It happens to actors sometimes. It actually happen to Oldman: Source blog.chron.com/celebritybuzz/2012/02/gary-oldman-needed-help-regaining-british-accent/
Bale only does morning talk shows like "Good Morning America" and "The Today Show". I know the late night circuit doesn't seem to appeal to him, but what I wouldn't give to see Bale on "Conan" or "Jimmy Kimmel Show Live".
Totally, he is such a private guy but hes like so friggin cool man, maybe he's a big nerd underneath and he avoids the hard interviews wheres its about him. only talks of his projects i heard him once say to a reporter that he dives so deep into his characters that he doesn't even know who he is as a person and his publicist shoved him away from the interview, he has a psychotic work ethic
Vincecouk Seems like a more balanced person than most people, actually. I wouldn't even be surprised if becoming famous and losing normal anonymity already as a kid had screwed up his life, but clearly not. No entourages, mansions, rehabs or a string of failed short-term relationships. Still in love and married to the woman he met about 2 decades ago. A proud dad. Successful career. Much respected and adored by directors and actors who love working with him. And he definitely seems to be a very happy man and comfortable in his skin. If only we could all be nuts like him. ;)
Tuulia Moors look yes....agreed, except you're skirting over his anger outbursts a few years back, e.g. on set of Terminator. And his well publicised assault on his mother and sister in a hotel in 2008. He seems calmer and more together these days though. That said..... he still pulls various accents when being interviewed, and I'd say it's a needless extravagance. He should let his work speak for him, not his stupid interview accents. But no, I won't paint him as a Mr. Perfect.
Vincecouk Nobody is Perfect, that goes without saying. I'm not "skirting over" anything, I'm looking at the big picture of how he acts and what people who have personal experience say about him - not 2 minor incidents 7 years ago that were blown out of all proportion. Yes, he completely lost his cool once for a few minutes with a fellow professional (DP) who was repeatedly making elementary mistakes despite requests not to keep doing that, and was stopping Bale from doing his work, which meant more takes were needed. Bale had a very good reason to be frustrated and angry, and many people on that set and elsewhere thought so, too. But he took it too far, (people have bad days when stressed and tired), regretted it, apologized to the DP and the whole crew, the work continued, and that should have been the end of it. Over 6 months later some creep leaked the tape, so Bale just took full responsibility in public, too, admitted guilt and apologized again (and again and again since he kept being poked about it for months), though he hardly owed outsiders (us) any apologies. Other actors were trying to explain the situation, and what they thought of him, and pointed out he was doing 16 hour days, and the director - to explain where the actor was at - said he was swearing at Bale's face to push him to the required emotional state for the movie, etc. but Bale himself never mentioned any of that, he just admitted his own mistake and took all blame. People on that set and people in the industry in general apparently understood the full context and didn't condemn him in the first place. As for that assault you mentioned... it was a verbal assault and therefore a private matter ("a family matter" was basically mum's and sister's response to nosy media). No evidence of anything else and no charges. I guess July 2008 was not exactly the best time in his life. Also going through all The Dark Knight press stuff and premiere. (=Hey we would like you to ponder your friend's recent tragic death over and over for a few days, we bring tv cameras, and we take turns with you, keep talking...) And working long days on another movie. Maybe those 2 arguments showed that he was tired and stressed and the nerves were raw. But that's all. No big deal.
Aaaahhhhh Christian Bale.....loved this man since "Newsies" growing up. He is so hottttt.... Such a great actor too. One of the best. Very dedicated to his craft.
He is A M A Z I N G!!!!! And the sparkle in his eyes!!! In reply to Toolia Moors.... In American Psycho he displayed a wide range of acting skills, charm, crazy, comic, which is why it remains his best role to date.
The more I see this man's dedication to his craft, the more I get amazed !!! Man whenever he does a interview for a particular film, its the character of the film talking, his accent, his mannerisms everything. Cristian Bale is nowhere to be seen !!!!
right...that wife is everywhere...they try so desperately to promote her while he's campaigning for Oscars and stuff...I guess a good family man adds to the Hollywood prestige and makes up for the bad moments he had in the past...he used to be very reclusive, now you see the family often here and there...I'm guessing agents and studios pressuring...
