I'm a Chiefs fan and season ticket holder, and even I wasn't sure Mahomes was ready when he got the starting job. All these teams who passed on him have people on staff who analyze NFL talent and potential for a living, and have done it for decades. Mahomes was very raw and if anyone saw this coming, he would have been an absolute 1st overall pick. But sometimes stars come out of nowhere, and vice versa. So many NFL legends have come from deep in the draft, and so many 1st rounders have been total flops in the NFL. Mahomes might have been one of those flops if he hadn't had the opportunity to develop under Alex Smith. Throw him out there as the starter right away with a shit team, and he may have not been the player he is today.

    • @TheRealcdawg22

@@TheRealcdawg22 I always said Alex wasn't the problem. He obviously didn't have the arm talent or the ability to improvise Mahomes has, but he had the ability to throw down the field more than they allowed him to. Andy was stuck in that ultra conservative mindset with draws and screens. I think the "game manager" persona was more about the coaching and play calling than Alex's ability as a qb. I think Grbac got more heat in the 90's than he deserved, too. That was Marty ball. Of course, handing the ball to Priest Holmes is a good idea, but Elvis took the blame when the Chiefs couldn't get it done.

Funny fact about us humans, males in particular. Multitasking doesn't come naturally to us until somewhere around our 23rd birthday. Until then, the voices screaming in our heads that "you're about to get sacked, _MOVE_ dammit" is too powerful to ignore no matter what any coach says, & while he was put into a game in 2017, Mahomes was born in September '95 & likely that mind-body connection clicked into place & he was ready.
Peyton Manning is an excellent example of this. While not yet 23, around the mid-way point of his rookie year he simply starts playing like the HOF QB we know even though nothing outside changed. A lot of the bad habits Justin Fields has shown are likely a combo of this & the terrible o-line the Bears have. Zach Wilson literally mentally returns to the friendly memories of the combine.
More NFL coaches need to be aware of this. Going in before this change takes place can really ruin a QB. I think this has a _LOT_ to do with Sam Darnold's play because he returns to the Bad Habits people build up in their heads when overwhelmed. So NFL games keep repeating the same pressures that caused those habits to form, & even he isn't aware of what he's doing but does it.

It's easy to say with hindsight that Mahomes should've gotten picked earlier. Its obvious to say now that Mahomes is an amazing player, that's undeniable. But at the time he's seen as a project quarterback, and he was a project quarterback. He had the luxury of sitting behind Alex Smith, another number one overall pick, and learn for a full season. The Chiefs also surrounded him with an great coaching staff to help him develop. I doubt he'd the same caliber of player if he was drafted into a different circumstance.

One thing I've learned over the years as a casual observer is that players who have a great JR season out of nowhere then go pro, have a high bust potential when drafted high.
Of all the teams who passed on Mahomes, SF has to be the most frustrated. Their pick that year was a bust and they lost 2 SBs to Mahomes and the Chiefs. It wasn't just the 10 teams mentioned in the video who passed on him, others could have traded up for him like KC did.
Here is the thing though, any team with Mahomes would be dominant, some would take longer to get there, but any team would get there. I don't blame anyone because you have to see Mahomes in multiple games to get an idea of just how good he is. Everyone is rewriting history to sound like they always knew. He was lightly recruited coming out of HS and Kingsbury didn't see his potential until an injury to Davis Webb got Mahomes on the field. Even then it took 6 games before Kingsbury saw the potential. That is not the story now, but that is the way it happened.

A lot of picks, teams still hit on, but they weren't PM15, that is for sure. Solomon Thomas, Christian McCaffrey, Jamal Adams and Of course Myles Garrett were not bad pick ups. In fact, that draft class was pretty stacked with talent.

Exactly. If _Shanahan_ was his HC, we'd see 25 TDs at best from Mahomes. No one seems to realize this yet, but 1) Shanahan has a losing record in games not started by Jimmy Garoppolo, & 2) He *_still coaches football_* like he thinks it's hockey: as if his team can't both play defense if they continue playing offense.
He *always* shuts down all offensive effort in the second half. It's consistent. So *part* of the magic at least is the (unintentionally?) weaker defense in KC.

I'm more of a Chiefs fan than I am a San Fransisco fan, but Brock Purdy, as a true Mr. Irrelevant (Final Pick of the NFL Draft for his year) pushed KC to require a Super Bowl OT and played a damn good game himself. The biggest play of the second half was a KC punt that hit the foot of a SF blocker and was recovered by Kansas City- So not exactly Purdy's fault or Mahome's quarterbacking skill. And thats not to take anything away from Mahomes either, he WAS clutch when he needed to be at the end of the 4th quarter and during KC's OT possession. KC went for, and made, 2 OT 4th downs. San Fransisco kicked a field goal on their OT 4th from inside the KC 10 yard line. And the winning difference was that KC touchdown vs. the San Fran field goal. I don't know how many coaches would NOT kick a field goal to take the lead in an OT, especially when you have (and really DO have) a champion grade defense.

Who, without the arrival of Shohei Ohtani taking over the best ever player title, was the best baseball player to ever play the game...dont bother harping about historic players like Ted Williams and Mickey Mantle....they never faced pitching like todays guys do. Trout was that once in a lifetime talent and everyone missed...even the Angels. Then came Shohei who is somehow even better than Trout.... nuts.
