Good luck finding a good candidate. Micro soldering and testing skills despite all the tech aren't as common nowadays. Whoever is the lucky guy I believe could literally make as much money as he was physically able to do as I don't think there would ever be a time with your queue where he wouldn't have work waiting. Really good $ if you are skilled.
Yes, he makes it look so easy. Yes, he has very good tools to work with. But it's not primarily because of that, it's because of his experience and skills. A lot of people always think that someone does things well only because they have around them an armada of tools designed for that purpose, but rather it's because those tools have been added over time. Namely, the time spent to gain the necessary know-how and experience, so that one successively became more and more professional. I know these thoughts/statements from other fields as well. Musicians who claim that their music is only bad because others have better speakers. Students who think they are worse because the others have better calculators. PC gamers who think they play badly because they only have 60fps instead of 80fps.
good on them for having a go, you will never learn if you never try, although it sounds like they didn't mention that they had a go at fixing it which is SUPER IMPORTANT for the person who actually repairs it to know that a repair was attempted so they at least know to check for typical faults such as "young people's hair" haha

There's probably a sata to usb bridge chip on the board (reason for second firmware), so you could have soldered 4 wires to the 2 differential pairs going into that sata-usb bridge chip to connect to a sata cable and make a drive image for backup purposes as fast as the drive allows.