What on earth are you on about, Sotia Omrd? Nobody is trying to "promote" his wife, nor is there any reason anyone would. The very idea is silly. And he doesn't actually campaign "for Oscars and stuff" either (though some studio people wish he did). He always was and continues to be a very private person, that hasn't changed; he's happy as a regular person, not as some celebrity. The idea of "agents and studios pressuring" a man to spend time with his wife and kids is hilarious. That's not what agents and studios do, you know, and it wouldn't work, anyway. He does it, and always has, because he wants to. There's no mystery to it just because he's a famous actor.
Sotia Omrd I completely agree with everything you said. Sibi Blazic is promoted as much as Christian Bale now, and they are photographed with the offspring all the time. Image control.
The film was a bit overstating itself as being a cult movie. Christian Bale and Amy Adams did a good job though. I think his role in 'The Big Short' was even better.
MrChurrobueno I second this. I can do several different accents and find myself randomly saying a word or words with the wrong accent. I'm American and I'm from the south and my normal accent is basically between a southern and standard american accent. However I can do a New York, Boston , Midwest, Appalachian(which is different than other southern accents), Urban(Ghetto black), Scottish and British accents well enough to be believable and sometimes a word just comes out the wrong way. Usually after I've been messing around with one of those accents.
Quite Qleb nah, when bale does a movie he changes his accent for the sake of the role he plays and that for the whole time he is doing that particular movie, to make sure it sounds authentic. He is also known for using that accent in interviews about the movie he is in. But, of course other factors that are already mentioned have something to do with it as well.
Happy Birthday Christian Bale. I Love The Dark Knight Rises, Terminator 4 Salvation, Pocahontas and Howl's Moving Castle. I Have fully faith, respect and support in u. May the Peace be with u. From Harlingen Texas. January 30, 1974 January 30, 2021 though January 30, 3021 🖤🖤🍺🍺🎂🎂🎂🎂🍺🍺🖤🖤
+Dragon Rumbler I wouldn't call him a method actor, but anyway... while your idea is correct - that it takes time to get rid of the accent and mannerisms of a character, that's not the same thing as being IN character. They are just outward, physical things. As for getting out of character, he can do that on set between takes as many who have worked with him have reported.
***** He doesn't have/has never had a Welsh accent. He isn't Welsh. His parents aren't Welsh, they're English. He was born in Wales but grew up in England since being a baby. He used to have a typical London accent but living in America and putting on American accents during so many of his acting roles has clearly influenced the way he speaks.
Outstanding English actor who had the mis fortune to be born in Wales while his English parents were travelling ... but his roots are all English as is his up bringing and accent
I literally just found out christian bale wasn't american! And that he's actually English?! But I guess he kinda has a combination of a Bronx and English accent.
gallosexybeast Err no. Actually its an old English/Noman surname. Besides, since when did the origins of a surname dictate your national allegiance? Either way, Bale himself says he is English. I think i will take his word for it to be honest.
He doesn't actually "give interviews in the character's voice" - he just speaks, like anyone normally does: not intentionally choosing an accent. He had not yet shed off Irving Rosenfeld's accent, so it still influenced how he sounded like. FCMn already commented on this: It's not a choice. Bale himself has said that if he could turn an accent on and off like a lamp, he would. It takes time to learn an accent and then to get rid of it.
christian bale is one of my fav actors and the only reason i checked out american hustle. but i couldnt even finish the movie. i was bored and am not a fan of the female stars of the movie
His accent is mainly american in this, I think its because if he went on to the interview with a british accent people would then watch the movie looking for any faults in his accent if they knew he was british.
ThyRed Coats Are you sure about that? Why on earth would his accent have anything of Welsh accent in it, he wasn't even playing a Welsh character around that time.
telliwood Probably yes. He's English, (been living in US since he was a teenager), and his character in American Hustle was from Bronx and the whole movie took place in New York.
Tuulia Moors he is welsh, thats not exactly the same. Their langauage is not even realted to English,. Anyways, in every interview he is using a different accent and in every movie he trains his accent to fit the role. What does that telll us?
He considers himself English, but also considers US his home (as he should by now). He is Welsh as much as Amy Adams is Italian - he was born in Wales to non-Welsh parents and didn't grow up in Wales, and she was born in Italy to non-Italian parents and didn't grow up in Italy). There is no reason he should sound Welsh anymore than she should sound Italian. As for Cymric, the Welsh language, that's not relevant here at all as its not his language. Learning the accent for each role is not an easy task. That he is prepared to put in the work tells us that he does what he needs to do for his roles.

