    Why do you wear a helmet when you’re biking but not when you’re hiking?

    • @inthemix
      @inthemix  10 дней назад +44

      I'm writing this for anyone who thinks helmets are not necessary as I can't tell if your comment it a joke...
      When I hike, I will at most have a 5-6ft fall from my head to the ground. The speed of my fall can easily be handled by my arms and it's unlikely to actually damage my head. Imagine falling from vertical into a plank position, you can prevent yourself from slamming into the ground. You're much more likely to twist an ankle or pull a muscle when hiking. Head injuries are more rare.
      On a road bike, a fall at almost any speed can be fatal or life changing. While I average around 20-25 kmph, it's common to exceed 50 or 60 kmph at times and a head on collision at this speed without a helmet is almost impossible to survive. Imagine a brick being thrown at your head at 60 kmph...or imagine falling from a 2/3 storey building and trying to stop your fall with your arms....it's horrying to crash at speed on a bike and I apologise for creating this image.
      I have unfortunately been in a horrible cycling crash once in my life (no fault of my own) and my helmet likely saved my life, or at least my quality of life. The helmet shattered, cracked and crushed to absorb a huge amount of energy that otherwise would have gone directly into my skull and brain. I had a serious concussion but thankfully walked away. The helmet also absorbs rotational forces as well as direct impacts, which also helps protect the brain.
      Bike helmets are awesome, I care about you and hope you use one!

The bass isn't as pronounced but it's a nice trade off for being able to have a conversation while listening to a podcast or being able to just hear traffic around you while jamming, etc. you can also pop in some ear plugs and the bass will get better.

    When I work out, if I use ear buds the sweat irritates my ear canals and I sometimes get ear zits which as you can imagine are, just as awful and terrible to deal with.

    Hey Michael,
    Thanks for the review. One thing I've been curious about is how much 'noise leak' would you say these have? For example, if someone were to wear these out in public, be it at the local gym, or wearing it in a subway or train or on a plane, is there noticeable noise leak that you could hear music playing on someone who is next to you, 5 feet away, etc.?
    I've been interested in these types of headphones, but also feel like I don't want to become part of the noise pollution problem in public of subjecting others to my music out loud. Any thoughts on how much noise others would pick up around you if you wear these in more public areas? Like would this be acceptable for cycling but rude to be sitting next to someone on public transportation with? Thanks in advance.

    You should test some kinda haptic system like a SubPac, I've wanted to get one of those bass kickers for awhile just because they're alot cheaper (those aren't portable though). I think there's alot of potential for haptic technology in sound. Like haptics in phones for instance (because they lack low end)

    Can you EQ them to get the bass on par with other headphones?

    • @inthemix
      @inthemix  10 дней назад

      EQ helps but unfortunately the lower frequency vibrations can never have enough energy to create the same fullness as regular headphones without excessive vibration against the face (in my experience). I did think that EQ improved them though. I think everyone should eq any headphones or speakers to suit them!

    I think you failed to emphasize one very important point for these considering what your channel is about. Can you recommend these solely for listening to music?
    You answered the most important question; how does the music sound. But what it actually means in practice? What I mean is that when your ears are open to everything, how does that "everything" interact with the music? Does one drown out the other? Does it depend on the volume of either the headphones or outside sounds? How the volume affect these, especially the frequency response and how loud these even go?
    I hope to get a bit more in-depth analysis from these on that front! I think you'd be the first qualified sound engineer to ever having done that, if you will.

    • @inthemix
      @inthemix  10 дней назад

      To answer that question as simply as possible, it is like any other frequency masking situation. If you were to have a lot of midrange in your envious around you, the songs midrange will be less easy to hear clearly.
      Other than that, the outside world doesn’t interact with the sound at all from what I can hear!
