- Christian Bale felt right at home in the blue-collar town of Braddock, PA, where he shot his upcoming film Out of the Furnace. We recently sat down with the actor to learn why his character's tattoo was an homage to the town, talked about his behind-the-scenes relationship with onscreen nemesis Woody Harrelson, and discussed his busy Fall; his latest film with director David O. Russell, American Hustle, also comes out this month. When we asked Bale about Jennifer Lawrence, his onscreen wife in that movie, he gave us a refreshingly candid answer about his initial doubts over casting her in the role. Out of the Furnace hits theaters on Dec. 6.

jesus i never knew christian bale was not american. his american accent in american psycho was spot on. even his tone changed.
Didn't quite sound right to me. Sounded like a caricature of an "american accent". That being said, I thought he did well in the role.
i'm not american so it's easy to fool me.
john jingleheimer I agree with u, it sounded a bit funny and caricature-like the way Bale spoke in his American Psycho role. But I think that only added to the psychotic feeling of the character and enhanced the character, made it more believable.
so if you guys were to perhaps pinpoint a regional accent that he was going for what did he most sound like? he obviously wasn't southern sounding.
Anahata Love Can't believe there are people who don't know he's British. I thought everybody knew that long ago.
I don´t know why some are getting so offended, he didn´t criticize her, he praised her, he just expressed concern about the age difference, which is completely understandable.
And there's not even a massive age difference (17 years) compared to the 30+ year gaps that people like Michael Caine and Roger Moore had in the 80's. Christian is stil fairly young.
Let's face it: they could have cast someone in her 30s to play this role...
Christian acknowledging that Jennifer managed to overcome the shortcomings that he foresee was actually a compliment.
An actor tries to give a real, honest answer and everyone bashes him for having a big ego! He admitted his initial doubts but gave credit where it was due. He obviously just takes his work seriously.
Wow, Christian Bale is a really nice guy. I really like how he expressed his concerns so well and so comfortably; his concern, I feel, was valid, and he wasn't rude about it. And from what he said in the interview, it seems that his concerns were put to rest. It seems rare for an actor to respectfully have concerns about working with another, or maybe I'm just not finding any other instances of that happening.
LOL at Lawrence fans not only getting pissy over nothing, but actually having the nerve to say Lawrence is a better actor than Bale. That's practically objectively false.

How am I an idiot because Christian Bale's Batman was a joke?
The closest we've come to a good Batman is Michael Keaton, even though his Bruce Wayne was kinda lame. Bale's Wayne was *okay* in "Begins", but his Batman was laughable throughout the trilogy. He was always making the duck-face, breathing heavy like he'd just run a marathon, his head was always swirling around like he was getting ready to pass out, and his voice - oh my God, don't even get me started on his Richard Nixon-with-throat cancer voice. I went and saw TDK in theaters with a friend, and there was not a dry eye in the place when he was yelling at Eric Roberts; "He must have friendsh!"
What does nationality have to with anything? Bale's Batman just sucks. Has nothing to do with him being British. I think Henry Cavill was *great* as Superman(even though "Man of Steel" sucked), and he's British.
Ben Affleck isn't gonna be any better as Batman, but that's only because David Goyer and Zack Snyder are gonna turn him into just as big a pussy as Bale's.

I can understand how people can be surprised, since he is a method actor and play american characters a lot he keeps that accent during interviews. If you look at interviews from when he filmed Batman he talked as Bruce Wayne. To be honest when I found this video I wondered if this was his real accent or if he was in role. I knew he was British btw.
wonka320 It's no surprise to me but the films he makes that are popular in the U.S. he uses a North-Western American accent. I don't think I've ever seen him use his own accent.
Laraischibi Being a method actor (he says he isn't) and keeping the accent all through filming a movie (which he does out of necessity) are different things. ;)

Christian Bale was very respectful to Jennifer. He acknowledged her talent. No other 22 year old could have played that role as well as she did and he recognised that. Jennifer is a brilliant actor and Christian agreed.

Mr Bale is truly a brilliant actor & not just the body transformations he does (Machinist) but his performance are always fantastic. American Psycho remains my favourite but in every role he is flawless
Sadly the 2 movies of him that I have watched were Dark Knight and Terminator Salvation. the first was ok but heavily overshadowed by Heath, the latter was downright abysmal.
I haven't seen American Hustle but planned to. Hopefully that will change my opinion.

erick aguero Jennifer Lochner I know... my friend who is a huge fan of Bale mentioned that 2 movies... I might watch them. I'm just saying that since the only movies of him that I've watched were Terminator and Dark Knight trilogy, I can't help but rate him rather poorly as an actor.

I'm glad that Lawrence did a good job. But Bale did brings up a valid concern. Honestly, when I first heard the casting, I was wondering why they would cast someone so young, when the real life person her character is based on was in her 40s...closer to Bale's age. And there are soooo many actress in their 40s who could have played that role. But Lawrence did good.
Kenzo Lee They constantly cast this girl in roles she's too young to portray. At least in my opinion. Yes, acting is about transforming, but its also about being believable. I haven't seen it yet so Im just talking but I wanna see if she pulls it off.

