Hey Ivana, Morning You need to heat the oil first and then put Cumin seeds, mustard seeds(optional though) and chilli, so your spices will give you good aroma You can also add cumin seeds+mustardseed+fenugreek seed+fennel seeds for tempering Adding a pinch of Asafoetida for better digestion. Happy cooking
Hey ivana became ur huge fan following your videos for 2-3 years now, it’s really incredible you are staying in India and now started cooking Indian as well. Great to see your videos
Heat the oil hot enough for the mustard seeds to pop; add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, green chillies, slightly crushed/torn curry leaves, followed by garlic and then onion. Take care not to leave the seeds uncooked, but try not to burn them either.
Congratulations kitchen queen ! That looked scrumptious !! Little tips : put whole spices in hot oil . The heat releases the flavours and essential oils . This is called tempering . Learn to slice onions finer . These damn onions take forever to cook . I am a very impatient cook so I spend time on prep so food gets cooked faster. Suggestions for next cook - poorie aloo ( it will be fun to watch u get the dough to the right texture )
Paromita Basu: poori aloo is also not that hard. So Ivana I want you to attempt poori aloo. Your first attempt was pretty good actually. And yes, as Paromita has said that next time try to chop onions more finer. But this is limited to only some of the items. For Dal, roughly chopped onions and tomatoes are okay but for scrambled Paneer or Paneer bhurji, finely chopped onions and tomatoes would work :). But kudos to you first attempt 😊✌️❤️
Keep trying I know you will learn to cook INDIAN FOOD excellently By the way how come you have not gone to the iconic MTR restaurant near LALBAGH GARDEN (MTR IS IN EXISTENCE SINCE 1942) - it is like going to MUMBAI NOT VISITING GATEWAY OF INDIA ENJOY AUTHENTIC SOUTH INDIAN FOOD DOSAS ETC.
Nice try... you have tried really hard... good work.. but some of the basic ones are off shoot.. you will learn them as you cook Indian food. 1) Mustered seeds, 2) cuman seeds, 3)curry leaves, 4) garlic should have put in the order when Oil was hot to crack open the mustered & other seeds...with 20 sec apart ... Otherwise mustered will be bitter ...then put the Onions, once turned into translucent then put tomotos ... than rest of all the masala ingredients , salt,.. Regarding tamarind ..you should soak it for 20 mins for better results... You need to extract the fruit (pulp) from tamarind and throw away the hard residue ...so that you don't get into your mouth when you are eating.. Never put salt into pulses before cooking... that will not cook, will remain hard seeds...
Allow the mustard seeds and jeera to splutter in the hot oil before u go in with the onions and garlic..btw I think that was too much tamarind pulp (u can squish it in the water after removing the hard bits n then add the required quantity)... allow the onions to caramelize b4 u add in the tomatoes...Spice it up a little more add tad bit more of chilli powder and garam masala
Hi, Ivana, you are great for your efforts to learn Indian cooking. Believe me, Indian cooking is not difficult. You have to get used to it with the time.
Hi Ivana, great effort!! The only visible error is in tempering the seeds... Mustard and cumin seeds need to be dropped into the hot oil for around 30 seconds to release their aroma and spice. That's why he found it a bit bland I guess, because the pungency of the mustardv and sharpness of the cumin didn't permeate the dish fully. But this was fun to watch!
Wow! you are looking awesome.....One smart and amazing MASTER CHEF!!. Namaste.....Thanks Nishtha ..... Next may be PANEER MUTTER!, DOSA or DHAL VADA.... yum yum. Thanks guys
Did you add the tamarind pulp to the dal? I thought one was supposed to squeeze the pulp after soaking in water and discard the pulp and just use the tamarind water.
Next Suggestion would be a simple potato sabji: heal oil, add mustard (usually 1-2 tsp), let it pop, add Hing/asafatida (not compulsory but helps in digestion usually only a pinch is used) add jeera/cumin 1-2 tsp (optional ), crushed garlic(optional), Curry leaves(optional). Chopped potato (I like to chop raw potato into very tiny cubes, but you can cut the way you like, you can also used pre boiled and chopped potato). Cook the potato till its crispy, cover with lid to help in cooking faster. Add salt, red chili powder, little bit of turmeric(mostly used for color and health benefits), something tangy like amchur powder or chaat masala, coriander powder and you are done. Can add fresh coriander if you like.
