Captain Shaw got a lot of undeserved hate for this. He was right on point. Putting hundreds of people at risk without knowing the details of the actual mission? What did they think he was gonna say?
It’s interesting Shaw is questioning why an admiral and former captain are telling him stories. TNG proved that any Admiral on a ship should constantly be questioned.
@@RandomTrek84 we don't call them "badmirals" for nothing.
Yes Shaw was right. Picard would have made the same decision during his command on the enterprise. BUT which captain stays in his cabin while his new ship departs from dock the first time. Why he just let Riker and Picard escape with the shutle and why Seven just had make a report disregarding a direct command and was not escorted immediately to an areest cell…? ST never will be the same if they continue giving no effort keeping things logical within the ST Universe and just keep on going with flat character development and sentimental reminders to the good old times. Please Picard stay now in retirement. next generation and voyager still the best ST there is
@@akjsdgfasdf "Why he just let Riker and Picard escape with the shutle"
---Plausible deniability. Shaw is not going to be part of their shenanigans, but knows they are probably doing something important. Also, it is much safer. As to Seven, he wants her to be able to write books someday.
Now pretty much everyone loves him
I'm just going to say it, Shaw is one of my favourite captains now. The way his voice lilts when he says "Without a chair, Titan's mine now" just won me over.
It's like he's saying bitch don't try me at the same time.
Yes! Yes! I love him. Best new character across all the genres
He's clearly intended to be a foil for the protagonists but nothing he says here is entirely wrong. He has his orders and he has a duty and obligation to his ship and crew and he is holding to that. Even his casual dismissal of their adventures, while disdainful, is likely in keeping with the attitude Starfleet Command has about Picard and Riker.
Now the sleeping arrangements were clearly intended to reflect Shaw's contempt.
@@jricks3909 and because of his trauma with the Borg, he errs on the side of crew safety.
@@eastleford20
As a captain should. Lose less crewmen that way though makes for less entertaining reports.
I love how this scene inverts the "evil admiral" trope. Imagine some Admiral had shown up like this on the Enterprise-D, only we don't have to because Pressman, Jameson and Kennelly pretty much did. When Picard was in Shaw's shoes, we absolutely were on his side
Indeed. And he knows that Picard and Riker have a LONG history of getting into life or death messes. And so, because Shaw has a keen interest in protecting his crew, and knowing he can't technically forbid Picard and Riker from coming aboard, he decides to be as inhospitable and as much of a jerk as possible in hopes they'd leave before bringing hell down on his crew. He did not get his wish. Lol. I can't blame Shaw at all though for trying.
Absolutely. Next Gen never really did that. They subverted expectations with Captain Jellico as well. He could’ve been a reckless captain that the Enterprise crew had to subdue in order to stop a war or something but instead he shows that there’s simply more than one way to doing the right thing.
@@thewalliest3956 as youngsters, we think Jellico is a jerk. As we got older, we understood that Jellico had an important job to do, and he didn't have the time to make pleasantries with the crew. The stakes were very high, many lives were on the line, and stuff just had to get done.
"I'm really sorry fellas, I love you, I DO. I love reading about your wildly exciting and equally irresponsible adventures" The sheer insincerity and sarcasm with which he delivered that line makes me laugh every time.
He is awesome. Love the guy.
Well, he is not wrong😂
At this moment.....Wolf 359.
Picard: Make it so!
Shaw: Make it NO!
The clue as to why Shaw is a D-bag is in the end titles. He's a survivor of Wolf 359 and he's sitting across from the man who albeit recovered from being assimilated probably killed all of Shaw's crewmates and destroyed the ship he was on. When he said 'former ex Borg' his voice cracked a little. he's still got trauma from that.
Like Sisko initially then? Though Shaw showed more finesse at shutting Picard down (likely also due to Picard not having any real power atm).
This comment aged well
Yes, Shaw was an asshole, but you couldn't hate him because he was _right!_ And he was also, somehow, simultaneously charming. A great performance by Todd Stashwick.
