DIY builders went through plenty of different gear drive designs and materials before production boards started using them with the majority of current offerings just clones of designs that existed in the builders space prior, I’ve seen most of those designs fail mid-ride more often than not. I’ll take a 10 pack of belts any day after multiple occurrences of being 30km away from my car and having a gear drive fail still sometimes still 5km away from where an uber can get to me.

I haven’t had a lot of time with Gear drives. When a gear drive fail, what component is the most likely to fail? I’m asking because I’m thinking about converting a lot of my belt drives to gear drives. But most advertisers are saying gear drives are less likely to fail? I know marketing isn’t to be trusted. Please let me know you thoughts!

@@evtechsteven I will be testing the omni gear drive soon, do you have an update on you setup. Thank you your videos. 👍

Nice video but I'm still concerned about the durability and longevity of gear drives. No one seems to talk about long term wear after hundreds of miles. Belts don't leave me stranded as I can carry spares and swap in less than 5 mins.

Gears let you know when they are getting worn out. If it gets really bad you can sometimes reverse all of them and use for a heck of a long time. Used to do it on Real and RC cars to keep things going !

I guess you've never heard of a differential? Transfer case? Manual Transmission? Starter cog? Chains drive on gears too. All these seem to do exceptionally well in durability, longevity, not leaving me stranded and I've never had to spend time changing any of them like I have serpentine belts and drive belts. :) I prefer full metal gears to synthetic rubber crap lol

More expensive to replace and not as powerful

This is wrong. It all depends on the gear drive but in general, gear drives offer more torque but lower top speed if nothing else is changed and you just swap out belt drive for gear. Gear drives also feel different and have lower resistance, therefore it free rolls more and is more efficient than belt drive. Some gear drives can also completely keep the board still while on a steep hill, it won't roll like a belt drive. I have boards with gear drive, belt drive, hub drive and direct drive. They all have their pros and cons. It's not a blanket statement as to which one is better.

Gear drive may be more efficient, but I'm sure it requires more maintenance

They can both be equilly efficient just have to size the gears

Okay someone may correct me if I am mistaken here, but aren't belt drives in fact more efficient? With each additional gear you're adding friction and rolling resistance that you wouldn't have with a belt?

@@mattheidman9758 Not sure what your point is, it's not that belts can transmit more power but for lower power they are generally more efficient. Also trains don't have transmissions, they are usually direct drive electric motors.

You guys kill me, yes a gear drive is more efficient than a belt drive. Do a Google search instead of asking random people in a RUclips comments section lmfao I gave you the right answer, your emotional response is unnecessary, go take a course