That is great, and it looks tasty, there is another hack to making a DAL, put onions, tomatoes, and masalas and mix well on cooker, when they get brown or golden, put your DAL and water and put 3 whistles and your dal is ready,
today i realized I need to follow my international cooking passion. Its a deep part of what I do when I travel and meet people from other parts of the world. You were the first vlogger to pop up when I searched for people who travel to the origin to learn to cook the food there, subscribed, NEED more content like this! This is also the first time it was really explained to me what the whistles in Indian pressure cooking meant. thank you.
Hey Ivan's! What an amazing job on that daal! I'm Indian and I still can't do it so I admire you so much! I love the idea of cooking videos and look forward to many more! The most important thing is to enjoy, so don't pressurise yourself into getting it right every time, you'll learn at your own pace. I'd love to see some authentic Dutch cuisine Cooked by you! A list of dishes you can try which are easy and vegetarian.. 1.Tomato chutney.. 2.Chana masala.. chickpeas curry 3.Aloo masala..potato masala curry 4.Bhindi fry/Bhindi masala ..ladies finger fry or masala curry 5.Sambar, a few ingredients more than Dal... 6.A plain chapati..round..,😁 7.Gobi masala.. cauliflower curry 8.Aloo mutter..potato and green peas 9. Well this is Dal fry...with masala... You can make similar receips with minor changes..... Without onion tomato n spices..simple Dal... Dal Tadka....Dal Palak...Dal with red pumpkin.....kaalidal...all these are amazing tasty dal's
Your dal is looking amazing like you. Great cooking. You are learning ancinet cooking. Indian cooking is as oldest cuisine as indian culture. It is mix of various culture who invade india and settled here for ever here.
Add mustard and cumin seeds first when the oil is hot and then you can add garlic and onions. You could also add some ginger and asfoetida as they are great for digestion and enhances flavor. In North India, tamarind and sambhar masala are not required.
Well done it was awesome...few tips. The main part of Indian curries is doing seasoning properly . You had to put a little bit more oil n first u shd put little mustard. Once mustard starts popping it is the indication that oil is perfectly heated. Then we shd add curry leaves followed by garlic n onion.
Oh no. The mustard seeds need to go into the oil first because they need to splutter and pop. Raw mustard seeds taste bitter and may lead to indigestion (I think). Always remember in indian cooking the mustard seeds aid in digestion as they act like those rubber balls people put in along with the clothes in the laundry machine. It aids in scrubbing the clothes similalry the mustard seeds will help grind the food and in digestion. But always always put it first AFTER the oil is heated. Simlarly the green chilis need to hit the oil. THe heat from the chilis is transferred to the Oil and its the oil that then provides heat to the recipe. Good job.
Congratz dear .your doing soo good...for the first time Indian food in India and its amazing to see you cooking..more receipe please... Ivaana ur too good next paneer receipe👍💕
Weren't you supposed to add the liquid infused with tamarind rather than the tamarind pulp itself Atleast that's what my mum does I don't know I'm no chef or anything
Liquid should go not tamarind haha.try simple dal 1.toor dal 2.toordal,moong dal, chana dal mix all And try Just boil it with turmeric, salt, chopped tomato For masala cumin seeds, onion, garlic the more u add cumin n garlic taste ll be more after masala got fried add the boiled dal and dal makhani masala try it taste ll be good this is how i used to prepare 🤓
If you like curries then try buttermilk curry. It is very simple and hardly takes 2-3 minutes. It tastes awesome. You should eat Rice with buttermilk curry and potato baaji (made for dosa). But my favourite is bhendi curry.
Tamarind pulp what we normally do the easy way take about 25grm of Tamarind and add half a cup of warm water soak it for 15 mins then smoosh it so the threads and peels gets separate and use then throw those threads n all not the water we use the water as the pulp is desolve in it not the peels. :) Tc
Nice.....basic thing in Indian cooking is always first oli then mustard seeds,Curry leaves then onions for all type of food same... Then Onion's will cook fast wen v add a pinch of salt in it and tamarind paste shouldn't add the should squeeze with water & then water only should add in all kind food... Rest of the things are v fine.... Njoy with our Indian food....