I liked Trekyard’s read on this : imagine in TNG some old admiral and captain came aboard and started making shifty requests
While not exactly the buddy heist going on with Picard and Riker, the Pegasus comes to mind.
@@nerv007Beat me to it!
what did they expect? its his ship, his orders. sure he doesnt follow their wild and stupid ideas lol
back in the day, picard NEVER would change course for old friends on board having weird ideas about whatever telling him to go somewhere else and ignoring his orders.
so captian shaw is totally right on this matter here.
especially since shaw isn't friends with them. he has no obligations.
;-) You just described the plot of The Chase, the episode where Picard indulges his old archeology professor, ignores orders and takes the ship to help the man complete what seems like a futile quest.
@@Norvo82 I had this episode in mind too. Still picard told his professor friend a million times in the beginning, that he cant come with him and he has orders to follow. just when the professors ship is attacked and he called for help, picard answered this call.
I wouldnt say it was from start on the same, a bit close
Shaw is already my favourite!
Btw. His tone may be rude but he is absolutely right. Don't know what the people are complaining about...?
PS: Greating acting performance!
People complained because a side character dared to deny Picard the holy grail his wish, with truth and logic no less.
He is wrong.
Don't we need a spinn off with this fine Captain!?? He's gold!
SHAW IS A TOTAL BEAST. ONE OF MY FAVS...BEN SISCO RULES THOUGH
Rewatching this scene after ep 4. It means so much more now. Give Todd Stashwick a show of his own!
Captain Shaw is so awesome.
Shaw figured out right away that Riker and Picard where trying to bullshit him and stonewalled it like a champ.
What a bastard. I love him.
One of the persisting fan theories is that the Blue Gill parasites from the TNG episode Conspiracy are the big bads in season 3 of Picard. If Captain Shaw is one of them, it would explain his open distaste of Picard and Riker, they're the ones who thwarted his species' plans the first time around.
Another theory is that Shaw is a survivor of Wolf 359 and simply isn't a fan.
im sure lot of wolf 359 survivors weren't fans of picard.
@@cosmeticscameo8277 Benjamin Sisko was one of those.
Shaw's paranoid. That might mean something.
Shaw would be a bit young to have survived Wolf 359, surely.
@@downunderrob Well, plenty of families on board the 39 ships destroyed by the Borg. That's how Jake Sisko lost his mom after all.
Reminds me of Jellico and love it. That's right put Riker and Picard in check.
Jellico telling Troi to put on a uniform was awesome, lol. He was great.
Was gonna say this guy had vibes of Jellico.. a professional officer who follows orders from the appropriate chain of command. Hard to question his decisions on this really.
We only saw Jellico for 2 episodes on TNG "Chain of Command". We get to see Shaw for the entire season 3 of Picard. Unlike Jellico - Shaw admits he has faults. Shaw shows respect to Riker - something Jellico never did.
Capt. Shaw my type of captain would folow him anywhere ! such an iconic scene and refreshment in Star Trek universe , well done ! great cast !
Todd Stashwick was on fire this season… just like the USS Constance!
Too soon?
Stashwick is so freaking good.
3:20 this makes so much more sense after watching episode 4.
Happy Trail Captain Liam Shaw, the most in your face Officer of this generation or any other.
Picard may be retired but, someone of his significance, could use his influence when Shaw comes up for promotion to Admiral, positive or negative.
Maybe, but Captain Shaw could make a stink out of that.......
Possibly, but Shaw could also report Picard to the Admirals over Shaw.
I like Shaw obliterate picard and riker in humiliating way... hahaha so fun!
picard would've done the same if a retired admiral and a captain with no command tried to conspire wit riker on the ENT-D
Captain Shaw was a breath of fresh air! I knew they’d kill him off. What a waste.
Love Shaw........ needs is own show
"Oh, Captain Shaw. Type of true love kept under. Could thy brigade with full cascade quench my true love I wonder...."
Shaw is a legend. Loved his character
"I have orders that come down from ACTUAL officers..."
