Cosmic, Bossanova, Jazz fusion vibes. 'Fufu' is my fav...sounds so sophisticated. Donald Byrd was a genius & all of his albums are well worth listening to especially the 70s stuff. 'Black Bryd' & 'Street Lady' are 2 classics....

Check out Donald Byrd’s “Live At The Half Note” album with Pepper Adams on bari and (again) with George Cables on acoustic piano. Imo one off his best albums, worth checking out. But Kofi is a wonderful album, with a stellar line-up. Dig & Cheers!
Great album. I've loved Donald Byrd since ~2000 when I picked up "First Flight" at Jazz Record Mart in Chicago. A very underrated composer/musician - I think he sits right in that pre-fusion space like Miles' "In a Silent Way" but he did a lot of really funky stuff like this.

If someone had described this to me before listening, I'd say it's not my kind of thing. But I loved it and was gripped all the way through. Thank you!
One factor that makes side a a unique sounding session is Airto on drums. You didn't hear him on traps much until his own albums. The different tones of the rim pops on Fufu suggest an added percussionist in the mix, but nope, that's just Airto bringing it on the kit. Airto and Carter together are a genre unto themselves.
I agree. Remembering a concert of Airto Moreira and Flora Purim band in the nineties. We heard Airto in a 20 minutes solo, there were moments of pure hallucination, we heard every instrument of a batucada and we watched a lonely drummer ! Sometimes Airto is too much, but he is really a master of polyrhytmics.
