Personally, I think the whole "privilege" thing is being taken too far. I'm never going to be embarrassed because I'm a white male who grew up in a nice family. Though I realize people have it harder than me in certain aspects of their lives, I think THAT'S what should be focused on: helping their needs instead of bashing "privileged" folks. It seems like we've spent so much time convincing people that we're accepting of everyone that we've gone full circle and started ostracizing those who have always been accepted simply because we've "had it easy". Now, obviously, white straight people have, well... had it easy in specific aspects of our lives. But that makes up a noticeably small portion of our lives. We're not completely different people bc our ethnicity and sexual preference is considered more "normal" than someone else's, This kind of "calling out" of people isn't beneficial in the effort of bringing us together, and my "privilege" is something I refused to be embarrassed about.
Yeah you shouldn't be ashamed, just aware, and you are and that's good. But being aware also means accepting that you've had an advantage, and you shouldn't be bashed for it. And the fact that you think it's only a small part of your life shows you aren't truly aware. Also the fact that you think it's gone too far, shows your ignorance to a real issue that doesn't affect you.
But no one is asking you to be ashamed. They are asking you to be aware of the advantages that you are given by birth and circumstance, which many people don't enjoy. These advantages span from feeling accepted to feeling safe, but many people don't think of those as advantages. They think of them as rights, but they are really privileges. I am white and not poor, so I have never felt unsafe walking through the TSA line, nor have ever worried about people thinking I was committing a crime or a criminal just by looking at me (police, store owners, etc.). I never had to work a service job to feed and shelter myself, and I have had to opportunity to go to college and then go to graduate school. Those are all privileges that I have simply because I'm white and not poor. They are not rights, and they are not accessible options to many people. Ignoring that is why people have been bringing up privilege a lot recently. People are quick to say things like, "Just try harder," "Race doesnt matter," and "You got same-sex marriage, so what more do you need?" Those are privileged statements that ignore the inherent inequalities of not having the privileged majority identities, such as but not limited to the daily fear of harm. You are misconstruing this discussion as an attack on you when it's not that at all. It's an attack on a system that grants people privilege, not based on merit or their own choices, but based on being a certain race, a certain gender identity, a certain sexual orientation, a certain income level, a certain family style, and more. The fact that people are miscontruing the discussion of privilege as an attack on them is what makes having this important discussion unnecessarily difficult. tl;dr : You aren't being asked to be ashamed; just be aware and apply that awareness in helpful ways.
no, some of the reasons that we can sit here and spending time doing this test is just by pure luck. Of course we all put effort in our lives but there are people who put in way more effort and getting a lot less.
You live in America You have running water You have a roof over your head You have never starved You have received an education You can read/write All of these people would get 100%
Miscellaneous Mind even the poor of America are more better then the poor of less rich countries. At least we ain't being constantly bombed and we're not killed if we say something about someone, look at all mocking jokes aimed at Trump.
in my opinion white straight males are the most privileged in america (not all tho) an there are little/big things they can get away with that a poc/lgbt probably wouldnt
+PyroEnderSlayer tell that to Latinos and Blacks in America. There have been scientific studies done where identical resumes one with a white sounding name like "Andy Burke" for example and one with a black sounding name like Tyrell Jackson where sent to the same 13 companies. White dude got 6-7 follow ups and I recall 2 interviews, black dude got one follow up. How is this not privilege? Same qualifications just the name was different, they hadn't even met the guys yet and automatically the white dude is advantaged. Defend these actions and go.
+GENOSHOCK white privilege doesn't mean you automatically mean you become rich, it means that poor white guy won't get killed by cops for the identical crime a black dude commits. It means he won't get pulled aside at the border like a Latino would at the US border. He won't get mocked for "being on her rag" when having a bad day at work like a woman would.
This video focuses a lot on sexuality and totally ignores ideas like domestic abuse, how much you've moved, being documented or not, being an immigrant or not, how many different schools you've gone to, percentage of school population that is your race, race of your teachers, things like that.
If you're an orphan or not, which parents were in your life, who you lived with as a child, if you depend on your friends, your parents education, their race.
And it focuses a lot on people with jobs who have graduated college. The majority of Buzzfeed's audience is still in high school, so a lot of the questions don't apply. This whole test in general is far too generic and won't give accurate results for most people, even privileged people
i don't think you should be ashamed by your privilege. if you have a lot of privilege, use your advantages to better the people around you. if you are less privileged, make the world a better place by trying to be as positive as you can.
Exactly!! And people are getting so defensive and offended by this test, I got a pretty high score and that just made me feel grateful, and remained me of people who are not as privileged
I am homeless with my family, my parents can't work, I am bullied because I'm white, have bad hair, and old stretched our clothes. Yeah, I'm pretty privileged. 👌
I'm honestly weirded out a little that everyone else of color got a much lower score. Im Asian but I got an 80 cause I don't feel discriminated against and I am straight and I'm just very fortunate I guess.
+the gourd king pumpkin my family is in poverty but the only way I can still get Internet and all that is if my family pushes back bills until we have too many to take care of and go to food banks and work more than normal. I can still get internet but there are some disadvantages to keep on having these things. I don't even have money saved up for me for college because my family used all of it to keep us from not having a home and all that.
asians are doing better than whites in every way you believe whites are doing better off than blacks. No one seems to care about asian privelage aisans are the highest earners www.pewresearch.org/daily-number/asian-americans-lead-all-others-in-household-income/ Asians make up a larger portion of the labor force despite being only 5% of the populationtable 5 www.bls.gov/opub/reports/race-and-ethnicity/archive/labor-force-characteristics-by-race-and-ethnicity-2014.pdf and only 1% of the incarcerated www.bop.gov/about/statistics/statistics_inmate_race.jsp
I got 31, however I believe I am privileged. Anyone with the ability to watch this video on their phones, eat healthy food and clean water, sleep in a warm bed under a safe, comfortable shelter, is privileged.
Tried the test myself too, and got 23 points. Even though I'm like you, I have a phone, TV, clean clothes, hearing, and a roof over my head. I feel very privileged..
Because it's used as a way to invalidate what you say, invalidate your experiences, and invalidate how much you are struggling in whatever aspect. It can be just rude. If I go up to a gay guy living in Indonesia, and say he is privileged because he is male, that's just rude, because most likely, that 'privilege' won't help him from being stoned to death for being gay- i'm acting like the fact he's male means he's "privileged", and that word entails assumptions like he has an easy life, when he does not in fact have an easier life than a black trans gay muslim whatever living in America.
Because all whites that work at buzzfeed got a strong case of white guilt. They hate their roots and want to be black so they can whine about racism even more.
I løve bands, nøt shøpping receipts In the Uk you finish school at 16:) we don't have a highschool like you guys - you either continue to A levels (16-18 befotre uni) if you passed the set of controlled exams or you get a job or a apprenticeship Also things like the healthcare/mental health questions- treatment in the Uk is (currently) free.
Also, "Privilaged" isnt always something you were born with. Privilage is something you can earn by working hard or gaining trust. a phone is a privilage and you can gain it by buying it or recieving it as a gift.
Yep, any mark is +1 privilege point. But for an example point 1 i am white male + 1 point. i am heterosexual +1 i am male +1... +3 only becouse you are white straight male and becouse you like your gender +7 points. Dont have colege loans +1. For my country is normal to NOT take loadns for school or university. got a job ... +1. Never been homeless ... +.1 I don’t rely on public transportation. well i dont, from end of the city to the outher walking 45min. I live in the middle of the city 10 min walking to everywhere wtf i will need public transportation? But doesnt matter +1. ''I have had an unpaid internship.'' I have had multiple unpaid internships.'' and this is the same question ... and i dont get wtf this is privilege to work for no money? but doesnt matter +2. I graduated high school. +1 yey the great privilege to finish high school, you are not lazy so you are privilege.'' I graduated college''. the same''My parents are heterosexual.''My parents are both alive.''My parents are still married.'' 3 more nonsence +3 points. Privilege becouse my parents are alive. +23 from noncense. and there are more just cant take that joke anymore.
the unpaid internship is a privilege because you are able to spend time working without receiving money and are working towards a wanted career. People who have less money are not able to take an internship like this because if they didn't work for money as often as often as possible (multiple jobs), they would be homeless or have no food, heat, electricity etc. To not have to worry about finances enough to be able to take an unpaid job for the experience of it is definitely a privilege.