I like Shaw. I find his arrogance almost amusing.
Shaw is written to be unlikable which is fine. He's not a fan of Picard or Riker and has no qualms putting either man in his place. When Picard pulls the rank move, Shaw hits back that he's retired and when Riker tries to flex, Shaw reminds him he's without a command (despite holding equal rank)
Let's be real: Picard and Riker were wanting to use the Titan and its crew whilst keeping Shaw in the dark and leading them all into a potentially dangerous situation. Not cool. Shaw's obligation is to his ship, not two guys looking for a former colleague and friend.
The more I think about, the less please I am about this plot because it shows how ill prepared Picard and Riker are and how half-baked their plan is. Surely with their influence and pull, they could have found other people to help them.
Shaw is what some people like to say toxic.
Well said. Shaw isn't wrong here, Riker and Picard are. Bad writing for their characters, frankly. I could be wrong but I think we saw how Geordi has his own command in the previews for the season...why not ask him for help? Why try to enlist the help of a man who Riker admits before they ever get onboard will not be on their side, and ask him to do something against direct orders placing his career in jeopardy and possibly his ship and crew as well? This was a crap plan before they even started.
If i would be a Starfleet captain, and Riker and Picard needed a ship they would have got my full support. Shaw is propably a Wolf 359 survivor.
Shaw is a pussy. He couldn't begin to fill the shoes of either Picard or Riker on a good day!
He's the reason why Starfleet has been infiltrated by the Romulans in Season 1 of Picard. LOL
@@MMMMMMMMMM857 it's to show that starfleet is huge and not everyone is a picard/riker fan.
I noticed that Shaw addresses his First Officer as Hansen here. Annika Hansen was the birth name of Seven of Nine. I was wondering if someone was going to use it.
Shaw is like the Jellico of Star Trek: Picard.
I liked Jellico...
@@GabeBlackBut I don't like Shaw...
@@Yaapo I like Shaw, he has integrity and doesn't like being lied to, which is what Picard and Riker did from the moment they set foot on Titan. Picard would never have stood for anyone else doing that to him when he was Captain.
@@GeoffBlackmore I agree, but his attitude in general is unworthy of a Starfleet captain.
@@Yaapo Here is the thing, I didn't care for the borg comments but I can totally understand where he is coming from. One of the trek channels said that Shaw was dead naming Seven, its totally not the same thing. The borg were a War Crime and biblical plague all wrapped into one and to even think of keeping something that is not vital to keep you going and it being a label from your former slave/solider status? I don't like it but I understand the bias. To love is better but we are humans and our traumas make us who we are just as much as our philosophy. It's always in the back of head waiting to lash out when we are confronted with it. Your bias against people that have wronged you in the past or people you know. Kirk did this in the 6th movie in the scene when Spock volunteered them for the Klingon peace mission. The cinematography of the scene is powerful.
Shaw is a captain of a ship and is responsible for the lives of 500 people. Guy likes order and decides how the ship is run by his command style. Picard was the same way in episode one of TNG, he didn't want kids on his ship and wanted his crew to do stuff his way. Shaw has these two guys that want something and their story isn't adding up. They have been promoted from an last minute annoyance to a possible threat to his ship and crew. The more he hears the less he likes. He lashes out.
Every captain in trek is guilty of letting their bias get the better of them and lashing out. I can forgive Shaw if he grows from this. He needs a little chaos in his life. I hope they don't just kill the guy off that would be cheap and unworthy of treks theme of over coming our differences and working together to achieve a goal.
Except Jellico! Damn man was a saint for the shit he had to put up with! XD
I like the part when he says ‘no’
I think we need more shaw we don't know for sure he's Dead so lets bring him back
I hated that that Captain Shaw got killed because I thought that a spin off with him could've been made. Think about it a by the book bureacratic Starfleet Captain who find himself under extraordinary circumstances and is forced to bend the rules to complete the mission.
Shaw will save the day somehow
There's putting them in check because you dislike them or think they are up to something, and then there is dishonoring rank and manners, which is something Star Fleet has always held as a high standard. There has to be more to how he acted and why.
