Tom Cruise was so good in this movie, truly one of his best. People tend to forget that there is an excellent actor behind his blockbuster action Hollywood star persona.
A lot of people must have thought after watching this big "chewing up the scenery" performance that Tom Cruise is just a little crazy, but he's actually a great actor and makes great choices for his characters. He decided Jerry would be this combination of a slick and sharky agent and also this eccentric, unsure, well intentioned guy, and he shifts from the former to the latter over the course of the movie. For the biggest movie star he's surprisingly different in each movie.
Love this movie. Renee Zellweger is so effervescent in this and has good chemistry with Cruise here. The whole movie is so quotable and memorable. I’ve probably seen this twenty times.
@@mojoshivers Oh yeah, good one. That movie rented really well way back when I worked in a video store. Empire Records too. She sucked in Appaloosa though.
"SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!" Fun Fact: The story for this movie was reportedly based on real-life Orange County agent Leigh Steinberg (who makes a cameo in this movie as Troy Aikman's agent, which he was in real life). Steinberg's ex-partner David Dunn tried to lure away many of Steinberg's clients, just as Jay Mohr's Bob Sugar does in this movie. Another Fun Fact: Jonathan Lipnicki showed up on the set one day telling everyone that "the human head weighs eight pounds". Writer, produce and director Cameron Crowe liked it so much he wrote it into the script. Also, Regina King was really pregnant during the filming of this movie.
Regina King is magic! She was in this movie as Cuba gooding Jr won an Oscar and the same with Jamie Foxx as he won an Oscar with Ray (about Ray Charles) She was great in the Big Bang Theory as the HR director too lol.
One of my favorite Tom Cruise movies. So many iconic lines! "Show me the money"!! "Help me help you"!The kid is adorable. "Did you know the human head weighs ten pounds"? Lol 😆 Of course, "You had me at hello". ❤ RIP Kelly Preston.
"Oh, I need justice." 20 years later, the NFL made mock "where are they now?" documentaries about Jerry Cushman and Rod Tidwell. Cushman dropped out of the NFL after only four years due to a severe, crippling case of... athlete's foot. His father is on the documentary, talking about how heartbroken he was, because the Cushmans have always been "stronger than oak."
This one stands the test of time. It's also a reminder of just how great Cruise is as an actor -- not just a "movie star." I hope to see him return to this kind of work one day.
1996 was absolutely Tom Cruise at his zenith. He was only 34, in his physical prime and had two major box office hits in Mission Impossible...which became his signature franchise, and Jerry Maguire which was one of the most quoted movies of the 1990's and earned him an Oscar nod. Very few actors have had a year as good as Tom Cruise had in 1996.
The film contrasts Rod, a guy with an awesome functional personal life but his career is in trouble and Jerry who was on top of the world but his personal life was awful. Rod provided a blueprint for what Jerry's life could be and Jerry helped show Rod what his professional life could be
"Awful" is too strong a word to apply to Jerry especially to his entire personal life. He has a lot of great friendships, and they are part of his personal life. Also, his relationship with his fiance was actually a positive force in his life until he lost the star NFL client. Jerry definitely showed something to Rod, but Rod only advised Jerry to let the girl go if he did not love her. He never gave Jerry a blueprint for how to win her back. Jerry changed because Dorothy showed him what it was like without her and it robbed him from enjoying his new success. She completed him, not Rod.
@@chunkyMunky329Nah Jerry definitely realized his flaws when all the cameras were on Rod and all Rod was worried about was talking to his wife on the phone. Nothing else
@@condorgaming4000 That's not how psychology works. If Jerry's wife was at his house, waiting for him, he would not have had that realization. He would have just continued in his old ways. Its the combination of losing her, and then seeing a reflection of what he has lost that brought him back to her. And so, if he had not seen this with Rod, something else would have brought him to the same realization. His woman started a chain reaction that had inevitability.

Tom Cruise's character is based on the real life agent Leigh Steinberg. He's lived a life with a lot of highs and lows. One of his current clients is Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes.
The fiancee was played by Kelly Preston. She was married to John Travolta for many years but passed away in 2020. She had a small role in Christine near the start. She was the cheerleader that had the hots for Dennis, Arnie's cool (only) friend. Edit-had to get the facts right.
I have been a huge Tom Cruise fan since I was 14 and saw Risky Business in the theater. He always brings 200% to every role he plays. This one especially is great, because it is just a great story, with a great cast, and lots of heart.
People tend to forget that he is the face and pretty much leader of a CULT. I've never been a big Tom Cruise fan and I remember thinking this wasn't a good enough movie as I was watching it that first time (my sudden crush on Renee Zellweger notwithstanding), but that "You complete me" speech at the very end capped by "You had me at hello" sure did pack a wallop!