Pretty privilege is most definitely a thing. Use ex con Jeremy Meeks as an example. He went to prison and his mugshot went viral. He made a lot of money, was cast in movies, and became a model because he was an attractive felon. Don't tell me that would happen to someone who was average looking.
@@jabathepegasus i might be going too deep now, but being good looking is about hormones, not the good looks themselves. Its like that in the animal world too. So basically an attractive man will on averege be more succesful because of his hunger to achieve, because of his hormones
Sorry I’m so privileged. My parents worked day and night so I could grow up to do something other than buzzfeed Edit: uhh why’d everyone talking about sjw’s and trump and stuff? Not everything is about them just appreciate my funny comment and move on without starting a war lol
Why do people feel like being called privileged is somehow blaming them for something? I'm straight and living in a developed country and am not homeless, that's very privileged but that's nothing to be ashamed about, privilege is just something that should be reminded about so we would feel grateful and not forget people who are not as privileged
I know exactly what you mean! Race and gender should not be accounted for, because that does not define privilege. At this current moment I am just glad to be safely home and have not been killed or caught in the middle of the political and racial struggles my country has at the moment.
I don't know why, but honestly I hate this word. It do make me feel, like because of certain circumstances that I have no control of I am a person to be blamed because someone else didn't get the chances I supose I've got. If that makes sense. And I know world is nasty place when one judges another all the time. But I'm trying not to, even thou it's not easy sometimes.
No, it wants people to sit back and think about the different experiences/disadvantages that we all may have in society based on XYZ, and to work on listening and showing understanding/empathy toward each other. Nobody should feel guilty about being privileged unless they are actively being dismissive and working to get the status quo alive.
+Dre Torelli questions like "are you white" and "are you male" are implying that if you are a white male you are privileged and that's just not the case. we are all equal in 2016.
People that say things like that are the reason tests like this are still relevant. Being white is a privilege. Being a man is a privilege. Being a person who does not believe that is true is a privilege in itself. That does not mean that this test was great, but it does make people refocus on an issue we'd rather forget. It isn't bad to be privileged, it simply enables you to reach out to others more, to change more, because the only way to equalize society is for privileged people to actively fight for and with those with less.
People act like its bad that we're "privileged". Life is different, it's okay. It's doesn't make you a bad person to be born into a rich white family and it doesn't make you a bad person to be born into a poor situation pretty much the exact opposite of that one. We all come from different places and all that matters is who we are from there and where we go. There's no way of controlling where you come from so just accept everyone and stop making assumptions of people based on that. Base it on how they are to you and to other people. If someone's kind and a good person to other people and tries to do good that's all that should matter. We should not let life desicions and backgrounds define our image of another human beings. Because in the end we're all just people struggling to be happy and we're all just as deep and whole as another person. It's just some people have a harder struggle than others. And we shouldn't hold that against anybody.
Yep! It's definitely no ones fault that they were born into ____ family or _____ sexuality, and we should all embrace ourselves (and each other) for who we are. The problems only arise when people fail to see that privilege exists and some people get it tougher than others. We need to be able to see differences and help each other!
I was born in a fairly rich neighborhood in the largest state of the most highly developed country in the world to an upper-middle class family with good social standings and lots of connections. I had and still have access to running water, electricity, the Internet, public transportation, more food than I can possibly eat, and every single source of knowledge in the world. However, since I am a gay, non-white female who works as a barista, I scored a 37/100. 10/10 would take again 💯
If you have a minimum wage job of $7.25 USD per hour,40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, you are in the top 8% of all people on the planet in terms of income. So think carefully if you're not privileged. #firstworldproblems
I'm a white, Canadian female & I'm privileged af but it's because my parents and grandparents worked damn hard even though they were poor, had minimal food, and sometimes didn't have beds to sleep on before I came in to the picture. They all worked damn hard.
I got a 45/100... I am ranked not privileged at all. And I thought I was, I mean I feel privileged to have a phone to watch RUclips on, and a house and clean water! I am not trapped in my country, caught in the middle if a war, or being tortured for information by a crazy dictator. I am not being held against my will. My family didn't abandoned me as a baby, and I was born at a time of flourishing technology. I would say I am pretty privileged, how about you. Just because I am of my middle-eastern background doesn't mean I am not privileged, It just means more rude, arrogant people might use that as an excuse to make them feel better about themselves; instead of just going along their day. (Same thing about being a girl)
What a ridiculous quiz. With no room for context, I could answer in some ways that have nothing to do with ethnicity or religion or sexual identity. How about let everyone be proud of who they are regardless and move on from there?
+backlash that's the OK kind of privilege the bad kind is if your white or straight or not trans that it might give an advantage in life it's probably not your fault anyways it just society and our culture these days
race, sexuality, gender, all of that does not matter. Fairness and equality is what you make for yourself not what others decide for you. My family immigrated to the great country known as America and we were not "privileged", we simple worked hard and didn't whine about how difficult everything was. know my father retired after serving over 24 years in US Navy as a Commander, my mother is a civil engineer, both my sisters are in the Air Force Academy and I have everything ahead of me being a straight A student. Anyone who blames their race, sexuality, or Gender for their shortcomings is a coward because you can overcome anything.
And why are they making people who do have a leg up on others to feel bad? It's the people who have the privileges that are successful that make the less privileged want to succeed as well. I will never put down a person who is successful because he came from a privileged upbringing. I will look down upon someone who came from a privileged upbringing and threw it all away just like you look down upon someone who is under privileged and what do anything for themselves. Buzz feed needs to step outside and stop watching so much news
well I agree with you but there are people out there that bully make fun of attic for their race sexuality and gender some people are raceist some people r homophobes some people are sexist women get payed less than men for doing the same job some kids get dissowned for being gay just because thiir less privaged doent mean they cant do anything
Being a part of the military, can possibly erase any possibility of being non privileged or add (if you're in combat and come back disabled in some form). but for you to believe that race, gender and religion does not affect what you get in life is absolutely incorrect
Bryce Shantie Wow, that would be more offensive if I was male, but really? 1. I'm from America 2. I'm a cis white 3. I'm 11 4. I'm obviously more mature than you
Tbh it's hard to answer some of the question as I'm not American. For example I don't have student loans because university in Scotland is free, not because I would be able to afford American tuitions
hmm.... are you trying to tell us the Scottish are more privileged than the English :P ? Do students in N. Ireland or Wales have to pay for university?
Pezfeo You only don't pay for university in Scotland if you are a Scottish citizen. In England, Northern Ireland and Wales university is around £9000 a year.
Yesssss. I'm a "minority with two strikes" (Hispanic and gay), and, while I can't speak for everyone, what irritates me is people who think whites are "out to get them." Racism is found across all nations/ethnicities/cultural backgrounds, and while I have felt discriminated against, I hold THAT person accountable. Not their skin color. There's also a double standard. If a white person doesn't help their fellow man, they're racist. And if they do help, they're being condescending and doing "charity" and people respond cynically.
No one is feeling bad for being privileged, it's something to be aware and grateful of. They should feel bad if they take it for granted and not contribute back to society tho
Boi people don't make fun of les privileges, in fact most people don't even of this test. Most of the time its the more privileged people flaunting their affluence over the non-privileged
I had 29 out of 100. My friend said "But your white" Just because I'm white doesn't mean anything. I'm Latina and have been made fun of a lot for it I'm also Poly sexual and have been made fun of for it and I haven't had the best life. I also have realized that their are more people who have gotten less then me and I will never experience what they have but I want to let everyone know don't judge anyone until you get to know them. Thank you