Vaaman Burr I agree. I thought she did a good job in Silver Linings Playbook, but she still seemed really young to me, especially against Cooper. As for American Hustle, again JLaw did good with what she was given, and I understand now that they were going for the 20-something trophy wife, but I would have preferred an older wife to play against Bale.
Kenzo Lee I'm actually not sure who Lawrence's character was suppose to be. Because in real life her character was older than Bale's character. I think Jlaw's character was just made up from O'Russell's twisted mind

I thought Jennifer Lawrence was good but not great in American Hustle. Of all the characters, she was the one I felt that was kind of miscast because she did seem too young for the person she was playing.
I haven't seen the movie but looking forward to, but without the knowledge of her actual age, I think Jennifer could pass as late 20's
In the original story, the ages of the wife and mistress was switched i.e. Jennifer would've played Amy Adam's character if it was true to the real story. Russell switched the ages, because he wanted to see how she worked with Christian Bale. I didn't think she looked too young at all--the character had a young son, so if she was a teen mom, then she would've been 25 in the movie, tops. I just saw the movie and thought she and Amy were both really good. Didn't really like Cooper though.

he wasn't trying to bash her at all,he said the truth...she was too young to play his wife and if any other 23 year old actress tried to do that it would be a mess but Jennifer is very talented....she can go from playing Katniss in The Hunger Games who is a teenager to playing roles ment for 30 year old actresses and not make it look weird
Claire Keraudren It wasn't her best performance. It was better than almost any other actresses best performance, but it wasn't her best. Which is why she won an Oscar for Silver Linings Playbook, but did not win one for American Hustle. Not to say she didn't do a great job, because she did.

rajna maravic Big deal, there's a 17 year age gap between the two of them. She wasn't too young to play his wife at all. Michael Caine had female co-stars 30 years younger than him, so did Roger Moore and loads of other actors in the 80's.

I love Christian Bale *-* and I'm most likely going to see this just because he's in it. One of my fave actors for sure. I can see why he would have his doubts about the age difference.
For the love of God, so now everything that is not worship of Jennifer Lawrence is jealousy and a huge ego. He didn´t seem arrogant at all and there is nothing he said that could be taken as pretentious, there were a lot of people that also thought it was weird that she was cast in this role, and it was not about her talent but about her age, and he said he talked about how to work things up with both of them, not behind her back. Jennifer is a great actress, and he is a brilliant actor too, with nothing to be jealous about.
She can be good, but she has defenitely mailed it in on more then one occasion, ask any xmen fan

Mr. Bale is a talented performer and wants his movies to be exceptional. As such, expressing he had honest concerns about any aspect of the movie is understandable and very human. Please, if we want people to give honest interviews it's hardly conducive to nit pick every thought they had. Let them speak. Viewers learn by listening not my knee jerk criticizing.
***** It was not a prosthetic gut. And no, he doesn't seem like "a self obsessed nut" at all. If one rant defines a person for you, then that's pretty sad... Even if you don't care about the circumstances of that rant or comments of people from that film or movies in general, and even if you ignore his immediate regret and apologies, and that no actual harm was done to anybody or the production, and that the rant was highly unusual behavior for him... You might still consider the rather obvious fact that those few minutes, years ago are not the whole person. And how the guy is praised as a lovely human being by countless people who have worked with him or otherwise spent time with him. Or you might be a rare case of a perfect human who has never done anything wrong in their lives, and are therefore incapable of understanding that normal people are not as perfect as you. ;)

I just watched the movie again and I don't blame him for being concerned. Who knew she had this in her? Who could have guessed? I'm amazed again! Her nail play. . .her eyes when the guy asked her how she would do the room..wow. As for Bale- I have always admired him as an actor- this movie made me fall in love with him.

A lot of ppl don't like the way he is, but I think that when someone is as passionate about his/her acting as Bale is, u r naturally going to be a passionate person with very real feelings and emotions ...and remember that not all emotions r good ones. He is (imo) an amazing actor ...he brings characters to life in a way that a genuine and professional actor should. I think that if he wants to be concerned about the other actors he is working with then he should have that right, considering his passion and his perfectionism. After all he is trying to deliver something great to the audience, most actors aren't that considerate.

I watched this awhile ago and thought just cause he complimented her skill in this interview doesn't change the fact he complained to their boss. Even if he felt the way he did (and I agree it probably would be most concerning to someone so accomplished) he still shouldn't have been saying that stuff to the Director.
I believe Bale being such a success and great actor (and I'm actually a fan and always thought he was wonderful) that his words would normally be the door for most other less famous actors and actresses.
If she was anyone else besides Jennifer Lawrence (who happened to be hand picked by the boss man himself) she'd probably be a gonner.

Joanie Chachi What "nasty comments" are you talking about? There were none in this or any other interview I've come across. In fact, I've yet to see or hear "nasty comments" from Bale about any actor/actress, and he has been very complimentary of Lawrence, too. And Lawrence of him.

Christian Bale is rumoured to be a knight mare to be around on set but I’ve never seen an interview with him where he is bored or sullen. He’s always full of enthusiasm for what he’s promoting.
If he were a nightmare he'd never get to work with the same people again and he's worked with some people more than once.

I thought she was a little out of place in this, and she really overact, I was not buying her character. She is pretty good a mystic and does a fine job in Hunger Games, But this role was way over her head.

I kinda feel sorry for these actors, even though they have great careers, they get told they don't deserve Oscars etc that they win, by us the public. Sometimes you can be one of the greatest actors around but someone else just deserved to win that time round, doesn't mean their better. Well he says to her I married this young single Mother etc. and Danny was not that old so I thought she was supposed to be seen as sort of young and naive having married a con man who cheats on her and is likely the cause of half the anxiety he resents her for having and wants to discard her for the mistress she has to remind him they fell in love that's why she had married him but she wasn't involved in his work like Sydney was so they were not as close didn't have that shared excitement. Amazing to see Bale slimmed back down again how he did so many body transformations with his weight throughout his career I will never know.
