He really should've done that. That whole scheme of trying to convince people without showing the full truth completely fucked him. Look at his channel now, it's fucking dead.
While that would be ideal, often RUclipsrs fan bases are extremely cruel or narcissistic. They completely ignore or even make fun of any sort of bad thing that happens to a RUclipsr but if something good happens they treat it as if they did all the hard work. I mean, trust is something you give while knowing you can be betrayed. If you have plans on how to deal with it it's alright, the issue is really about _blind_ trust, which is more common than we often realize. That said, the moment a ytber or other content creator does this I'm jumping ship.
It's always funny seeing RUclipsrs pretend like we have that much invested in their continued operations. I've had dozens of "favorite channels" that stopped making content. The reaction is always "man, that sucks" and then two weeks later I'm watching other content and have completely forgotten.
It's insane that this happened on a perfectly normal, well-respected documentary channel. I'm so used to hearing about this stuff from 'lifestyle influencers' or 'money gurus' who were clearly grifters from day 1. It's sobering to realize that anyone you trust could turn around and start trying to take advantage of you if you don't keep your guard up.
It's such a shame to see such a good channel like Disrupt go down this road. The sad part is, I feel like if he had just come out and been completely honest with fans of the channel and disclosed the part about being 500k in debt, people would have been willing to help.
who the fuck is 500k in personal debt? thats the same as saying "i am suddenly 1300lbs and they had to take out an exterior wall to bring a crane in to lift my fat ass out of the house"
He made a mistake and can still recover from it, I wouldn't say this warrants a full boycott/disconnect from Disrupt but I hope Jak comes to his senses.
I really hope he comes forwards from this and continues to create content. I'm sure that through the channel revenue he will be able to pay off his debt eventually.
This whole Disrupt thing was a sucker punch in the gut. I thought that the guy that makes that type of content would be wise enough to not fall into that debt.

The salient question is "what is Disrupt's annual ad revenue?" I couldn't get to Disrupt's financials, so here's a best-case look at revenue. Fifty videos have been posted since July 20, 2021. These videos got 35 million views (I counted) and averaged 702,000 views per video. Twelve videos got a million or more views. If we assume Disrupt received the top $8-per-1,000 views ad rate (and a much lower rate might have been received) the channel grossed $281,000 over the past 52 weeks. This means Disrupt values itself at 38-times its ad revenue, which is beyond absurd. Sponsorships bring in additional money but couldn't possibly justify the asking price. THIS IS CLEARLY A SCAM.
Just checked social blade, says per month he's earning between €408 - €6.5K and yearly between €4.9K - €78.3K Even without the debt stuff this seems like a scam
I found their content high quality, but really sloppily organized to the point many people watching couldn't follow along easily. This is not a loss to me, but i can see how people appreciated the channel's work
Right? I liked some of their videos but if you ignore the "high quality" aspect of the animations and transitions... a lot of stuff is pretty hectic and piled up, at least imo
There's also been some really stupid mistakes they've made like calling Java and JavaScript the same thing that makes you doubt the quality of the research they've done or how much they actually understand what they're talking about

Couldn't imagine "investing" in a RUclips channel. I don't mind donating a small amount depending who it is but if it's an investment I would rather put that money into an actual company that'll be around long term.
There are other folks doing equity crowdfunding with similar terms. It's a lot of scams and coke fueled delusions though. An acquaintance tried to launch his events company through one and gave his company a 500k valuation with no assets, brand recognition, or experience. Like why not just launch a GoFundMe?

The worst part is, this channel was actually pretty solid.. and if it happens to go belly up we lose a set of really great content creators in the process...
He is promising a percent of net profits in a company where he would still be majority shareholder. He decides about costs. So essentially he decides how much money people will get through their dividend. High probability he will inflate his own costs so there is little left to share with his investors.

