It is odd how we have a need to justify the art we make. I always say I do not know why I am making “whatever it is” as I have no idea what I will ever do with it. The drive to create is innate in so many of us. We need to let go of the guilts and justifications.

The topic is valid. There are 800 trillion videos on making all this junk but one video where someone actually "uses" it and it is literally 2 pages that she glued pictures of her family to and all the rest of the pages are BLANK.
You are right you don't have to "justify" but do you have to lie about it? Let's be real. They only joy from these is the pursuit of making them. Then they just become more clutter.
The only ones actually gaining anything from this is the paper and embellishment industry. And I say all this as a crafter. Once you get buried under all your paper and things you've made and realize you don't actually use them you realize you just like to make stuff and not actually use it. But your ego and identity is as a junk journaler but in reality you are just a crafter.
Even this video is just one giant hoard of journals that will never get used! She didn't even show her actually journaling. For crying out loud. The lack of honesty... this is blatant addiction and base consumerism. That's it.

I make my junk Journals with memories. Things that my kids and grandkids we brought together or not I put in my Journals and some of the tags from those items are so adorable and packaging are so cute . I also put things in my Journals of things we like and things that reminds me of that special day. All papers are recycled that are from my kids school days . I don't have much to leave my kids , but these junk Journals I made from my hands is all I have to give my kids when I pass on. They are my memory junk Journals. So I thank you jennibellie for giving me the idea of my memory junk Journals. I've been a subscriber since 2011 and I enjoy and love your art and your ideas of recycling. Thank you.

Thank you for your thoughts. I began making junk journals during Covid lockdown as a change from Scrapbooking. Fell in love with it, made them all out of recycled items and bits of scrapbook paper. Two I gave to family members who love and use them, another I will gift to a friend with dementia who only remembers the past. I hope this will give her something tactile to finger and maybe even write in. I don't journal myself, which is interesting as I used to be a prolific letter writer, I just love the creativity of making them with all the paper dying, using scraps of anything and I see them as a piece of my craft artwork.

This is great! I love to use my gel print plate to make the papers, but I have no use for the papers once they're made. I stopped making prints for two months, feeling torn, guilty, I dunno what all -- then I went back to the gel plate! I may donate the papers to a nearby elementary school, or to my grandkids, but it's the MAKING of the prints that I like!

I’m one that struggles with the “purpose” of the journals I make. I enjoy making them, but knowing I won’t use it does prevent me from creating them, because I know I won’t use them in the common sense of the term, I feel like it’s a waste of time and space and materials etc, even though I tell myself it’s not and it’s ok to not fill them. It is really tough, and I think it’s partly the society we live in currently, it feels like we have to make the best use of every moment, and so to create something without a use or purpose seems like bad use of those precious moments, when actually creating and being happy is a fantastic use of that time ! 🙈😂

Thank you. I just like to make things, it gives me joy and that's enough. I recently went through a health crises for a year and a half and I crocheted and sewed blankets. It gave me peace and was something I could do, I just stacked them up with no concerns. When I was recovered my daughter helped me sort all 22 of them and she and her sister each kept 3, we gave some away to friends and family who supported me during my illness and we gave the rest to a homeless shelter.

Nice distinction between being a Journaler and being a Journal Maker (in the sense of being a crafter who doesn't necessarily enjoy filling the journal with writing and/or other photos or ephemera). It doesn't have to be "useful"; it can be a work of art in and of itself. Thank you for the great analysis!

It is true that making a junk journal is for fun; to create, to play, to use imagination, to have a good time; but also we could use it as a typical notebook for different uses in our pocket, as a book of recipes, as an album with footnotes, as a book of collection, as a diary, etc. I think we could decide the use we are going to give our junk jounal, according to the ornaments and textures we added in it, along with our needs and likes.

I'm always up for more information and ideas.
I do postcard swaps on groups like mail me some art and ihanna's spring and fall swaps. Artists trading cards at atcs for all along with Jennibellie swaps. I attend mixed media art conferences online and in person. I would not be surprised if I did not have enough small arty "stuff" to add to and fill up a dozen journals right now. There are other things such as inktober and index card a day, prompt lists, how to fill your sketchbook, etc. all over the internet. Plus of course actual journaling...how to get started, keep going, etc etc. I'm not a writing journaler but i do like quotes and poetry. There's something about tthe journal making process itself that is enjoyable. I would suggest that folks who are squeamish about directly doing something on a journal page, write draw or whatever on a separate sheet of paper and glue it in or make a pocket or something like that to stick it in.
Some journals I have like the one with a drinking straw binding (class i took with Doris Arndt) and the Alice in Wonderland tunnel book (class I took with Ingrid Djikers) are just exemplars...doubt I'll ever finish them. The how to of crafting these novel book formats was the main thing and they are just cool to look at.

I want to create some, to fill myself, but I have a bit of a problem with where to place them. My old bought and filled (some half filled) journals (diaries) are kind of filling up their home.
I would love to know what to do with old diaries that are like said before, half filled. It feels weird to start writing new things in them, because they are from so long ago, but it feels like wasting both resources and space if not filling them up completely. Maybe one could take out blank pages from them to place somewhere else.
I often write down my dreams that I remember, in my phone. But I have been thinking about printing them out to add in some real book to be able to read them again not using a screen.
Also thoughts about own poetry, custom recipes, photo album, journals can be used for I believe. And also maybe an address book. Or if one are creating wishlists or gratitude lists. One could maybe add letters from penpals or friends if a journal have many pockets.
Sorry, my brain just flew away with me, probably a weird comment 😅

hi I had many unfinished sketchbooks and my old art that was on loose paper. It was in various places, hardly looked at and it didn't feel complete it felt a bit mish mashy.
I took apart the old sketchbooks gathered all the loose art (all the stuff that is A4 and under) and i made it all into complete sketchbooks/journals.
I am very happy with the outcome because all my old art is in one place where i can look through and enjoy it more. The unused paper i made into new sketch journals.
Maybe you can do something like this with your diary's, you can make the journals the size that is perfect for the amount you have in each diary.
If you do want to try something like that there are ways to bind single pages. Just type single page binding into RUclips.