I got a score of 37 People tell me I'm privileged just because I'm white(but I'm more than half Macedonian), I went to a private school, and my parents have always had a little more money than we needed. That's just what you see on the outside of me. I know there are people that have it worse than me. I do not consider myself more able than anyone else out there. My parents work hard for the money we have. They work so much actually, to the point where I rarely see them on a daily basis. I have three learning disabilities, and I struggle with Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Depression. I am in the process of finding out if I have Anorexia, OCD, and Schizophrenia. Just because I was born with a color of skin and got a better chance than some doesn't mean I haven't struggled. Just because someone is white and maybe has a little more money than they need doesn't mean they have a "good" life. Please stop looking at people's surfaces and judging them for that, because there's so
I got a 47, and have similar characteristics to your story. I think what you wrote was put beautifully. Of course I recognize that my color, my parents' money, and my schooling are things I should be grateful for and I am, but there is definitely more beneath the surface.
I know how you feel I got 32 on this quiz. I'm bisexual I've never told anyone, also sometimes I struggle with my gender. I even struggle with depression and anxiety. But everyone thinks I'm privileged because I'm white (even though I'm quarter Hispanic) and the I was born a female.
Being ashamed for having a good life is self-destructive, and shaming others for having a good life is petty. Don't shove your advantages or disadvantages in others' faces and just accept the lot life has given you. Improve your life, wreck it, keep the status quo, whatever. But don't make others feel ashamed for whatever situation they've been thrown into.
Before the holocaus: "The Jews are privileged." Before the Rwandan Genocide: "Tutsi people are privileged." Before the Cambodian genocide: "Anyone we don't like is privileged." No. No pattern there, it must just be my naturally misogynistic and racist (even if I'm Middle Eastern) mind playing up again.
sorry i have to disagree, white people here are always preferred to minorities . its actually a joke that white kids will get their jobs from white parent connections where i live here
where are the questions like "Are all your meals prepared for you daily" "Have you ever been abused by your parents", "have you ever been sexually abused by your parents" there are much more but I have a headache so I cannot be on for much longer.
alice laing they have "I have never gone to bed hungry" which is exactly like you get your meals daily and "have you ever been abused or assaulted" which clearly means by anyone including your parents. And if that has happened to you, I'm sorry
I don't have any problem with privilege as a concept, but videos like this one make me mad, and not because I'm racist or stuff. I feel as though it undermines all the hard work i pushed through, all the hardship I endured and all the grief I've felt. I know im somewhat privileged and i know that's good for me. I just feel undermined, reduced to my gender, my looks, my sexual orientation. That makes me mad, rightfully so.
If I took this test, I would be pretty high. I'm a White, Christian straight male in the upper middle class. However, I have no guilt of that. I hate it when people judge me for being privileged. My family and I have worked hard to allow me to get to where I am. I don't look down at other people for not being as lucky at me but I'm not going to look down on myself.
I hate it when people say "we've worked hard to get where we are" because not everyone has the same circumstances and opportunities, and sometimes it's not the persons fault they couldn't get to where you are. Not blaming you, I'm just trying to explain my POV.
+Vanessa _____ I see what you are saying with how some people work really hard to be successful and get nowhere and how some people don't try at all and become successful. However, my family really worked hard. My great grandfather was a coal miner just making enough to get my grandfather through school. My grandfather became a sheriff and started a scuba diving business. My father worked at that scuba shop, worked throughout college and made his way throughout the ranks in the Air Force. He now flies planes for delta. In three generations my family went from the bottom of the economic scale to the upper middle class. That's why I believe in capitalism so much. It may not be a guarantee to wealth and may not be a quick solution all the time but it served my family well. It makes me believe that if I get a good education and if I work hard, I can become successful and allow my children to become even more successful.
+Jaime Rodriguez Even though that's what they were born into they still have some type of privilege such as their ethnicity, nationality, religion etc..
A child sex slave is privileged because of their ethnicity, nationality, religion etc? God damn you regressives are the most bigoted people i have ever seen. I bet even a literal nazi would hesitate before saying that about a jew.
@First Last Thank you, for giving me these examples. I've never heard about the first thing before, but I looked it up and found out, that it is a regular occurrence from some judges to decide like that. This surprised me, but I know too little about it to really discuss this. And the other topic also seems quite complicated so I won't get into it. Thanks again for these examples.
The questions are really american and adult oriented. I've been mocked for my accent in english by other french people, for exemple. And in France no one has a car in highschool or only for the last 5 months cause the driver licence is for people above eighteen only. But I have been really chocked to see "I'm a man" in the list. I do not feel less privileged because of my gender. I'm glad and proud to be a woman. The problem is the negative reactions you face because of being a woman and some (yes, very privileged) women never experience those reactions. And by the way, there's no questions about health and hygiene issues. The goal of that test is interesting, though.
Ikr, I feel like my score was heavily put down because I'm a woman and bisexual, A) Being Bisexual is normal and no one even cares B) I believe women are BETTER OFF in society than men.
The best colleges in my country, the ones that most of rich kids go for are public, they are free so I think this question don't apply for Brazil. The same goes to the car thing, we are not allowed to have one until 18.
You should though, because when you dont it makes you the type of person who ant relate with other people. You have to acknowledge your privelage for sure!
I'm a white cis-gender Christian female and this quiz told me I'm underprivileged. We need to stop this "I'm entitled to everything" attitude because it's just damaging to society.
Did I mention that my biological father sexually and emotionally abused me for years? The court let my mom keep me and raise me right, but I'm still not asking for the world to bow at my feet.
Why is the guy with the highest score acting like being privileged is something to be ashamed of. So he was born white. So he had parents and grew up in a fine neighborhood. Why is that anything to be ashamed about?
Buzz feed doesn't really like white ppl and tries to prove so hard that their not racist so they bring African Americans and native Americans up by putting white ppl down
Woah! Buzzfeed, that's so smart! Privilege is obviously based on the tone of your skin, and what you have in your pants. It couldn't possibly be that different people of all genders and ethnicities are born into wealthier and/or more powerful families. What will we do when buzzfeed leaves? I will forever mourn the loss of buzzfeed when it leaves, for it was such a great, unbiased source for information and news.
I agree with you somewhat, but it's undeniable that white people make up the majority of western civilisation (the 'privileged' areas), so being born white does give you a much bigger chance of having a good, successful life than any other colour.
+Doctor Lyoko We're made to think that there's equal opportunity and even though it has gotten more equal there are still a select few places and people that block opportunities. It is not 100% equal and it never will be.
Elp Smith that's the thing though to have equal work for minorities and whites is incredibly inconvenient just provide equal opportunities and choose who's best for the job.
Want to hear a fucked up thing. I came into this video thinking I was very privilege. All of my African American friends say I am. All of my Native American friends say I am. All of my Transgender friends say I am. And honestly I guess I agreed, because I've been told by the media and people around me I am. So I go and take this test because I was curious. Still expecting to score high, I was taking the test I realized how not privileged I was. Only two sections where I was able to check boxes "yes I am white" and "Yes I am a man". At the end of the test I got a 27/100 which was under privileged. So basically what I am trying to say is dont let anyone, not your parents, not your friends, not the media tell you something that puts you in a box. People put me in a box just because I was a white male, but in reality I have just as much struggles as the next person. Dont ever judge a book by its cover. And if you preach that, dont ever judge a privilege of a white, male based on his skin and sex because my friends I learned and you learned today that sometimes not the case. Good Day.
I totally agree👍🏻 however as white people we must remember that the majority of the time we won't be discriminated against because of our race, while other groups like black, Asian, gay, or Muslim people (which I am) often can be.
58, black and gay. Pretty privileged. Don't let this test get you down, society nowadays, just try's to make all whites look bad. I love everyone regardless of status, gender, color, etc. "How you treat others is what should define you, not what you have."
Yes completely agree. I do agree that being white and a male can give me certain steps ahead BUT it does not determine my struggle compared to other races, religions and sexual orientations.
plus intersectionality makes a big difference.. that is why a poor black trans woman would likely have less privilege than an affluent white cis guy. it's more than just the visuals...
Ned being like 'I have unfortunately never have experienced that!'- why unfortunately? It's amazing that you've never had to do that, hopefully one day no one will have to do it! Being privileged is not a bad thing, however it's something that you should be thankful for and try to help others who have way less than you!
+Peter Parker lool my mom can't even buy food without food stamps she makes around 13k a year and it's 4 of us only way I have internet is because I'm stealing my neighbors but I get what you're saying at least I got a roof
