Daydream vocals are completely etheral and superhuman. So fluid, agile, light/powerful at the same time - it just sounded like there was nothing she couldn't do, and she did all of it throughout every song. Butterfly sounds beautiful and raw, but from a vocal standpoint, it falls short of Daydream (and so does every other era to some degree).
@@solar588 Her technique was prob at its best during MB/MC - rounded, resonant, clear. So I would agree technically. But in terms of wow factor, I gotta go with Daydream because those vocals are SO unique and impossible to recreate.
@@CalebTizonher technique during 1993 was wow as well, she happened to be sick but when she was at her best, you could only be wowed by that majestic technique
I think us fans usually would choose daydream over butterfly because her voice seemed more stronger and healthier but I just think she changed her style of singing during the butterfly era because it seemed like she used more of her chest voice to create a more soulful sound like she did during the music box era and during the daydream era her voice seemed more softer and girlier because of the head voice/ softness style of singing.
Definitely Daydream took the prize (vocally). During this Era, Mariah had experimented with her upper range. Her ease in hitting and sustaining those high notes. Her voice was also very clear with very good technique. In terms of her Butterfly Era voice, I do believe her voice was definitely a little worn out and raspy ( i do like those the rasp tho). But it seems she might have had more fun during this time and was alot more creative and free, not focusing too much on technique. It's like Daydream represented a vocal high excited state and Butterfly was her voice returning to a more balance neutral state. Good video.
Butterfly wins in whistles lower notes, tone, mid belts, soul, melisma, her natural hair too Daydream wins in upper belt ease 😍 and the beautiful head voice or whatever and the non raspy girly voice was so smooth and addictive oh and the sustained belts fsss
Emotions: Butterfly - less pitchy and honestly the airy whistles really fit the song Dreamlover: Daydream - Nothing beats the MB version but she gave us adlibs we’ll never see again. She had so much fun with it and it fit the song style extremely well I’ll be there: Daydream - sounds just like the original, and so effortless. What a gem ❤️ Make It Happen: Tie - DD was hitting notes like no other, playing around in her highest range like it was the easiest thing ever. However Butterfly’s tone was INCREDIBLE for this particular song. So much power just like the song calls for. Really brought us a whole new version of it and I would’ve loved if she’d done an official re-recording of it during this era One Sweet Day: Daydream - no explanation needed Without You: Butterfly - Another circumstance where that raspy, powerful tone fits so perfectly with the song style. In my opinion, a better key for it as well. I can feel what she’s singing and saying, more emotional VOL: Tie - DD for upper belt adlibs, very creative and beautiful sounding. Butterfly for pitch control and absolutely nailing that iconic ending riff! Hero: Daydream - We will never get another Tokyo Dome performance ever again. Possibly the best of her career
1:50 to 2:07 both are the best along with frankfurt, worcester and des o connor. I love the sooouuohoh oh in both of them and for me haunting bb6‘s like the perth one are reasons i would butterfly era still count as her prime.
Daydream was more fluid and effortless, especially with belts and falsetto/whisper, but butterfly was more consistently on pitch, both with belts and whistles.
@@Gievyji she was in a better vocal condition during daydream so that must’ve been a factor but I feel like her sense of pitch during butterfly was slightly improved.
Daydream era was topnotch, unbeatable and unmatched forever. You can imagine what Mariah can offer in the 1st DIvas Live if this was the kind of voice she has at that time.
Her vocal decline must have been so incredibly frustrating for her to go through. Imagine being able to effortlessly belt G5s and then in just a few years, you struggle to hit even E5s. I would have been so depressed
I wonder what actually happened. Because in 1996 she has this light girly voice with insane ease to reach these high notes and amazing fluidity and then in the space of months to 1997 her voice changes quite drastically. This must’ve been so frustrating for her because in the butterfly era her precision and pitch improved a lot so it was clearly something completely out of her control.
Loved both eras but I really like Butterfly because of how free she was and how happier she seemed. She was able to be her true authentic self! But of course, I looooove daydream era because of the quality of her voice!

