This video was a very sweet surprise. I don’t remember if you had already mentioned doing something like this. But after really enjoying your recent videos on the American and British Duofold pens, I was thinking to myself how a video on the Duofold design inspired pens would be fun to watch. So, here you give it to us all.
I had the the Moonman M600s, but gave it away. The Jinhao Centennial 100 looks extremely nice and I think I’d like to have the red or orange one of the model.
Of your pens shown here, I have the very same Conklin Duragraph Forest Green, the Nettuno Black Sands (I decided to buy it only after watching your review of your pen 🙂), the red Pilot Lucina and a clear demo Opus 88. And oh, also the PenBBS 355, one of only 6-7 Chinese pens I cared to still keep in my collection.
The Divine Design pen appeals to me a lot. Wish I had one. I feel the same for the Tibaldi Perfecta and Filcao Mini pens. I find them both very attractive and desirable.
One pen that I own which is definitely inspired by the Parker Duofold is the Aurora Internazionale. It is one of my favorite pens ever. In fact, the modern Internazionale is supposed to be a tribute to the vintage model. I really want to also have a vintage Internazionale if I can ever find one I can buy.
As for the the Sheaffer No Nonsense, I wonder, because the earliest Sheaffer flat top models began in the early 1920s. So, who inspired whom, or was it almost somehow a simultaneous design decision by both Sheaffer and Parker? In any case, both have given us some of the most memorable fountain pens made in history.
Thanks for making this video. Endlessly enjoyable material for me to watch at leisure.
Paulo, just one question: is your vintage Aurora 88 Nikargenta still working nicely without any issue?

The approach to this video was kind of uncommon. I really wanted to make a video on pens inspired by the Duofold (one of my favourite pen designs ever and I recorded this one. It was the first of this series. While I was recording I thought "it makes no sense to talk about pens inspired by a model without talking first about the "original" model". So after this one I made the other three over several days. After that I scheduled them in the order it made sense to me.
The Sheaffer No Nonsense... It is really something I am not sure where it fits. It is an inspiration on vintage... but... in the end the pen choice are my criteria, based on a personal and limited collection. I can't be 100% sure of many things. But sometimes this is fun to do. To study the history and try to make comparisons based on that history.
The Aurora Internazionale is a beautiful pen, both the modern and the vintage.
About the Aurora 88... What do you mean? This sounded like some thought transfer between us. I emptied it and I was flushing it last night and some ink came out of the "breather hole" on the side of the barrel. Maybe it was my fault and it was I who let some inky water get inside that hole while flushing or if the piston seal is failing. I hope it is not. Now it is drying. Next time I fill it I will use some Parker ink to be really safe and washable and use it only at home to search for leaks. I hope it isn't failing, because if it is it seems to be too complex for me to fix on my own. If that happens it will rest in a pen case forever, because even not functional, it is an iconic pen. If that happens, it will be the time to the 2CartK to come into play because it is kind of perfect without the problem of a vintage piston system. In that case I'll need to investigate if the nibs are interchangeable, because I prefer the stiff nib on the 88 to the softer on the 2CartK).
So, what do you mean, why did you ask? Did you have any problem with your 88?