Honestly, i always loved distrupt. Its those channels that its uniquely amazing from anything around. amazing storytelling, stories easy to indulge in, fun to binge watch, etc... So seeing this exact channel go this absolute wrong path. its absolutely dissapointing. Pretty saddening actually...
The fact that it is via a crowdfunding platform should be a red flag all on its own. When you're talking percentages and shares, I feel like it has to be a lot more organized, a lot more specific & personalized...and Transparent! Where is the paperwork...and lawyers?! When our bank went public on the stock market, they sold shares and my parents bought some...they have so much paperwork, telling them everything they would possibly need to know. What exactly they bought, how much they bought, what they can do with it, etc. I know this is a RUclips channel and not Wall Street, but when you use the same terminology, I expect the same standards.
I was so baited out when I saw that video, glad to see someone cover this and explore the sketch. Disrupt has ups n downs. Their video on Havana Syndrome was terribly researched and has only contributed to the massively misunderstood and misrepresented reality
He could have actually raised that money by selling an online course to his audience. It doesn't have to be shady. Just honest value that will benefit his audience is enough. 1. Research skills 2. Growing a RUclips channel 3. Managing a RUclips team There are lots of online content he could have produced and marketed to his audience to get that money but he didn't. That tells me he's a bad business man all round. He's lucky to have that partner.
It's always best to poop more than you eat so you don't get fat. I poop 2x each meal and also urinate when needed. My motto is eat ass, smoke poop and get laid. Preferably with a non relative 💩👌🤑
When you have 500k in debt you don't have time to spend a year crafting an online course that MIGHT generate some revenue lol. I don't condone what he did but from that statement alone I can tell you're not qualified to criticize anyone's business skills.
Never trust anyone. Disrupt's videos often have holes in their research like the terrible one on Havana Syndrome which lacks any real understanding of the situation.
At current levels it would take over 444 years to recoup any investment ($100 would pay $0.225/year). And your ownership would be further diluted if he raises more funding. That is NOT an investment, it’s a donation. This guy clearly knows nothing about business or finance if he honestly thought this was a good idea to try.
I’m used to seeing RUclips drama videos about channels I’m not subscribed to or ever even heard of before so I honestly had a double take to see something like this on a channel I’m actually subscribed to and enjoy the content of (which is especially ironic considering the content that channel makes)
I unsubbed. His content goes deep into topics that aren't the easiest to research by just anyone. That means as a viewer you're trusting that his research is above board. The trust is the lynch pin, IMHO, and he's just demonstrated his ability to lay out the FACTS is SKETCHY at best.

Because google does not pay dividends. Obviously investing in a youtube channel with that bogus of a valuation is a terrible move, but in a more realistic scenario that would be the argument.
Disrupt is a good channel that I've enjoyed a lot, and it was jarring seeing the video pitching this "investment" and even stranger now seeing you cover it. It smelled fishy right away and there were plenty of comments from fans saying the same. It was also disappointing hearing him say the "metaverse" was the future of the "brand".
I loved this channel before all this bs…. Really a shame he decided to go this route instead of a patreon or something :// I also cannot believe he’s already raised that much $$. It’s so obviously a terrible investment.
this is incredibly upsetting, i love(d) the Disrupt channel and i expected Jack to be much more truthful with his pitch. I will continue to watch their content because it is interesting but I will not be investing anything at this moment or possibly ever.
I remember Faze Clan went "Public" recently and their stocks crashed immediately. In the "attention" market, it's the wild wild west, and too many people burn out way too quick.
I don't like the idea of fan ownership because it requires that these channels grow at a very high rate to give the fans a good ROI. This is very hard. Also, fans will most likely be paid last. The ones who came first or gave the most money will get the most money.
There's something really weird I've noticed about disrupts videos, there's always a ton of comments that have nothing to do with the video subject but simply say things like "The production quality of this channel is amazing, I can't believe this is free!" This attempt to "sell" the channel makes me think that a big amount of comments are fake profiles made to try to falsely inflate the channels perception as something more valuable than what it is, something worth buying

I couldn't get to Disrupt's financials, so here's a best-case look at revenue.