+MAI AL HAMMADI lol, that's the only reason? Everyone not American is cool as hell?
I feel like the interviewer talked more than christian did....
Usually the case. The most loved interviewers are always the ones that let their guests talk...
Starts with an American accent, finishes with an English one? been in so many movies probably doesn't remember what his real accent is.

Isn't christian bale welsh? I don't know anymore either xDD!
No he's English, he was just born in wales.
Ahh Interesting :33, but wait :oo So he's Welsh but raised in England and is also speaking with an English ascent? Is that what your saying?
buddyj55
No I'm saying his parents are English and his parents give birth to him in wales then went straight back to England where he was raised.

The more I see this man's dedication to his craft, the more I get amazed !!!
Man whenever he does a interview for a particular film, its the character of the film talking, his accent, his mannerisms everything. Cristian Bale is nowhere to be seen !!!!
Please see his interviews during the Dark Knight trilogy . In all of them he speaks in a clear American accent !
Thats what I was talking about !
Misleading text ! He didn't say anything about he's wife !
Love this man. What a legend!
"Out of the Furnace" should have gotten way more attention. It's an AMAZING movie!
LITERALLY
"Christian Bale's Wife Talked Him into 'American Hustle'" Where was that in the interview?
Legit forgot about the title once I heard Bale speak lol

One of the best actors of this era he so submerges himself in whatever character he undertakes.
His voice makes me dream the most poetic things poetically😍😍😍😍😍😍

Pretty much. I liked him and Amy Adams but overall the movie bored me. I liked Out of the Furnace more.
He's the only reason I want to watch the movie, it really looks boring, not my cup of tea lol
That's too bad, as I found the story and overall movie entertaining as hell!
The film was a bit overstating itself as being a cult movie. Christian Bale and Amy Adams did a good job though. I think his role in 'The Big Short' was even better.
"It's like one ear throwing a lifeline to the other ear"
omg that's funny.
I don't get it
Bales accents shifts between british, american, italian and (jewish)?
When you know several different accents, languages etc, it's very common to switch between accents without even realizing it, I do it alot.
MrChurrobueno I second this. I can do several different accents and find myself randomly saying a word or words with the wrong accent. its just british but he's picked up an american 'twang'

Maham Kamran Patrick Bateman.

DragonRumber yeah

He's still got a little new york accent in his speech. great actor.
Sooo... Lois made out with Batman as well?! XD lol
Remember that this man is English when you hear him talk...
Headhunter Halfmoon he's Welsh
Nile Hough English
background music at the beginning is so cheap and contrast
I love him so much it hurts
the supposed 'English' accent he's using doesn't exist anywhere in England
I think it exists in Wales.

He's English, he was just born in wales. He's never had a Welsh accent.
chelseafc828 Actually he's Welsh, and it's his native accent, smartypants.
George Calm your so wrong he’s ENGLISH his parents are English he was only born in Wales and moved back to England when he was 1
Mastering accents should be part of playing, and in fact Christian is a great actor... ;o)
❤ I love Bale!!
You see, it's just a metaphor in a story.
Thank god for his wife
"so fucking incredibly worth it, christian bale" they muted him at the end! anyone else catch that? 3:07
Amy Adams is so incredible sweet!
Yeah wtf is with the title....
It doesn't matter, who's first

2. John Connor - Terminator 4 Salvation 2008
3. Howl - Howl's Moving Castle 2004
4. Thomas - Pocahontas 1995
Where's the title comment?? Nothing about his wife in the entire interview. Consider accurate title!
It's so weird hearing him talk with his native accent.
Amazing movie. Amazing cast.
he always does this! stop giving interviews in the character voice! we'll never know what he truly sounds like... lol
I honestly don't think he can help it.

jash the guy That was a pretty funny theory, but no. :) He's not trying to cover up being English.
christian bale is in love with Marisa Isaroskul
Its like a British new yorker? I can't quite place the accent.
Its a Welsh, Cockney mix.