@@OdE-ObjectosdeEscrita …I really love and admire your very thoughtful and sensitive, but also logical and practical approach to your video topics and the way you say you often decide to make the videos.
It just so happens that I never get bored of them. And always find plenty to interest and entertain me.
I have a four flat top Sheaffer’s (excluding the No Nonsense) from the 1920s and ‘30s. Very vintage-y pens. The No Nonsense was one of my starter pens in life. And I still (own two) and really feel very fond of the pens. Excellently made and absolutely reliable writers. In any case, flat top designs were the norm before the Sheaffer Balance came and became a game-changer. Same with the PFM with its own many innovations in design and features. I wish I knew much more about Parker as I do about Sheaffer. But that’s because I just happened to have bought, used and loved lots of old Sheaffer pens. But I’ve learned much about Parker from you. The Duofold is truly an exceptional and everlasting design and look.
About the original Aurora 88..I ask you because of the reason you rightly suspected.
I had once mentioned in your video, and also Waski’s that I bought two of the original 88s. One, a Nikargenta w/soft flex-y nib, in very good condition overall. My ebonite section and piston knob were of the same shiny black color as the celluloid barrel, with no fading of the color. And the other an 88K with a firm F nib and the gold-filled striated cap. The 88K arrived with an already failed piston mechanism. The seller never told me the truth about it. So, because I cannot repair it myself and have not yet been able to get it professionally restored, the pen is lying unused, but never unloved.
Now, after two years, my silver Nikargenta 88 is failing. The piston doesn’t work like before, and there’s a leak in the chrome trim ring separating the barrel and section. I believe Waski has a similar problem with his pen. It is so sad. I’ve read in some places by owners of these pens how the vintage 88s are rarely if ever restored by a majority of online sellers. And the pens, even when sold in good working order, sooner or later will fail and need to be properly restored by able hands. So sadly, both my 88s are now basically unusable. I’m so depressed about it.
This is the reason why I’m now convinced that as iconic, beautiful, desirable and collectible as the original Aurora 88 pen undoubtedly is, it is actually far more sensible to buy the cartridge/converter filling vintage Aurora pens like the Aurora Auretta, Duo Cart, 2CartK, and the Aurora 98 (whether c/c or with the captive converter style piston mechanism) than the 88 with such a fragile and difficult to repair piston system. I will never regret buying and will always love my old 88s, even if I cannot use them anymore. But everybody should be aware of the proven negatives of the pens, as well.
I really hope the problem with your own 88 goes away soon.

@@sajjadhusain4146 Thank you so much for your words. I do this because I love pens. My organization is terrible, many times there is not a logical way to organize the videos or the sequence of videos. But I keep doing them. I am so glad you enjoy them!
I finished cleaning the 88. I think the problem may not be real. Yet. Someday it will happen. Those systems don't last forever. I think the cartridge versions are much more reliable. That is one of the reasons I almost always prefer cartridges. I don't need to have special knowledge or expensive materials to repair. If the cartridge fails I just need to replace it with a new one. That said... I would recommend to search for the 2CartK (or the apparently equivalent 888) to still have the very classic design but being a cartrige filler. The Aurora cartridges are no longer available: no problem because Platinum ones fit and solve the problem.

@@OdE-ObjectosdeEscrita You and Waski are my favorite pen reviewers. So, I mean every word of the deep admiration and appreciation I say about you both. You’re doing extremely well with all your recent videos. So, carry on however you want and can do them. I always like them.
Happy to know that your 88 is still alright. What a relief to hear that.
I knew you would agree with what I said about the clear advantage of buying c/c fillers, especially I think with vintage Aurora where the option exists. That’s why I mentioned the examples of Aurora models that are safer to buy than the piston 88s that I adore so much. I wish I had another Auretta, and another 98, which I love as much as I do the 88. And your 88 Duo Cart will always be a darling.
Until I can find and get the 888 2CartK, I will be happy just to see yours. Show it again on video sometime. These Auroras are my absolute favorite pens ever.
edit: thanks for reminding me of the Platinum cartridges. I won’t make the same mistake again of not buying a particular Aurora pen because of the unavailability of the vintage cartridges. The bi-flux cartridges you have are excellent. Never lose them.

This is great, and a natural fit for the series on the Duofold itself. I was surprised to read that the idea for this video came first.
Growing up, I think my mental image of a 'serious' fountain pen is of a Duofold shape, perhaps also influenced by my dad's preference for a No Nonsense.
Somewhat surprisingly, I don't yet have any Duofolds or copies in my collection as yet, but that's partly because of the prevalence of gold coloured fittings on these models (understandably), where I strongly prefer the chrome look.

    • @OdE-ObjectosdeEscrita
      @OdE-ObjectosdeEscrita  2 года назад +1

Thank you. I thought of this first because I wanted to show how much I enjoy the design. After that I understood it would be more logical to show first the real Duofolds in chronological order. So the previous eppisodes of the series were born.
I think the Non-nonsense is also a great pen. But to me the Duofold is image of a fountain pen.
About the gold trim... There are some modern Duofolds with chrome or palladium trim.. But there is also the cost. They are not cheap pens.

@Ode, about your super small duofold that is tight removing the barrel. Have you tried putting some silicone grease on the threads? I find that helps with resin or celluloid pens that are tight screwing the barrel off and onto the section.

    • @OdE-ObjectosdeEscrita

Maybe it will. But I think the material shrunk a little bit. It used to be not so tight.