Sabreena Oakley Tell me how being a pakistani woman has made your life bad please. Feeling "afraid" because of racism isn't a bad life. Your statement is invalid
Sabreena Oakley So your whole life has been "bad" because people have screamed racist things towards you. You don't think that everyone encounters people screaming at them? From a POC to another POC, I think you need to realize how priviliged you really are, you brat.
So, I took the test and scored a 50. What I find interesting however is there is only one question about physical disabilities. I have been denied access to places, jobs, and recreational activities due to being a person living in a wheelchair. Just something I found interesting. There is so little representation (especially accurate representation) of people with disabilities.
I don't think the quiz is a good representation of "privilege." I took it and scored a 51 yet there were quite a few things that were left out. For example, my family life is horrible (which could be for many different reasons) but the questions asked about only certain scenarios like "were you bullied for your sexual orientation."
If I were to do this same experiment I would have, maybe one or two less white people to not single out the black person. Not a majority though because it wouldn't be realistic to demographics. Lastly, I'd make sure at least fifty percent are narcissistic so we have a relatable video, topping it off with the cherry of a broad title.
74 out of 100. When I see this score it makes me very grateful for the hard work my parents and ancestors put in to make me so privileged. This didn't come free. When my grandfather's were fighting in WW2 they weren't very privileged. When my great grandfather worked every day in a factory for 12 hours a day. But they built it so each generation would have it better in this country.
That's what people don't understand. Success was gained through centuries of hard work. They don't understand that success can't be handed to them they need to work for it just like every successful person had to do. they also need to realize that nothing is holding them back from becoming successful besides themselves.
+SeinTa Being heterosexual means you will always be represented in media in terms of sexuality, never feel unsafe or be discriminated against or killed for your sexuality and will never feel isolated about your sexuality growing up, in short :)
No heterosexual means (of a person) sexually attracted to people of the opposite sex. It has nothing to do with media. Actually nowadays gay people are more prominently shown in media because people are told they should feel guilty for being hetero. This is not a good thing and privilege is not real. Im white and straight and all of those things have happened to me. Discrimination is a 2 way street. And So is racism in general.
I got 19/100. Yes this test is mostly for Americans and it does need to include things like immigration status, domestic violence, and mental health, but it’s still a good test to take to reflect on being thankful. Yes I’ve had a hard life, but I own a phone, I can watch this video, I go to bed warm and now safe. The word “privileged” seems bad to most, but think of it as a thankful scale. Although I didn’t score much I am thankful to God every day that I can even live in this country. We don’t worry about a war happening a few miles away, there’s churches, soup kitchens, and our government that provides food. Gosh, I’m so thankful to be able to even comment on a video. I’m thankful I can breath without pain, that my ptsd is slowly getting better. Just be thankful and stop harassing other people in the comments please, it’s gross.
I got 51 but it wasn’t meant for a 14 year old so... I also think that there’s many aspects of life they didn’t focus in on as much as they should have.
I got 27, I am a White Canadian Pansexual Woman of Pagan beliefs. Yet somehow I still feel more privileged than this test indicates, because I have accessible healthcare, job opportunities and a roof over my head. Consider those who have less before saying you're not privileged.
I got 34, I'm a young Christian bi teenage girl, I've been sexually assaulted, I've self harmed, considered suicide, been teased for my religion, yet I feel the same as you. I know people are worse off, and understand it fully. I am so thankful for the life I have.
I got 27. I really thought id be higher. Im a young white middle-lower class atheist pansexual cis female, who has been sexually assaulted physically and verbally by a family member, tried to commit suicide & has diagnosed depression, anxiety, speech impediment & dyslexia. I feel i am quite privileged as i can get the medication and care i need for my disorders.
NightSlaya ;3; of course...do you think there are no poor/discriminated white people? they might aswell put in "blonde" if they are going to make a racist test
Lmao... you are privileged if you're white though. Yes there are poor white people. But if you took two people who live the exact same life and are carbon copies of each other, except one is a person of color and one is white, the white one is still more privileged. A poor white person is more privileged than a poor person of color.
1 year ago, I would have gotten a 90, today I got a 34. My life has changed so much in the last year, mental health smacked me in the face, my identity shifted, and I learned that my male peers will treat me differently because of my gender. It really opened my eyes to see how easily things like privilege can slip through the cracks and float away.
Tahoe Bryant it's a double edged blade though. if you work at your goals it doesn't matter where you started from, you can get to a place of privilege again. anyone can.
Anthony Curnow no honey. I’m gay, you can’t fix that, I can change my gender, but that won’t help, and my mental illnesses will not disappear, my genealogy will not change, and my physical handicap will not disappear
What I meant was more like "Oh, I am so lucky to have had the money to get to college" or "Wow, I need to stop acting so self absorbed, because I had privileges in life that some people didn't, so I should learn to appreciate that."
It's just self awareness, and it could inspire some people to go and try to change things for people who happened to have been born with less privilege
Sorry for the text wall lol
Exactly. My parents worked hard for me and provided for me so that I can pursue my dreams. I should be proud and thankful for that, not ashamed lol
Why did you say folks
Am I the only one thinking that they are pretty privileged for just being able to sit there.. To just make a test.
EXACTLY 😆
Els E exactly
Exactly!!!
Els E yeah but most of them had to work for it
no, some of the reasons that we can sit here and spending time doing this test is just by pure luck. Of course we all put effort in our lives but there are people who put in way more effort and getting a lot less.
Got 100 because I'm Asian. Any lower would be unacceptable.
I got 45. Damn my parents are FURIOUS
hahah
my score doesn't matter, because I'm white and i already have a future since I'm privileged.
I got a 97 and mother is going to kill me
Whelp I got 32 lol
You live in America
You have running water
You have a roof over your head
You have never starved
You have received an education
You can read/write
All of these people would get 100%
cool cool
I live in America and I can not relate even if I tried.
Miscellaneous Mind even the poor of America are more better then the poor of less rich countries. At least we ain't being constantly bombed and we're not killed if we say something about someone, look at all mocking jokes aimed at Trump.
i live in finland so i would get 150%
Marco Cepeda you don’t know that. You can’t just assume that everyone that has a job and lives in America are privileged.
in a way there nothing wrong with being privileged whats wrong is denying it and scting like it doesnt exist
in my opinion white straight males are the most privileged in america (not all tho) an there are little/big things they can get away with that a poc/lgbt probably wouldnt
+Salimah Muhammad this^^^
+PyroEnderSlayer tell that to Latinos and Blacks in America.
+Salimah Muhammad most straight white guys I know grew up poor on a farm. So much privilege right?
+GENOSHOCK white privilege doesn't mean you automatically mean you become rich, it means that poor white guy won't get killed by cops for the identical crime a black dude commits. It means he won't get pulled aside at the border like a Latino would at the US border. He won't get mocked for "being on her rag" when having a bad day at work like a woman would.
This video focuses a lot on sexuality and totally ignores ideas like domestic abuse, how much you've moved, being documented or not, being an immigrant or not, how many different schools you've gone to, percentage of school population that is your race, race of your teachers, things like that.
Wether you've ever flown at all, if you even have the documentation. Blah blah blah
This whole test in general is far too generic and won't give accurate results for most people, even privileged people
it missed a lot of important things that it should have talked about
that's true (probably privileged people who made it)
i don't think you should be ashamed by your privilege. if you have a lot of privilege, use your advantages to better the people around you. if you are less privileged, make the world a better place by trying to be as positive as you can.
Exactly!! And people are getting so defensive and offended by this test, I got a pretty high score and that just made me feel grateful, and remained me of people who are not as privileged
It's not something to me ashamed of but you have to be aware.
Damn, you just made my day :)
But those same people you try to help will be bitter towards you and see you as the enemy no matter what you do........
but they don't have advantages
The real question is "How does BuzzFeed still getting views?"
so that we can dislike the video.
Bots?
EVERYONE here is privileged, you are not in the middle of a war or starving in poverty, that's good enough.
I am homeless with my family, my parents can't work, I am bullied because I'm white, have bad hair, and old stretched our clothes. Yeah, I'm pretty privileged. 👌
you have accesses to the internet so i don't believe you
I'm honestly weirded out a little that everyone else of color got a much lower score. Im Asian but I got an 80 cause I don't feel discriminated against and I am straight and I'm just very fortunate I guess.
+Alexandra Thompson Seems legit.
There's no need to feel ashamed. Accept, utilize and appreciate what you have.

