It's perfectly sensible to care about the moral failings of people who hold immense power & influence -- we should expect them to be at least somewhat honorable, because they AREN'T just any random historical figure. Also no you really *can't* find condemnable dirt on any historical figure, just the ones who actually did condemnable stuff. Believe it or not, it was possible to live a full life in the early 1900s WITHOUT committing reprehensible acts -- we just don't tend to remember those people because they rarely hold power or get glorified in the historical record. That alone should tell us something about power & corruption in our society, which is kinda the POINT of finding faults in figures like Roosevelt.

If you were to look just two comments further down you would see I admitted my mistake. True. Another thing that makes a big difference is that way less people actually voted back then. Women couldn't vote. Blacks couldn't vote. And even though all white adult males COULD vote, most people didn't just because it was really hard to vote back then if you were some farmer. So it's way easier to get really lopsided results when you've got such a tiny actual voting population. Also, important thing. Nobody ran against Washington anyway. The first two US elections were just concentrated efforts to get George Washington to accept the presidency. I'm not sure who the people who voted against him voted for. Maybe they just really didn't like him for some reason and voted for somebody who wasn't running?

Actually, the bar tab from the first election that George Washington won is still in existence. You can find copies of it in history books. He lost an election to someone who handed out free booze and he learned from his experience. It was a whole wagon load.
THANK YOU for pointing out that where Obama was born is completely moot-because his mom is a US citizen. As someone who was born outside of the US and adopted and made a citizen, the “natural-born citizen” clause has made me irrationally angry for years-especially when it felt like I was the only one actually studying/trying in high school US Government classes.

+Jack Rackam The presidents on the monument are rather uncontroversial. Everyone loves them (with the modern exception of maybe Roosevelt... but at the time, everyone loved him). So that was the primary driver. It's the same reason they kept wanting to name states after them. Glad you enjoyed the videos :)
Knowing Better The Presidents themselves are uncontroversial, but the reasons the creator of Mt. Rushmore wanted them there were steeped in racism. Now most people approve of what they did to get on Mt. Rushmore, but that doesn't mean the reason the creator liked those actions wasn't racist.

Ok let’s sort out the dumb misconceptions. Yes, Teddy was friends with Gutzon Borglum, but he was also friends with Abe Lincoln’s son. To say Teddy is only on there cause they were friends is as stupid as saying the same of Lincoln. While Teddy’s inclusion more than like had a small part to do with that, to say that’s the only reason is stupid. I’m of the belief he was our greatest President by far for many reasons. He was a war hero, a brave leader, created the Natural Parks, broke up the monopolies, created the Panama Canal, helped clean up the nation, expanded America’s power without being a dick to other countries, set us on the path to become a super power, almost upstaged an in house president when he returned for a potential 3rd term, almost won an election as an independent candidate, survived being shot and still giving a speech before going to a hospital, tried to fight in WW1 and was just an overall badass. The idea he didn’t do anything for our nation is one of the stupidest things I’ve ever heard. Unfortunately much his legacy was pissed away by Wilson, imo our worst president. The man was and still is more than worthy of the honor.

All of the 69 electors picked Washington either as President or VP, so in that regard, he did. However, on the states that allowed a popular vote, Washington won 90.5 percent of the popular vote. So it wasn't unanimous there.
As for Gorge Washington being elected unanimously. They didn't count the popular vote back then, but he was unanimously voted for by the electoral delegates (who are what people actually vote for.)

Panama was an alternative route, with a shorter overland crossing, however Nicaragua was more popular.
Some Americans came to California via a route different than the two you mention. One of my great-great grandmothers was a child when she, her siblings, and her mother came to California. They took a ship from Maine, and walked across the Isthmus of Panama, and then took another ship to San Francisco. It was less expensive than "rounding the Horn." But they paid a different price. One of my great great's siblings caught a tropical disease and died in Panama.

