I once saw a performance in Europe. It is all done live, that is, in real time. They use transparent coloured silhouettes, with flexible joints, pressed against the canvas from the rear side so that the light shines right through them, and guide them with thin rods which are attached to the various parts. There might be several people working on a single character, which requires a lot of experience and coordination, as they mustn't get into the way of each other. This performance is especially outstanding.