A very good attempt to try cooking Indian food. Very good, great. Now as you wanted to know the recipe of rajma and chole, it's very easy. First which ever thing you want to prepare, soak it overnight and pressure cook for about 12 whistles. The rajma or chole are about 75% cooked. Then arrange for the masala of dal fry. After making the masala add it to the rajma, but do not throw away the rajma or chole boiled water. Now boil it together for about 10 minute more. Also you can add clove powder, black pepper powder, curry leaves if like. Add tamarind/ Imli water to make it taste a bit sour according to your preference. That's it. So easy you see. You can add a boiled potato to make it thick. Try and let know. Good luck.
It seems u have cooked well. . I also know to cook it very well . cooking with interest makes it more delicious .pressure cooker cooks fast and saves lot of time .
try making plain dosa and coconut chutney... you can use ready made batter for the dosa(ID brand is good) and a kerala style thick chutney is very easy to make (if you get pre grated coconut ) your breakfasts will be sorted.
Which Dal is this? India seems to have too many varieties. But even a simple yellow moong dal tempered with Ghee & Cumin tastes delicious. Hing /Asafoetida is optional so is adding Onion tomato, other spices.
I already know you will get maximum views today, Indians and food video is an irresistible combination..😍😍😍 Well done Ivana.. the way to a man’ s heart is through his stomach, good luck in that department too..💕
That dal looks awesome! Your room-mate's recipe is complicated! Lol. My mom (we are from western UP) taught me her much simpler basic dal recipe. Me, I add some onions (about 1/2 or 2/3rd of an apple sized onion chopped into small pieces), a couple/three cloves of chopped garlic, and salt to the dal for boiling. The tarka I make is just the rest of the original onion thinly sliced, along with one clove garlic thinly sliced, one dried red hot chili pepper (yeah, I like that band too) broken into 2 pieces into the oil for a fry until onions start turning red. The amount of redness level you fry the onions to will make a big difference in flavor. I use about 3 or 4 times as much oil as you did, because the fried onions impart their flavor to the oil, and the oil imparts the flavor to the dal. The other stuff (chili pepper powder, cumin, mustard seeds, tomatoes, etc) I add experimentally. Experimenting with food is fun. Those moments when you do good enough to want to pat your own back make it all worthwhile. :) Oil, sliced onions, salt, a few dried chili peppers broken open, and your choice of chopped veggies (start with thinly sliced potatoes for practice because they are cheap and tasty when fried). Don't add the veggies until the onions are soft. Add, stir, cover, simmer on low until done. Check and stir occasionally to make sure it doesn't stick to the bottom of the pan and start burning. When you have this locked down you can start experimenting with spices. :) I live in the US and used to have my own catering business here. It is best to cook and serve food to foreigners, because they never know when you've f-ed up. "Burnt toast? No, no...this is Cajun blackened bread! A cow and a monkey taught me how to make it. And they believed in hitting their students when you made mistakes. See?" :D :D ;D!!!
1 simple recipe is " Upma " one of the simplest recipe which is very simple yet tasty. and you can have it for Breakfast lunch brunch or dinner any time u like. BTW Congrats on your first self prepared Indian Dish I know you must be feeling very proud to cook some new recipe.
Also.. one more tip.. you can grind onions, tomatoes and garlic first into a smooth paste.. then fry that paste for some time.. it will give better taste and texture to you daal.. Also.. always heat the oil first, then add all the seeds first..like mustard, cumin and curry leaves..once they are fried..then add masala.. and then the paste...
Hi Ivana, nice to see u cooking dal. You can try dal with different flavours, like palak dal, ash guard dal, bottle guard dal, tomato dal, sambar is full of vegetables u can cook easily with all the vegetables but need to follow procedure to cook. Try flavour dals. Tadka make it simple, it doesn't take much time, heat oil, put mustard, jeera, dry chilly, fry till red chilly turns the colour, add smashed garlic, curry leaves fry till light golden brown add turmeric some dhania powder & pour the dal into the pan & cover it & bring dal to boil. add choped coriander leaves. that will b really yummy.
