Well thats the most simple version...can add few vegies in with that. Then add very simple tadka at the end just cumin, hing, a green chilli perhaps if you want a bit more flavour. Can also serve with yogurt, pickle, chutney or a dry sabji or bhaji/fry which adds flavour.
Looks good for a start. Generally don't add water to khichri after it's cooked, add boiling water if u must. Turmeric powder missing, add it next time and also add hing, it gives good flavour and avoids bloating caused by dal. When you add red chilli powder to tempering, add it after you have switched off flame and immediately add tempering to khichri. This will avoid burning the chilli powder.
khichdi is very simple this one was very complicated, ingredients : 1/2 cup rice 1 cup moong daal 1tbs ghee 1tsp jeera 1tsp turmeric 1/2tsp red chilli powder 7-8 cloves or garlic 1 tomato 1/2 inch ginger process: heat ghee in cooker > add jeera and let it splutter > add ginger garlic > saute for 30 secs > add tomato and spices > saute till tomato is mushy > add rice and daal > cook for a minute in masala > add water 3 cups or 3 and a half cups > close the cooker > cook till 3 whistles and close > add ghee when u serve hot in plate
Hey ! Ivana.. Its great that you are learning to cook Indian food... Just an input for you there are no set rules in Indian cooking you can add or omit anything you like.. Of course you can't omit the main ingredients. But other than that its ones personal choice.. Hing or no hing, its up to you..
Khichadi that we eat when we are sick contains only Dal rice jeera with some oil and ghee......it is very simple When we add other stuff like vegetables...peas etc it becomes masala bhaat or masala rice
You probably know this but I still want to add this. Proper heating of oil/ghee/butter before adding spices to it is very crucial. Overheating will burn the spices, and underheating won't be able to bring out the proper flavour of the spices. In video, it looks you are adding spices a bit premature, but again it's difficult to say just from video.
Yes!!! Make Dosa! I learnt last year in India and now make here in Aus (until i get back to India in 8 weeks to eat allllll the dosa). It taked a bit of practice but its SO worth it!! My favourite dish. Nom nom nom 😄
Wow!! Look at you girl! Next thing you know you will open a chain of fancy restaurants serving veg indian food and Dutch Stoopwaffles! You are becoming a real Pro!!
Hi Ivana, I'm new to your channel and I must say I thoroughly enjoy your videos. You are simple and genuine, that's what I like the most. KHICHDI is a dish where the main ingredients are rice and lentils (daal), preferably moong daal, ratio should be 1:1. Regarding vegetables, whatever veggies you have just put them, don't think too much, potatoes, cauliflower, carrots whatever you have. And DO NOT ADD RED CHILLI POWDER, khichdi is supposed to be very light, so don't put red chilli powder. And do ADD GHEE!!! It's a must!!!
Hey Ivana. I love putting ginger in my khichdi. It gives that extra zing and if course ginger is great for weight loss. I make very simple khichdi without onions, tomatoes, red chilli. You can try it it's good. No tempering if you are sick, and it should be more watery. Moong dal is the best as it's easy on the stomach.
Hey Ivana, its wonderful cooking series you have started. I can see you have already started improving with every video. If you continue this series..i am sure you would be a better cook than most of Indians.... And yes please try your version of Indian maggie. Everyone cooks maggie according to theri taste, its really versative noodle dish..When you cook you can add touch of your culture as well... Congratualtions for continuos improvement... If you want my recommendation..i recommend you matar pulao or matar paneer (both are peas dishes)...Looking forward to your next video...
Hello Ivana....I really love this Indian cookbook series...because you always used to say that cooking Indian dishes is so hard and you finally tried your hand...I am sooo happy for you 😘😘😘 Just would like to suggest for this khichdi receipe...add green cardamom along with clove and cinnamon(because normally garam masala is the basic mix of green cardamom,cloves,cinnamon)...Atleast we bengalis use these 3 spices religiously...and ofcourse like you said..add a bit more Jeera and also can add coriander powder to make it more flavourful. But definitely try adding cardamom...and you love cardamom...that I know. And Thanks again for this Indian cooking series...all the love and support💖💕💓💗💟💞💝
Awesome Ivana😊👌Looks Yum In the first try only, you tried and made it so good wow, there was few mistakes but in first try making that level of food, Wow well done 😁👍
Hi Ivana. As someone has mentioned never add water after the rice is cooked or all the flavours get diluted. If need be add a little bit of hot water but only if absolutely necessary. After you add all the veggies, spices, rice, dal etc but before adding the water, mix everything properly and keep the lid on for a minute or so(without whistle). This ensures that the rice gets all the flavours and aromas and then add hot water. Also for khichri always use more water than what you would normally use to cook rice. Don't cook on high flame for all the whistles. It will make the khichri dry. 2whistles on high flame and 2 on low flame. Also presoaking the dal and rice for at least 30mins will make them cook faster and give a nice mushy khichri And again as someone said pairing khichri with fried papad and pickle is a must😉😉