I got 31, however I believe I am privileged. Anyone with the ability to watch this video on their phones, eat healthy food and clean water, sleep in a warm bed under a safe, comfortable shelter, is privileged.
well we are going based off American privilege and still many people that have phones now could've not been able to at some point in their life time
yep girl, same
Tried the test myself too, and got 23 points. Even though I'm like you, I have a phone, TV, clean clothes, hearing, and a roof over my head. I feel very privileged..
I got 31 but I have been homeless, lived under the poverty line and had racist things said to me.
completely agree even though I got 17 out of 100 aha.
Why do people act like having privilege is a bad thing?
They hate their roots and want to be black so they can whine about racism even more.
it’s not bad but it blinds you to a majority of the world’s struggles
Kaycee Yeah you’re privlaged.
Because they think it’s real, it’s not.
i got a 46 and i couldn't really answer some of them because im 14 and never had bills to pay or a job so i dont know
i got a 48 cause i'm 13

Same. Ugh.
This quiz will only work If you are over college age and American. -A under eighteen British person who tried it.
Haha, you're right. There's questions about student loans and bills.
For those questions I just put what my parents had to go through from the time I was born to right now because I'm still in high school
I løve bands, nøt shøpping receipts In the Uk you finish school at 16:) we don't have a highschool like you guys - you either continue to A levels (16-18 befotre uni) if you passed the set of controlled exams or you get a job or a apprenticeship
Also things like the healthcare/mental health questions- treatment in the Uk is (currently) free.
It works for British people as well..
same
I Probably Would Have A More Accurate Score If I Was An Adult
Also, "Privilaged" isnt always something you were born with. Privilage is something you can earn by working hard or gaining trust. a phone is a privilage and you can gain it by buying it or recieving it as a gift.
+Cale Cale not the same thing at all.
+Cale Cale you don't know what a privilege is. A privilege is something given to you, if you worked hard for it then it's not a privilege.
No honey.... Different type of privilege.

