Hi, thanks for the video. I don't understand why you calibrate the meters with the bias pot not in the center? Now you have calibrated the meter relative to the position of the bias pot you had it in, right?
I explained in the video - I calibrated Type I and Type II with the pot in the middle. However, as TDK MA is 2-3 dB more sensitive on the highs than the Sony XR tape, I calibrated exactly to the position I observed on the brand new Sony TC-KA3ES. It should be like 4pm if comparing to the clock. In that case when you will calibrate Sony metal tape the pot will be in the middle.
Hi, I have a Pioneer CT-S420 and would like to calibrate it for Maxell UD XL II, adjust the bias and optimize Dolby B and C. I have a Nakamichi audio analyzer but since I am new to electronics I don't know how to adjust the calibration. Can anyone help me? I made pictures of the PCB that I can send, but which one is for what?
it's a pity Sony produced such amazing well build decks with indifferentiated calibration for the two channels. I own a Teac V5000 and a V970X, the latter being full of plastic: they both have separated bias and rec level for Left and Right channel and V970X to me has very crispy sound
in 99.99% per channel calibration is not needed. Analog world is not precise. You just live in the age of digital devices and trying to compare everything by that standard.
@@hifirulezzz I'm 49 years old and I spent my youngest life that impressed my mind with reel to reel Revox A700 and Sony and teac decks my father owned. He had also a Sony 666es which didn't even had the signal for calibration. I told you I'm comparing sony decks with what I used to have and still have. Moreover I owned a SonyTCK 75 which didn't have separated bias but at least had separated rec level. I well remembered that when I changed for Teac brand with V 5000 I used to had better balanced recording with Fe cassettes in term of high frequencies on both channels. So for incompresible reasons Sony made poorer choice later.
Another great video!!!
Thanks, Steve!

Start from obtaining a service manual. It has step by step instructions. Check the hifiengine website.

@@blackimp4987 Ok, check my latest video when Nakamichi recording and it even does not have external bias adjustment. I hope you will enjoy it.
@@hifirulezzz as always :)
