Yeah mine started doing the click of death, so I opened it expecting to find a sata drive hoping it was just the usb converter that failed, so now I know to research any external drive before buying so I'm not stuck with crap like this again.
I wouldn't recommend buying external hard drives which don't have a standard SATA connector inside because some USB 3.0 controllers can fail at random moments and if a disk has just a USB connector soldered into the logic board, you won't be able to plug it directly to a SATA port to recover your data. On a side note: I can easily guess why Toshiba changed that interface. They just wanted to make their external HDDs impossible to use as internal hard drives and to force people to buy internal drives which are often more expensive than their USB versions. It's all about making more money,as always.
Thanks for sharing... saved me from destroying mine. Guess I'll return it and do more research next time before I actually buy the drive. It's probably a great external drive, but I need one to go inside a SFF desktop turned portable server.
Yeah, same experience with WD.... Nevertheless, Seagate, AFAIK still makes them in the 'traditional' way (I bought one SG back in May 2020 and it was SATA, but not the WD I bought a month ago)
I found the disk drive is similar as PC L200. If you can get donor circuit board and transfer the BIOS, you pretty much can change this into usual SATA connector. Only applicable if you have a broken PC L200 drive with working board and you're savvy enough to transfer BIOS from one board to another
Tao, thank you for being the one to figure this out for us. BTW, did you try swapping the controllers on the HDDs? That would be awesome to see if that was possible.
At least on the bright side these drives barely ever saturates the entire bandwidth of usb 3.1 or later, so there shouldn't be much to gain from using one through SATA other than the obvious convenience of installing one as an internal drive of course.
Guys. quick question. I am plannig to buy this for my backup - However i notice some people said that if the connector is ruined, then u r screwed. My quetions as follow: 1. how often is the USB connection fail in practice? 2. its almost 2 yrs since the video, wondering if your drive still running ok? 3. Isnt it with less 1 moving part be meaning with less 1 failure point to the device? 4.. looking back at this, do you still recommend the Toshiba Canvio?
premium garbage, that is what it is, to use micro usb 3.0 instead of sata.... seagate does the same thing. it is indeed a shame. better by your own enclosure and your own drive or SSD if you can.
You can put a normal sata connection on, I just watched a guy do it with a wd drive, you just have to know obviously which connection is which and also if the drive has an encryption chip or apparently on a rare occasion the encryption is inside the main controller chip, I wouldn't try it unless either you are extremely skilled in such things or you really don't care if the drive survives. The way the guy I seen do it he disconnected the encryption just by pulling the chips pins out of the board and he ended up with the sata fixed diagonally across the board but he was only interested in data recovery. I'm sure it could be done a lot better if you had the time and the necessary diagrams and equipment. I'm trying to find it because I did the same thing abd I even asked the shop owner if there was a sata connection inside and he said yeah yeah of course, last dollar he sees from me!
Might be bad luck, but I have 2 Toshiba drives and with both I experienced problems after just a couple of years in use while my other 4 or 5 external drives from other brands performed way longer. Maybe fusing the USB-plug with the drive was not such a bright idea. I just saw this guy here at "Mery Mind Meri Technology" on RUclips repairing such a plug. But sothering on a new plug seems exessive.
I almost opened mine. I was looking around to see if there's an adapter for this to convert it to sata. So far no luck. Mostly stuff to make hard drives external and not the reverse.
Which HDD would you suggest me to buy? I need an external reliable 2tb hdd for storing pictures and videos. I'm thinking on a HGST Touro mobile, a Toshiba Canvio and a WD my Elements. What do you think about them? What about their reliability in long term usage? Thanks for your answers. :)
@Diuco Hi, failure rate is impossible to tell on a single drive. I have used all 3 brands in the past as you mentioned. But my go to hard drives will be WD(all my internal HDDs and server HDDs are WD). And also, WD bought HGST back in 2012.
@@TaoMStudio Thanks. And wich one would you choose (price doesn't matter) between a G-drive Mobile and the Toshiba Canvio Premium? The G-drive is really a HGST, so it should be very reliable, but I've also heard a lot of good things about the Toshiba (which is also pretty reliable)... Quality seems to be good in both, but the G-drive runs at 7200 rpm (5400 rpm for the Toshiba). Basically, which manufacturer makes the best reliable, external 2.5 inch HDD in your opinion between Toshiba and G-drive?
@ Diuco In my opinion, G-drives are glorified WD drive(7200rpm as you mentioned), but works well. I personally don't use G-drives, but few of my friends use them, and they are happy with it. I personally would go with G-drive for better performance.
these are not supposed to be opened they are for backup, if you want or need an internal just buy an internal drivedug, plus wd has the same connector which is fine!
They design those to produce cheaper but they didn't calculate customer loss as i see. They are not usable for NAS or in Dock Stations that is why i checked detailed in internet and decide not to buy those garbages..
Hey guys. Tao thanks for the video. I have problem with the same Toshiba Canvio 500gb drive. I have lots of important data inside. When plugged to PC it shows up and it is blinking forever. Clicking on it but it is not accessible. I can hear it spins quiet. Watched a video before of a guy telling that in 90% of the cases it is faulty USB connector. Well since mine is the same like the one Tao show here, what is the solution to get the data back?? Any advice is appreciated please? Thanks
Bro small I need small information ! My pc Lenovo thinkcentr m920q small size . I want to put 4tb in that pc . Can I use thoshiba it will be set for my pc ?
standard 1tb and 2tb hard drives are 9.5 milimeters thin, or 9mm, or 7mm. 3TB and 4TB are 12.5mm or 15mm. care about the connector i have a toshiba laptop the SSD is standard 2.5" but not sata connector, it's a flexible specific toshiba cable. so 3 or 4 TB HDD will be too big you can't fit in the computer. choose any 2TB hdd.
Hi brother, I'm a video editor and i want to increase my laptop storage. So i'm thinking about buying - WD Elements 5TB 2.5" external disk WDBU6Y0050BBK-EA - Do you think i can reassemle and install it to my laptop as an internal hdd?
What a scam. Here we pay N$1100 for an external SSD. N$2900 for internal SSD. So yeah, they changed so they can make more money..?? so stupid changing the adapters.
So annoying! I was going to use it as an internal as the stupid thing keep sleeping, can't use it to play anything directly. Only useful as redundant archival storage!
its cheaper to buy a external drive and pull the drive out off it than to buy the drive itself because these external units are bigger sellers than the drive it self i have been doing this for over 10yrs.
If you want a custom drive, buy a SATA put it in an enclosure. What a stupid guy, you buy an external drive and you expect SATA ports, and then you clearly have no idea of ports, it's simple, data comes as data, the you translate it into a format. Spinning rust is bad enough without that unfortunate connector. Thanks for the video as I've one (not mine) to assist with troubleshooting.