25 years after first seeing Jerry Maguire it is still one of my favourite Rom-Coms of all time. Set in the Football world is what peaked my interest, but the incredible acting and writing made me love this movie.
Yes. This is a very, very good movie. Cameron Crowes best. Cuba Gooding Jr's, Oscar speech was almost the same as the ending in this movie. He won for best supporting actor. They did do some very good movies in the 1990's and the 80's - it's almost unbelievable. An early Tom Cruise movie that's fun is "Risky Business" (1983) - (It has very good music). Thanks for reacting.
Cameron Crowe directed his autobiographical picture Almost Famous, which is what he won his Academy Award for. He also wrote Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Say Anything, and Singles.
I guess you all like romcoms. I cracked up when Cassie & Carly got into position when Jerry made his speech to get back together. Then they started coaching him! 😂😂 loved your reaction. Definitely experts on this genre!
One of my all-time favorite movies. So quotable. Memorable scenes and dialogue. Tom Cruise acting in this is top notch. Renee' is gorgeous and funny. Cuba Gooding, fantastic. And the kid? One of the best performances for a small child, and super cute.

I’m so glad you two reacted to this movie. It was great to revisit it. Such a fun movie. I’ve always enjoyed the quirky chemistry between Tom cruise and Renee Zellweger. And I loved seeing Kelly Preston. Rest In Peace. Kelly was fantastic in “For Love Of The Game” with Kevin Costner. That’s a movie you two should watch if you haven’t already.
It's great how the sports half of this movie has "show me the money" and the romance half has "you had me at hello". Either of those two lines/scenes could have carried either storyline for a standalone two-hour movie, I'm not claiming Jerry Maguire is an all-time great but it delivers twice when some movies struggle to deliver once.
You should watch The Outsiders it has Tom Cruise as well as Patrick Swayze and Medio Estevez Ralph Macchio,, it's from the '80s and it's about teenage youth in Oklahoma City in the 1950s and 60s
I'm glad that at least a few people on RUclips are watching such great classics again. Many people only watch the standard films that everyone knows, but such films are becoming more and more forgotten.
Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, and Leonardo Dicaprio are in a league of their own. And at this point they're basically the last people left at the party. Movies like this show the difference between actors and movie stars.
My favorite romcom and yeah, mid-nineties Tom is 🤌🏼😍🔥. The pacing feels fast, the first time you watch it, but it shows Rod playing games over the course of the season in between their love story so you can get a feel of timeframes. Check Tom out in Cocktail it’s another fun love story.
Love this film so much and I loved watching it with you! With Say Anything, Almost Famous, and this film I absolutely love seeing Cameron Crowe films on this channel! I think the vibe, style, humor, romance, and heart of his films is perfect for both of you. I hope there will be more on the channel! There's Vanilla Sky (also with Tom Cruise), We Bought A Zoo, Elizabethtown, Singles, Aloha, and Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Crowe didn't direct that last one but he wrote it.
Hi as always love your reactions. Just got to mention that was Bob Dylan's " Shelter from the Storm" at the end.. Like she's giving him shelter..in the harsh world of his job.. The song itself is pretty deep (duh..right.. it's Dylan)but it fits perfectly for this movie.✌
I’ll never forget the first time I watched this movie and that song came on at the end! I still listen to the movie version (it was previously unreleased) all the time. It’s the PERFECT song for this movie, so beyond great!
This movie barks up your tree. Renee Zellweger is beautiful. The women in the "you had me at hello." scene were not told what was going to happen. Their reactions were genuine. To see a very young Tom Cruise, watch Taps with George C. Scott. They did not try to make him taller. A great Renee Zellweger movie is Chicago with Catherine Zeta-Jones and Queen Latifah. Since you like romantic comedies, watch Bedazzled with Brendan Frazier and Kelly Labrock (Weird Science).
Seriously. Carly needs to like be a detective in real life. She's incredibly intuitive and always guesses what's going to happen before it happens. Crazy.
@@EdDunkle I think this could be an Amazon or Netflix series for sure. Who left the toilet seat up? Who left the back gate open? Who murdered the victim in the vestry? @@nsasupporter7557 Yeah but THE REF is literally underrated. It was not even close to a box office hit, and no one thinks to put it in a Top 10, let alone Top 20 list of best Christmas movies. So you're unfortunately very wrong here. THE REF **is** underrated. You're crying over an incorrect assertion.
@@nsasupporter7557 But if it's true, it's true. You have to say what's true and then others can react accordingly. The quarterback in the beginning is Jerry O'Connell. He played Verne, the fat friend in Stand By Me. I know, right? My mom couldn't believe it either when I told her.
It's always enthusiasm overload when you two get together and I love it. Something for your own time (as in don't 'work' on it as an official posting) is a beauty of an old-school rom-com directed by the sister, Bonnie Hunt, called Return To me (2000) with Minnie Driver and David Duchovny and a whole lotta warmth and charmingness.