1.) he thinks picard and riker are fossils
2.) picard thought of spock as cowboy diplomacy, shaw thinks of picard as cowboy diplomacy
3.) he suspects they're up to something when picard slipped up with ds4
4.) shows shaw is a by the book officer he is not going disregard the itinerary that was planned out for them. he will execute orders to the letter
5.) he's a wolf 359 survivor
6.) he's probably a infested terran with the conspiracy parasite
@@cosmeticscameo8277 6 is my guess since it duplicates the actions from the captain in the old TNG episode.
@@cosmeticscameo8277 A bit of 5 but, in this scene, mostly 3.
Riker and Picard disrespected Shaw by trying to bullshit him and he saw through it. They came aboard his ship uninvited and effectively tried to play him for a fool. Not much in the way of manners or courtesy there. They didn't show him any respect so maybe he feels he doesn't owe them any.
Picard has been credited with “saving the Federation” many times, but the truth is, he was a fucking moron who repeatedly endangered the Federation and murdered thousands at Wolf 359. Captain Shaw simply sees through the bullshit and isn’t dancing around his feelings. He had every reason to be both suspicious and disrespectful to Picard.
Episode 1: "You will find....our hull intact".
Episode 2: "....tore a hole in our hull".
Yeah no thanks to the two legends lol
He does come across as kind of a smug jackass, but over time and a well written character development, he actually becomes a smug, well-meaning jackass, and a capable commander who makes smart decisions and genuinely cares for the well-being of the people under his command, including Seven.
He's 100% right.
Me thinks there is a spin off coming 🎉😂👍🔥💯
Why would he have purged jazz from the Titan-A's computer? This is a completely different and new ship, just because it has the Luna class's legacy name doesn't mean they put the Luna class's computer core into the Constellation 3 class ship.
The way I read it, the ship is the original titan but heavily refitted, like hte movie Enterprsie was the TOS enterprise heavily refitted. Because if it weren't, then Riker would have no connection tho this ship at all.
UPDATE, someone else said there's concept art showing the nacelles, warp core and computer core being stransfered from the partially disassembled Titan and being integrated into the Partailly built Titan A, the image is on the memory alpha page for the Titan-A
@@Bazookatone1 Kirk had no connection to the Enterprise-B and yet was there at it's maiden flight. That's as close as a connection as they would need. Also when the Enterprise went from TV version to movie version and refit, the ships shape didn't change, just the technology and minor cosmetic differences. They didn't take the original Constitution class and turn it into a Excelsior class. Refits don't change the frame of the ship. The Luna class has a under slung nacelle system, is shorter than the Constitution 3 but 100 meters and a different saucer, engineering hull and nacelle layout. It's just that the writers don't know what a refit is. We don't refit frigates in the navy and all of a sudden have a aircraft carrier when done.
The designers envisioned that that this Titan was effectively made partially from recycling what was useable from the Luna class one into a new ship frame after Riker ran it into the ground. There’s concept art of the two ships in space dock, bits being removed from the original and put into the A. The computer core was one of them. A waste-not approach to building ships.
He’s a brilliant Captain.
Love this Shaw character
What I wouldn't give to see her pull out a smartphone and give Janeway a call right now. His ass would be toast. Especially if she didn't have her coffee yet. 😄
Seven is awesome.
Shaw protected his ship. Rank doesn't always go up
Perhaps a more interesting opening arc to get a ship would be either to steal one ala Star Trek 3 or you could have even still used seven and maybe brought in harry kim who was commanding a nova class vessel at this time in the alternate universe was he not?
He was a great character. To bad the writers kill him. I would love to watch a TV show of ST with him.
Shaw's character is such a tragedy. His ship was taken over against his will multiple times by his own people and dies because of it.
Forgive him. At some point a**hole became a substitute for charm.
Star Trek used to have bright colors. Now everyone sits in the dark sipping scotch and reflects on the tragedy of their lives.
Shaw is like Tony Stark. A loveable asshole and he's brilliant.
