    I will never forget the first time I heard the exquisitely beautiful no. 4. My radio alarm woke me one morning with this piece, and it was like waking up in paradise! I went up to London the following weekend and bought the sheet music, but alas it is well beyond my playing ability. I found it is much more difficult than it sounds. Perhaps one day in Heaven! And isn't no.5 exhilarating! Thanks for posting!

      I have had a few experiences of waking up into beautiful music that were truly magical. As I pass through that liminal space between dreams and consciousness the music seems to be coming from inside my mind, or just materializing out of pure creation... Then I wake up, understand again who I am and what music is, as such - but I am left with a really intimate and sublime memory of the piece...
      As a musician, I wonder if this is a returning to "hearing" from a place of intellectual innocence, like in childhood, when music was most wondrous and mysterious to me...
      Regardless, these pieces are beautiful and played exquisitely, and I am fully awake rn

Alfred has no facial expression so I cannot read his mind but he gives me the idea that he has been sent to the keyboard as punishment and that punishment is meted out by our Franz! but who wins? Isn't he singing along silently? Watching the floor of his mouth and upper neck move with the notes. Total immersion.

    • @richardsykes3764
      @richardsykes3764 8 лет назад +9

      Not always silently. Brendel used to hum, not tunefully, and not really singing at all, but a sort of involuntary response of the soul to the music. So yes, a total immersion. One feels as if one is witnessing, and sharing in, a prolonged private epiphany. Deeply moving.

    Interpretion of, or as Schubert?

    • @maxfochtmann9576
      @maxfochtmann9576 3 года назад +2

      Brendel does not interpret. He lets the composer speak. He plays Schubert, not Brendel.

    It looks like he's got band-aids on some of his fingers. Seems odd, because I'd think the slight loss of tactility would detrimentally alter his playing every so slightly.

      yes i noticed that years ago in most of his schubert pieces, but then i saw perahia with a band aid on as well and even my first piano teacher had one on? must have worn out their pads?

      I think it also helps stop your fingers sliding over the keys

      When asked about this, Brendel used to reply that he plays better when he's plastered.

    aucune version ne me parait supérieure à celle de brendel concernant fraanz schubert , brendel est au sommet j'attends de trouver lipatti , lupu et perahia ,, la course est lancée pour le plu grand bonheur des mélomanes ,, schubert est si rare ,, je veux dire ceux qui maîtrisent schubert mais vous aurez compris