You are so fortunate to have such a nice roomates. Next time try sambar idly. Or even can try onion rava dosa and masala dosa with chutney.😁😁😁😁 Great work done, it really looks delicious and mouth watering..👌👌👌👌 And most of all thank u for mentioning my recommendations.......😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
Add ghee in khichdi to make it moist... You doing good... You will get better. This one looked delish! Next time you can try "rava masala dosa" extremely easy!!!
My mom has a handy tip in cooking khichdi, after putting rice and daal, fill the water in cooker so that when you put your index finger in it, two of the finger sections will submerge in water. Also, the chilly powder needs to be addded last in the tadka if it burns the taste of khichdi goes bad, Try Dahi Vada it’s simple, Just yoghurt and sweet tamarind chutney with chilly on top, it’s a healthy version of Indian spicy Doughnuts , The vada can be made from ready made Gits Dahivada mix, Cheers
Hey ivana. Khichdi is mostly a satvik dish. Cooked for pujas/ vrats/ stomach probelm ( google it 🤣). So never use onion or garlic in khichdi to get the benefit of it, also orginal taste vanishes. Love to see you cook.💜
Soul Master We South Indians & East Indians does eat rice during the vrat too. We find it weird when some north Indian says that they eat sabudana pakora or paneer roll during navratri. Yes,food habits change from place to place
Kichdi is made of lentils, rice and green moong...simple..boiling of these ingredients untill its soft & littles less mushy.. and then tadka in the end..
Hey Ivana u could also make a simple lentil khichdi...just mix 1cup rice with 1cup lentils wash properly add some turmeric asafoetida salt to tasteand required amount of water mix well...pressure cook it...its ready...have it with clarified butter/ghee...its delicious...btw that khichdi looks tasty👍
Hi Ivana, nice to see you not messing the kitchen area, you looked very organised. If you would have added curry leaves, smashed garlic in tempering the kichdi you would get different flavour. coriander leaves went missing. If you add dal & rice 1:1 proportion you will get nice taste & vegetables should b balanced, which should not dominate much. Nice blog, you have improved lot. Pls make permijano eggplant. baigan ka bharta & fulka.
This is called tehri ...khichdi is the simplified version of it just Moog dal, rice, turmeric and salt and maggi masala and then tadka and served with curd and pickle....few advice 1)the rice and daal should be kept in water for 15 min before use 2) put 1 spoon of ghee at the last just before closing the cooker so that rice will not stick 3) khichdi is more thinner so add more water next time ...
hey ivana... grt effort!! just a tip.. incase u feel dat sonething is not cooked, and u want to add water afterwards to it, make sure u heat up d water and den put hot water and cook it, or give it a whistle. normal water delays ur cooking process and somewhere, steals away d flavour!! ciao!!!
Am I the only Dutch person who watches your videos? Maybe it's an idea to make a typical dutch recipe, such as 'pannekoeken' or a 'stamppot'. Really love your videos Ivana! X
Take half cup yellow moving Dal half a cup of rice wash it together then take a pan add two tablespoons of gheen add bay leaves black pepper a inch of cinnamon stick then add the Dal and rice saute it for a minute add double the amount of water and salt for taste.cover it n cook .If it is dry take a little ghee in another pan add onions brown it and garnish it .
Hi Ivana!!! Eventhough I am not a big fan of kichdi's, I think a little bit of coriander powder and also u can add a small amount of tamarind water or cut tomatoes into it. Green peas would have definitely added to the taste. Lastly u can put coriander leaves to garnish the whole thing and it will taste better if u serve alongside masala pappads. Also one more thing I would like to share is that don't pour cold water directly into the cooked stuff but instead put boiled water. Anyhow kudos for the brilliant effort. Lastly u can add some chopped garlic also into the mixture b4 cooking. After all Indian cooking is all abt one's tastes and likes with so many variations one can make out of any dish.
Don't be afraid of experimenting with adjusting amounts/levels of ingredients in cooking. It is in baking that precise measurements come into play, not in cooking. In cooking more or less of an ingredient(s) only shifts the flavor profile in one direction or another. That leads to individual chef's signature dishes. :) The reason is simply that in baking you are trying to create a warm welcoming living environment for the yeast, which is a fungus. The yeast lives, propagates, eats sugars and starches and farts. It is the yeast farts that makes the dough rise. Too much or too little of something can weaken or kill the yeast organism and lead to no more procreating. That leads to insufficient quantities of yeast farts - no more rising of the dough. :D In cooking you are actually trying to kill living organisms like bacteria and fungus in order to extend the period before spoilage. If the fungus and bacteria survive the cooking process or are introduced after cooking by dirty utensils or water that has not been boiled, the food will spoil more quickly. Don't be afraid to add too much water in cooking. You can always simmer longer and let some steam off. Well done. That looked perfectly yummy! Slice or chop into similar sizes (you choose the size and shape) the following: Ripe tomatoes, onion, peeled cucumber, green chilies, and cilantro (coriander leaves). Add salt and lemon juice to taste. Serve with pretty much any savory dish to create that extra flavor burst.
