  • Shadow puppetry is a traditional Chinese folk art with a history of more than 2,000 years.
Puppeteers hold puppets made of animal hides, project them on a rear-illuminated white curtain, and create bodily movements and facial expressions by moving the bamboo sticks with their dexterous hands.
To stage a play, members of a shadow play troupe need seamless cooperation in operating puppets, playing music and singing.
Shadow puppetry has taken on a variety of styles around China by mixing with local traditions. Chinese shadow puppetry artists have been working hard to preserve and innovate this ancient art form to help it shine once again in modern society.