He said pay grade. I thought that money doesn't exist anymore.
Me too, but i guess we were both wrong 😅
I assumed that by the 25th century, "pay grade" is just a euphemism. Like when you say that someone's "scaping the bottom of the barrel", it doesn't mean there's an actual barrel involved...
Figure of speech.
Shaw possibly suspecting blue gill with them…..?
Star Trek: Shaw
Coming soon.
I miss Captain Shaw. He went before his time.
He says he prefers Malbec wine. But Malbec is one of the 5 varietals in red Bordeaux wine.
Right or otherwise, Shaw totally made this interaction extremely personal and actually NOT professional. The chip on his shoulder is bigger than a Borg cube (sorry, couldn't resist). NOT a trait you want in a captain.
But it definitely made for an entertaining scene.
I felt really bad for Seven. I have worked for people like this. I watched the clock a LOT ...
He is saying HANSEN not ensign
I HATED how they played evil music over this dialogue. Shaw was 100% in the right in this situation. Yes he was disrespecting Seven deadnaming her and his ptsd made him say that cruel jab at Picard, but Shaw was not a malicious adversary in this scene. He was protecting his ship from a retired admiral and former captain that had no business being on his ship in the first place!
I loved Picard season 2 and 3. Just wish their was more I’d love to see them take on Khan lol
Shaw talks about being about structure and duty yet he blatantly and unrepentantly steals this scene in front of two experienced superior officers.
Shaw clearly doesn’t like Picard. Im guessing some Wolf359 reference. Wouldn’t be the first. That said, I’m not a fan of Picard being retired and Riker not an admiral.
Best. "No". Ever. 👏👏👏👏
I don't watch Picard. I tried to like it and failed.
As someone with no context, I absolutely side with Shaw here.
just try from s03e01 there are callbacks to previous seasons but you can live without them. You must only know that Picard as a human died and now has a positronic body
A little Joaquin Phoenix laugh at running some coal through the engines
Why is he talking about "higher paygrade", is money not already banned for centuries??
someone above him.
Mans' desire for wealth and the accumulation thereof can never be banned.
"No" .....and so it begins. 😅
If I read this correctly the Titan has a captain that's happy to have an excellent ship in pristine condition. But he doesn't want to use it for anything. It's like driving around in a new or restored car afraid of getting it dirty or scratched. And it plays into the old trope that the senior officers of the Enterprise Classic or Next Generation are distinct and more noble than the typical Starfleet standard.
Those old cars are referred to as trailer queens. I think these three are about to get mud on the tires 😄
Or: and this is jsut a crazy theory. Destroying ships for bad reasons is not a good idea and has left more than one ship derelict when needed most. Oh yes, and a lot of dead crew that otherwise would not have been,
Picard cannot tell him what to do, he has superiors that he takes orders from, not a retired admiral, but don't worry he takes orders from this retired admiral the very next episode, so much for consistent writing, Picard seemingly can give orders whenever it is plot convenient for him to do so.
Five years, 36 missions .... yup, pretty much laid up in mothballs
@@isildur101 Oh you have no idea what you are talking about. isn't that adorable?
Man got so much hate but he was just doing his job.
I hate and love this new captain! The actor pulls off an amazing pretentious performance
I really don't think Picard can be called irresponsible. Janeway, sure, but not Picard. He always had the ship's best interests in mind.
I like saw
You really want to kick Shaw's ass for the attitude problem, but then you hear what happened to him at Wolf 359 and while you wouldn't condone his conduct, you can at least understand the reason why.
The first person in history to ever get assimilation tubuals in his sphincter 😄
Weren’t there any, oh I don’t know, warp capable shuttle craft or maybe a runabout there could’ve stolen a bit easier then a fully crewed perfectly operational new star ship? I know I know we would’ve missed out on all the awesomeness that is the Titan and Shaw but come on.
I love how needlessly bitchy Shaw comes off when criticizing Jazz. God, I love this man!