I don't put the tamarind in to the dish..u smash them in water and filter and add the filterate on to the dish... the filterate is called as tamarind pulp not the solid residue
Yaay! FiNALLY!! I knew you would come around. Very impressive Ivana.. yes, love these videos. I would recommend trying to experiment with overhead filming techniques which will give you really good quality cooking vids. Looks like you did a great job. I usually add my dry spices prior to adding the onions just to ensure they roast well and release their fragrance. Once the black mustard seeds start popping then I add the onions. I do think you could of added more spices .. a little garam masala, chili powder, fresh ginger, more tumeric.. ground coriander and perhaps a pinch of Hing, mehti leaves or spice (fenugreek) ...don't be afraid! I always make sure to caramelize the onions and tomatoes well which brings the dal to the next level. If the tomatoes are not well caramelized then adding the tamarind pulp will give it a sour or raw taste. I never chop garlic, i always puré it since i find chopped garlic burns fast. Pureeing brings out more flavor and essence. Recipies to try: How about a vegetable pulao or kitcheree? They are simple and easy. You can even try making accompaniments like mint/coriander chutney and cucumber raita. Super easy. Samosas can be fun to make too! Great job my dear! Proud of you :-)
You are doing great. I'm going to cook dal tomorrow for my lunch. Was it brown rice along with you had dal? Try paneer masala.. I will also learn it :-)
Try some easy breakfast recepies like Upma,Poha or stuffs you like. This way you can stop eating those ready to make stuff fr breakfast. And the dal looked delicious btw.
After heating the oil first Cumin seeds and then mustard seeds were to be added before the chopped vegetables. Anyways you did a real great job !! 😍❤️ also please try kadhi or karhi I know its a little tough but since you can make the daal so perfectly So you can try that as well. Lots of love ❤️😘
Mustard seeds, and jeera should go first.Actually dhal is a very simple recipe, people normally dont add onion, tomato, sambar powder, tamarind extract. These ingredients can be added to make sambar.
Can we add the mustard and cumin seeds directly? Aren't they supposed to sputter in oil first... I'm not a chef or cook or anything just asking I've seen ppl do that. I love ivana and her videos! And I think the dal really looked good! No doubt.
Try onion postoo it's basically onions fried with poppy seeds it's a very tasty Bengali quisine and eat it with rice. WARNING: poppy seeds may make u a little sleepy later if it's the first time you are having it. Audio: when shooting in an echo environment merge the audio input and mono-stereo the output it will eliminate the echo. By the way audio was fine on the headphone.
I wish I would be there to eat your dal it's looks so delicious,I don't have any doubt about your ability to make white chick pea but bhathure maybe hard for the first time so in my opinion start with red kidney beans they are easy to make
Hey Ivana, Morning
You need to heat the oil first and then put Cumin seeds, mustard seeds(optional though) and chilli, so your spices will give you good aroma
You can also add cumin seeds+mustardseed+fenugreek seed+fennel seeds for tempering
Adding a pinch of Asafoetida for better digestion.
Happy cooking

You could make aloo dum. That is curry potatos and it is served with luchi. Luchi are such breads similar to bhatura. Its sooooo tasty.
For regular use sabji masala in place of garam masala and avoid red chilly powder if u r using fresh green chilly for protection of burning stomach
Ashish Kumar Singh which brand sabji masala?

Yes, you are right, the liquid is used and the pulp is squeezed and discarded.
Use a flat wooden ladle for sauteing, it will be easy to turn the veggies.
Awesome video as always. You should try making “Palak paneer “ next. It is an awesome dish.
Good job with dal....nxt dish Rajmah then palak paneer, Pasta (ur favrt one) nd then lookin forward to some Dutch dishes
Add a little Amchur (Dried Mango powder). It's a magical spice and gives a tangy flavor! I love it. Ask Nishtha about Amchur.
Make Aloo Gobi! Its my favourite veg dish and it's fairly easy to make. I make it at home all the time in Latvia.
