    What a great way to turn a bug into something amazing. Who knows, maybe we will find in the future that there are more types of these unique objects in our universe and it turns out that these weird star-in-star objects are actually possible with a bunch more different types of stars?

    My head hurts at the concept. Biggest question I have is: what is preventing that neutron star from collapsing into a black hole? Surely there's enough mass for it to run into to break the degeneracy pressure of neutronium.

    • @backslash153
      @backslash153 4 года назад +29

      Alright so, according to Thorne & Zytkow's original publication, the neutron star and the inner layers of the giant are seperated by a thin (40 meters/130 feet) layer called "halo", which basically acts as "canopy" - energy created in and close to the halo acts as outward-facing radiation pressure, keeping most of the giant's matter away from the neutron star. In their initial model, the accretion rate of matter through the halo and onto the NS is only about 10^-8 solar masses per year, so even if the neutron star were only 0.1 solar masses away from the TOV-threshold (the mass at which a NS collapses into a black hole) it wouldn't actually reach it for another 10 million years - ten times higher than the estimated lifespan of TZOs, before their enevelope dissipates, forms an accretion disk, is accreted properly onto the neutron star and turns into a black hole.
      If the process would make the neutron star so massive to be only some tiny fraction of a solar mass away from the TOV threshold, chances are it would simply reach that during the migration into the supergiant and the Thorne-Zytkow-Object would collapse into a black hole before it ever truly formed.

    Playing Elite and getting to take a look at the planetary science section of AGU back in December really makes me want to go back and study astronomy. I was intimidated feeling like I needed a PhD to go anywhere in the field, but the universe is always giving us glimpses of things that are unimaginable. I love my field, but space seems to always be calling me.

    I wonder, if they cant separate the stars if they can instead change the star types so that they can be scientifically correct

    • @DreamskyDance
      @DreamskyDance 4 года назад +6

      That would be pretty cool in my opinion, even cooler than fixing the bug alltogether. And i think its more doable, probably the algorithm that created the galaxy remembers specific spots and relation to other spots where objects are, but objects itself on that spots are separately placed ( like changing the texture on something ). Just guessing basically, on the basis how i would do it if i was writing code for something akin to stellar forge from elite ( distances are important but type of object is not because neighbouring stars dont interact with eachother ), but i hope its something along those lines..XD
      Then again if everything is procedurally generated with some base guidelines and they dont have a way in the code to "select" a given object to change its type ( as star in this case ) but everything is just "as is" as stellar forge spat it out.. then nothing cant be done appart from running the simulation again and then you get somethign completely different.
