  • Hey everyone!
    2021 has been quite a crazy year in MLB. A lot of great players have done great things. However, before the season, I doubt many people believed Salvador Perez would lead the league in home runs and RBIs. This record breaking season might be overlooked in award races, but it's certainly worth a deep dive. I hope you enjoy the video!

    It’s interesting the two best catchers in the AL this year were Perez and Grandal. Perez is the anti-Grandal defensively - Grandal’s a master framer but terrible at controlling base runners and blocking pitches. They’re pretty opposite offensively too, with Grandal taking so many walks and not hitting for average. Pretty cool how there are multiple paths to a great season.

    Salvy's a great example of why framing isn't the defining stat of a catcher. Sure, it didn't help his fWAR but he's done great throwing runners out, not to mention power at the plate. If Ohtani didn't have a once-in-a-lifetime season this year, Salvy definitely would be in the running for MVP. Great year overall and can't wait for 2022.

      Throwing out runners in a baseball game occur far less than an opportunity to frame. Framing is important and why salvy isnt a good catcher

    • @jamesjakegood4736
      @jamesjakegood4736 2 года назад +6

      @@edisonvicari7476 Throwing out runners isn't just about the guys you do throw out, but the ones who decide not to run because of who is behind the plate. Going first to second with no outs or 1 out is a huge and can be the difference between scoring a run and GIDP. Framing is highly subjective as it also depends on the umpire and pitchers on the mound.

    • @milojohnson3057
      @milojohnson3057 2 года назад +1

      @@jamesjakegood4736 framing imo is more important cause it has a more direct impact on the game, and is so much more important in TODAY'S GAME specifically. also, throwing out runner depends a lot on the pitcher, as windup time, pitch velocity, and pitch location have huge effects on the ability of a runner to steal. stealing will always be easier when facing a pitcher with a slow windup, low velocity pitches, and low zone breaking balls. there's a great video by foolish baseball about how catchers don't have as much control over throwing out runners as you may think. good framers can manufacture pitcher counts, and by extension force batters to swing and miss or make weak contact. pitchers want strikes more than ever before, and if a catcher can manipulate a batter into striking out, they dont have to worry about bases being stolen AT ALL. today's catchers NEED to be evaluated so much more heavily by framing until we get robo umps.

    • @jamesjakegood4736
      @jamesjakegood4736 2 года назад +6

      @@milojohnson3057 Yes it is true that pitchers have an influence on throwing out base runners but having a quick pop time and throwing out almost 50 percent of stealers is impressive regardless of the pitcher. Like I said framing is also dependent on umpires and pitchers. Not sure why framing is somehow exempt from dependent variables and throwing out BR isn't.

    Pitch framing is incredibly stupid to knock against a catcher particularly a catcher the size of Perez. Any little moment a catcher his size has to make is going to be much more noticeable than a smaller catcher. Also pitch framing is literally based off of either a bad pitch by the pitcher or a bad call by an ump. So stupid to knock that against a catcher. Perez HOF is going to be more complicated when you look at Posey and Molina. Perez already has more HR than both and will soon have more RBIs than both as well. With all the catchers in the HOF every catcher with at least 300 Hr 1k RBIs and 2k hits has gotten it. Perez is just slightly off pace from the 2k hits but not by much.

    I'm surprised you didn't bring up that Perez's splits. Salvy was successful at the plate whether he was playing catcher or at the DH spot, but the split is really crazy:
    As Catcher (501 PAs): .290/.329/.542
    As DH (163 PAs): .218/.276/.551
    In those 163 PAs at DH, he hit 15 homers and struck out 53 times, which would be 55 homers and 195 K's over 600 PAs, or if you calc based on the 665 PAs that Salvy clocked in this year, 61 homers(!) and 216 K's. Just wild.