Great video! The situation with Puerto Rico does go a little deeper than the issue of seats in Congress. There have been quite a few referendums in Puerto Rico on the matter, in all of which but the most recent (I'll get to that in a minute) the Puerto Rican people voted to remain in the position they are in rather than opt for statehood or independence which are their other options. In the most recent referendum 97% voted for statehood. Issue solved right? Except...... that happened because those against statehood boycotted the referendum, and it had an incredibly low turnout of 23%. Boycotting elections is a stupid strategy by the way. So, yeah. Not a resounding yes for statehood to send to D.C. There are other problems, but that is the main one. Considering that in the past, states overwhelmingly wanted to join, this is a little different. Yes, they are not a State right now because the people of PR have not super-affirmatively voted to join the US as a State. It has very little to do with US Congress. The people must, as a super majority, express interest first. Not 51%. But more. How much? Not really defined to my knowledge. But two-thirds is a good starting point. Once that happens, then Congressional politics can be blamed. I don't see PR voting to join any time soon. A history of US mistreatment of PR leaves many upset with the US. Just look up the Ponce Massacre, Campos, and Winship. PR doesn't see the US as a father. It sees it as an occupier to many in the territory/country. That is slowly changing. Maybe in 50 years they will vote to join.

Born and raised in Texas (and told the most biased history of the Confederacy), I had never heard that "betting" phrase before, lol. Even with all the romanticizing and slavery swept under the carpet, it was pretty obvious that the south wasn't going to make it due to most of its industry resting on the backs of slaves. You should check out the Union Pacific, it didn’t actually create a non-stop railway from coast to coast. They built the tracks at too steep a grade through the Rockies for a train and used portage to continue to the other side. I went to work in the field I was interested in and discovered after 3 weeks of working, I had exhausted my 2 years of college knowledge. For the next 2 months I learned more than I would have in the remaining 2 years of school. So, I dropped out. That was back in 1982. It was a mess back then too. I'm doing just fine today. School cost money and you don't learn much. When I worked, I got paid to do my job and learn. Better choice. I'm not anti-classroom. There are some things you will need to be in class for to qualify for things, but use school as a resource and a stepping stone to a future not the solution to your destination. And don't stop learning. I learn every day and I'm still not back a college.

The Panama Canal doesn't run east-to-west -- it runs north-to-south, and the northernmost point (the Atlantic side) is actually slightly west of the southernmost point (the Pacific side).

You have a factual error starting at 4:45. Obama is a citizen, but ONLY because he was born in the US. Birthright citizenship in the US has not always worked the same as it does today. At the time of Obama's birth at least one parent must have US citizenship AND have at least 5 years of residency in the US after their 14th birthday. As Obama's mom was only 18 at the time of his birth she did NOT meet the requirements for passing on her citizenship to her son.

True. Another thing that makes a big difference is that way less people actually voted back then. Women couldn't vote. Blacks couldn't vote. And even though all white adult males COULD vote, most people didn't just because it was really hard to vote back then if you were some farmer. So it's way easier to get really lopsided results when you've got such a tiny actual voting population.
Also, important thing. Nobody ran against Washington anyway. The first two US elections were just concentrated efforts to get George Washington to accept the presidency. I'm not sure who the people who voted against him voted for. Maybe they just really didn't like him for some reason and voted for somebody who wasn't running?

As someone who was born outside of the US and adopted and made a citizen, the “natural-born citizen” clause has made me irrationally angry for years-especially when it felt like I was the only one actually studying/trying in high school US Government classes.

+Jack Rackam The presidents on the monument are rather uncontroversial. Everyone loves them (with the modern exception of maybe Roosevelt... but at the time, everyone loved him). So that was the primary driver. It's the same reason they kept wanting to name states after them.