I thought money didnt exist in the 24th century, and humanity strive to vetter itself, so why would Shaw mention a pay grade? may be just using slang i know, and well he immediately grew suspicious with the Admiral's slip up, I would be the same, but I would not go as low as he did labelling two former members of the collective as a retort even when feeling backed into a corner,
Other than that I feel the Captain would grow on me, lets see how things go I guess
Is an expression. It means people of higher rank/power/influence over him.
From what I see so far in Picard is that humanity may be returning to its savage ways where power and influence is the new currency just as it is today.
Perhaps it was the conflict with the Borg or the Dominion War that just changed an idealistic society with so much promise into a cynical fearful one that seems to believe that a more military objective is preferable to the one of exploration, and discovery.
I wouldn't be too surprised if they brought back capital punishment to the judicial system of this new Federation or at least have Earth reincorporate it to punish its citizens who commit capital crimes.
Inside the Federation money doesn't exist overall but some planets inside Federation are still using some kind of currency, so Starfleet officers are paid so called Energy Credits that they can exchange into currency on planets where money is still existing or exchange it for outside of Federation currency. For example in DS9 there was a ATM machine that belonged to Quark that Starfleet officers and other races could use to exchange their money into Gold-Pressed Latinum.
Just a little nitpick but when he said pay grade I didn't know they get paid
Figure of speech.
Shaw is ok
If RedLetterMedia is somehow NOT an influence for Shaw's character, I'm seriously going to be disappointed! He just seems like a perfect hybrid of the cynicism of Mike and Rich with some Jay mixed in.
Wait, "pay grade"? Is that an idiom or have Federation economics changed since _First Contact_ ?
Just an idiom
I'm not against Shaw for his adherence to orders and being protective of his command. But requiring Seven to use a name she barely remembers and is clearly uncomfortable with, truly marks him as a d-bag. And he was needlessly being an ass to Picard and Riker long before they started acting all shifty.
Another commenter mentioned that Shaw was nearly killed by the Borg, so it makes sense.
Would the former ex-borg insult not be much worse against Seven than Picard ??
Also " former ex-borg " ? Isn't that twice the meaning of the word 🤔
I believe there would be a comma in there. As in "former, ex, borg". Granted I would have written it a bit more cleanly.
God forbid a starfleet captain not act like a trek fan or go joy riding with starfleet assets amirite?
LOL
2:11 No.
I'm a little disappointed with captain Shaw. I mean he's a bureaucrat who's more concern with obeying orders. And I understand that every starfleet captain isn't going to be like Picard, Kirk, Cisko, or Janeway but, Shaw could be developed enough to jumpstart another Star Trek series.
Officially hottest captain as well
I think Shaw should be brought back as a Q
Shaw plays his part very well to the ,enter and then the humiliation of bunk beds . That was a little much even for this new age jerk. All well what comes around goes around . Payback is a b####h.
this guy's a jerk, i bet he comes around after Picard and Riker save his ship
Potentially a jerk, but put yourself in his shoes. He’s gained this command of a honored ship and doesn’t want to rock the boat. Plus, Picard’s slip up that cause his suspicion to grow. I think you’re supposed to dislike him at this point, but come to like him eventually
That they put in danger? That's like being robbed and thanking the person who robbed you.
Is this Shaw the new jerk after Jellico?
Pay grade? I thought Star Fleet was money-free.
I think we are not supposed to like him, but I kind of do anyway. Plus he is hot af.
Shaw might be perfectly serviceable as a staff or base officer, but in the field I would expect him to be about as useful as hen poop on a pump handle. At best. He doesn't even know his role as Head of Table. If he has an issue with Picard and Riker, that's something to be resolved in his office, not at Captain's Table in front of his XO.
Shaw is clearly showing how much authority he has and what Riker's and Picard's limits are, as he clearly stated. That's why he's not following norms with dinner. No doubt Shaw researched what he could get away with before proceeding. Very by the book and arrogant as well, but knowledgeable nonetheless.
Picard is not use to hearing no...
considering he's a 4 star admiral (retired)
