Lewis
You’ve got a little something just.. just there...
it sprote
3:48 - what a waste :P
pffft...
I know how Daniel feels. My mustache drives me crazy if I don't shave it after a couple weeks.
Don't need the fake laughter. Let us do that ourselves with imagination
The laughing is real, bro.
Drink the milk....
Lol brilliant.

Ah, that's so fucked up it's funny.
i fucking hate there will be oil, or blood or what ever that shit is called.
DDL is not my generation
...to me Webb is mimicking Benny Cumberbatch.
It's 100% Daniel Day-Lewis, from the choice of name to the use of milk echoing a famous drink your milkshake scene he did in There Will Be Blood.