If you like curries then try buttermilk curry. It is very simple and hardly takes 2-3 minutes. It tastes awesome. You should eat Rice with buttermilk curry and potato baaji (made for dosa). But my favourite is bhendi curry.

Make sesame chutney & peanut chutney as accompaniment with Idli,Dosa & Uthappam,I'm sure you will love
Hi, I appreciate you for your generous effort to cook Indian dal and keen interest on the matter.
that seems like an awesome recipe...and trust me my Dal is awesome. But this is better! Have to try this at home
Mustard jheera first and tamrid water with the pulp also add powder masala after your tomatoes have gone mush
This video was so much fun to watch! Keep these up!
Dear u have to temper jeera and mustard seeds before u saute garlic
Cooking recipe and technique aside, did you cook for the whole building?
Dal looks good! It's hard to cook Dal and you had a bumper start.
try making plain dosa and coconut chutney... you can use ready made batter for the dosa(ID brand is good) and a kerala style thick chutney is very easy to make (if you get pre grated coconut ) your breakfasts will be sorted.
All these dry spices and seeds are to be first cooked in oil then add other ingridents
Well done sweet-heart...try "PANEER" dishes next time...would love to see you cook some Dutch-Foods as well..

Oil, sliced onions, salt, a few dried chili peppers broken open, and your choice of chopped veggies (start with thinly sliced potatoes for practice because they are cheap and tasty when fried). Don't add the veggies until the onions are soft. Add, stir, cover, simmer on low until done. Check and stir occasionally to make sure it doesn't stick to the bottom of the pan and start burning. When you have this locked down you can start experimenting with spices. :)
I live in the US and used to have my own catering business here.
Your dedication level is Infinity:P
Does that comment actually mean something inside your head?
1 simple recipe is " Upma " one of the simplest recipe which is very simple yet tasty. and you can have it for Breakfast lunch brunch or dinner any time u like. BTW Congrats on your first self prepared Indian Dish I know you must be feeling very proud to cook some new recipe.

U can add Ginger and garlic paste in dal
Yes back to India vlogs 😁😁😁😁😁
Adjust the gasket of cooker so that steam may not leak outside .
Also.. one more tip.. you can grind onions, tomatoes and garlic first into a smooth paste.. then fry that paste for some time.. it will give better taste and texture to you daal.. Also.. always heat the oil first, then add all the seeds first..like mustard, cumin and curry leaves..once they are fried..then add masala.. and then the paste...
arpit jain Daal ke liye paste use nahi karte
Chile bhature is best or Shahi paneer
You can try palak ,panneer.Very simple.
Are you back to India?
Wow ivana. I enjoyed so much
Ivana.. way to go!! Loved your video 😍😍
After dal natural step is Aalu or Bhindi ki sabji.
Hey Ivana, well done on the Dal :). Please try making some Aloo ka Paratha for a nice sunday breakfast or something. Good Luck. Love from the UAE

You should have added mustard and jeera in the beginning before frying onions and allow to splutter.
mmmm yummy!!!! I want to eat your food Ivana! I love this video of you cooking it's very relaxing and refreshing ❤
Haha thank you so much!
TRAVEL VLOG IV you're welcome dear
Mustard seeds, and jeera should go first.Actually dhal is a very simple recipe, people normally dont add onion, tomato, sambar powder, tamarind extract. These ingredients can be added to make sambar.
Can we add the mustard and cumin seeds directly? Aren't they supposed to sputter in oil first... I'm not a chef or cook or anything just asking I've seen ppl do that. I love ivana and her videos! And I think the dal really looked good! No doubt.
Aw thank you!!!
Curry leaf and cumine seeds and mustard seed and raw dry spices put before garlic and Onion in oil last you can add tomato
I am so happy to see the patience you have for cooking dal in this manner. I usually do all jugaad and add the tempring in the end 😂😂😂
Aren't you supposed to use the tamarind water not the chunks
Congratulations Woman 😍👍, bangalore based Bengali 😊
Aw thank you so much!
Invite her and introduce her to our vegetarian dishes. :-)