Holy moly, I'm always impressed by the quality of the comments on my videos but this is literally one of the best I've ever gotten/read. Thank you so much!
Looks tasty to me! Khichdi can be customised. There is no fixed recipe or strict rules. Put as much or as few vegetables, spices, lentils, rice, with tadka, without tadka, however you want.
Every vegetable is optional You can simply add rice+dal+salt&water and tadka(oil + asefoetida+ black pepper) for taste. That's the most basic one and mostly used! Vegetable one is a variant of khichdi MasterChef cook 😁
I like my khicdi without veggies and less spices. With just some papad or potato fries or just a simple omlet. Though on some occasions more spicy khichdi is made too but fr my sake my mom adds zero veggies. But green peas in khichdi tastes amazing.
You dont need peas or carrots. We make simple khichri. Not even oil in it. Just water, salt, turmeric, whole black peppers add to mung dal in pressure cooker. Then we make kadhi to eat with.made of yogurt.
Kichdi is the national food of india... And ivana u can be innovative with it yr way. Like add corriander leaves..fr garnish..then u can even use mustard seeds and curry leaves fr tadka..a spoon of garam masala etc...even putting some paneer cubes is awesome to taste...try it...
hi i am an indian living abroad, and just found ur channel and it is awesome, so i decided to watch it from the very first video, but ur earlier videos are in some other language, could you please point me to the first english video of yours, from there I could all the rest of following videos, thanks,
Hi Ivana! Just a thought, is there any way to wear a clip on mic for these kitchen videos? There is lots of echo which makes it less enjoyable to watch. With better sound I would love to enjoy these, as a fellow foreigner in India who can feel like I’m not alone in my kitchen escapades. 😁 Not intending this as a hate comment - you mentioned in a recent video that you’re trying to elevate production quality so I though there is a chance this might just be useful. 😊
Make alu posto. Its literally 2 main ingredients. Potato and poppy seeds. Other than that you'll need green chillies, mustard oil, salt, sugar, and black jeera. It's a bengali dish, you have it with plain rice.
Most of my Indian friends make yogurt at home . You can try that instead of buying the mass produced ones as its not healthy (thats what I was told). btw day after tomorrow we are going to india for 4 years unless dad gets posted elsewhere. Personally my sis n me are not that fond of the education system as its too tough and different than the states. We are just looking forward to eating all those snacks and spicy foods again !!
HI Ivana, greetings from Vienna, your kichidi looks tasty, yummy, ivana please try dosa next week, you can try plain or masala dosa with coconut chutney, that would be brilliant.
Sweetie, Indian cooking is incomplete without fresh coriander leaves. Add that to everything and see the magic. I refuse to cook if I don't have fresh coriander.
It can be very simple...just throw rice, mung dal, water and tumeric in pressure cooker.
Add salt too...😁
That makes sense but would it have enough flavour? Thank you!
Generally Kichidi is meant to be simple; something to be eaten when one is sick.
TRAVEL VLOG IV ya it has flavour.Just put some potatoes n other veggies cut into small pieces.
Looks good for a start. Generally don't add water to khichri after it's cooked, add boiling water if u must. khichdi is very simple this one was very complicated,
ingredients :
1/2 cup rice
1 cup moong daal
1tbs ghee
1tsp jeera
1tsp turmeric
1/2tsp red chilli powder
7-8 cloves or garlic
1 tomato
1/2 inch ginger
process:
heat ghee in cooker > add jeera and let it splutter > add ginger garlic > saute for 30 secs > add tomato and spices > saute till tomato is mushy > add rice and daal > cook for a minute in masala > add water 3 cups or 3 and a half cups > close the cooker > cook till 3 whistles and close > add ghee when u serve hot in plate
Hey Ivana,Khichdi are of many types, this one is masala khichdi, simpler ones are also made with 3-4 ingredients, but this one looks awesome 😊
Haha I guess I picked the little complicated one 🙈
Water intake is important when ur preparing something in pressure cooker dont add it later good try though u can do better as u gain experience 👍
Hey ! Ivana.. Its great that you are learning to cook Indian food...
Just an input for you there are no set rules in Indian cooking you can add or omit anything you like.. Of course you can't omit the main ingredients. But other than that its ones personal choice.. Hing or no hing, its up to you..
Hi Ivana you don't need to be that precise with khichdi....everyone has his or her own version of khichdi.
Lazy people make kichadi
What I like with khichadi... Is a fried papad, some mango pickle, and some cooling yogurt.
And then, LIFE IS GOOD BABY !!
Anant Deo if yogurt is unavailable than use ghee. Lots of..
Mavla Me well.. of course !!
Ghee is AWESOME anyways !!
I use yogurt as a side dish. maybe flavour it with a bit of cumin powder and Rock salt. 😋😋
Absolutely true..!
Khichadi that we eat when we are sick contains only Dal rice jeera with some oil and ghee......it is very simple
When we add other stuff like vegetables...peas etc it becomes masala bhaat or masala rice
Looks testy. Try "PuranPoli" dish. Its all time favorite maharashtrian sweet dist. Basically its suffted roti. Try it
I have to say, your friend is so motivator. You have the best food reviewing friend.