Ok let’s sort out the dumb misconceptions. Yes, Teddy was friends with Gutzon Borglum, but he was also friends with Abe Lincoln’s son. To say Teddy is only on there cause they were friends is as stupid as saying the same of Lincoln.
While Teddy’s inclusion more than like had a small part to do with that, to say that’s the only reason is stupid. I’m of the belief he was our greatest President by far for many reasons. He was a war hero, a brave leader, created the Natural Parks, broke up the monopolies, created the Panama Canal, helped clean up the nation, expanded America’s power without being a dick to other countries, set us on the path to become a super power, almost upstaged an in house president when he returned for a potential 3rd term, almost won an election as an independent candidate, survived being shot and still giving a speech before going to a hospital, tried to fight in WW1 and was just an overall badass. The idea he didn’t do anything for our nation is one of the stupidest things I’ve ever heard. Unfortunately much his legacy was pissed away by Wilson, imo our worst president. The man was and still is more than worthy of the honor.

The way the electoral college worked back then, was electors got to pick two people, one for president and one for VP. All of the 69 electors picked Washington either as President or VP, so in that regard, he did.
However, on the states that allowed a popular vote, Washington won 90.5 percent of the popular vote. So it wasn't unanimous there.
As for Gorge Washington being elected unanimously. They didn't count the popular vote back then, but he was unanimously voted for by the electoral delegates (who are what people actually vote for.)
And Hamilton told the electors to not vote for Adams, so Washington could win unanimously.

Great video! The situation with Puerto Rico does go a little deeper than the issue of seats in Congress. There have been quite a few referendums in Puerto Rico on the matter, in all of which but the most recent (I'll get to that in a minute) the Puerto Rican people voted to remain in the position they are in rather than opt for statehood or independence which are their other options. In the most recent referendum 97% voted for statehood. Issue solved right? Except...... that happened because those against statehood boycotted the referendum, and it had an incredibly low turnout of 23%. Boycotting elections is a stupid strategy by the way. So, yeah. Not a resounding yes for statehood to send to D.C. There are other problems, but that is the main one. Considering that in the past, states overwhelmingly wanted to join, this is a little different. If you're looking for a video topic it would be a good one. Anyways, great job!

Yes, they are not a State right now because the people of PR have not super-affirmatively voted to join the US as a State. It has very little to do with US Congress. The people must, as a super majority, express interest first. Not 51%. But more. How much? Not really defined to my knowledge. But two-thirds is a good starting point. Once that happens, then Congressional politics can be blamed.
I don't see PR voting to join any time soon. A history of US mistreatment of PR leaves many upset with the US. Just look up the Ponce Massacre, Campos, and Winship. PR doesn't see the US as a father. It sees it as an occupier to many in the territory/country.

I went to work in the field I was interested in and discovered after 3 weeks of working, I had exhausted my 2 years of college knowledge. For the next 2 months I learned more than I would have in the remaining 2 years of school. So, I dropped out. That was back in 1982. It was a mess back then too. I'm doing just fine today. School cost money and you don't learn much. When I worked, I got paid to do my job and learn. Better choice. I'm not anti-classroom. There are some things you will need to be in class for to qualify for things, but use school as a resource and a stepping stone to a future not the solution to your destination. And don't stop learning. I learn every day and I'm still not back a college.

I stopped the video to look at your map and unfortunately I still don't understand how the Atlantic side of the Panama Canal is further west than the Pacific side.

Panama is S shaped. So the Atlantic is north of Panama while the Pacific is south, rather than east-west.
The Panama Canal doesn't run east-to-west -- it runs north-to-south, and the northernmost point (the Atlantic side) is actually slightly west of the southernmost point (the Pacific side).

Phillip the map is not pointing north but zooms in on the channel zone. In a real map that is oriented with North on top it would look almost like this slash: \ with the atlantic side on top and the pacific side on the bottom.

You have a factual error starting at 4:45. Obama is a citizen, but ONLY because he was born in the US. Birthright citizenship in the US has not always worked the same as it does today. At the time of Obama's birth at least one parent must have US citizenship AND have at least 5 years of residency in the US after their 14th birthday. As Obama's mom was only 18 at the time of his birth she did NOT meet the requirements for passing on her citizenship to her son.

Yes. My wife is Hawaiian and her sisters were born before it became a state and she was born after. They're all considered citizens of the US by birth today.