I'm crying because this is so American it's surreal. You guys love finding labels for everything and everyone lol.
Anyone else notice how biased and 'set-upish' the questions were for the quiz?
I also had a hard time deciding whether to check or not check some of the boxes. Some things are more complicated than a yes or a no.
What gender?
Max Diaz yeah
the unpaid internship is a privilege because you are able to spend time working without receiving money and are working towards a wanted career. People who have less money are not able to take an internship like this because if they didn't work for money as often as often as possible (multiple jobs), they would be homeless or have no food, heat, electricity etc. To not have to worry about finances enough to be able to take an unpaid job for the experience of it is definitely a privilege.
"I find myself to be physically attractive." That has nothing to do with privilege. That’s a matter of self confidence. Smfh
It Kinda Does Cuz Some Ppl Aren’t Like You
pretty privilege bruh
Pretty privilege is most definitely a thing. Use ex con Jeremy Meeks as an example. He went to prison and his mugshot went viral. He made a lot of money, was cast in movies, and became a model because he was an attractive felon. Don't tell me that would happen to someone who was average looking.
@@jabathepegasus i might be going too deep now, but being good looking is about hormones, not the good looks themselves. Its like that in the animal world too. So basically an attractive man will on averege be more succesful because of his hunger to achieve, because of his hormones