Soumya Kapoor it's puri bhaaji....not puri aloo...every state have different breakfast...

Great video, try a plain sabzee next, it's essential to know. Sabzee and dal is a staple combination
Thank you!
Your kichidi looks beautiful with lot of vegetables and lentils. You are making healthy Indian food.keep going.Thumbs up.
Add ghee in khichdi to make it moist... You doing good... You will get better. This one looked delish! Next time you can try "rava masala dosa" extremely easy!!!
Nice......so lovely INDIAN RECIPE. thanks
When you add red chilli powder in oil ,make sure you turn the flame off to keep its red colour as it is.
Whenever you add salt just sprinkle it while adding it.
Appreciate your efforts n all the best for next try.
Try making pav bhaji. It's easy and delicious.
We did a good job.For me I just make simple khichdi for my kids it's very healthy but my kids hate it . excited to see more cooking video.Well done.
My mom has a handy tip in cooking khichdi, after putting rice and daal, fill the water in cooker so that when you put your index finger in it, two of the finger sections will submerge in water. Brishti Roychaudhuri it tastes best with onion n garlics
Who eats rice during vrats ?
Soul Master you have a point.
Soul Master We South Indians & East Indians does eat rice during the vrat too.
We find it weird when some north Indian says that they eat sabudana pakora or paneer roll during navratri.
Yes,food habits change from place to place
Saw this and craved Khichdi! Although, I didn't follow a recipe and I'm thinking to make more of a moong dal khichdi. Let's see how it goes!
Kichdi is made of lentils, rice and green moong...simple..boiling of these ingredients untill its soft & littles less mushy.. and then tadka in the end..
Make snacks like mix veg pakode and paneer pakode.
I'm not a huge fan of pakodas🙈
Khichdi cooked with veg and peanuts 😍😍 and unlimited Desi ghee 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Green peas are not necessary... relax 😙
Yay thank you!
You are very much Indian now.. try out more Desi recepies.. 👍👍👍
ivana cooking classes, today we will learn how to make khichdi😍.
love your vlogs
Very soon, Indias fav bahu, which means Indias fav daughter in law ❤😘😊👍
LOL
That's an amazing recommendation! Should definitely do the trick of adding more flavour. Thank you!
Evana khichadi is eaten when u have loose motion. (Sometimes)🤗
Hahah
Wow ! Tasty Khichdi...😋