Same with the 2.5" WD Elements I got. Cheaper for them to skip making an adapter if there's enough volume in the portable drives.
Yeah, same experience with WD....
Nevertheless, Seagate, AFAIK still makes them in the 'traditional' way (I bought one SG back in May 2020 and it was SATA, but not the WD I bought a month ago)

They changed the port because if the connector get broken, people will buy another one,,which is their profit but the buyers data loss😅
Do you know what kind of adapter I can use to connect to a sata bridge?
Tao, thank you for being the one to figure this out for us. BTW, did you try swapping the controllers on the HDDs? That would be awesome to see if that was possible.
Emm... will try it
Just realised that the connectors have different locations on the drive.
Okay, now we know. I won't try this myself then. Thank you for being a leader and trying this sir. (:
Can the board be replaced or repaired if is not responding please?
thanks for this i was just about to buy a 4TB Toshiba Canvio Advance to do the same
@P Grip 👍
Buy this it has sata connection “seagate 4tb expansion 3.0 usb portable external hard drive - stea4000400”
Very informative. Thanks. Too late to fit into laptop!!
At least on the bright side these drives barely ever saturates the entire bandwidth of usb 3.1 or later, so there shouldn't be much to gain from using one through SATA other than the obvious convenience of installing one as an internal drive of course.

I'm in the same situation at the moment. My connector is faulty and now I'm stuck trying to get a replacement board. My hard drive is unusable now.
Oof... I have it and I use it all the time connecting and disconnecting... I should maybe leave it connected and glue it..
The quick answer is that having a SATA interface greatly increases the chance of recovering data at home, including purely software failures.
I too have learnt it hard way. Never gonna buying Toshiba again
hi, suddenly my 4TB has issue with the board. Can I buy 1TB and use the board for the 4TB? I need to recover the data.
Did you ever figure out an answer for this? I am in the same situation, except with a WD drive
This type of connector disables the posibility of an easy data recovery :(

Hey, what should I do if my hard drive dies and has no SATA bridge?
It's a total disaster, my Toshiba hard driver connector is broken, and i can't replace it without replacing the whole board, what else can i do?

I think you could just buy a micro usb to usb header and connect it that way but only in desktop computers.
thanks , i was thinking the same thing
I'm currently looking between this one or ADATA HV620, planning to use it on my laptop.
So, that's it, it's ADATA and no Toshiba for me.

You can get the USB connector fixed from a professional fixer, after that you can use it normally and get your data back.

That connect is normally soldered onto the board.

My Toshiba is dead no light when connected, thought of connecting to pc through sata fuck tohisba they changed the port, lost all my data now😞
Thank you very much.
You can use these drives for internal storage if your motherboard has an internal USB port which most do have now days.
i see this today... on the hdd of a friend. pièce of cheat the usb is out so go to the trash...

Most of my HDD are from WD( includes my server). Maybe WD black?
Is there a way to convert Toshiba connector to SATA?
you are using Fenix OS?
Nop. Is Mac OS.
I think I'm justified in disliking Toshiba things
What you are doing is called shucking (aka hard drive harvesting).

No right to repair. What about data recovery? Not everyone has the facilities for this kind of technical recovery.
Thanks alot
thank you now I won't buy it or any another model " size " of canvio .
Thanks sir. I cancelled mu order. 😆
I also fooled by Thoshiba.
WD is doing the same thing
Seriously??? Bummer, but they gotta cut costs somehow.
Not a SATA hard drive Oof
why u buy an external to use it as an internal isn't that weird !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Not really, its just right in front of you to buy and convert (if its able to be at least)
its cheaper to buy a external drive and pull the drive out off it than to buy the drive itself because these external units are bigger sellers than the drive it self i have been doing this for over 10yrs.

It seems Toshiba hates the idea of people buying these to harvest for a laptop !! WHY ?? 🫤
Hi! is it possible to change the conector if it fails? I have the same and the pc doesnt recognise it :(
@ Fer Silva Soler
It may be possible if you have exactly the same hard drive to swap, but it defeats the point.