people are salty af
I know exactly what you mean! Race and gender should not be accounted for, because that does not define privilege. At this current moment I am just glad to be safely home and have not been killed or caught in the middle of the political and racial struggles my country has at the moment.
I don't know why, but honestly I hate this word. It do make me feel, like because of certain circumstances that I have no control of I am a person to be blamed because someone else didn't get the chances I supose I've got. If that makes sense. And I know world is nasty place when one judges another all the time. But I'm trying not to, even thou it's not easy sometimes.
Because people have built people that way. That's why

If you a white man shut up you better than us acknowledge your privilege (sarcasm)
Instead of bashing privileged people, we should find a way to improve the quality of people for people who aren't as privileged.
That's the point of this video/quiz.
It's not, it's just shitting on people who are 'privileged' due to something they can't control.
Wow. Someone with logic and a positive, realistic mentality. You're rare.

Also your religion does not hold you back either
And why are they making people who do have a leg up on others to feel bad? It's the people who have the privileges that are successful that make the less privileged want to succeed as well. I will never put down a person who is successful because he came from a privileged upbringing. I will look down upon someone who came from a privileged upbringing and threw it all away just like you look down upon someone who is under privileged and what do anything for themselves. Buzz feed needs to step outside and stop watching so much news
+Dennis T THANK YOU!
well I agree with you but there are people out there that bully make fun of attic for their race sexuality and gender some people are raceist some people r homophobes some people are sexist women get payed less than men for doing the same job some kids get dissowned for being gay just because thiir less privaged doent mean they cant do anything
Being a part of the military, can possibly erase any possibility of being non privileged or add (if you're in combat and come back disabled in some form). but for you to believe that race, gender and religion does not affect what you get in life is absolutely incorrect
One of the questions is ‘are you a man’
Being a man is a privilege. Is like being straight, they will stop being so when discrimination ends
@@escupetube what? Being a man means you have a higher chance of being killed, and being less protected then society.
@@LS-qt9bo not to mention that you would have to work more on average
Yes. Your point is? Being a man IS a privilege.
Banana Jones no it isn’t, as a man the world’s against you.
I feel like this test only works for people living in the u.s.

Wow, that would be more offensive if I was male, but really?
1. I'm from America
2. I'm a cis white
3. I'm 11
4. I'm obviously more mature than you
isi it doesn't work for anyone
Yep, ppl can't call you a "fairy" if you live in Japan, for example, because they would probably talk Japanese, in this case
Well that kind of means you are more privelaged than the rest of us.
Me too in Iraq college is for free
Nico wait REALLY!! im movin to scottland. i really need my collage/univercity paid for
Yes let me feel shameful for being a straight white man.
Not even close to being what this was trying to accomplish.
+The_Left Behind Kind of is. They used their own employees on their own serve scripted to make their own video.
AndrewJC00 How do you know it was scripted?
Anyways, this wasn't meant to shame anyone, you guys are really missing the point here.
***** You shouldn't be ashamed of it. I'm Hispanic but I look white and I'm proud of it.
The_Left Behind I'm not saying it was scripted but it's definitely demonizing white people when it shouldn't.
I feel so privileged to have a RUclips channel with 17 million subs dedicated to being racist to me.
You should never feel ashamed of being born with more opportunities. What a joke. Just do your best to help the people who aren't as fortunate!
So true!
...And that's why we all hate Buzzfeed
CountryMusic52 agreed. Just awareness helps
so is this a competition now?
It's always been a competition to these people.
+End my life "these people" hahahaaaaa
since when has it not been? Wake up.
EXACTLY
This is what we call the "Oppression Olympics"
People also shouldn't make others feel bad/guilty for being born with 'privilege'.
No one is feeling bad for being privileged, it's something to be aware and grateful of. They should feel bad if they take it for granted and not contribute back to society tho
The only privilege people can be born with is money. Assuming privilege because of race or gender is both sexist and racist.
Boi people don't make fun of les privileges, in fact most people don't even of this test. Most of the time its the more privileged people flaunting their affluence over the non-privileged
People with privilege make people without privilege feel bad without even realising it.
Rach Elle Facts matter more than feelings
I had 29 out of 100. My friend said "But your white" Just because I'm white doesn't mean anything. I'm Latina and have been made fun of a lot for it I'm also Poly sexual and have been made fun of for it and I haven't had the best life. I also have realized that their are more people who have gotten less then me and I will never experience what they have but I want to let everyone know don't judge anyone until you get to know them.
Thank you
Just enjoy your life, think for yourself and don't take fake privilege test just to please professional victims
This test is bs, also what is poly?
Wait so if you’re white and Latina where are you from?
@@rexdilligam6261 most likely brazil.
I got a score of 37
People tell me I'm privileged just because I'm white(but I'm more than half Macedonian), I went to a private school, and my parents have always had a little more money than we needed. Please stop looking at people's surfaces and judging them for that, because there's so
Much more underneath.
I got a 47, and have similar characteristics to your story. I think what you wrote was put beautifully. Of course I recognize that my color, my parents' money, and my schooling are things I should be grateful for and I am, but there is definitely more beneath the surface.
The same story except I got a 36
I know how you feel I got 32 on this quiz. I'm bisexual I've never told anyone, also sometimes I struggle with my gender. I even struggle with depression and anxiety. But everyone thinks I'm privileged because I'm white (even though I'm quarter Hispanic) and the I was born a female.
Hispanic is not a race
Being ashamed for having a good life is self-destructive, and shaming others for having a good life is petty. Don't shove your advantages or disadvantages in others' faces and just accept the lot life has given you. Improve your life, wreck it, keep the status quo, whatever. But don't make others feel ashamed for whatever situation they've been thrown into.
Amen.
Well said
I think the point was to be happy with the privilege that they have. The statements are phrased that way.
Amen
Someone's going to get triggered by reading this.

+Zandrous Lmao. his video was entertaining nonetheless.
What is there to "destroy" in this video, exactly?
Before the holocaus: "The Jews are privileged."
Before the Rwandan Genocide: "Tutsi people are privileged."
Before the Cambodian genocide: "Anyone we don't like is privileged."
No. No pattern there, it must just be my naturally misogynistic and racist (even if I'm Middle Eastern) mind playing up again.

Advantages in life have nothing to do with race it has to do with who your family is and who you and or your family know.
Correlation =/= Causation
yes it does
That's not necessarily true
It's unfortunate that you've chosen a path of self deception.
sorry i have to disagree, white people here are always preferred to minorities . its actually a joke that white kids will get their jobs from white parent connections where i live here
where are the questions like "Are all your meals prepared for you daily" "Have you ever been abused by your parents", "have you ever been sexually abused by your parents" there are much more but I have a headache so I cannot be on for much longer.
alice laing there is a lot of categories for privilege it is kinda hard to include everything
alice laing Because these are legitimate questions that don't involve identity politics and therefore don't fit buzzfeed's agenda...
it's to do with your born identity, not your individual family situations
Like I said, privilege society allots you based on things you have inherently. Abuse is not inherent or related to race.
alice laing they have "I have never gone to bed hungry" which is exactly like you get your meals daily and "have you ever been abused or assaulted" which clearly means by anyone including your parents.