Saw this movie when it came out. There was an interview, and regarding the scene where Kelly Preston (the ex-fiancé) was saying she doesn’t cry at movies or gush over babies, basically this was the exact opposite of her real-life personality!
My favorite reactions are the movies that you would not have picked to watch yourself but end up loving. Rocky, The Natural, Jerry Mcquire, It's a wonderful life. The movies that you end up loving that you discover on the channel are the best.
This is such a great movie. I'm not the biggest Tom Cruise fan (I like the movies, but he can be a bit off putting in some movies) ... in my opinion this is his best movie in terms of acting. He doesn't get to fall back on some crazy stunt or action sequence. This is pure dialogue and character progression and he nails it. There are times when the movie goes from 0 to 60 in the emotional department, but it also plays into their personalities. Fantastic movie pick.
While this genre of film really seems right up her alley, I think the issue is just the age of the film and how old Cassie is. I saw it in college, but this film is 26 years old. If she wasn't even a teenager when it came out, she probably wouldn't have seen it in the theater and may just never have gotten around to watching older movies.
Yeah that is what I was thinking too. Right up her alley. I was born in 93 didn't see it opening night. LOL. Probably around 10 or so when i saw it. definitely one she will like and probably see again in her life. How old is Cassie and her sister? Cassie seems a little older for sure.
When Jerry started his speech in the living room at the end in front of the ex-wives, they both set up in their chair. Like oh, I’m ready to hear this shit.
Cameron Crowe also directed Almost Famous, which is one of my favorite movies and also one of my favorites of your reaction videos! More music flicks would be welcomed and enjoyed. And I just love the fact that Jerry Cantrell of Alice In Chains has a cameo as the Copy-shop guy. EDIT: As the replies demonstrate a reaction to "Singles" would be great....that one seems like it would be right up your alley, a great cast and great music. And after that, "High Fidelity" with John Cusack & Jack Black!
Love the movie. Loved the reaction. I really appreciated the comment you answered back to my superchat. It made my day. Thank you for being the great person you are.

Was he good in Risky Business? Wasn't that his first role?
People tend to forget that he is the face and pretty much leader of a CULT. F his acting, when his 'church' tears apart families, tries to convert homosexuals and decides to try rape and abuse within its church and not the law. Has no contact with his CHILD from his ex wife Katie Holmes who had to FLEE under Toms awareness to break out, now he wont see his now teen daughter because she is a suppressive person, aka not in the church. But go off! He had u at hello!
You have no idea how much I love this movie! Its so tragically underrated
Tom was never better than this movie..acting wise..Born on the Fourth of July..was his best acting..this was his best romantic movie..
13:42 To be a single mother and trust someone at their WORST and is desperate is just... unbelievably COURAGEOUS
We Bought a Zoo is surprisingly good.
This is *the* role that made me fall in love with Renee. And Bonnie Hunt kills it as her sister.
Is it just me, or could Carly and Renee Zellweger be twins?
One of my all-time favorite movies. So quotable. Memorable scenes and dialogue. Tom Cruise acting in this is top notch. Renee' is gorgeous and funny. Cuba Gooding, fantastic. And the kid? One of the best performances for a small child, and super cute.
Love this movie man. Tom Cruise has a stupidly good career. So versatile and with so many memorable films and roles...just a legend.

Renee was MIA there for a while. Then came back and immediately won an Oscar. Lol.
_Love_ how you even hide behind your blanket for romcoms. 😂 Amazing reaction.
RIP Kelly Preston who played the fiance Avery. She was John Travolta's wife who died of breast cancer in 2020 at only 57 years old.
That's one of the few perfect films that has such a satisfying ending.
Suggest you watch more of Renee Zellwinger in "Cold Mountain" and Cubi Gooding in "As Good as it Gets."
The wedding part also confused me. It was too fast but also in the way it was edited. Felt like it should have a couple more scenes in between that.
We Bought a Zoo!! I forgot about that one, great popcorn flick.
My favorite memory of watching Jerry Maguire was the summer it came out on VHS. I think I watched it almost everyday that summer. I was a weird kid.
@@jessicadavis8865
Love Dylan & people that appreciate his music✌
This movie has it's own vibe, created a new subgenre and is a masterpiece!
I’m amazed you both haven’t seen this movie at least a dozen times already. I certainly have! It’s a classic!🍿
One of the greatest movies ever, that song, that cast
Younger immature me: this chick flick is okay to like because it's got sports 😂😂😂
Crazy.
I think some reactors cheat a little bit
@@EdDunkle I think this could be an Amazon or Netflix series for sure.
Who left the toilet seat up?
Who left the back gate open?