Definitely not. Dutchies are just less keen on commenting, Hollandse nuchterheid or something ;-) Thank you so much and haha maybe I'll try that later
You did good! This looked so yummie!
Yay thank you!!!
The simplest one is with Ghee+Rice+Dal+Salt+Cumin+water....nd this is actual khichrdi nd best for an upset stomach
Take half cup yellow moving Dal half a cup of rice wash it together then take a pan add two tablespoons of gheen add bay leaves black pepper a inch of cinnamon stick then add the Dal and rice saute it for a minute add double the amount of water and salt for taste.cover it n cook .If it is dry take a little ghee in another pan add onions brown it and garnish it .

khichdi with vegetables added in it is more tasty. Especially potato, matar and fulgobhi.

I have to say I'm not a fan of aloo in general🙈
TRAVEL VLOG IV okay, you can do it without the alu as well. It is tasty with onions too. Then its piaj posto.
Laljawab mere dost.
Make one of your favorite Dosa IVANA.. :) Khichadi looks yum btw

Love From India dear friend
Sweetie, Indian cooking is incomplete without fresh coriander leaves. Add that to everything and see the magic. I refuse to cook if I don't have fresh coriander.
ashlicious, agreed! I never cook my coriander in the dish but rather add it in once the dish is cooked. Cooking it makes it loose its taste!
Plz try Moong Dal chilla ..
Another comfort food is Rasam along with any curry and rice
I Think 4 whistle too much 2 whistle is enough for khichdi
If the cake is in the stomach, it is said that to make it in the cooker, first put desi ghee in it so that the rice will not stick in it.

Try Karnataka's famous dish 'Bisi bele bath'(hot daal rice)
Try making vada & sambar

Please cook idli masala dosa vegetable biryani

Thank you!