I feel the same way. I don't judge any of my other friends based on it but I have friends who do it to me
I hate it when people say "we've worked hard to get where we are" because not everyone has the same circumstances and opportunities, and sometimes it's not the persons fault they couldn't get to where you are.
+Jasmine EL HORRI I see your point
+Vanessa _____ So we should everyone to be the same? Sounds to me like communism.
Everyone Is Privileged In Some Type Of Way Or Form.
What about child sex slaves
+Jaime Rodriguez They never have to worry about not being able to get laid
+Jaime Rodriguez Even though that's what they were born into they still have some type of privilege such as their ethnicity, nationality, religion etc..
A child sex slave is privileged because of their ethnicity, nationality, religion etc? God damn you regressives are the most bigoted people i have ever seen. I bet even a literal nazi would hesitate before saying that about a jew.
+tommy Long the buzzfeed comment section is filled with all the bottom of the barrel SJWs. how dare those raped children be white!
I don’t know why people think that being a guy is being “privileged”.
Evelyn Turner idk i think what they are trying to say is that men don’t have to worry as much or have more advantages in life
bc it is, woman often fear men because they are perceived as the stronger gender and woman are shamed for a lot of things that men aren’t
I may me a little late, but I would just like to know in what reason you think women are generally more privileged than men.
Women can get away with a lot more things than men can
The questions are really american and adult oriented.
Valentine Durand also we don't have student loan cause our education isn't as expensive as US so also doesnt work for european
Some colleges are pretty expensive but never as expensive as the US's, that's true
Well they said in the beginning of the video "based of a system you were born into" and so it would be based off of country
You shouldn't have to recognize your own privilege. There is absolutely nothing wrong with having a good life.
No there's not, but it opens your eyes to those less fortunate.
Lol what does buzzfeed ever do to help less privileged people? All they do is sham white ppl
You should though, because when you dont it makes you the type of person who ant relate with other people. You have to acknowledge your privelage for sure!

That's what makes rich people assholes... Like Donald trump

More like:
"How to act being oppressed just to be special."
Why is the guy with the highest score acting like being privileged is something to be ashamed of. So he was born white. So he had parents and grew up in a fine neighborhood. Why is that anything to be ashamed about?
Because society tells him it's wrong
tiannamakesyoulaugh privilege is wrong. It was built on oppression
because that's how they want them to feel!
Buzz feed doesn't really like white ppl and tries to prove so hard that their not racist so they bring African Americans and native Americans up by putting white ppl down
what how some people just have the right to have more privilege
+Aamna Irfan no it doesn't because there's equal opportunity.
+Doctor Lyoko We're made to think that there's equal opportunity and even though it has gotten more equal there are still a select few places and people that block opportunities. It is not 100% equal and it never will be.
It takes all of that into account. WTF are you on about?

I got 31/100 as a white female
Ned being like 'I have unfortunately never have experienced that!'- why unfortunately? It's amazing that you've never had to do that, hopefully one day no one will have to do it! So, I took the test and scored a 50. What I find interesting however is there is only one question about physical disabilities. I have been denied access to places, jobs, and recreational activities due to being a person living in a wheelchair. Just something I found interesting. There is so little representation (especially accurate representation) of people with disabilities.
I also have a disability and was thinking the exact same thing! I got a score of a 45.
PREACH!!!
Thank you! There is not a lot of representation for us and it makes me sad how ableism isn’t treated the same as racism
The Riley Files I got 56 I also have types of learning and other disabilities
Ableism
I don't think the quiz is a good representation of "privilege." I took it and scored a 51 yet there were quite a few things that were left out. For example, my family life is horrible (which could be for many different reasons) but the questions asked about only certain scenarios like "were you bullied for your sexual orientation."
Dang... I sure do talk a lot for someone who isn't supposed to know how to 🤣🤣
Danny Pham the thing is, they left out a few questions about your life.
Daniel Leslie Lol the race privilege is there, but it's not that big. How much money your parents had/have is a much more important factor.
Apparently bullying is only bad if it’s about sexuality ( ̄^ ̄)
If I were to do this same experiment I would have, maybe one or two less white people to not single out the black person. Not a majority though because it wouldn't be realistic to demographics. Lastly, I'd make sure at least fifty percent are narcissistic so we have a relatable video, topping it off with the cherry of a broad title.
“If you have the resources and time to take a privilege test online, congratulations you’re privileged”-TJ Kirk
I admire that you acknowledge your past unlike many others in the comment section complaining and feeling targeted for being privileged
Thank you for making sense and not trying to deny your privilege but embrace the work that has been put into your life
That's what people don't understand. Success was gained through centuries of hard work. They don't understand that success can't be handed to them they need to work for it just like every successful person had to do. they also need to realize that nothing is holding them back from becoming successful besides themselves.
Well they got to build it because the previous generation got to use slaves which is a documented fact.
+Pasqal Haha. Slavery still exists
Oh boy this video is going to get a lot of hate. Keep it up Buzzfeed! Make the people uncomfortable
People tend to forget that having privilege isn't an insult
allthe banter Who is "they" ?
+SeinTa Being heterosexual means you will always be represented in media in terms of sexuality, never feel unsafe or be discriminated against or killed for your sexuality and will never feel isolated about your sexuality growing up, in short :)
black females have private when it comes to scholarships for school
No heterosexual means (of a person) sexually attracted to people of the opposite sex. It has nothing to do with media. Actually nowadays gay people are more prominently shown in media because people are told they should feel guilty for being hetero. This is not a good thing and privilege is not real. Im white and straight and all of those things have happened to me. Discrimination is a 2 way street. And So is racism in general.
A straaaaight whiiiite maaan.

yes yes yes yes

Mohammad Ibrahim that's so racist
not really
Sorry to hear that
@@allisonbryant4802 so you're gonna stat that way or what?
I just lost at least 90% of my brain cells.
I agree that it does seem sort of pretentious and cringey, but I think it is important to recognize your privilege in a sort of Thanksgiving type way.
What I meant was more like "Oh, I am so lucky to have had the money to get to college" or "Wow, I need to stop acting so self absorbed, because I had privileges in life that some people didn't, so I should learn to appreciate that."
Miranda Duke But why is that important? How is knowing that you have more than some others going to change anything?
It's just self awareness, and it could inspire some people to go and try to change things for people who happened to have been born with less privilege
Miranda Duke You don't have to know how much you have in order to want to improve others' lives. You just have to be a decent person.
OH MY GOD THAT CRY WAS SO FAKE