Daydreamriah Vs Butterflyriah 1. Emotions- Butterflyriah takes it. Better fullness in tone and better pitch accuracy in the Whistle register. Daydream was great and had better phrasing and a better legato line between D5 and F5 but that was just it. 2. Dreamlover: Daydreamriah takes it because this is where she started lipping extensively in Butterflyriah. 3. Ill be there- Daydreamriah. Such a beautiful tone and excellent execution of legato!!!!! Her legato was amazing in Daydream. 4. Make it happen- Butterflyriah takes it for me even though she had less fluidity and ease. Her pitch was better than Daydreamriah. Daydreamriah had many pitch issues with Make It Happen as she Demi Lovato with the song (added high notes and stretched to high notes which was unnecessary in many cases), in Butterfly she now was calm and could focus in meaning the song. 5. One Sweet Day- Daydreamriah. Not a song to be sung unless Mariah Carey is in prime vocal conditions. 6. Without You- I'LL PASS. Because she approached it in different ways. She sang it like a songwriter in Butterfly. Butterfly carries so much emotion. It sounds so sad and she sounds wounded and heartbroken and this works for this song!! Daydream is vocally beautiful but Butterfly just pulls my heart strings and makes me miss an ex I've never had. I feel her pain in her delivery in her voice and id repeat Butterfly's performance and cry myself to sleep. But Daydream is spectacular vocally. 7. Vision of Love- Another song where i am torn because Butterfly sounds so purposeful and so meaningful. So rich in many elements. But Daydream has that undeniable ease and flexibility. Butterfly has BETTER PITCH though. And on the ending run, its pretty much a tie. The last part, Daydream flys to it, Butterfly powers and torpedos it. I like them both. 8. Hero- Tie. Daydream had nice choices but Butterfly had better pitch accuracy. Overall, Daydream had clumsier pitch but both eras were IT
With just the fact that make it happen at MSG during daydream destroys every Other perfofmance that exist of that song make your whole list subjective and not objective at all. Great points regardless 👍🏽
@ismaelm.mbaangue9147 please note that hitting a bunch of high notes doesn't make you A GREAT SINGER. It makes you a GOOD VOCALIST. Mariah in MSG hit alot of unnecessary high notes that didn't lend to the emotional quality of Make It Happen. But in Butterfly, her singing was more NUANCED, where she knew her voice wasn't at peak but she used it to full effect. "I Struggled and I prayed" hits different in this era because of the added rasp in her voice. And she actually utilized a more balanced mixed voice in Butterfly though raspy, than in Daydream which was headier and lighter. I like the warmer richer tone in Butterfly even amidst the rasp and airyness
@@kijanayoung2000 First of all: I would like you to show me which part of my comment says that hitting a bunch of high notes make you a great Singer? I don't know who you are but i believe you think to high on yourself since you ask people you don't know to take a note. If you are a vocal coach you shouldn't be that biased and i'm glad you've made a Profesional sound Engineer with more than 8 years of career with Broadway musicians. Since you are acting profesional i will start with the fullness you are talking about, i don't know where you get from that Butterfly's tone was richier and fuller. The frequencies between M1 to M3 clearly claim Daydream's overtones way better and way more balanced, all the phrassing were above 0.9Hz unlike Butterfly. Butterfly was just chestier, Husky and Raspy which is a sign of vocal damage but make her tone there more remarkable but not balanced at all. During Daydream she didn't even need to take a breath for perfect transitions into M3 and the frequencies were still 0.9Hz which is completely full between the phrassing while Butterfly struggled sometimes just to add vibrato where it was necessary. People have come those days claiming her pitch issue as the most relevant issue during that time at the point of where it wasn't even as remarkable unlike you are a perfectionist, Every era of hers and every singer got some pitch issue at times. Butterfly was better musically, she took great choices to fit her vocal condition but during Daydream especially the MSG Undubbed which was shown on TV in 1995 she had almost 0 issue with a perfect pitch while the concept is to be "Exceptional singer" and not a perfect vocalist.