Who murdered the victim in the vestry?
I'm english so there has to be a death within a religious building, I don't make the rules; thankfully I do remember the easier story prompts.
The boy was the VIP! He is more than adorable!
@Cassie The Ref starring Dennis Leary, Judy Davis and Kevin Spacey is an underrated gem of a Christmas set movie
The Ref is my favorite Christmas movie.
The Ref is currently in 'the middle' of the Xmas Movies poll. It's on Cassie's Radar, but probably not watched this year...
My FAVORITE Christmas movie! Great suggestion
@@nsasupporter7557 But if it's true, it's true. You have to say what's true and then others can react accordingly.
The movie, Clay Pigeons is an underrated movie and when describing it those are the first words out of my mouth. It's one of my favorite action/suspense movies with an all star cast and an great plot, great ending. Acting, directing and photography are excellent, and yet no one's ever heard of it. What phrase describes that better?
The quarterback in the beginning is Jerry O'Connell. He played Verne, the fat friend in Stand By Me. I know, right? My mom couldn't believe it either when I told her.
It's always enthusiasm overload when you two get together and I love it.
Something for your own time (as in don't 'work' on it as an official posting) is a beauty of an old-school rom-com directed by the sister, Bonnie Hunt, called Return To me (2000) with Minnie Driver and David Duchovny and a whole lotta warmth and charmingness.
Good choice and thanks. I had been thinking about that movie but couldn't remember the title and then forgot to look it up. lol
I love that movie! Doesn't hurt that I had a huge crush on David Duchovny at the time lol
this movie is a classic. might be my favorite Tom Cruise performance.
Saw this movie when it came out. There was an interview, and regarding the scene where Kelly Preston (the ex-fiancé) was saying she doesn’t cry at movies or gush over babies, basically this was the exact opposite of her real-life personality!
This movie would've produced so many memes if modern internet was around back then.
Fun fact: the guy at the copy place in the beginning is legendary guitarist Jerry Cantrell of the awesome grundge band ALICE IN CHAINS.
This is actually my fav Tom Cruise movie. It's really one of his best work 👍😁
My favorite reactions are the movies that you would not have picked to watch yourself but end up loving.
I think Magnolia was his best 'real' acting.
If you haven't seen it... "Out of Africa" is an epic love story. Meryl Streep, Robert Redford - nuff said. 👋 Carly✌️
how have you not seen Jerry Maguire! Great one. Have fun.
Cameron Crow made this move. And Crow is the real William in the move Almost Famous. It was his life story if you did not already know.
When Jerry started his speech in the living room at the end in front of the ex-wives, they both set up in their chair. Like oh, I’m ready to hear this shit.
In case it has not been said, Kush is Vern from Stand By Me.
Singles is better.
Music Flick? Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, John Candy and Carrie Fisher? The Blues Brothers!
Yes! I totally forgot Jerry Cantrell was in this and a reaction of “Singles” would be great!
"I gotta get da bonus"
--He's Canadian!
That cracked me up.
Love the movie. Loved the reaction. I really appreciated the comment you answered back to my superchat. It made my day. Thank you for being the great person you are.
Cuba Gooding who played Rod, won the Academy Award for this movie
If any movie was ever written specifically for you, this is it... get the tissues ready
Bonny hunt plays her sister...so many good roles for her like this. Also Paul's wife in, green mile!
There needs to be more reactions to classic romcoms. I liked this.
One of my favourite movies. So glad you watched it! "Show me the money" "Help me help you" ""You had me at hello" One of Cruises best movies!
One of my favorite movies of all time. Cruise should have won an Oscar for this performance. And I fell in love with Renee Zellweger
Why ?
@@lexkanyima2195 didn't mean literally fell in love with her
if you liked Bonnie Hunt as the sister, she wrote and directed a terrific rom-com: "Return To Me." It is a fantastic film I've seen many times.
You ladies should watch Knight and Day, which is a great Tom Cruise movie. Basically a Comedy style Mission Impossible/romance movie. Love your reactions! :)
I ❤ that film, it’s underrated
You know, I think she's already seen that one, before she started her channel, Here's a list of nearly everything Cassie has seen, even before she started her "First Time Watching" channel. Check out her Letterboxd page: letterboxd.com/pib1/films/by/name/
Yes!!! Love that movie
this is another one of those movies where Tom's co-star got the better of it: both he and Cuba were nominated for Oscars but only Cuba won; Newman won the Oscar for The Color of Money; Hoffman won it for Rain Man, Nicholson got nominated for A Few Good Men, Holly Hunter got nominated for The Firm, Ken Watanabe got nominated for The Last Samurai, and Jamie Foxx got nominated for Collateral
Damn that's true. I wonder what he's doing wrong? Like he's being punished for being too big a movie star.
