I once saw a photo of Andy with a beard. I really thought it was Barry at first. In an interview, Barry actually said that for him Andy was his twin brother. Both are also said to have been very similar in character. For example, Barry and Andy were crazy about tennis, which Robin and Maurice were never interested in.

This was when the Bee Gees were a five piece band. Colin Petersen (drums) and Vince Maloney (guitar) were friends of the Bee Gees during the time they lived in Australia. Robin Gibb primarily played a variety of keyboards, notably piano, organ and Mellotron on the Bee Gees album Odessa (1969); he also played acoustic guitar and organ on his debut solo album Robin's Reign (1970). But he never played live (that I know of) from the early 70s onwards.

@HarriBest Reactions --- Harri, Colin Peterson, the drummer, and Vince Melouney, the lead guitarist, were in fact officially part of the Bee Gees, from 1967 through 1969. Both were mates from Australia who were summoned early on in 1967 after the Brothers had arrived back in England and Robert Stigwood had signed them. Both Peterson and Melouney are pictured on the Gibbs' first albums, "Bee Gees' 1st," "Horizontal," and "Idea." The two musicians were also part of the Gibbs' fourth album, the massive "concept" LP, "Odessa," but were not pictured, as the album contained no photographs of the group, but simply a luxurious gatefold red velvet cover. But one can clearly hear both Colin Peterson's drumming and Vince Melouney's guitar playing on that album. Peterson left the group in 1969. Vince Melouney left the Bee Gees after his final concert with them on December 1, 1969.
You had asked if the Bee Gees recorded every song that they wrote... Well, the answer would technically be "No," but even most songs which they wrote and never officially released as recordings were recorded by them at least as demos, as that was their preferred method of songwriting, rather than, say, jotting down sheet music, as they were not proficient at reading and writing musical notation. But even their elaborate and glorious string and horn arrangements, which were written early on by their Musical Director, the great Bill Shepherd, were often generated by ideas in the form of humming and strumming, by Barry, Robin and Maurice themselves. This was a practice they continued pretty much to the end.
As to the obverse question, "Did the Bee Gees' only record their own compositions?" the answer would be "primarily." Early on in Australia, when they were first testing their songwriting wings, they also did record a number of compositions written by others. And once, early in their international career, they recorded a song written by their lead guitarist, Vince Melouney, called "Such a Shame." It appeared on the U.K. version of the album, "Idea," but was replaced with "I've Gotta Get a Message to You," on the American release. Later on the Gibbs were involved in movies and other projects (notably the "Sgt. Pepper" movie), where they recorded some Beatles songs, and they also in 1995 recorded the Shirelles' 1964 hit "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin.

There is an affectation in both Barry and Robin's voices that I can not get enough of. It is on display in this magical song. So, at times, their voices sound like they are in an echo chamber or a "reverb effect". It is natural to their voices and not a tech made thing. No! Take a look at their Aussie-times from 1960 up to 1966, with 'Spicks And Specks' at the end, going to Nr. 1 in Australia. 'New York Mining Desaster 1941', (leadvocals together with Robin), 'To Love Somebody', 'World' (again leads together with Rob) and on many tracks, to hear on the albums, so these were only the singles. The sharing of leadvocals between Barry and Robin is so great. Makes them unbeatable, so Maurice always came in with tremendous feeling for a perfect three-part-harmony.

They WERE a 5 piece band then. Colin Peterson on drums and Vince Melouney on lead guitar. When they were young Robin played piano, dad Hugh on drums, Barry guitar and Maurice bass. On his own early LP's (Robin's Reign and Sing Slowly Sisters) Robin played piano, accordion, organ and mellotron as well as on some Bee Gees songs (mellotron on "World" for example). They're miming it here but believe the vocals are live. They hated to lip synch. I enjoy Robin's cheeky smile at the start. Their dad always said "Tell Robin to smile!"

While Barry Gibb does an outstanding performance on this song, it was also sung live by Andy Gibb. I don't know why but I prefer Andy's version. He even looked so much like Barry with a light beard. That was the only time I saw him with one. Either way, they each sing "Words" beautifully. Thanks for the reaction. You are always a joy to watch.

YES!!! He needs to react to Andy’s version of words!!!! It’s one of the few times you will see Andy with a beard. He’s wearing a tux and looks sooooo much like Barry.

The original artist is always the best....Andy did a good job but he slowed it down too much.....just like Elvis.....he sped it up and Elvis butchered "Words"

I believe that is Robin's twin brother playing the piano.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the early BeeGees is so beautiful. I much prefer it over the disco era.

And this was pre-falsetto days for them so another version of the Bee Gees. Massachusetts is another good one from this era that shows their talents. It's fun seeing them in the early days too in how they looked and dressed, etc. So enjoy all eras of the Bee Gees...Andy looks like a younger Barry. And notice no one is plugged in either so just for a TV show, voice over, with added musicians on the side. And this is more of a solo without backup of the twins so not the normal. There are songs out there from Robin but didn't see many from Maurice.

My favorite from Mo is "Above and Beyond". "Hold her in your hand" is good too.

Note Robin playing the piano. Maurice is on guitar. People forget Robin, too, was a musician. Robin played guitar on Sgt Pepper's, film. And a few of their early songs.

Colleen Peterson-drums, Vince Melone -guitar; they were part of the 60’s Bee Gees (they were a couple of their Aussie friends). Colleen was fired and replaced and eventually Vince wanted to do other things snd he left. Later in the 70’s Alan Kendall-guitar ( he was with them up through the 2000’s) Barry joked that he has been a Bee Gee longer then all the brothers! Blu Weaver on Keyboards and synth., I forget the drummers name off the top of my head. But once they landed back in Britton they wanted to have a band and had one since.

Collin Peterson, drummer in the sixties, followed by Geoff Bridgford in the early seventies and then Dennis Bryon, from 1973 up to 1979. In 1975, Dennis, who played formerly in a band, called Amen Corner, involved his bandmate from that time, Blue Weaver, who's been arround then with Mott The Hoople, to talk with the Gibb-bros. And he did, they met on the Isle Of Man and Blue, who came in with no ambitions to be member of the Bee Gees band, so he saw himself more as a Rock'n Roller, was fascinated from the familiar atmosphere he's been included at once. The rest is musical history.

This is the Bee Gees at their finest. In the 60's . In interviews Barry states that the 60's was their 1st fame. Then the late 70's after Saturday Night Fever came out that was known as their 2nd fame. I preferred their 60's hits much better than their disco era hits.

They were a five-piece ban earlier in their career. I'm not sure when.
